Fox News poll: Obama 45, McCain 39, nine-point swing since convention

Hard to fault the sample on this one when the party split’s precisely the same as it was for their last poll. Needless to say, it’s the economy, stupid, although McCain appears to have done some damage to himself too based on this trend:

At 47/36, down from 54/27 after the convention, Palin’s net favorables are now the lowest of the four candidates. A separate poll coming from NBC tonight will supposedly show that only 40 percent think she’s qualified to be president versus 49 percent who think she isn’t, although a majority of Fox News respondents say they’re at least somewhat comfortable with her as VP. If you believe Gallup, contra the reports after the convention of massive swings toward McCain among white women, she hasn’t done much to earn him extra votes within that demographic.
Oh, here’s some more good news. Looks like race relations are headed for a downturn if The One loses:

The polls are almost uniformly bad today and in some cases brutal, but rather than bludgeon you with horrible news I’ll point you to one that’s merely provocative yet discouraging. Behold:

Yes, yes, I know, the left perennially (quadrennially?) whines that pollsters underestimate Democratic support because they’re stuck sampling landline voters, not the cell-phone-only generation that tends to skew left. Historically the complaint’s been overblown because pollsters compensate for the missing cell-phone sample by adding more weight to young voters. The problem with doing that this year, apparently, is that young cell-phoners lean more heavily towards Obama than young landliners do, which means the pollsters might not be weighting the latter enough. Follow the link to the Pew survey and focus on the second table. We’re talking about a 10-point spread, which doesn’t feel like much given how relatively few cell-phone-only voters there are but in a close election might be decisive. Assuming, that is, that The One can get them to turn out.
Exit question good news: Gallup is unchanged from yesterday, and NPR’s survey of 14 battleground states actually has McCain up by two, although that’s within the margin of error.

Gulp.
Fox is so liberal, it’s disgusting.
(you see, I’ve figured it out. The left claims right leaning bias in clearly liberal MSM so as to provide cover for the MSM when they say, hey, both the left and the right think we’re biased, we must be doing something right. Well, time for the counterattack. Just start spamming that Fox is a liberal network.)

Polls are manipulated to persuade this far out. The upswing from the R convention was probably MUCH greater than the pollsters reported, plus it added the appearance of authenticity to their numbers overall. Since pollsters have to show how correct they are historically, they are only accurate 2-3 weeks before the election. If we see these numbers past Oct 15, then I’ll worry. Until then, they’re meaningless.
JustTruth101 on September 24, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Drudge is reporting what? McCain wants to stop the campaign? Man, what happened to his camp?
Sure, Obama might agree–he’d probably chortle at the idea. “You mean I can stop spending money, McCain stops running ads, and my surrogates in the MSM do my work for me? Am I having a wet dream or what?”
Vanceone on September 24, 2008 at 3:05 PM
Its simple to see what is happening. The Democrats gorund game has started to kick into gear.
I warned the RNC for over a year they would get hammered and they laughed and ignored it. I swear I have never meet such a clueless bunch in my life.
They bet the farm on their “Email” lists and its getting them killed.
If they had listen to me months ago this election wouldnt be going bad. The RNC needs a through cleaning.
The GOP is still trying to win with dinosaur tactics and they are getting creamed.

In suspending his campaign, he’s only doing what multiple people on this site have encouraged him to do – show some leadership on the financial issue.
This isn’t a suspension of the campaign – it’s just as political as any campaign rally and depending on how it goes, more important.

McCain suspending his campaign to work on the bailout in D.C.-
IS A BRILLIANT POLITICAL MOVE.
Obama has no choice but to follow McCain’s lead- or to keep on campaigning to the accussation of “politics as usual”.
BRILLIANT MAVERICK MOVE!
FiveWays on September 24, 2008 at 3:06 PM
DUDE. He (and I mean surrogates) spends the whole summer calling Obama a chicken for not wanting the town hall debates, and now wants to postpone the first debate? Is it because he’s a senator and wants to “work” this bailout thing out?
Weight of Glory on September 24, 2008 at 3:07 PM
I could be way off the mark but I think McCain suspending is the correct way to go. It shows leadership, he has voiced concern about this issue since 2005 and now has an opportunity to show all of America his leadership qualities. Besides, he is still a senator and this is one of the biggest issues in our life time.

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.
This is McCain putting country first people this is the best thing he can do.

Settle down, Gomer Pyle. All I did was lay out the alternatives and those are the alternatives, like it or not. My hunch is that Maverick is maneuvering and in the process of setting a trap. And if history has taught us anything, it has taught us that Bambi will walk right into it.

McCain is right. Being Senators is actually much more important than any debate right now.

MCCAIN SUSPENDS CAMPAIGN TO FOCUS ON ECONOMY; WANTS DEBATE DELAY
Wed Sept 24 2008 14:58:02 ET
MCCAIN: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.
Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward.I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.
It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’ proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.
Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.
I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.
We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.
I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.
Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.
Developing…

Smart move by McCain to postpone the campaign, and morally the correct thing to do. Get your plan out there and lobby Congress to DO IT RIGHT, so it doesn’t happen again. The current version just hides it for a little longer and then we get hammered worse in a couple years.
However, he needs to get Palin out there more and practicing up with the media. Let Sarah get some more experience. People really like her when she talks.
Sapwolf on September 24, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Why should Obama suspend? Maybe he wants to win the election. McCain sees his numbers go down a point a day as I predicted. McCain has to pretend that he would rather “lose an election than to not study the financial crisis that I know nothing about”.
HA HA HA HA!!!
The good ship McCain is going down. The economy is hurting and McCain is looking at Palin saying “ooops, I guess that pander didnt work out too well after all” and “HEY MEDIA PEOPLE, DONT ASK HER ANY QUESTIONS!!! McCain is making the right move. He was falling behind due to the economy and financial uncertainty.
Now he FINALLY steps up to show leadership on the economy and do what’s right, and you criticize him.
The debate will happen, only it will be delayed til after they hammer out a bill that will succeed in passing.
His recent dip in the poles would get worse and even if he won the debate on foreign policy, that would be forgotten by the third debate on the economy.
McCain just may win it with the third dabate on the economy when he stresses how he put COUNTRY FIRST in the bailout.
