Breaking: McCain suspends campaign to deal with economy, calls for debate to be postponed; Update: Obama wants debate to go on; Update: Don’t come back, Reid tells McCain

Country first.

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.

He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?

Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?

Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?

Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:

“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…

Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.

Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.

Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.

Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.

Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:

Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…

“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”

People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.

Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.

Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.

Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.

“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”

A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

That could work too. Let McCain go back to the senate to work on this, while Obama spends the next couple of days doing debate prep and not working in the senate … followed by McCain showing up and cleaning Obama’s clock on the foreign policy topic.

thirteen28 on September 24, 2008 at 4:46 PM

It’d be interesting if McCain could drop a bombshell on some foreign policy initiative at the debate and then have:
Obama: I haven’t heard the latest on that..
McCain: Well maybe you would’ve if you had been doing your job.

Skywise on September 24, 2008 at 4:49 PM

Here is the text of a speech that Barack Obama was scheduled to deliver in Florida today at 2:30. This is important in light of his campaign saying he talked to the McCain camp this morning at 8:30 in regards to suspending the campaigns.

RushBaby on September 24, 2008 at 4:47 PM

So, basically his writers changed a few words in the speech, and he gave it as a response. Pretty poor.

Vashta.Nerada on September 24, 2008 at 4:49 PM

New thought:

Let us say that somehow Obama still gets his debate and McCain shows up, begrudgingly, on Friday and stones him like he should.

Not only does Obama look like a selfish reactionary pantywaste, he’s pretty much proven he has the sound judgement of a drunken driver.

I’m still milling this over.

Once I get over the reflexive “I wanted to see Obama eaten alive on FP,” I see this move is brilliant. The media is basically forced to report on it, McCain suporters in the Senate and House can get working on tying Raines and Johnson to OCeaser, and attention is focused squarely on how Obama was slow to the punch when details about all the pork in the bill get out. I imagine there’s a fat earmark for Richard Daley in there somewhere.

BKennedy on September 24, 2008 at 4:49 PM

We cannot be bi-partisan, but I want to debate. I already sent my teleprompter down there. I want to debate.

HornetSting on September 24, 2008 at 4:48 PM

He was declined on permission to use his teleprompters in the debate. Poor Barry.

carbon_footprint on September 24, 2008 at 4:49 PM

Well at least he admitted that McCain did ask him to go to WAshington in that phone call, but it took a reporter to specifically ask him for him to say it.

Rightwingsparkle on September 24, 2008 at 4:50 PM

I think McCain should just issue a statement that he is sending VP Palin to speak with the King of Idiotsville, Obama, in his place, as there are more pressing issues facing the nation.

JellyToast on September 24, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Because campaigns don’t run themselves and it is a full time job. He can’t very well make decisions on the campaign AND debate the details of a bill that could make or break our economy.

Mac is doing the right thing and he did not decide to do it for any other reason than to put the country first. That is his history and there is no reason to suggest any other reasons for his actions.

Very interesting. So McCain takes the “most important issue” position, and Obama takes “I can multitask”. We’ll see how it plays it. Didn’t go well for Bush with Katrina, obviously different sides of the press though.

Defending McCain here, while for sure being all over Obama with all fours if he rather than McCain had done this, makes everyone who does that totally unfit to ever serve on a jury, even more so than those who where on the OJ jury.

MB4 on September 24, 2008 at 4:37 PM

I feel the same way about those people defending Obama’s complete lack of qualifications for the presidency go. Thanks, MB4!

Patrick S on September 24, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Complete lack of qualifications? In other words he has none at all. Even I have some and even you probably have some. Obviously you have helped make my point. If there is any justice in our judicial system you will never be on a jury.

BTW, that was an very weak try at trying to change the subject as it is not Obama who did this. He has done other things true, but not this. For McCain’s sake don’t ever be his lawyer.

With a relatively small number of exceptions, like Allahpundit and some commenters, this web site is the mirror image of DKOS, just the other side of the same blind sheeple coin. Same show, just under a different tent. Fortunately most of America is not like this.

But if not the gov than someone else would have inflated a different market.

Who? What market? Massive trade barriers brought about by public/private collusion is essentially what gave us 1929. The stagflation and shortages of the Carter years were a direct result of price controls (which were Nixon’s), oppressive taxation and over-regulation. When government gets involved with the mechanics of the flow of capital, whether at the best of the politicians’ businessman friends or for more “altruistic” reasons, the market suffers.

Greed and Fear define capitalism.

Bullshit. But thanks for trying. Love how you capitalized greed and fear. Makes them more true, somehow, right?

What defines capitalism is the flow of goods and services being regulated by market forces, usually via freely variable prices. Every society that allows capitalism to work on its own grows. Every society that decides they need to monkey with it “for the public good” screws it up. Every damned time.

But that is human nature and tryong to stop human nature is stupid.

No, what is human nature is to take something you don’t comprehend and make a demon of it. Like you’re doing with capitalism.

Capitalism isn’t human nature. Capitalism is what happens whether you like it or not. It’s reality. While the Soviets were busy directing every single widget made, where they went, who got the most, etc. and in the process starving its people through sheer incompetence, there was always a black market bubbling underneath getting to those who had the ability to pay (usually the ruling class) what they wanted.

It’s your choice, chief. You either get a free market that, yes, fluctuates in response to outside influences, or you get plenty of “human nature” in socialism. And nothing proves the ugliness of human nature like socialism.

Capitalism is the best economic engine in the world but it is also true on the downside. capitalism is the best destruction of welath in the world.

Please define wealth outside of a capitalist framework. All those folks that have 401ks to lose have them because they live and work under a free-market capitalist system.

It is the nature of the beast.

No, it isn’t.

It is the governments JOB to control the upswings so the downswings are not has bad. The government failed at its job.

No, the government’s job is to write laws, execute them and arbitrate between parties under those laws. There is no provision in the Constitution to “control the upswings” of our economy. What’s more, the violent upswings you’re referring to are the result of government meddling in the first place. When bureaucrats stick their grubby fingers into the market “for the public good,” they nearly always screw it up. And the only reason they’re ever able to get away with it is because of the robustness of free-market capitalism.

That’s the point: capitalism adapts. It bends. It will bend to accommodate incompetent meddling, too, until it breaks, which is what we’re watching now.

Simple yet millions will pay one way or the other.

No, what is simple is the fact that people who believe what you do about capitalism are the reason why men like Senators Dodd and Frank have the power to do what they’ve done to our economy.

The fact he started out with the all the I’s and Mine’s and now wants the debate to go forward and not go to DC.

He’s going to sink on this.

tru2tx on September 24, 2008 at 4:52 PM

I don’t think so. The President is addressing the country tonight. It just might be that there is something out there that is more important than a debate right now.

Tell me this, if McCain goes on just like nothing is happening, and Obama does the same thing, blaming all the bad stuff on Republicans and they are out there yammering away when some really big ass bank falls. Then how does that make either one of them look?

It might just be that McCain is not thinking about the campaign and nothing but the campaign. He might really think this is a big deal that needs to be dealt with.

Obama’s sound bites:

1) I thought of the whole “let’s solve the financial crisis” thing first…I thought of it first…not McCain…me…me…meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee….

2) The problem came about because of greedy CEOs…and some other market-driven stuff I won’t discuss because my economic advisors caused the crisis in the first place, and are too busy shunting dough to Switzerland against future legal bills to advise me….

…OK…he didn’t say it exactly like that, but the Obama-tanked media have taught me well….

…and, on Hannity, Sen. Liebermann sliced, diced and rendered into Julienne fries young Mister O.

Of course, John McCain should return to Washington…he’s a very senior senator. Obama can keep campaigning…no one will miss him….

Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.

AP, why wouldn’t McCain just offer this as a rebuttal to Obama? McCain should propose that the 1st and 3rd debates be switched as the economy is clearly most important now. McCain can talk about how he tried to prevent this in the first place when Obama did nothing. Lots of good stuff here for McCain to talk about.

JustTruth101 on September 24, 2008 at 5:01 PM

What’s McCain going to do that the Senate Banking Committee can’t do? That what those committees are for, for hashing out the devil in those details. What McCain wants is to duck the first debate.

starfleet_dude on September 24, 2008 at 5:02 PM

It would be hilarious if Bush came on camera tonight and said, “I applaud McCain’s choice to come to Washington to help me, and I call upon Obama to follow as this is an urgent matter that needs to be done now.”

Enoxo on September 24, 2008 at 5:02 PM

Straus:

wimping out on a debate? This is foreign policy debate, McCain’s strong suit. He could win a debate like that with pretty boy here no problem. However, I have the feeling that there are things going on out there in the financial world that make time of the essence.

As if Obama either cared or could even understand the issue. Tell me again someone, just what has Obama done in the last couple of years to deal with the current crisis??Anything? I did not think so.

Terrye on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

What McCain wants is to duck the first debate.

starfleet_dude on September 24, 2008 at 5:02 PM

I don’t think so.

carbon_footprint on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

I swear after watching the O show just now if anyone with a lick of common sense could vote for that man they need to see a doctor and get some serious med.s.

tee866 on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Orson Scott Card wrote not long ago, predicting a civil war because of the left living on their island of no dissent. The way the press is acting with Obama, is lending this prediction alot of weight.

What McCain wants is to duck the first debate.

starfleet_dude on September 24, 2008 at 5:02 PM

Why would McCain want to duck his strongest debate? Yeah, try again.

Enoxo on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

O.K., I have to muster up what little optimism I have left about this whole bailout mess and hope that McCain at least looks presidential on it.

anniekc on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Here’s Obama’s failing – yes, he’s right, a President must be able to multi-task and handle many things at once. But in a crisis, should one of those tasks be campaigining?

Or course not!

dugan on September 24, 2008 at 4:59 PM

No I believe, and historical precedent confirms this, that it should be looking dumbfounded with a children’s book while the VP and SecDEF do all the work.

LevStrauss on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Obama wants to play politics instead of fixing the problems that he and Democrats caused.

Chakra Hammer on September 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

What’s McCain going to do that the Senate Banking Committee can’t do?

starfleet_dude, considering the specific nature of the crisis, do you realize how idiotic your question is?

Godzilla on September 24, 2008 at 5:04 PM

I just heard Obama respond to press questions and he said (I paraphrase) that one of us is going to be responsible for this mess in about 40 days.

Get a clue, Barry. The new President is not sworn in until January 20th, 2009. Maybe Bill Ayers can help you count how many days that makes. Until then, George Bush is our President.

We need Buffent and Clinton to come out and condem Obama for us

Starfleet_Dude: What he’s going to do is his job. Something that Barack Obama and your Grandma haven’t been doing at all.

You, my friend, are nothing more than a Klingon.

starfleet:

I don’t think so. He was the one who wanted to do the townhall debates with Obama and Obama wussed out.

Terrye on September 24, 2008 at 5:04 PM

…this web site is the mirror image of DKOS, just the other side of the same blind sheeple coin. Same show, just under a different tent.

…no it isn’t…I take severe exception to this….

…we’re taller….

Fortunately most of America is not like this.

MB4

…of course it is…eight years of George Bush…a bit too trusting when going into the snake pit…which explains America’s flirtation with the Clintons…but a strong moral compass…just like here…like America? Sure it is….

Puritan1648 on September 24, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Watched the One on Niel Cavuto a few minutes ago…the One wants to do the debate saying that he can multi-task. I want McCain on the ground in Washington to be on the front line totally focused on dealing with this problem. If we are dealing with 700 billion dollars, then we need people on the front lines, not in Mississippi.

mindhacker on September 24, 2008 at 5:05 PM

FYI, McCain’s little stunt is the campaign equivalent of faking an injury in the 4th quarter. It’s not fooling anyone.

starfleet_dude on September 24, 2008 at 4:56 PM

jackass…is it a stunt for a senator to put his ‘country first’ and actually help fix what is a major problem. Osama is looking like the weak mindless candidate that he is. His speech was all circles of babble. Theres never any substance to this guy.

malkinmania on September 24, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Obama says a President need to be able to do more than two things at once.. problem is… Obama you aren’t the President, you are a Senator, Do your Damn JOB.

Chakra Hammer on September 24, 2008 at 5:05 PM

“If you need me, call me.”

Nobody needs you, dude. There’s work to be done.

Hammertime on September 24, 2008 at 4:56 PM

It just occurred to me, maybe he was singing again. That’s a lyric from “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.

capitalist piglet on September 24, 2008 at 5:06 PM

The big question on the bailout:

Will Obama vote “Present” or “Not Present”.

Hammertime on September 24, 2008 at 4:52 PM

I think you just hit on the trap-door that McCain is setting up.
