Breaking: McCain suspends campaign to deal with economy, calls for debate to be postponed; Update: Obama wants debate to go on; Update: Don’t come back, Reid tells McCain

Country first.

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.

He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?

Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?

Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?

Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:

“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…

Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.

Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.

Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.

Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.

Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:

Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…

“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”

People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.

Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.

Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.

Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.

“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”

A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

I don’t see the end game for Mcain on this one. I think Obama just trapped him a little bit.
Mcain skips the debate and the press howls he was scarred and this was a ploy.
Mcain shows up and it looks like he gives in and Obama pushed him around
i don’t know, I think at this point Mcain has to go ahead and skip the debate no matter what, the meida will beat him up either way.

McCain just wants to give the appearance that he took the bull by the horns and called for the president to bla bla bla solve this crisis, as if the entire country wasn’t already doing so. What an opportunistic and shallow act.

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Is Obama still drawing his pay as a Senator? Does he not have a DUTY to represent his constituents?

So, now its a ploy that McCain goes back to Washington, to participate in the debate on this bill… which is a HUGE bill, thus doing his sworn duty?

Romeo13 on September 24, 2008 at 4:25 PM

Johnny Mac you crazy son of a bitch.

I don’t know if this is heroic, machiaevellian, neither, or both (My money’s opn both), but its a move only McCain could pull off.

If he manages to save the day with a compromise bill, hopefully he is smart enough to realize that he shouldn’t brag about it too much in campaign ads. It will only make him look calculating, and it will be such big news that he won’t need to broadcast it, since anyone who isn’t already aware of something this big will almost certainly not be the type who votes.

When McCain shows up to debate Friday night, first thing he should do is point out the Barry was trying to win an election at the expense of figuring out how to fix the market crisis, but that it was just as well, if all Barry was going to do was vote “Present” anyway. Better he stay out of the way and let the grown ups handle it.

Nuts! Obama the talker is going to take a valiant stand for talking! Now Reid is saying it would be better for McCain to butt out… Next he’ll be saying, “This economy is lost!”

This is nuclear war toe to toe with the Democrats. They’re insane if they think they can win it. There has to be a deal, and every step they take away from making one just makes them look worse. One of the high compliments you hear about persuasive people is that they can “sell ice to an Eskimo.” I guess the opposite of a persuasive person is one who CAN’T sell snow to someone in Africa in the summer.

And yes, July is in the winter south of the Equator, but it’s still Africa. July in Jo’burg is like April in New York City.

I agree. If I was Obama, I would say:

“Senator McCain, there is an historic election coming up in a few weeks. The financial world is in turmoil. The country is going to make a decision as to who will lead the country through the next difficult four years. WE MUST DEBATE AND LET THE VOTING PUBLIC KNOW WHERE WE STAND ON THESE VITAL ISSUES.”

Puritan1648 on September 24, 2008 at 4:28 PM

The democrats can’t help themselves; everything is political.

The democrat party continues to put the interests of the democrat party first, and the national interest second.

democrat party loyalists continue to attack, obstruct, obfuscate, deny, distort, and attempt to redirect the argument.

As I posted on another thread, congress, especially the democrats won’t be able to do a deal, and if there is an economic collapse, they will not accept any blame for what happens.

ZP on September 24, 2008 at 4:30 PM

McCain better follow through with this, and now turn around. He called for suspension and postponement of the debates. Do not go to the debates.

It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.

Here’s my guess of what’s going on:

1. McCain needs time to prepare for the debate, and he can’t do that and deal with the pressing issues at the same time. He assumes Obama would need the same and makes the offer so they can both help their country. Hence the agreement to pull ads if Obama does it as well.
2. The Savior of the Democratic Party thinks he’s omniscient and doesn’t need to prepare for no debate, he can debate and vote present at the same time.
3. McCain figures he can use Obama’s arrogance to his advantage, pulls ads and saves money for closer to the election since without preparation, McCain can crush Obama in the debates and the money would be better spent working off that momentum.

Darth Executor on September 24, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.

Ok for all you folks out there… in the Government world.

If this is FULL STEAM for the Debates, with this going on and the fact the President of the Seante is calling people back for this. Would it be prudent to STOP the debates and reschedule?

Also if the debate DOES go on, can the Senate charge Obama for not returning concrning this? AND Can McCain sue the Commission if they start their own liberal crap (yes we all know they are liberals)?

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Do you read anything but the Daily Kos? Do you really know nothing about this situation? or are you just a koolaid drinker that has a hard time thinking for yourself? I mean, really…
I’m sorry I had to feed the troll…he was screaming for attention and it was bothering me!

kareyk on September 24, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Jelly Toast,

One doesn’t need ads when the cable news is running on about you full tilt dear.

Rightwingsparkle on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

You’re all excited that McCain regurgitated what everybody in the entire country has been screaming for the past week.

Yet a Republican is the one in the white house and you say nothing about what he has done about it.

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 4:31 PM

We’ve already covered the fact that the proposal Bush made to better regulate entities such as Fannie Mae were blocked by Dems in committee.

Hollowpoint on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Obama wants to give a speech to fix the economy.

McCain wants work.

Enoxo on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

“I’d rather lose a campaign than lose a war.”

McCain may just get his wish. Too bad. Obama isn’t ready to be Prez – and never will be.

Uh, from an OBMAM spokeperson?… check…

Romeo13 on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak.

Most of em sucked anyways. :P

People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.

This is the debate everyone wants to see anyways. Let’s do it. Rock their world.

UH OH MAVERICK’S SHINY PAINT IS PEELING

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 4:32 PM

How does a “joint statement” in any way resemble a return to Washington?

You spackle is showing Drywall.

FiveWays on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

That will make McCain look like he is just pulling a stunt and will make the remaining voting fools who havent figured it out yet that McCain doesnt want to talk about the economy when even George Will says McCain is embarrassing himself when he talks about the economy.

Roger Waters on September 24, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Bwahahahahaha. If only you could get your GED, you’d probably understand how stupid your comments are, no matter what the subject. Life must be easy for you, being unencumbered as you are by any semblance of intellect.

AubieJon on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Media’s already in the the tank for Obama claiming it was all Obama’s idea.
Indianapolis Star

Skywise

…already? Howse about “still”?

It’s only fitting that Mr. Obama contribute to the solution of the financial problem…enough of his contributors, staff and supporters “contributed” the problem in the first place….

Puritan1648 on September 24, 2008 at 4:35 PM

NEITHER candidate had plans to go back to Washington for the vote on the bailout.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13748.html

Ridiculous.

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM

With 40+ days left in a 19 month campaign, postponing the debate for a national crisis is the honorable and correct thing to do.

Especially since the debate topic favored McCain.

csdeven on September 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM

HornetSting on September 24, 2008 at 4:33 PM

I stand corrected, and you win 1 internets.

Abby Adams on September 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM

I think McCain is doing the political savvy thing. He knows the debate format is his forte but he’s willing to pass so that he can work in a bi-partisan fashion to create a plan for the economy.
He’ll “have to” come back to debate and be able to mention the inside talk that’s going on the Obama missed out on via his choice.
In a way, it’s his way of playing the expectations game for the debate. The press is playing down Obama’s expectations so anything short of disaster is a win for him. Now McCain will step away from serious discussion on passing an economic plan (rather than just paying it lip service) and will just have to perform well instead of superbly, like the press has trying to set the stage.

AeroSpear on September 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM

McCain didn’t become the nominee over great odds for nothing. Trust the Maverick!

Rightwingsparkle on September 24, 2008 at 4:37 PM

…Liebermann on Hannity…red meat….

Puritan1648 on September 24, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Well, part of Obama’s problem is that the moniker is quite plausible. With John McCain, not so much.

Furthermore, McCain is a real senator. Obama, not so much.

capitalist piglet on September 24, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Bravo sierra.

Duh. The McCain campaign is postponing a debate on the topic that’s his best strength (foreign policy) — not his weakness (the economy). If Obama suspended the foreign policy debate, that would be a different situation. Just like McCain suspending an economic debate to focus on a national security issue would.

amerpundit on September 24, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Bravo sierra.

You all know that if things were reversed you would be all over Obama. It would have been interesting if this post had just reversed things. If Allahpundit had been in an extra frisky mood. There is no doubt what the reaction would have been among those who had not seen or heard the story elsewhere.

McCain and Obama are both running for President of the United States and are each just 1 of 100 Senators and each just 1 of over 500 congressman. Either one would have to be narcissistic beyond all believe to think that the congress could not do for a couple of more days without their divine guidance.

Defending McCain here, while for sure being all over Obama with all fours if he rather than McCain had done this, makes everyone who does that totally unfit to ever serve on a jury, even more so than those who where on the OJ jury.
