John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.
He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?
Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?
Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?
Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:
“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”
However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…
Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.
Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.
Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.
Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.
Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:
Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…
“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”
People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.
Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.
Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.
Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.
“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”
A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

More: Team McCain has suspended all campaign ads and events.
Shep is still saying that the Commission on Presidential Debates is “working for the American people” in response to thousands of emails saying, “How dare the commission stand in the way of this.”

(…apologies in advance humbly offered to the good people of HotAir for feeding an obvious troll, but one occasionally has to flex the reply muscles…and this moron is an easy workout….)
…no…when you start out with a functioning moral compass and don’t think that key standards of personal and governmental conduct are “living documents”, it’s pretty easy.
If, on the other hand, you make sh*t up as you go along to justify your own self-gratification, it does get harder and harder…on the order of “oh, what a tangled web we weave…”.
…who’s been a target for treason since his inauguration…fantasy assasination stage plays, movies and the like…now being blamed for a financial collapse, every culpable player in which are either tied to Mr. Obama or are doctrinaire millionaire socialists (tied to Fannie Mae, a socialist “private” corporation if ever there was one)…who wouldn’t defend him, one simple human terms….
…now…I’ve never belched…well, not politically, anyway…I usually fart politically, and then only at Leftists….
Mr. McCain hasn’t got a good record…but, his pick of Gov. Palin was brilliant, both politically and ideologically. He chose not from among his colleagues — like Obama — but from among the people, who began the Cursus honorum like a reg’lar gal. Unlike Mr. Obama — whose career has been one of resume padding — she’s actually been there and done stuff.
…so, I would advise you that a man apparently supporting an empty suit should be careful about whom he calls an empty skirt….
…another eight years of Republicans trying to work with a corrupt, economy ruining, duplicitious, double-dealing coterie of byzantine eunuchs…it’ll take that…it’d be better if we got someone in who recognized that bipartisanship with a party made up of and supported by evident traitors is a doomed enterprise, but you take what you can get….
…damn, but you’ve chosen an apt screen name…tartily spelled, but apt….
Tell me, though…is this screed of yours original, or did you read it off a teleprompter….

Another thought . . . McCain’s message about his FNMA/FRMC warnings in 2005 have not been getting through very well to ordinary Americans.
Now the attention will shift from the presidential campaigns to Congress, where people other than McCain can make his case, as well as pointing the finger of blame at the Dems, where it belongs.
Maybe the message will get through better? Wishful thinking?
Could be very interesting!

A understand the problem. you seem like you do not. anyone that truely understands the problem would be in panic mode right now. McCain is in panic mode, obama is not. Bush, Paulson, Bernake are in panic mode. Dodd, Frank are not.
I have seen this problem coming for the last year. I have warned against it and tried to educate people like yourself of the problem. For that I have been called chickenlittle. this problem is very real and very dangerous. We have in this problem the single thing that could destroy this country.
It is exactly what OBL wanted to happen when he flew those planes into the world trade center. Do you not get this? The enemy knew our weakness. They attacked our weakness. Our weakness is now causing our economy to die. Do you understand now?
Yes i know who caused it, I know what caused it but that is not the point. The point is if we do not do what is needed our economy will die. You do not bi*ch about someone smoking and being overweight when he is in th OR having a bypass surgery. you fix the damn problem first.

It’s another attempt to shakeup the campaign. I can’t fault him for this…he’s behind in the polls and really has nothing to lose.
The political reality is that Obama should be running away with the race this year.

So Obama has just proved himself not very serious about the economic crisis by saying he still wants to work the debate in. I think Obama is afraid of forgetting his debate points if he has to think about the economy.

Those of you who don’t think McCain’s suspending his campaign is a good idea are naive at best. Consider this.
McCain has been dropping in the polls. Every political statement he makes is immediately criticized by Obama’s surrogates working for the media. The state of the economy is precarious. McCain is not in the spotlight and isn’t getting positive media coverage.
What does he do? He goes back to instincts. It’s maverick time.
Who is going to be getting free press coverage from the floor of the senatewhile spouting populist nonsense that the 40 percenters and undecideds like to hear?
Exactly. John McCain.

I don’t think a lot of people get how serious this problem is. I am beginning to think they believe it is all part of some campaign trick or something. If this problem is not solved, I am not sure that Obama will be happy he won in a year. He might be wishing McCain had gotten the job instead.

I understand that quick action is needed, and I understand why. But the crap that is going on now — with various legislators trying to insert additional billions to have the government purchase absolute crap like student loans, car loans, credit card debt, etc. is outrageous. They don’t care about rescuing our financial system, they’re just trying to cram as many gov’t give-aways as they can into the bill so that they can buy themselves re-election — they don’t give a damn if they bankrupt us in the process. McCain is right: every Congressperson and Senator needs to get their butts up to the Hill right now and make sure this thing is done and is done right.

clemycali on September 24, 2008 at 4:12 PM
What part of this do you all not understand?
MCCAIN: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Duh. The McCain campaign is postponing a debate on the topic that’s his best strength (foreign policy) — not his weakness (the economy). giveaways or part of the problem? What we have is a massive default on loans. all loans as those that can no longer afford them go belly up. yes the people lose their homes, their cars, their credit rating but the entire economic system also goes bellyup. If allowed to run its course there will be no credit, no credit cards, no paychecks (companies use short term debt to meet payroll) Can you live without pay for a month? two? How many americans will go hungery, not be able to get food? or gas to get to work when credit cards cease to funtion at retail stores. how will retail stores be able to buy new products without credit from suppliers how will the suppliers be able to build, grow, ship new supplies if the workers can’t be paid? And with unemployment benefits, section 8, food stamps how much will it cost the taxpayer if it does happen? More than $700 billion I would think. a lot more to buy for million off work, millions more for food, shelter, education loans. $700billion would be small compared to the money the gov is on the hook for some say $30 Trillion if the bailout does not go thru.
this is what we are looking at. A total stoppage of every line of credit in the country. Massive bank runs, hyperinflation, no credit, massive unemployment. Top it all off with a massive loss in assets vaules as homes fall by 20-30% stocks lose 30-50% of their wealth over night. and another 30-50% due to inflation in the midterm.
Do you get it now?

Why I’m not surprised by Reid’s comments? Its not going acording to their plans so lets say its not necessary for the candidates to show leadership.
Jack Cafferty was although saying that the debate on national security is more important. Duh.

This is true McCain’s message can’t get to the people because there is a firewall put up by the Media.
So McCain is taking it to the people. Making news they have to carry. They can spin all they want but it is McCain who is in touch with what is going on and Obama who is acting like a old boy network politician trying to get a pass for not VOTING like whether he votes is what is important not what the legislation says we have to live with for the next million years! The 700,000,000 our children will be paying way intot the future.
Which canidate is so rich 700,000,000 doesn’t seem like very much money to him.
McCain started the debate on the economy early.

Of course Democrats are up to something on this bailout. They’ve tacked on BILLIONS in earmarks for unnecessary projects, once again. They do NOT want the American people to see all the earmarks–which is why they’re not putting in regulation, oversight, and transparency.
The bailout does not need to be a trillion dollars, which is what it is set at now. As Palin says, we need a bailout package, but NOT this one.

The difference:
McCain has a history of brave, bold moves.
