John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.
He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?
Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?
Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?
Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:
“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”
However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…
Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.
Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.
Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.
Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.
Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:
Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…
“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”
People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.
Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.
Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.
Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.
“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”
A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

How about 6 MILLION TAXPAYERS in Arizona???? It’s his JOB to protect them from this monstrous grab of their tax dollars.
Also, Harry Reid is clearly using this thing to try to box him in. He doesn’t have the balls to confront McCain on the floor of the Senate.

McCain’s countermove to Obama wanting to keep the debate is to say: “I will not leave Washington during this crisis, but since my opponent wants to continue with the debate, I will send Governor Palin in my place.”
Now what’s Barry going to say?
1) “No, I won’t debate Palin” (looks weak)
2) “In that case, I’ll send Biden” (wait, isn’t Biden supposed to be at his desk too?)
3) “OK, fine.” (watch for the fireworks as EVERYTHING gets put on the line. Whoever wins that debate wins the election. If Obama beats Palin then she can be painted as an inexperienced light-weight, but if Palin wins Obama is toast.)
Barry is intrinsically cautious and thus will choose Option #1, accepting a temporary downturn at the polls rather risking the entire game.
PackerBronco on September 24, 2008 at 3:43 PM

I don’t see how turning his focus to solve a difficult problem can hurt him, which I suppose is why the lefties are squealing.

Nonsense–Barack uH. Obama is displaying leadership here.
Remember, running his campaign is his main claim to executive experience.
“I’m not going to let John McCain and the disciples of division distract me from continuing to accrue leadership experience.”
DRPrice on September 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Here’s the “almost” part: The only way I see Barack getting out of this is to point to McCain’s action and call it a tacit “confession of guilt.” “My opponent suspended his campaign and gone back to Washington. Why? Because he’s partly guilty for this mess and he knows it!”
It’s a risky move. But so was picking Palin. And it seems to have worked.
Ace ODale on September 24, 2008 at 3:22 PM
—–
Obama can’t do that – too many ties to the crisis – look at all the dollars he got from Fannie and Freddie, and how much he saved on his own mortgage, and who was on his VeepQuest team …..
Obama cannot turn this on McCain that way.
He could try a “Republican-caused crisis” approach, but that won’t really hurt McCain, he’s *known* for pissing in Republican corn flakes. Besides, which of ‘em offered a bill in 2005 (or was it 2006?) that would have *prevented* this mess?
McCain has very, very little downside, unless the Main Sewer Media manage to suppress the truth – and Hot Air et al make that less likely.

This move is clearly partly political. But considering John McCain’s character, the political advantage was the last thought. His duty to country was first.
I’d bet his advisers had to point out how this would play in relationship to the election.

Nice spin Hot Air. It seems that John McCain is putting the country first when his campaign is coming in at last.
Of course this is a brilliant move by the McCain campaign becuase it puts him out ahead as a “leader” (say it in a austin powers accent) on the economy.
Suspending a debate that he could surely conquer only makes his role as “out front” on this issue even more palpable.

HornetSting on September 24, 2008 at 3:52 PM
There is a great deal of talk in Washington and on Wall Street that at least one and possibly two or three more major financial institutions will fail if this bailout bill is not passed by Friday. One of those is Washington Mutual, which has about 20,000 employees and billions in insured deposits. Another one is GMAC which has 15,000 employees. Congress cannot screw around too long with this and there may be a series of votes on Friday. If Obama is in Mississippi waiting for a debate while McCain is in Washington voting on this, I think it could change everything in this election.
What’s likely to happen now is that Obama will lean on Reid and Pelosi to rush something through tomorrow so Obama can heroically come and vote for it and focre McCain to vote for it, and then go through with the debate.

What’s Obama going to do, debate himself?
Actually, when you think about it, he probably could. He’s been on every side of every issue already. He could run back and forth between the two podiums, giving his different positions depending on what question is asked:
“I support gun bans and I believe the gun ban in D.C. is constitutional.”
“I’m so glad the Supreme Court upheld the Second Amendment and struck down D.C.’s unconstitutional gun ban. I love guns and so does Joe Biden, who has a Beretta.”
“I was always against the surge; it will never work and will only cause more sectarian violence in Iraq.”
“As I’ve always said, the surge was destined to be a success because our military is the greatest in the world.”
“Iran is no threat to the U.S. It’s a tiny little country that hardly spends anything on its military. Ahmadinejad is a great guy, and Michelle and I are going to invite him over for dinner soon and sing Kumbaya to him.”
“Iran is a grave threat to the U.S., and I think we should nuke them the first time they look at us funny.”
Etc.

Capitalism is defined by booms and busts. Yes this particular one was caused by the gov inflating a market. But if not the gov than someone else would have inflated a different market. Greed and Fear define capitalism. But that is human nature and tryong to stop human nature is stupid. Capitalism is the best economic engine in the world but it is also true on the downside. capitalism is the best destruction of welath in the world.
It is the nature of the beast. Socialism garuntees avg results and massive poverty. Capitalism on the otherhand offers a trending up economy but sharp drops to the downside. People don’t like the drops and move towards socialism when the drops occur. It is the governments JOB to control the upswings so the downswings are not has bad. The government failed at its job. Simple yet millions will pay one way or the other.

How can doing one’s job instead of campaigning be “partly political?” Sure, there had to be some thought involved about whether or not to continue campaigning but that would have centered on whether or not it leaves Obama an advantage in the polling.
I’d suggest that any elected official in Congress who is still out there campaigning needs to account for themselves while the institution to which they have been elected is contemplating spending $700B in taxpayers’ money on a bailout of Wall Street and a few selected organizations. If this isn’t a good reason to be in DC representing your constituency, what is?
Any Congressman or Senator who is NOT in DC right now should be asked point blank “what is so important that you are ignoring your responsibilities and oath of office?”

This move has quite a few advantages for McCain.
1. it knocks BO off his pre-foriegn policy cram.
2. Country first
3. McCain can show that BO was/is beholden to this crisis by the amount of dollars taken by BO v McCain. Plus dem created crisis, giving McCain free advertising.
4. biden has to vote too
5. The debate gets rescheduled, knocking BO off balance, re pre-debate f-policy cram.
6. Bush to give a speech on the importance, BO on the trail with Biden, everyone else is in their seats.
More advantages for McCain than BO.

McCain also needs to make sure there is no distorting of his stance. Look at how these loons, along with the MSMLSD’s are lying about what he did to try to stop all this mess. I would not trust Dodd, Reid, or Frank et al to do this! Bush has said if this is not addressed it could be catastrophic. I would think using words like that would call all Senators to make sure they had a say in how this thing is worked out. Besides, the Democrats are placing more earmarks on this one and McCain needs to call them out on this. I firmly believe this is going to hit Obama hard. He looks small against this decision.
Yesterday I watched some video of THE ONE admonishing an elderly woman asking him about protecting us against terrorism and about illegals. She wanted specific answers. He yelled at her and his answer was he for sure would take moves to protect “his children”. Not he would protect this country he loves, or ALL American children, but HIS children. He is beyond Bill Clintonesque “it is all about me”! BEYOND! Same deal with this decision. He is whining about “I WAS FIRST! IT WAS ALL MINE, MINE, MINE!” Time out and playpen time for THE MANCHILD!
Plus, this makes McCain a man of his word in placing country first and knowing how to make bi-partisan moves. Obama cannot make a claim that he has made one move remotely resembling this. Considering the current makeup of Congress and the future makeup of Congress, this move was good because it shows McCain will tackle anything and do whatever it takes to get the job done and he will not take “No” as an answer from either party. Despite how we all would like to defeat the Dems, they are still going to have a majority and reality says this move will remind folks they need someone like McCain working with these MARXIST.

Maybe so, but it’s not like they have any sort of law enforcement authority here. If McCain doesn’t show up, then he doesn’t show up. The candidate standing there can’t debate himself. Well, Obama probably could.

Not that I’m aware of… other than the social consequences, that is. A lot of it is about show, how the public views you in close context with your opponent, etc.

I never heard or read anyone – right or left – arguing that they should
cancelpostpone the debate because of the economic crisis. Maybe that case was made, but I never saw it. And even though it’s a foreign policy debate, I didn’t hear people contending that it should ba cancelled.I’m not sure how this move will be interpreted. It’s not like this is an appearance on “Rachel Ray.”
Oh, and one more thing – why not cancel all campaign events immediately? If this really is so important, go back to DC now.

I say to McCain: ask to cancel this debate altogether, and replace it with a series of townhall style debates.
