Breaking: McCain suspends campaign to deal with economy, calls for debate to be postponed; Update: Obama wants debate to go on; Update: Don’t come back, Reid tells McCain

Country first.

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.

He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?

Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?

Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?

Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:

“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…

Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.

Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.

Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.

Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.

Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:

Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…

“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”

People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.

Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.

Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.

Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.

“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”

A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

For those of you who think this is a great move, here’s my question:

When does he return?

When will McCain be able to say, “crisis averted, now I’m restarting my campaign.” What will the conditions be? If he returns and the market drops again, does he suspend again? How long is McCain out?

And if Obama shrugs his shoulders and say, “fine, but I can campaign and attend to my duties at the same time,” where does that leave McCain? You say he’s showing leadership now, who how will that look when he finally joins Obama on the stump after several days or week or longer? Won’t Obama look more like a leader then?

The bottom line is that this should not be done for political gain – and I don’t think McCain is doing it for that reason. I think he sees a major problem that has to get averted in the next few days or the financial markets will collapse. He figures he has to act now and he has to be in Washington now.

Probably he’s recognizing support for the bailout plan is starting to crumble and figures his return to Washington can move it forward again.

Look for some sobering news from the President tonight. I think Bush lays it all on the line for the country.

Back to politics: After Bush’s speech, if the public realizes how bad things are, then McCain’s decision will be seen as a patriotic move in that light and Obama will be seen to be out of touch.

Hang on tight.

Gee, imagine that, a DEBATE with the two candidates about the bailout and economy. What a concept.

Why do I find it hard to believe that McCain would not be asking for this if he were still “up” in the polls?

It is going to take Obama 45 minutes to decide what he is going to say! In the next half hour he will release a statement. WHAT A EGO MANIAC!

This will hurt and has hurt Obama. McCain will never run an ad on this situation though. McCain made a bold move for Americans and looks every bit Presidential and Obama is looking like THE MANCHILD!

jim m on September 24, 2008 at 3:23 PM

Uum, yeah, and if you don’t believe that, you should go back to your sandbox.

This is the biggest piece of legislation to be tackled since Medicare in 1965, in terms of its impact on the economy and on you and me. I think they need more than two days and 6 members of Congress and a single Cabinet secretary to work it out. This is 700 BILLION DOLLARS OF OUR MONEY. You’re damn right I want my Congressmen and Senators involved in decidind whether this much money needs to be thrown at this problem and how it will be done! Good grief!

And Barack Obama had better get his ass back to Washington to represent the 11 MILLION TAXPAYERS WHO LIVE IN ILLINOIS. It’s unthinkable to me that any of these 3 Senators in this race could just abdicate their job in this crisis.

I saw on the Fox headlines that Obama is trying to turn Indiana blue. I live in Indiana and I have a hard time believing this can happen, but then I see the quote from Congressman Pence saying comparing the bailout to a used car salesman or some such silliness. You know, I realize that people don’t want to hear it, but the Congress needs to move on this and get it off the TV and the front pages…if they don’t guys like Pence might find themselves a minority in a state they used to a be a majority in. If you catch my drift. I think that is what McCain wants to do, get a resolution to all this and move on.

Already happening.

It’s being spun as Obama’s idea with McCain responding to Obama’s call to suspend the campaign. Who knows how valid this is.

McCain needs to hit this hard, fast and heavy and move himself into leading this. If this goes south, McCain is done.

Screw the speeches. McCain- get your ass on the plane to Washington and put Palin on the steps making public speeches to rally external support.

“I can’t wait to introduce her to Washington.” Okay… now is the time. Palin can handle the economy and the press is clamoring for her attention. Get to work.

At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama’s call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement. The two campaigns are currently working together on the details.

OK, so it seems clear what happened here. Team Obama initiated this this morning. McCain’s trying to one-up him.

Look for Barry to……..”refine”….his initial response.

OBAMA: THE DEBATE IS ON… TELLS ABCNEWS… DEVELOPING…

- Drudge Report

ColHogan on September 24, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Gosh, it must get harder and harder for your wingnuts. First you have to defend the shrub. Then you all complain and belch about how crappy McCain is and how you will follow your water toating buddy Druggie Limbaugh, and how you would never support McCain … then you have to sit and watch the old guy put up an empty skirt to run with him, now you have to talk your way through another failure by your party and it’s president.

Don’t you just wish you could get Obama elected so you can start over in 4 years?

Monkei on September 24, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Have to feed his speech into the teleprompter.

HornetSting on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Isn’t it obvious?

McCain is delaying the debate to shorten the playing field and minimize his money disadvantage.

Barry looks mean and politically motivated if he refuses to go to Congress and debate the real issue of the day, the bailout.

The trickbox: if Barry agrees to the delay, he agrees to shortening the playing field, and is forced to defend the 167 million dollars in bonuses paid to the likes of Franklin Raines, Jim Johnson, and Jamie Gorelick on the floor of the Senate. McCain doesn’t have to raise the issue, but sure as shooting a Jim DeMint or Richard Shelby will drag Barry into the fight.

Angry Dumbo on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

What is it that requires him to be in D.C. for four days?

jim m on September 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM

It’s his ability to get consensus, face to face. If it were just phoning it in, no representative would need to roll up to DC.

Spirit of 1776 on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Hannity said a few minutes ago that Obama’s campaign had now agreed to delay the debate, but I don’t know where he got it – not posted elsewhere yet…

Uhh… now he says that Stephanopolous at ABC was just told by an Obama senior campaign member that the debate is on.

Go figure…

bofh on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Barry’s response: “WAH! IT WAS MY IDEA FIRST!”

FiveWays on September 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Incorrect.

Barry’s response: “Uh…um….uh…..I have always said….”

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Advisor has told that George guy from ABC News that the debate is still on…..

There is alot of miscommunication in team O.

JVelez on September 24, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Do you people understand how serious this is yet? this isn’t a downturn this isn’t a couple people getting hurt, this is Argentina serious. We could have a massive finacial fallout not just in the US but around the world. This is what causes world wars, life savings gone in a blink of an eye. $01ks wiped out, iras wiped out, pension plans wiped out, savings accounts wiped out.

This is serious folks. this is the nasty, ugly side of capitalism. a side that makes millions of people flee captialism for the supposed safety of socialism. This is it folks.

Doesn’t McCain have a cell phone? What is it that requires him to be in D.C. for four days?

jim m on September 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM

That’s OK. Mac can work back in DC.

Teh One can debate himself. He has certainly taken enough positions on every issue. Shouldn’t be a problem.
