Breaking: McCain suspends campaign to deal with economy, calls for debate to be postponed; Update: Obama wants debate to go on; Update: Don’t come back, Reid tells McCain

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.
He’s trying to siphon off some of Obama’s strength with voters on the economy, obviously, but er … at the expense of a debate on foreign policy that would have played to his own strength? What does McCain gain by steering the campaign towards an issue for which the public blames his party?
Update: Is there any way The One can say, “No, let’s debate”?
Update: Slublog suggests this is Maverick’s way of dragging Obama and Biden back to D.C. while keeping Palin out on the trail. Eh. Given the media’s disposition towards her, how do you think they’ll cover her stumping for votes amid this dire national crisis?
Update: I guess McCain figures he’s at enough of a disadvantage on the economy that if he doesn’t do something bold to cut into Obama’s lead, he’ll disintegrate by election day. Meanwhile, Barry O says … the debate is still on:
“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”
However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…
Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.
Update: The Weekly World News blows the lid off the secret reason for McCain’s ploy.
Update: Team Maverick’s in the process of yanking its ads as we speak. I think this is actually an opportunity for Obama to show some stones. Call what McCain’s doing a stunt and reiterate the need to debate on grounds that both sides can spare a few hours for a moment of national import in which the public is extremely interested. It could backfire, or it could destroy the political benefit McCain’s getting out of this.
Update: Ole Miss says it’s been told by the debate commission that for the moment it’s full speed ahead.
Update: Ah, the search for a victim ends with Ole Miss claiming it’ll be “devastated” if McCain pulls out now:
Andrew Mullins, special assistant to university Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly $5.5 million getting ready for the debate…
“It’s huge. You cannot just say that you’re not going to do this thing,” Mullins said. “I don’t have any idea whether we do the debate” at a later date. (We) probably wouldn’t do it.”
People are e-mailing to say that McCain should send Palin in his place. Yeah, I’ve got a funny feeling that’s not in the offing, although it’d be clever if Obama proposed it.
Update: A source inside the Obama camp tells NBC The One will reject the idea of cancelling the debate and argue that presidents should be able to multitask. Er, what if McCain simply doesn’t show, then? Meanwhile, Obama mega-shill Joe Klein offers a clever way to call Maverick’s bluff: Simply move the debate to D.C. so that the two candidates can be in town to work on the bill and change the topic from foreign policy to the economy.
Update: As expected, he just said at his presser that he thinks it’s important for Americans to hear from the candidates right now given that one of them will have to deal with this mess in January, etc etc, so the debate is presumably still on as far as he’s concerned. Your move, Maverick.
Update: Reid told McCain on the phone his presence is neither wanted nor needed.
“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”
A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

F**ck Reid!
Let’s deal with the real world. Fact- McCain and Obama are the elected heads of their respective parties and both are US Senators.
This situation demands leadership and McCain is stepping up the the plate while Obama… as usual… avoids anything of consequence at all costs.
The lights and cameras are PRECISELY what this situation needs; the more the better. I for one am sick and tired of Democratic backroom deals and corruption. This is an American crisis and the American Public deserves the facts of this matter to be covered as openly and extensively as possible.
Reid, you worthless, spineless, blabbering piece of s**t- go back to mumbling about “no one knows what to do”, but speak for yourself from now on. That statement would have been the only accurate thing you’ve ever said, you reeking piece of trash, had you simply phrased it in the first person.

But people do want the debate. Maybe not you or I because we know what will happen when McCain pwns him in foreign policy but it’s all about those dreaded undecideds (that we can probably never understand) who get swayed by these things. McCain needs to be out there getting people to understand where he’s coming from. If he goes to Washington and fails then where does that leave him? His heart and will is in the right place but his mind isn’t? I think the greatest problem for conservatives period is to get the message of their platform out. Explaining the foundations of our principles. You educate the public enough about that and back it up with the numerous examples that history provides then the Left will remain a minority forever.
As for solutions…this is beyond the scope of McCain or Obama. They can say what they would do or suggest solutions left and right, but in all honesty this is bigger then them. They’re just one vote amongst the Senate and with how fractionated the parties seem to be at the moment I don’t see either being the standard in which their respective parties will rally.
Frankly, the longer this is delayed the better. The markets haven’t fallen to dust yet have they? Then there’s no reason to be in such a panic allowing the people who caused the problem in the first place to suddenly be those who “fix” the problem. I do not want to see the biggest expansion of government, an institution with the powers to protect us against fraud, defend us and not much else according to the Constitution, happen here and now when this nation so desperately needs the exact opposite. Everything Reagen championed will basically have reversed itself.

But then you are lefty, so you really can not imagine that there is anything more important than power. Responsibility? Doing a job you were elected? Yeah right. Like I said, you are demented. I think McCain would do well on a debate on foreign policy with Obama. After all, Hillary Clinton did better than Obama in debates, and yet look where he is at.
Terrye on September 24, 2008 at 5:56 PM
The debate being postponed til after fixing the liquidity crisis is very good for McCain because if they held it now, it would mean little interest given that the economy/finance issue would trump it completely.
Get it rescheduled to the day after Israel bombs the nuclear facilities of Iran. Ok, getting that kinda timing would be difficult, you catch the point.

McCain sees a political impasse on the bailout bill that needs leadership — specifically, his leadership. He sees earmark-type layers being tacked on by the Dems and he is making his stand against pork.
If McCain wanted to endorse the current version of the bill, he would have done that already. Reid and other Dems already ceded the issue to him by demanding he sign on or they won’t. They are the ones playing politics with this issue.
I
suspecthope McCain will try to craft a bill that Bunning, Shelby, DeMint, Pence, et al can support. He already asked Bush to call a joint session of Congress and I will be surprised if Bush doesn’t.McCain has changed the venue from the campaign trail to Congress. All eyes will be on what he does. If the Dems delay this process further with politics, it will be in full public view.

Sen. Reid would you like to re-think your answer. It makes no sense. Sen. McCain is an elected representative of the State of Arizona. You don’t multitask in a crisis situation because multitasking means everything takes longer to get done.
Let’s say that you have 3 tasks that each take 15 minutes to complete.
If you don’t multitask, you get the first one done in 15, the second done at 30 minutes and the third done at 45 minutes.
If you multitask (work each task for 5 mins then move to the next), after 15 minutes you’ve done 5 mins of work on each task and nothing is done. At 30 mins you’ve done 10 mins on each task and nothing is done. It is not until 35 minutes into working that you finish the first task, 40 mins to finish the second and at 45, you finish the third task (same as without multitasking). And, this doesn’t even take into account the time lost in switching between tasks.
My point being, when something is really important, you focus on it and get it done. The only reason someone should multitask in this situation is because there are two REALLY IMPORTANT things that need to get handled (say the economy is collapsing and Iran invaded Israel). I really doubt that campaigning rises to the level of “must be done immediately”.

What Bush and Paulson want is unacceptable and, in most senses, unconstitutional. Hence my desire to see all this delayed. Believe it or not this economy, without government taking over, is far more resilient then with it taking over. Hell this is how we got here in the first place.
So honestly I want to know why we should accept what is being laid out before us?

You’re funny. At best, it’ll happen in 3 years. At worst, nothing will happen.

Yes, I do. I think McCain wants a resolution to this crisis.
The really interesting thing is that so many lefties seem to think the idea of actually doing your job is just so….silly.
After all leadership is about giving speeches, trashing the other guy, getting the media to kiss your ass and in general making all kinds of promises so that people will vote for you and most importantly, evading responsibility….they never seem to think about the fact that if Obama does not show some leadership now, how can we expect him to show any in a couple of months?

McCain called Harry Reids bluff. yesterday HR said that it was vital for McCain to be in DC to support this bill. Today once McCain made his move, HR calls and says your not needed! What a boozo.
