Video: On clean coal, Biden takes bold stand against, um, Obama’s position; Update: McCain launches coalition to protect coal jobs

Via the Standard, here’s the relevant plank of Team Barry’s plan for green jobs:
Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology.
Obama’s Department of Energy will enter into public private partnerships to develop five “first-of-a-kind” commercial scale coal-fired plants with clean carbon capture and sequestration technology.
And now here’s the Greasy one, summarily outsourcing those jobs to China. Did I or did I not tell you that the man’s a genius?
That’s twice now in about 18 hours that Biden’s undermined his own campaign. Are they just not cc’ing him on the memos anymore? Has the surging tide of Palinmania caused even Obama HQ to forget that he’s part of this campaign? Or is this all part of some dastardly Axelrodian plan to have him gaffe his way off the ticket, clearing the way for Her Majesty to come aboard and bring that stubborn 42 percent with her?
Not the only new gaffe of the morning either, do note. Exit question: Maybe this is all part of Al Gore’s master environmental strategy of China not having to go green until the U.S. does?
Update: Jay Cost makes an obvious point I should have flagged: This is going to play oh so sweetly in western Pennsylvania.
Update: Compare Biden’s direct condemnation in the clip — “We’re not supporting clean coal” and “No coal plants here in America” — with this balletic bit of spin from his spokesman:
The Democrats are responding by essentially reiterating Obama’s stance on the issue, implying that this was merely a matter of Biden speaking out of school.
“Senator McCain knows that Senator Obama and Senator Biden support clean coal technology,” says Biden spokesman David Wade. “Senator Biden’s point is that China is building coal plants with outdated technology every day, and the United States needs to lead by developing clean coal technologies. The Obama-Biden comprehensive energy plan will invest $150 billion over 10 years in clean energy technologies, including incentives to accelerate private sector investment in commercial scale zero-carbon coal facilities. The Obama-Biden Department of Energy is committed to developing 5 ‘first-of-a-kind’ commercial scale coal-fired plants with carbon capture and sequestration here in the United States.”
Update: Fresh off the presses from Team McCain. Go for the throat, Maverick!
ARLINGTON, VA — Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV), former Virginia Governor and Senator George Allen, former Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) and RNC Chairman Mike Duncan will announce the McCain-Palin campaign’s Coalition to Protect Coal Jobs, a nationwide group including members of Congress, state government and other influential leaders. The coalition will help spread the message about the importance of clean coal technology and the advantages of tapping the country’s vast coal reserves. As part of John McCain’s “all of the above” energy plan, the Lexington Project, clean coal will be a strong component of the drive to energy independence. In addition to providing domestic energy, the coal industry is a key part of the economy in several states.
John McCain’s support for clean coal technology is in sharp contrast to that of his opponents. Joe Biden visited Virginia on Saturday, saying that he was a “hard-coal miner” and that it was “nice to be back in coal country” while Obama supporter, Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA) said “Senator Obama’s a friend of coal.” But just two days later in Ohio, Senator Biden said he wants “no coal plants here in America” and that he and Senator Obama are “not supporting clean coal.”

Biden does the “environmentalists” proud. Instead of building clean coal power plants, let’s just keep running the dirty ones we have at full capacity far into the future…
Real environmentalists would like to see cleaner, more efficient plants built so the old dirty ones can be phased out as they hit the end of their useful life span, instead of having to keep them on life support indefinitely because we don’t have any other options.
I still think radical “environmentalists” have done more harm to the environment over the last few decades than any other group on the planet.

If Obama wins, will Biden ever be seen from again?
And
How the hell are we losing to these people?

Biden does not have to be a Clinton plant to be trying to leave the ticket.
But I can hear the cackles all the way from Westchester county.

Joe Biden is the gaffe that keeps on gaffeing. There is no way he will be able to not say something stupid in his debate with Palin, unless he just sits there for an hour and doesn’t open his mouth.

Ed, Isn’t that assuming that they’ve EVER cc’ed him?

And the REALLY fun part of this…
IF Carbon is indeed a Greenhouse Gas, in a few years we’ll be building dirty plants on purpose to offset the Global cooling coming from the lack of sunspot activity.
Too bad it does not work that way… LOL

A new renewable energy source – harness the energy given off by the Democrats spinning Biden’s statements.
TooTall on September 23, 2008 at 12:19 PM
This is just one of many Obama vs Biden moments.
Biden didn’t like Obama’s McCain ad about technology.
Obama didn’t like Biden’s premature stand on AGI bailout.
This brings up an interesting dynamic. Biden – older “wiser” (yes, in quotes) more experienced. But, a HUGE ego. How he handle being second fiddle to Chicago Slim in the White House. Who will be BOSS? Chicago Slim thought he was going to have conflicts with Hillary checking his pulse ever morning….
By comparison, Sarah’s difference with John on ANWR is classy. “We agree to disagree, but I’ll keep working on him.”
kurtzz3 on September 23, 2008 at 12:19 PM
This spin will be graciously accepted by the msm.
Can you imageine if the ‘Cuda had done something like this?
It would be “further proof” that McCain is “off his rocker” and made an “irresponsible pick”.

The problem with this former primary opponent getting on the ticket is that Biden still thinks he’s running on his platform.

I may need some help with my Biden-to-English dictionary here:
“We’re not supporting clean coal” really means “the United States needs to lead by developing clean coal technologies”.
And just to be picky, isn’t “zero-carbon coal” an oxymoron? Maybe it makes sense. Biden supports the development of clean non-carbon coal technologies?

And let us not forget how THE ONE MANCHILD COMMUNITY ORGANIZER touted how wonderful China’s infrastructure is! Remember during the Olympics he was drooling over China! So Joe has not only slammed PA and is in contradiction to Obama over clean coal, but he just slammed THE ONE’S beloved China! LOL!
Okay, I asked the other day about the Clintons having Biden as a plant. Today answers that question! There is no way Hillary will come in and save the Titanic, NO WAY!
The one bell that keeps going off in my head is when Rush said some months back that it might be a good idea for a Democrat to win the election because of how things are going to go South regarding the economy, etc. He said if a Dem won, the American public would hang the mess on the Dem President and Congress. WE could then in 2012 and clean house. Since there is a chance McCain might win; she might be banking on McCain/Palin not getting things set straight, reformed and back on track. Without a Republican Congress how are they really going to be able to attack the serious problems in government? Or better put, how are they really going to reform Washington like most Conservatives and Americans desire?
Is anyone expecting him to drop the Sinclair bomb? He knows all about that and some said that is why Biden got picked. The Obama campaign cannot do much to him with that kind of knowledge unless Biden assumes room temp!

Mining in Scranton really began dying in the 60s, when I was growing up near Scranton (not in it — a much smaller coal region town). It still goes on, but the hard coal fields don’t have what they once did.
In western Pa., where the fields are soft coal fields, there’s still a good bit of mining.
So, yeah, it’s idiocy.
Sign on Biden’s forehead: Space for rent within. Cheap.

Yes, very good! That’s called combined cycle power generation…very efficient.
As well, you can simply take the Democrat bull sh*t and deposit in large reactor vessels to harness the resultant methane for an endless stream of clean burning energy. I think we’re on to something…

Try this scenario:
How was Barry to know that Joe wasn’t a team player? He is shocked and disappointed to learn this about the Senator. Just as no one could have imagined the surge working, no one could have imagined this…
Or Hillary could be asking her friend Biden to sabotage Barry’s campaign, and Joe might be sick of Barry anyway.
I’m mostly having fun with this, but there is something bizarre about Joe going suddenly so far off the plantation.

For all the joking about Eagleton, I am starting to get a bit concerned that it could happen. Biden is that disasterous to Obama’s campaign. Hopefully Clinton is secretly telling Obama she’ll take the VP slot and then, once Biden is gone, says no thanks. That would pretty much be game-set-match.

In addition to being against universal citizen Obama, Ohio Biden is against…. Kentucky Biden.
Speaking to conservative coal miners, Kentuck Biden touted “clean gasefication”. Speaking to the liberal base (with nary a coal miner in sight), we get “no plants”.

The VP slot would not help Hillary at all. The economy will tank and Obama will destroy our armed services, foreign policy and allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. I can’t imagine the voters in 2012 electing Hillary, if the 2008 Obama/Hillary presidency trashed the nation. Right now, it’s setting up perfectly for Hillary to run in 2012 and win. If McCain/Palin win, the economy is going to still be a disaster for a while. Even if it starts to improve by 2012, the public is going to remember the pain and want a democrat back in the White House. I absolutely believe Hillary wants Obama to lose this election. It seems obvious that Bill is being very subtle in his campaigning for Obama.

If Obama replaced Biden with Hillary It shows that it’s a gimmick, and that he did it to cover up all of Hillary’s baggage as long as he could..
If he changes now, it should show how weak of a candidate he is, how bad of judgment that he has, he will be MEGA pandering at the finish line.
It’s to late for him to change horses, people will see it as a dirty trick, and not just that but a weak ploy.

There’s room in any administration for dissent — would that Clinton’s cabinet shown some spine prior to the impeachment fiasco — but, unwashed hillbilly that I am, I thought that solidarity was the order of the day during an election campaign.
Maybe I’m wrong. Biden’s been in the Senate for 35 years…he has experience…which, I hear, Ms. Palin does not…maybe this is what experience teaches the aspiring politician….

COALition to Protect Coal Jobs–great idea! I just hope that the McCain/Palin campaign sticks with the “clean-coal” message (power from coal without the sulfur dioxide/acid rain and particulates) and avoids the carbon-sequestration message, which is an energy loser (see my previous post).
Biden, you magnificent b@stard, thanks for changing the subject for us! Over the last few weeks, Obama has been gaining in the polls by blaming the financial problems on Bush and the Republicans, but we LIKE to talk about coal and drilling and energy, especially in PA! Besides, on the energy issue, there won’t be any mixed messages from our side like the Obama/Biden confusion: Sarah Palin knows more about energy than the other three candidates combined!
Steve Z on September 23, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Folks, Eagleton option is off the Table…
You don’t vote for the ticket, even though its listed that way, you vote for the individual for VP.
Then the Electoral Collega has a SEPERATE tally for VP.
Its too late to get Clinton on the Ballot in all 50 states… too late to change from Biden… soooooo….
If no one VP candidate gets a majority of the Electoral College votes, it goes to the SENATE, who, can only vote for ONE OF THE TOP TWO VOTE GETTERS for VP…
My guess that will be Palin, and either a Green or Constitution party Candidate.
Unless Hillary can get on the ballot, she will not even be in the running for VP… and many states already have their ballots LOCKED.
Romeo13 on September 23, 2008 at 1:30 PM
If Chinese coal won’t kill us, melamine will.
Perhaps this is how WWIII will be managed. Poisoning us with their products as well as the air. Then buying stock here. Soon (if they don’t already) they will OWN us.
BTW-there’s already a lot of clean coal lying around. Why do you think they ship WY & MT coal out east? Bcs it’s CLEAN.
And how does Bozo Biden & Oblammo think they’re going to maintain the energy grid without coal? Tearing up dams out west to save fish puts more demand on coal energy. Wind can only give you so much. I agree that nuclear is a good way to go. Just please don’t put the waste in Yucca Mtn!
Badger40 on September 23, 2008 at 1:33 PM
I don’t know about that. The economy was a disaster in 1980 (much worse than now), and Reagan’s tight-money policy had his approval ratings in the 20’s in late 1982, but the economy rebounded strongly in 1983 and 1984, with Reagan re-elected by a landslide.
If McCain/Palin can get their platform enacted, the economy should be in good shape by 2012. The problem might be foot-dragging from the Democrats in Congress preventing the needed reforms, and if the reforms have to wait until a GOP Congress in 2011, they might be too late for the economy to show a strong rebound by 2012.

LOL… I love the Dems…
Yep, we’re all going to drive ELECTRIC CARS….
FACTS:
1 Barrel of oil = 1640.8 kilowatt hours
US used 9,468,000 barrels per day 7/25/08 for motor gasoline.
Or 15,535,094,400 Kilowatt hours equivalent in gasoline for transportation, PER DAY, or 15.5 Billion Kilowatt hours per day.
Total electricity generated by US in 2006, 4059 BILLION Kilowatt hours,
Or 11.12 Billion Kilowatt hours per day.
So, we would have to increase electricity generation by a factor of about 140% to meet our transportation requirements by going to all electric.
But we can’t use Nuclear, or Coal, to do it… and of course, all the infrastructure to transmit that power will just Magicaly appear.
