Video: On clean coal, Biden takes bold stand against, um, Obama’s position; Update: McCain launches coalition to protect coal jobs

Via the Standard, here’s the relevant plank of Team Barry’s plan for green jobs:
Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology.
Obama’s Department of Energy will enter into public private partnerships to develop five “first-of-a-kind” commercial scale coal-fired plants with clean carbon capture and sequestration technology.
And now here’s the Greasy one, summarily outsourcing those jobs to China. Did I or did I not tell you that the man’s a genius?
That’s twice now in about 18 hours that Biden’s undermined his own campaign. Are they just not cc’ing him on the memos anymore? Has the surging tide of Palinmania caused even Obama HQ to forget that he’s part of this campaign? Or is this all part of some dastardly Axelrodian plan to have him gaffe his way off the ticket, clearing the way for Her Majesty to come aboard and bring that stubborn 42 percent with her?
Not the only new gaffe of the morning either, do note. Exit question: Maybe this is all part of Al Gore’s master environmental strategy of China not having to go green until the U.S. does?
Update: Jay Cost makes an obvious point I should have flagged: This is going to play oh so sweetly in western Pennsylvania.
Update: Compare Biden’s direct condemnation in the clip — “We’re not supporting clean coal” and “No coal plants here in America” — with this balletic bit of spin from his spokesman:
The Democrats are responding by essentially reiterating Obama’s stance on the issue, implying that this was merely a matter of Biden speaking out of school.
“Senator McCain knows that Senator Obama and Senator Biden support clean coal technology,” says Biden spokesman David Wade. “Senator Biden’s point is that China is building coal plants with outdated technology every day, and the United States needs to lead by developing clean coal technologies. The Obama-Biden comprehensive energy plan will invest $150 billion over 10 years in clean energy technologies, including incentives to accelerate private sector investment in commercial scale zero-carbon coal facilities. The Obama-Biden Department of Energy is committed to developing 5 ‘first-of-a-kind’ commercial scale coal-fired plants with carbon capture and sequestration here in the United States.”
Update: Fresh off the presses from Team McCain. Go for the throat, Maverick!
ARLINGTON, VA — Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV), former Virginia Governor and Senator George Allen, former Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) and RNC Chairman Mike Duncan will announce the McCain-Palin campaign’s Coalition to Protect Coal Jobs, a nationwide group including members of Congress, state government and other influential leaders. The coalition will help spread the message about the importance of clean coal technology and the advantages of tapping the country’s vast coal reserves. As part of John McCain’s “all of the above” energy plan, the Lexington Project, clean coal will be a strong component of the drive to energy independence. In addition to providing domestic energy, the coal industry is a key part of the economy in several states.
John McCain’s support for clean coal technology is in sharp contrast to that of his opponents. Joe Biden visited Virginia on Saturday, saying that he was a “hard-coal miner” and that it was “nice to be back in coal country” while Obama supporter, Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA) said “Senator Obama’s a friend of coal.” But just two days later in Ohio, Senator Biden said he wants “no coal plants here in America” and that he and Senator Obama are “not supporting clean coal.”

Someone in the McCain camp please point out that Obama is running on “judgment to lead”, and yet his first political fundraiser was in Bill Ayers house, he thought Trinity United was a spiffy church, and he picked the Gaffe-Master 2000 (TM) as his running mate. This is sitting-duck stuff.

McCain campaign Commercial:
lorien1973 on September 23, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I smell something fishy going on here with Biden. He’s smacked down the Obama ad making fun of McCain’s emails experience. Now’s he crossing Obama on energy policy. He has made other bonehead comments lately.
I think this is a inside plan for him to make all these errors embarrassing the Obama campaign so that Obama is “forced” to make a change at VP. That leads to Hillary being brought in to save the day.
Hummer53 on September 23, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Here’s the new October suprise. Biden gets diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and has to leave the ticket making room for hillary.
BrianA on September 23, 2008 at 11:36 AM
I wonder if Biden is doing this on purpose so Barry can fire him as veep and take on Hillary. For the good of the party and country…
It would be too obviously a desperate ploy to dump Biden and claim that he suddenly took ill, but if Biden suddenly appears not to be a team player, Barry would have an excuse to ditch him.
Buy Danish on September 23, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Alright, so how much did it cost Karl Rove and Roger Stone to pay him off here? He can’t possibly be stupid enough to undermine his own campaign twice in 18 hours.

ChrisM on September 23, 2008 at 11:37 AM
No, if Biden leaves the ticket, it can’t be that Obama “forced” him out… that shows bad judgment and hurts them all politically. If he leaves the ticket, it has to be for health reasons (his or some family member’s). That’s the only way to do it “with honor.”

lorien1973 on September 23, 2008 at 11:39 AM
With so many recent examples of positions taken by Biden, contradicting Obama and the Dems, the idea of Biden as loose cannon is wishful thinking. The Obama campaign is nothing if not focused and disciplined.

They don’t mine in Northeast PA much anymore (industry collapsed in Scranton in the 80’s, I think), but I’m amazed that a guy who comes from a former coal city like Scranton would say that, knowing how much damage he’d be doing, both with active mining places and former mining towns.

For the next McCain ad, there should be a comparison of the amount of energy generated at a coal plant vs. wind or solar. Hammer home that the Dumbocrat plan does very little (at a higher cost) to increase domestic energy production.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 23, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Not just the mining ones. Here in North Texas the 100 car coal trains come down from the north on the Burlington/Northern main line. Day in, day out. Coal in, empties out.

drjohn on September 23, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Beyond the obvious Biden gaffe, we should pay attention to what Obama has written into his platform:
“commercial scale coal-fired plants with clean carbon capture and sequestration technology”.
This is different from “clean-coal” technology which tries to reduce emissions of real pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and particulates using fluidized beds or coal-gasification units, which McCain favors.
“Carbon capture and sequestration” means trying to separate carbon dioxide from remaining flue gases (mostly nitrogen and water vapor), and compressing the carbon dioxide to extremely high (supercritical) pressures for transport through long pipelines and injection into salt domes. This assumes the Al Gore worldview that carbon dioxide is the cause of global warming.
In this scheme, about 30% of the power generated by the coal-fired power plant is used to compress carbon dioxide, meaning that about 40% MORE coal is needed to generate the same net power as a plant without “sequestration”. In addition, salt domes suitable for injection of millions of tons of liquid carbon dioxide are few and far between, meaning that thousands of miles of pipelines would need to be built, not to transport useful fuel, but to transport carbon dioxide for burial.
The United States has more coal reserves than any other country in the world. If China doesn’t go along with limiting CO2, “carbon sequestration” would make coal-fired power plants prohibitively expensive here, and relatively cheap in China, essentially out-sourcing power generation there. We would be squandering a valuable resource (coal) and spend billions of dollars burying harmless soda pop gas, in the name of (maybe) making the world very slightly cooler. Don’t we have better things to do with our money?
