Video: Karzai encounters Barracuda

To think, we might have been denied this very illuminating video if Maverick hadn’t indulged the media its little tantrum.

Here’s a transcript of the tiny snippet of conversation overheard by that CNN pool reporter on the scene, although you’re better off with this AP piece featuring extra bits from her meetings with Alvaro and Kissinger. Exit quotation: “She knows the topic well.”

On Wednesday, McCain and Palin are expected to meet jointly with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko. Palin is then to meet separately with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

I would love to have photos of those meetings, you know the kind campaigns send out to donors? So cool.

“She knows the topic well.”

This is obviously a lie. Matt Damon, Maureen Dowd, and others (even some pundits on the right) have proven that by imperiously saying the opposite.

Her meeting with Kissinger, which lasted more than an hour, covered a range of national security and foreign policy issues, specifically Russia, Iran and China, Biegun said.

“Gov. Palin, in these meetings, is cognizant that she is a candidate for office, that she’s not, that there is a president of the United States and she is in the middle of a campaign for president of the United States,” Biegun said. “So rather than make specific policy prescriptions, she was largely listening, having an exchange of views and also very interested in forming a relationship with people she met with today.”

This has been my take of her foreign policy activities as well.

Is it just me, or is this the snarkiest lede paragraph ever, and that’s saying a lot for AP:

NEW YORK – Sarah Palin met her first world leaders Tuesday. It was a tightly controlled crash course on foreign policy for the Republican vice presidential candidate, the mayor-turned-governor who has been outside North America just once.

Palin sat down with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The conversation was private, the pictures public, meant to pad her resume for voters concerned about her lack of experience in world affairs.

I don’t get why people who haven’t been elected to national office yet are meeting heads of state.

Sort of like Obama meeting with Maliki in an end run around our own state department? Like that?

Also Palin meeting with them and apparently discussing their children is only going to emphasize her inexperience.

Or the fact that they are comfortable with her.

The Palin candidacy is a joke and there’s no way around it.

Okay, so what, exactly, has Sarah Palin accomplished?
Let’s see now…city councilwoman for 2 years; mayor for 6 years and president of Alaska Conference of Mayors; Chair of Alaska Conservation Commission; appointed Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from which she soon resigned in order to expose corruption among members of her own party; governor of a state that produces 20% of our national energy during which time she has replaced the entire Board of Agriculture and Conservation because of conflict of interest, passed a landmark ethics reform bill, used her veto power to cut budgetary spending; C-in-C of the Alaskan National Guard; negotiated a pipeline contract with a foreign power.

Clearly not qualified enough to be president. Oh wait…she’s running for the office of vice-president.

Gosh…how can this ever stack up against the impressive resume Obama has acquired over the years?

Let’s see now…Saul Alinsky-inspired “community organizer” who worked closely with the demonstrably corrupt ACORN group; questionable ties to the corrupt Daley political machine and unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers; 20 year-long membership in the church of an America-hating racist; shady real estate transaction with a convicted felon; got elected state senator in 1996 by using technicalities to clear the ballot of opponents; served in the part-time state senator job for 7 years, voting ‘present’ over 140 times; U.S. senator since 2004 after his opponent dropped out of the race; since 2006 has been actively campaigning for the presidency of the U.S.

And you say the PALIN candidacy is a joke? Obama isn’t qualified to be the vice-president…but he’s running for president. Yikes.

macblanegirl on September 23, 2008 at 5:20 PM

There isn’t much back and forth between the candidates. It’s question-answer. Both sides agreed to it. If you are having this discussion, I’d just point to Biden’s recent statements and wonder who is more likely to make an idiot of themselves?

If Palin and Biden get into a heated discussion on the merits of FDR talking on TV in 1929 about the stock market crash, though, I’m gonna cry.

lorien1973 on September 23, 2008 at 5:27 PM

I miss New York.

actually it was the dems and reps that agreed to it. The dems hoping that biden would not shoot his mouth off and the reps hoping that Palin can use her quick wit to score political points. In the debates she did in Alsaka Palin had a great ability to get to the heart of the question and offer a short detailed answer. No uh’s and umms and no waxing romanticlly about forced down helicopters etc. So the reps wanted to play to Palins’ stregth and the dems wanted to limit Biden’s negatives. Of course the press played it up to her inexperience but then that is the press.

Shorter than what? The format for the debate is always brokered. With each campaign trying to get the format they feel their canidate is best at. So I’m sure there is horse trading going on between campaigns and someone decided to spin something negative out there.

You also could spin that shorter answers give Palin more of a chance to show off on more topics rather than discuss only a few topics. Or that they don’t feel Biden is good at making concise responses.

This limits the Biden camp from knowing what she knows regarding foreign issues. You know there has got to be a Gotcha Group preparing all sorts of stump Sarah questions for the VP debate. There will be no footage for them to review in order to distort whatever would have been said between Palin and any of these foreign leaders. It could be that the foreign leaders requested no press due to what was being discussed. If the NYT cannot keep their traps shut over issues best kept quiet, then why would anyone want THIS media in on any discussions. THESE people cannot even report accurately the status of the Surge or the success of the Surge. The best day in this nation would be the day they all became unemployed!

THESE people wearing diapers cannot report accurately about THE MARIXTS LOVING JIHADIST SUPPORTING CANDIDATE FOR THE DNC! Give me a break! Haaretz.com, the website of the Israeli newspaper often cited as an example of Israel’s liberal, critical media carries paid advertisements from a website openly advocating the total destruction of the Palestinian people, the murder of large numbers of Muslim civilians, the assassination of the family members of Arab rulers, and the use of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons against dozens of countries.

I don’t get why people who haven’t been elected to national office yet are meeting heads of state. Also Palin meeting with them and apparently discussing their children is only going to emphasize her inexperience. The Palin candidacy is a joke and there’s no way around it.

B26354 on September 23, 2008 at 5:18 PM

I suppose that being the junior Senator from a single state is considered a higher office than THE Governer of a state?

Let me see–elected to be one of more than the many many people in congress or even one of 100 senators versus the one and only, very highest, the buck stops here, Cheif Executive of a most important energy rich state?

Hmmmm– yeah a lowly senator is much more important. That’s why they always win those Presidential races… oh yeah they don’t!

petunia on September 23, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Not in the chick magnet department. That always seemed a bit out of kilter somehow. Power attracts and the crafty old buzzard was wise enough to take advantage. – a capella on September 23, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I recall Kissinger once saying that power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Perhaps I’m just jealous

ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 5:48 PM

You also could spin that shorter answers give Palin more of a chance to show off on more topics rather than discuss only a few topics.

petunia on September 23, 2008 at 5:37 PM

That’s pretty much was the Mc Camp said. But the change, apparently, was at their behest.

This is from a stupid Arab website, see the problem. These are highly volatile news sources. Both of them
It is best to get a view not from a heavily slanted new organization.
Don’t be so easily duped…it is embarrassing.

Enough with the silly trutherism. I find it puzzling that whenever a so called “Republican” who is a well known FP leftie gets exposed, we always get the same knee jerk reaction from partisan idiots.

It applies to Pat Buchanan (when he was in the tank for The Party – not now), James “f*ck the Jews” Baker and Henry Kissinger. You should be ashamed, really.

I’m not getting my hopes up but… McCain has run a better race than I gave him credit for so they must know what they are doing.

petunia on September 23, 2008 at 5:51 PM

B26354 on September 23, 2008 at 5:18 PM

You’re missing the point. Every time there’s a discussion of Palin’s inexperience, the conversation shortly turns to Obama’s inexperience. One’s wants to be VP, whose official duties are to break ties in the Senate and go to state funerals while the other wants to be the Leader of the Free World. McCain, you magnificent bastard!

Actually, I thought it had to do with keeping Biden’s leash tight because he has a tendency to prattle on and on and on…

I speak from experience when I ask, what did she think of the smell?

srhoades on September 23, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Repeating myself here, but does NO ONE realize that there has never been a President elected with prior experience in the job (save a successful incumbent)—so what on earth does making a huge noise about the VP’s presidential experience accomplish?

Operation Slingblade S.O.B (Save Our Biden) is in effect. We must do everything we can to keep Biden on the ticket.

Remember: No Joe…No Justice.

ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:09 PM

If Palin and Biden get into a heated discussion on the merits of FDR talking on TV in 1929 about the stock market crash, though, I’m gonna cry.

lorien1973 on September 23, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Yep, that’s exactly what I just wrote about to her, after she tried to jump on Sarah about the I can see Alaska from my house thing.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

A hypocritical excuse to attack Sarah, IG. Nothing more.

ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:10 PM

after she tried to jump on Sarah about the I can see Alaska from my house thing.

Send her the unedited transcript (newsbusters has it i think). She had a great answer and then capped it with that at the end. So of course, they make that the answer via edit.

Yes, all world leaders need to hear her sage advice. Not since Geroge W. has there been such a great statesman and genius on the political stage.

foreverright on September 23, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Wait…I thought these were supposed to start with ‘As a concerned Christian’??

Or is the ‘foreverrright’ moniker alluding to a premise that you’re always right as opposed always on the right side of the isle in the political sense?

FAIL!!!

The only thing I read about Palin having a preference is that she prefers seated debates because she felt more comfortable with those when she was running for Governor. The Dems wanted a debate at a lecturn though and the Reps said o.k.

Limiting the open-ended debate section of the VP debate benefits both sides, but, it benefits the Dems the most. Most libs are claiming that Palin is unknown and we wanted to limit her ability to say something stupid. However, Biden is well known and it’s almost guaranteed that the longer he talks the more stupid stuff he’ll say. Additionally, the Dems know that Biden has a temper and is likely to come across as a bully if he goes after Palin.

Limiting the open-ended part is a win-win for everyone, but, it’s definitely a greater boost for the Dems than the Reps.

LIPSTICK DIPLOMACY….

I’ll take it.

seejanemom on September 23, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Palin believes dinosaurs lived at the same time as man. That pretty much disqualifies her from holding any high office.

You mistake me for someone who is here to defend Obama. I’m not. But I’m not going to defend the indefensible (Palin) either.

I have a question. Does a Senator have the same powers as a Governor as far as Foreign Policy?? Why do you always hears stories about State Governors going to foreign countries to help with trade agreements??? Why is a junior Senator meeting with heads of state??? Better yet, why is a junior Senator running for President of the United States take his campaign on a tour of Europe???

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer so you just might hear a tidbit here and there…
Your supposition is weak at best.
