A late afternoon palate cleanser, courtesy of half a dozen tipsters. Neither ticket is formally endorsed, of course, but given that they’re featuring a quote on their donation page from a guy who recently tangled with Biden and Pelosi on abortion, it ain’t exactly a religious mystery as to which side they prefer.

There were two flags raised at Iwo Jima, the first was a smaller flag that Pvt. Charlo helped raise. The second, most famous raising of the larger flag was done with the help of USMC Corporal Bradley, as shown in this diagram.

Yes, but it is also a statement to the liberal Catholics who will already be going and voting, and who will overlook their obligation to vote for life first and foremost.
I have been attending a series on the Bishops’ document “Faithful Citizenship” at one of the parishes in my area. There are a lot of Catholics who are and want to continue to support Obama. They were begging the priest who is doing the class to give them a legitimate reason to justify their vote. He wouldn’t but he also would not admit that there is none. (Not all of our clergy is as strong as those who have finally stepped up.) But the liberals are all laying their hopes and eternal souls on the whole ‘proportionate reason’ thing. That gives them an out if they can come up with one. Unfortunately, as Bishop Vasa, of Oregon, boldly said, there is not one. They don’t like it, but it’s a fact of Church teaching. This ad is, most of all, to remind those Catholics of this fact.
Any others that it brings is all the better.

This starts tomorrow. Prayer and fasting and vigils at Abortion clinics all to raise awareness before election…there is a nice, tiny Planned Parenthood on the street right below my house. Pretty neat, huh? At any rate, tomorrow through October 4, churches all around will be praying on the sidewalk in front of this clinic. I am Catholic and that ad totally blew me away. I’ve never seen anything so effective.
My 16 yo, Catholic-schooled, thought that it was ineffective at reaching non-Catholics. When I explained that the target audience is Catholics, he found it very effective.
Have to go and track down the link so that I can send it to all of the Catholics I know and hope that it is forwarded to the ones I don’t know.

All of the Iwo Jima Flag Raisers were Americans, and our flag symbolizes not only our nation, but all Americans. The raising of the flag in that place and on that day required the sacrifice of far too many American heroes. And every American can identify with them. To paraphrase Lincoln:

Regarding the Democratic ballot on the table, it has been so long since I’ve voted with an actual ballot sheet that I can’t remember how it works. But, it gave me the impression that it was saying don’t vote dem. Leave that ballot on the table and put the Republican one in the slot. I don’t know, but that’s the way I saw it.

Anyone who thinks this ad will change any minds is sniffing some kind of industrial solvent.
People are scared sh*tless about their financial future and the American economy that has been royally fu*ked mostly by the Republicans and to a much lesser degree by the Democrats; THAT is what this election is turning out to be about. The abortion issue couldn’t possibly be more on the back burner.
So you can parade around the town square all you like and hurrah that this is an amazing powerful ad, but its subject matter has fallen off just about everybody’s radar screen, displaced by real issues that are far more important to Americans’ survival.

I’m am a practicing Catholic and understand what my duties are as a voting American.
I don’t care if gas goes to $100 per gallon. I don’t understand utilitarians like Obama and all pro-abortion fake Catholics who think murder is cool for convenience.
I do know this. Even if murdering any one of you on this blog cured every disease known to man, I’d still be WRONG to do it. You want to give up your life voluntarily to cure every disease known to man, that is wonderful, and a great sacrifice.
Christ gives you the Cross. You either pick it up and struggle for God and live the Christian life knowing this world can never be perfect, or give up and live comfortably numb.

We love this clip because it reminds us that we would live and die for each other, and that includes you, even if you would choose to mock or belittle us for that very thing. It’s what our Constiution is about but even more than that, as Christians, it’s what our Savior did for us – died for us while we were spitting on Him. There’s no greater love than that.
I hope you can see that that’s what this is really about. It’s not about politics, not about gotchas. It’s about love for all human life. It really is a beautiful thing, and I hope you can see it for what it is.

Even though I’m a lifelong Protestant, I’ve always repected the moral positions taken and advocated by Pope JP2 and Pope Benedict XVI (as far as I’m concerned, Protestants and Catholics haven’t been enemies for centuries). Since Catholics look to the Pope as God’s leader of the Church on earth, it seems to me (as one on the outside looking in) that any person professing to be a Catholic should follow the popes direction and edicts. In other words, any one who claims to be a Catholic yet declares abortion to be acceptable IS NO CATHOLIC. Can my Catholic friends here enlighten me in any way?

Yes they do, and more importantly, people who waver between one side or the other, especially on the issue of LIFE, eventually make a decision. There are the independents or Democrats who need a reason to believe in the Republican party–and this LIFE issue will help.
The Pro-Death Party have sought to silence the Pro-Lifers for years. I was one who wavered, but this election, and the example of John McCain’s simple and immediate answer of “conception” when asked when life begins–and Sarah Palin’s unabashed Pro-Life stance and Pro-Life decisions, combined with my own research into abortion, have place me firmly in the LIFE camp.
Add to that the mind-boggling and unforgivable hypocrisy of the Left on what life the hold SACRED and what life they would EXTERMINATE for their own convenience (trees vs defenseless babies) and I will NEVER vote for the Party of Death. Ever.
The most powerful image of that video was that of the Firefighters, walking resolutely into the smoke.
No doubt for me–Life. I would never have voted for Obama…true, but this election clarified for me my position on the issue of abortion.

How dare anybody from Canada lecture Americans on rights and freedom of expression? Your own government hauls people in front of government thugs when the citizen says something deemed offensive (even from the pulpit – no freedom of worship in Canada, I guess). Alas, I see the day coming in this country when the concept of “free speech” is altered to exclude what some government overseer considers to be “hate speech”.
And as far as America’s place in the world, your own country seems to have benefited quite nicely from us hated Yanks: our military protects your sorry a**, we buys billions of dollars of oil from you, we drink the beer and whiskey you make, American tourists spend millions (if not billions) of dollars visiting Canada every year. So if you truly dislike us, shut down the border, reject our money, and build up your own military and protect yourself (of course that would also include a new uniform, one with a large yellow stripe down the back). I cannot answer your question. However, I know there is much that is wrong in this world. For example, I am wrong, far too frequently. While I am not a criminal, I forget things, get distracted from what’s important, make wrong choices, and say and do things that I shouldn’t.
What shall be done with me and others who make mistakes, but have not committed mortal crimes, like actually taking an innocent life?
In thinking about your question, I am reminded of the fundamental values I hold sacred, and I use my conscience to guide me. And so, in answer to my own question, I pray that as I forgive the trespasses of others, my trespasses shall also be forgiven.
The Church provides a means for me and other Catholics to confess our sins, do penance, and achieve reconciliation with God.
This ad is a powerful reminder of the fundamental values that Catholics hold sacred, and will help us consider our consciences more carefully before voting.

First I would like to say that this ad (which I don’t think is an accurate enough word) is the most powerful and moving “ad” I’ve ever seen. It looks like there might be some readers still in this thread so I’ve got a question. It might seem stupid or snarky, but it is neither. It is: How does someone become Catholic? I have a better than layman’s understanding (I think) of the structure/history/etc of the Catholic Church, so I know the Rites involved, I mean, how do you “get started?” Is there Sunday School for adults? Do you just go and ask someone before Mass? After? Do you ask the priest? I ask for two reasons: 1) I’m a fairly shy individual, and 2) I really don’t want to step on any toes or do anything improper. Example: My sense of logic tells me that I should approach the priest after the service, but this may well be a big faux-pas for a non-Catholic. I just don’t know. I changed my handle to my email (just lose the http part) if you want to respond that way, but I will also keep this thread open in a tab until I go to bed. So anyway, real question (even if it sounds dumb, which I agree, I think it does), just don’t want to tick anyone off and I think I’m finally ready to take this next step…

How to become a Catholic as an adult:
You can call the parish office and setting up an appointment with the Priest, or ask him for assistance after Mass. In either case, i am sure that he will help you as much as his schedule permits. There are adult catechism classes.

Not having any religious upbringing, I became a Catholic as an adult. The parish I first attended used inspirational music from many traditions, primarily Catholic of course, but also Protestant & Orthodox, such as this one.

You may approach the parish priest(s) or deacon at any time. There is a learning process that you would go through before baptism and confirmation and mostly anyone would be happy to help you or introduce you to the proper individuals.

I am actually excited for you. This, I am sure, will be a wonderful experience! If you are able to get the EWTN channel on TV, they have excellent Catholic programming and shows that include the viewers through phone calls and email! (EWTN = Eternal Word Television Network)

Yep. That’s what the choir is like in our larger churches. Make you think you were already in heaven. In most outward respects we are just like the Orthodox. Neverhteless, our creed is entirely Catholic and we regard the Pope of Rome as the Supreme Pontiff of the Holy Church.
Downside: the Romans don’t trust us and the Orthodox despise us as traitors.

I actually might stop by a Catholic church tomm.
I’ve always been turned off by the R.C’s Marianism/legalism and infant baptism + I have no problem with the death penalty or contraception.
That said, many years ago I was the official Jew in a Chicago Catholic teen choir…and I was treated wonderfully.
Though I’m a baptised Protestant, I’ll admit…I’m curious.

Vince, I looked, but it doesn’t appear to be available here. I’ll call the TV folks tomorrow though to make sure. I agree that it’s exciting, and something I’ve thought about for a while. And per M.R.’s comment, I obviously have some learning to do (and maybe some humility to learn also. Hmm, that sounds familiar too). Or maybe my self-so-called great font of knowledge doesn’t quite compare to that of actual, you know, Catholics. Ha! Anyway, thanks for all the info, tips, and support; I think this will be an interesting path to walk down…

I love the pure homonophy of eastern rite music. Of course, I also love the polyphony of the Catholic & Protestant classics. It’s good to be able to draw from many different voices, singing to the same purpose, for inspiration.
If the Church is to be the Universal Church, it must continue on the path it has taken in my lifetime and reach out to differing traditions.
This is one reason that I think this Catholic Vote 2008 ad is so powerful. While it is centered on Roman Catholic values, it reaches out to America as a whole. On the fundamentals, there really are far more things that unites us than divide us.
Of course, I may just be a hopelessly optimistic old fool, but that’s how I feel.
