Video: Catholic Vote’s new pro-life ad

A late afternoon palate cleanser, courtesy of half a dozen tipsters. Neither ticket is formally endorsed, of course, but given that they’re featuring a quote on their donation page from a guy who recently tangled with Biden and Pelosi on abortion, it ain’t exactly a religious mystery as to which side they prefer.

Wow, that is well done…absolutely a great election ad.
right2bright on September 23, 2008 at 5:56 PM
It’s a good ad, but people do not change their minds on strongly-held beliefs. Those who might change their minds because of this ad are likely to change them back as soon as a good pro-abortion ad comes along
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 5:57 PM
That was powerful. Is this a web ad only or is it running on TV like EWTN maybe?
D0WNT0WN on September 23, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Dang!
I’m an atheist and that was a powerful piece.
Just where are they going to get 2 minute segments to air it though?
Jim708 on September 23, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Very powerful, good job Catholics.
Maxx on September 23, 2008 at 6:00 PM
That was great. I got the same chills I did when I saw the first Oblivion trailer.
Darth Executor on September 23, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Brought tears to this old Marine’s eyes. Go McPalin!
bard on September 23, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Yes. They are right. And Janos Hunyadi, a good pro-abortion ad is an oxymoron.
gracie on September 23, 2008 at 6:02 PM
good video. Reminds people what is important

Holy smoke! Literally!
Think the musical background was dramatic enough?
morganfrost on September 23, 2008 at 6:03 PM
*sniff* Ugh. Troll breath.

Powerful imagery.

I have waited for 35 years for a good pro-abortion ad to come out. It hasn’t because you can not make murder look good to voters.
unseen on September 23, 2008 at 6:04 PM
beautiful… and powerful
theblacksheepwasright on September 23, 2008 at 6:04 PM
Wow. That is an awesome video. I do agree, no one’s going to change their minds based on the ad alone. Many Christians might be reminded which side supports life, and which side advocates throwing babies into a garbage can just because they had the misfortion of surviving an abortion.
Rode Werk on September 23, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Agreed. Properly edited, it would make for a powerful 30 second spot.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Forget changing minds momentarily and think GOTV.
Spirit of 1776 on September 23, 2008 at 6:06 PM
WOW! Best ad I have seen so far as to what is really at stake. Extremely moving! Thank you!
I believe this is why we see such hatred towards Sarah Palin and McCain. With the selection of Palin the Cultural War we are in has come to the forefront, whereas earlier the election was mostly about foreign policy and economics. Our success as a nation has always come down to the fact that our morals have by far trumped our enemies. Now, our enemies are within and we are not fighting Nazis overseas, but instead those that have the same ideologies regarding life.
This ad does get to the heart of what the Democrats are offering this nation. A culture of death. A culture of death to everything moral.
From the bottom of my Protestant heart I thank you Catholic Church for running this ad and may it run in every state in the Union! Thank you for stepping out there for my family and for our nation.
freeus on September 23, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Great ad! And that’s from someone who is neither religious nor particularly invested in the abortion debate. Very powerful.
hburns on September 23, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Wow. That was a pretty intense video. I love the music. Anyone know who does the music?
SoulGlo on September 23, 2008 at 6:07 PM
I like this ad.
That will be all.
Abby Adams on September 23, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Wow. Anybody know what that music is?

Ack it keeps stopping on everything you hold sacred!
upinak on September 23, 2008 at 6:08 PM
Don’t edit a thing. This isn’t youtube material. Don’t degrade it to a soundbite. 2 minutes is the least we can give to reflect on this.
gracie on September 23, 2008 at 6:09 PM
i think it is the same orchestra who does the last of the mohican soundtrack.
upinak on September 23, 2008 at 6:10 PM
That is an incredible ad. Wow, just wow.
Spirit of 1776 on September 23, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Probably won’t hurt that a significant percentage of people mistakenly think McCain is Catholic. :)
Spirit of 1776 on September 23, 2008 at 6:12 PM
With all due respect, Gracie, you don’t understand. The average Idjit voter has the attention span of a bolt of lightning. At the 2 minute mark this ad appeals only to those who already believe. In order to be effective for the purposes of the campaign, it has to be edited.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Wow. Very powerful.
edgehead on September 23, 2008 at 6:13 PM
That is beautiful and powerful.
laurendap on September 23, 2008 at 6:14 PM
A great ad. I hope my fellow Catholics realize the importance of the fundamental beliefs of life.
jencab on September 23, 2008 at 6:15 PM
That was a beautiful ad. It brought tears to my eyes.
I wonder if there is a hispanic version as it seemed to be mostly white and black people in it and most hispanics are Catholics.
Only weird part was the shot of guy voting and it said “Democratic Official Ballot” on the paper. Hope someone doesn’t get confused. Unlikely since the party of life is the Repubs.
mrsmwp on September 23, 2008 at 6:15 PM
And THAT lies at the core of Palin Derangement Syndrome. Nothing strikes terror in the heart of a self-hating Moloch worshipper more than a beautiful, happy young woman who worships God and chooses life over death.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:15 PM
What a powerful ad. Wow. I’m in tears.
This year, the Catholic Church is really front and center in the election. I don’t remember
so manyany priests speaking out against Democrats in my lifetime. Obviously, Obama has brought this on himself, but I have to think Palin’s embodiment of Christian values may energize Catholics as it has evangelicals.Terrie on September 23, 2008 at 6:15 PM
I agree with you that there is no ‘good’ way to advertise abortion, but the ‘good pro-abortion’ ad will be all about privacy and women’s rights and not forcing the victims of rape and incest to carry the child to term, etc
It will show women and doctors being led off to jail….
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Same thing as yesterday with the NRA ads. They’re meant to rally pro-life people and to try and draw in pro-life Democrat Catholics…like the working class ones in PA.
doubleplusundead on September 23, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Not weird at all. The ad is meant to sway Democrat Idjit voters.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Very moving.
And this ad isn’t about changing minds. It’s about getting Catholics out to vote their conscience.
csdeven on September 23, 2008 at 6:17 PM
You are correct. They might make shorter versions, but this shouldn’t be cut up. It deals with multiple topics from redefining marriage to pro-military to pro-life and it does that in a moving and stirring way. It should be publicized this way.
It’s not going to be attention span issue, everybody can follow the average movie trailer and this is better, it’s just a matter of paying for a whole break. But it is done, Microsoft did it just recently with their ads.
Spirit of 1776 on September 23, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Wow, I just might go back to the church. What grace, what power, how true!
winemkr on September 23, 2008 at 6:19 PM
yes, gracie, but the Other Side can and does crank out effective advertising focusing entirely on what it sees as the ‘trajedy’ of an unwanted pregnancy. You probably ignore these or turn away–I usually do–but they are out there and seem to have had an effect on public opinion and on individual choices
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 6:19 PM
Who will see this ad? Their churches are empty.
jay12 on September 23, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Grue in the Attic on September 23, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Did anyone else notice the pictures of Biden/Obama followed by McCain/Palin? They are paired in a way that opposes Obama to Palin. McCain and Biden are in profile, facing different directions. Obama and Palin are facing the viewer.
Effective subliminal? Or, my reaching too far?
DocKen on September 23, 2008 at 6:22 PM
“time to strengthen families, not redefine them”
+1
hippie_chucker on September 23, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Whoa, where’d I put the tissues?
Powerful.
ctmom on September 23, 2008 at 6:23 PM
You and ‘doubleplusundead’ are right, so I mostly retract my pessimism. If this ad rallies pro-life voters to support McCain in the next election–to vote for him instead of not voting or voting for OBH, it will have achieved its primary purpose
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Probably because Obama’s position on abortion is so repellently ghoulish. Obama’s extreme even by pro-choice standards.
doubleplusundead on September 23, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Dang, I just looked again.
The profiles are ok to pair McCain to Obama. But Obama is on the left and Palin is on the left. End of a stressful day, I guess.
DocKen on September 23, 2008 at 6:24 PM
That is true, but I don’t think the purpose of this ad is to change peoples’ minds, its purpose is to motivate people who are pro life to get out and vote.
Labamigo on September 23, 2008 at 6:25 PM
the liberal mindset is its above thier pay grade ,,strange that its never above thier pay grade to take a life just to save one
rico101 on September 23, 2008 at 6:25 PM
I think the ad is definitely pro-McCain/Palin, but did anyone see the ballot at the end of the clip?
It said “Democratic Official Ballot.”
nickj116 on September 23, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Speaking as a firmly secular ex-Catholic, that was a very powerful, very moving ad. One doesn’t have to be religious to be affected by the moral issues involved.

This should get play in Wisconsin, MN, PA and OH.

Yeah, nothing like a syringe being poked up a women’s body filled with some death solution, then the vacuum turned on to suck the fetus out of the women, all the while the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background.
The sound of the trash bin lid slamming down, the swipe of the credit card machine…and the look of the satisfaction of the 15 year old and her 24 year old boyfriend as they light up their cigarettes and walk hand and hand down the street…brings a tear to my eye…

Memo to Catholics talking politics:
Try to avoid the phrase “at stake”. It might make people think of a time when your organization was a bit too involved with government for our comfort.
Other than that, nicely done.
The Monster on September 23, 2008 at 6:36 PM
Doesn’t need a big media buy. It will be distributed and passed along via email to millions.
Sugar Land on September 23, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Near the end of the video it shows a DEM ballot on the table while the person is putting something in the slot. Does that mean that the paper going in the ballot box slot is the REP ballot?
texasgirl on September 23, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Brings us all back to earth, doesn’t it?
anniekc on September 23, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Given the millisecond attention span and mayfly memory of most Idjit voters I wouldn’t worry. Nice snarky dig at the Catholic Church, though.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Wow. That’s one of the more powerful ads I’ve seen this cycle.
BadgerHawk on September 23, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Last I saw, the sanctuary of Catholics Churches usually doesn’t feature a big screen TV.
Moron.
ManlyRash on September 23, 2008 at 6:43 PM
Hits home – can be highly effective
defendfaithandfamily on September 23, 2008 at 6:44 PM
they should have a shorter version and air it on tv.
venicesurfer on September 23, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Hot damn! When does the movie come out? That was fantastic.
argos on September 23, 2008 at 6:48 PM
Thanks! (Looked it up) That would be the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
RushBaby on September 23, 2008 at 6:52 PM
I happen to be an agnostic (atheist actually – a fallen away Catholic)and I’d like to think as someone in that category I might be able to be more objective than most.
I’ve been around for a LOT of election cycles (my earliest memory is of Eisenhower in ‘50), and in the intervening years I’ve seen a LOT of campaign slogans, advetisements, etc. on every conceivable subject, and political position.
This advertisement will go down in history as one of the greatest advertisements of all time. It matters not that it is political; it GRABS YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION and that’s what will make it a “classic”. Remember Macintosh’s 1984 ad? Still considered to be the single greatest ad of all time…This one is right up there with it.
alwyr on September 23, 2008 at 6:53 PM
I’m not catholic, but the ad makes me proud to be an American. If I was to be born today, let it be here, in this wonderful country.
Life!
NOBama.

1GooDDaDDy on September 23, 2008 at 6:54 PM
That is the most powerful political ad I have ever seen. It brought tears to my eyes.
And even though it didn’t endorse any candidate, only a fool would not know the political candidates and parties who support life and family values, and those who do not.
Veni Sancte Spiritus et emitte caelitus lucis tuae radium . . . Flecte quod est rigidum, fove quod est frigidum, rege quod est devium.

Brilliant.
Now grabbing a copy and posting elsewhere…

turfmann on September 23, 2008 at 7:03 PM
That’s the same argument Obama used when he killed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois, and basically gave to doctors the right to kill a Downs Syndrome child born alive, with nobody held accountable and nobody led off to jail.
After all, it’s the mother’s decision (or the prosecutor should the mother have been murdered) as to whether a pre-born baby is a person or not…
unclesmrgol on September 23, 2008 at 7:04 PM
The commercial that liberals are
a) incapable of understanding,
b) incapable of creating, and
c) going to be screaming, sputtering, cursing angry about.
Beautiful and powerful.
Jaibones on September 23, 2008 at 7:08 PM
WOW.
Goosebumps.
I am proud to be Catholic.
RightWired on September 23, 2008 at 7:09 PM
yes, I phrased my initial repsonse to start a discussion, and it did accomplish its purpose. Most of the peodple watching that ad here are predisposed to agree with and be affected by it, and I wanted to remind them that a significant number of people have contradictory feelings about this issue and can be swayed by effective advertising–for or against
The trolls who fester on this blog ( who are increasing ) argue that without them the threads would be an ‘echo chamber’, so I want to toss in a ‘caveat’ at the beginning
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 7:11 PM
I doff my fedora to the creative staff who produced this seminal powerful ad.
hoi polloi on September 23, 2008 at 7:12 PM
POWERFUL!!! POWERFUL!!!
The music sends chills up my spine. This is a very, very, very good advertisement.
Is it internet only? It seems too long for television.
lionheart on September 23, 2008 at 7:14 PM
Very very good ad. I really liked how they did the camera focus during much of it. Looked almost like cut outs over a background image. And the music. Very dramatic, but very effective. Really did make me feel proud to be an American.
coyoterex on September 23, 2008 at 7:20 PM
Actually McCain and Obama are in profile and Palin and Biden are face on.
Reading too much into it? Probably not. I don’t think there is three seconds of that piece that was not meticuously thought out.
Jim708 on September 23, 2008 at 7:21 PM
The ad……was too….long for…the unwashed masses to care and the…..supers….were….awkwardly placed and horribly timed.
Most Catholics put up with abortion and it simply is not a deal breaker for them. They’ll make their choice based on other much bigger issues that have far graver implications for the future of America than whether or not abortion is legal.
If the Wall Street crisis and Iraq and oil are 90 out of 100 on the importance scale, abortion is about a 12.
Now were all the flag raisers at Iwo Jima Catholics? This is inappropriate use of such footage.
Dave Rywall on September 23, 2008 at 7:24 PM
I agree with both those statements.
Loxodonta on September 23, 2008 at 7:27 PM
The ad is saying, in part:
Tzetzes on September 23, 2008 at 7:27 PM
DITTO! Listen here jay12, if there are not people in churches then why in the world were people wondering what James Dobson thought during the primaries? How about all that schtick about THE ONE trying to get Evangelical votes? Hmmmmm? Heard of The Bible Belt being a factor in politics and political races? Those folks have a tendency to attend church!
In addition, I was in Rome, Italy for Good Friday, and Easter. The place was packed and services were broadcasted on every television where there was a television. No tv in the Vatican, but out in the Square. Most amazing place I have ever seen. Funny how the Pope packed out those “churches” when he came to the U.S.
AND FYI, this is not necessarily about religion. I think it is more about morality. There are many a good person that has high morals, but are not religious. This ad is about having a conscious and voting for the ticket that has morals, not INFANTICIDE on their minds.
Sorry, I fed the troll, but that was FREAKING OFF THE CHARTS!
freeus on September 23, 2008 at 7:29 PM
Powerful. I’m glad I came back to the Church. Whatever the failings of some within it, the Church’s teachings are good and decent. I’m proud to be a Catholic and this ad hightlights some of the reasons for that.
nocomme1 on September 23, 2008 at 7:32 PM
They kind of flubbed it when they showed the “DEMOCRATIC OFFICIAL BALLOT” sitting on top of the ballot box as the person votes at the very end.
Otherwise, very well done. I wish they could have worked Fr. Mychal F. Judge in there, though.
gridlock2 on September 23, 2008 at 7:32 PM
this is…….sheer genius. Such clarity, such precise use of relevant facts……. / /
The troll Drywall does not know that this is a ’single-issue ad’ targeted at ’single-issue voters’–who have been shown to exist in voting studies since nationwide voting studies began in the 1950s. People who don’t care about the issue will likely not watch it–nor will people who are strongly pro-abortion
Many people–one third or more–vote enitrely or primarily on the basis of one issue; all others are ignored or discarded. This ad was meant primarily to reinforce existing pro-life voters rather than convince those who have no strong or fixed positions
If it does that–and gets them to vote for the pro-life candidates in Nov, then it is a success
Janos Hunyadi on September 23, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Quite stirring.
I’d totally send this off to all the Democrat voting Catholics I know…but I don’t know any. They all live in places like Delaware and New Jersey.
Nessuno on September 23, 2008 at 7:34 PM
What an amazing video. Incredibly well done.
