Maybe you gave me a lift, brother; my chauffeurs were TAD from Hood and Panama. I also operated out of San Miguel, sorta like Ilopango, but no spa or concierge.

While there is no completely safe area in any of those countries, I have to beg to differ on the idea that there is anything brave about being a pax on a short mission like that. The area they landed was most dangerous because of the terrain and not the enemy. (Not to mention the weather those crews were pressured to fly in) I flew out of Bagram for 13 months. All missions in OEF except for training close to major airfields has to be done, multi-aircraft. You have to have at least two helicopters to conduct a mission. But up to 13 miles from Bagram, you could be single-ship for training missions. We had even discussed the relative safety of single-ship missions in between Kabul and Bagram. That’s about 40 miles or so. So no matter how you crack it, Biden is embellishing big-time.

Afghanistan doesn’t have that kind of safe zone, and it takes some courage to tour the area by helicopter.
