Media threatens not to run video of Palin UN trip due to lack of access

A farce on all sides. If you take the logic here seriously, the difference between a “news” event whose footage is worth airing and a campaign photo op beneath the dignity of journalism is the presence of a single reporter observing the first few moments of pleasantries in Palin’s meetings with world leaders and maybe shouting a question or two which we all know she’ll ignore. Given those options, a thoughtful news org could go one of two ways: Decide that, in the absence of questioning, the whole thing’s nothing more than McCain propaganda and doesn’t warrant coverage even if the reporter’s allowed in, or decide that, whether or not the reporter’s allowed in, the video has some news value to at least some viewers and should therefore be aired but with a disclaimer noting that the McCain camp persists in conspicuously restricting access to their inexperienced would-be VP. Which option does our petulant media choose? Option three — threatening to suppress information unless meaningless editorial access to the photo op is granted. Good work.
The networks had arranged for a “pool” camera– one camera to cover the first few seconds of the meetings, whose video would be pooled or shared with all networks.
Such arrangements are standard when dealing with intimate high-level meetings between leaders and candidates.
But typically, along with cameras, there is an editorial presence– at least one print reporter, one television reporter, and one radio reporter is standard.
However today the McCain campaign told media covering Palin’s trip to New York that they would allow only one editorial person inside.
Then the campaign scaled back further, saying it will only allow a camera and no editorial presence.
The networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and Fox fiercely objected to the McCain campaign’s apparent effort to try to shield Palin from questions. Networks voted today to not use any video coming out of Palin’s meeting as a protest.
The campaign eventually backed down and let a CNN pool producer into the room. And what monster scoop awaited her when she arrived? Quote:
According to the CNN producer who was let into Karzai’s hotel suite with the photographers just before noon, Karzai was talking about his son. Palin was nodding, and asked what his name is. Karzai replied his name was Mirwais and explained that it means light of the house.
The media were escorted out after about 40 seconds.
Campaign aides subsequently announced that reporters would be allowed to accompany photographers into the later sessions with Uribe and Kissinger.
But not for that momentous exchange, the video might not have aired. Whew! As I say, it’s a farce on all sides: Follow the ABC link up top and read down near the end for a description of Palin ducking in the side entrance to the hotel to avoid reporters waiting in front. The whole campaign’s famously scaled down its interactions with the press — McCain himself will be doing his first presser in more than a month this afternoon, so the bruised egos of the Deciders should be on the mend — but their insistence on preventing spontaneous exchanges between her and the media, even on her campaign plane, is bizarre. Whether that’s because they’re afraid she won’t know the answers to their questions, I don’t know, but the longer it drags on and the louder the media whines, the more that impression’s going to be reinforced with undecided voters already iffy on her experience. Presumably they’re going to keep her sequestered until the debate, which is how most voters will judge her, and then relax her interactions with the press a bit in October to kill the “Palin won’t talk” meme. Let’s hope.
Update: Here’s the crap the media was ready to revolt over if they didn’t get to watch it firsthand:
Play-by-play: After the conclusion of the Karzai meeting, your pooler departed the InterContinental shortly after 12:35 p.m. EST in the motorcade headed for 14 E. 76th St. We arrived 12 minutes later, and your pool held briefly in an unlit, musty hallway. We then climbed a white, carpeted staircase and were escorted into an ornate room with a large glass chandelier where the meeting was held.
Your pool was for half a minute. Palin was already seated on a pink stuffed chair, to the right of Uribe, with her legs crossed and her body titled forward. They exchanged pleasantries that your pooler could not hear over the loud clicks of the cameras. On a couch to her right (a few feet back but perpendicular to her chair) sat Scheunemann and Biegun.

So, instead of a

Good job, McCain camp. Thumbs up.
Yep. McCain has really handled Palin poorly this whole time. They had a gold mine, now it’s just a silver mine. (Or a coal mine, depending if you want a gratuitous biden reference).

the only way I see Repubs. can counter the current Press Regime is to have your own camera man there at all times and place on the internet the same footage unedited that the MSM end up placing on TV.
we need a Media for the Media. Been saying for years that a Cable TV version of Newsbusters that was ran cimilar to CNN Headline news would do well, IMO.

The press is obviously extremely hostile to her, because she is a conservative. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I’m not willing to concede that she has nearly as much trouble answering questions as some people (mostly on the left) seem to imply. They’ve put her in a Catch-22 situation, and then they act like it’s exclusively her fault.

How about a camera following the press to catch their slipups?
aunursa on September 23, 2008 at 2:33 PM
I think the limited press access is likely due to two things: anger at the press over their initial frenzy; and the knowledge that some funny guy is just aching to pull an Andy Hiller and ask meaningless questions about meaningless crap.

Why didn’t he blow the whistle on Rezko?
Why didn’t Obama expose ANY corruption in Chicago?
Why did Obama continue to Take Money from Rezko after 1997, After Rezko did NOT heat the Buildings in Obama’s district?
Why did Obama do a Land and House deal with Rezko After He was outed and known to be totally corrupt?
Why did Obama sell out his own constituents for Campaign cash?

Why didn’t Obama ASK to testify in the Rezko trial, he was friends with Rezko for 17 years and it has his responsibility to his constituents to make sure that Rezko went to jail, and to see that justice was served.
Chakra Hammer on September 23, 2008 at 2:38 PM
The press is not an honest broker. I think the McCain camp thinks that all they are after are gaffes and nothing else and they are biting their time.
The debate are important and it’s building anticipation for it. If she nails it than this is a game changer all over again. Than she can go back to the back of the plane and make small talk.
I really don’t trust journalists anymore. It’s sad but true. The bias is so strong it stinks.

While the media is obviously in the tank for Obama, a more skilled Republican politician should have been able to stroke the MSM’s ego enough to keep them from full attack mode.
As it is, McCain has only further encouraged the media to go after him and Gov. Palin.
And like it or not, the bulk of Americans still get their news from the MSM.

HoosierCon on September 23, 2008 at 2:41 PM
The McCain campaign should hire its own video crew and release this video to Andrew Breitbart, Drudge, and other alternative media sites.
It should also prepare audio for talk radio hosts.
Sir Andrew on September 23, 2008 at 2:41 PM
The press is her enemy and not showing her interviews speaks volumes about them. Obama had private meetings in Europe so why didn’t they threaten him? This is just the left wing press being themselves. I’m getting sick and tired of these “C” average journalist majors thinking they are some kind of privileged entity. We should reallocate the people’s electromagnetic spectrum to non-political broadcast organizations that will present news instead of propaganda.
rplat on September 23, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Maybe the campaign knows that people who are suppose to be in their corner, really are not. Maybe they actually read blogs and know some are in the tank for the other side, and only post negative things about Palin, just maybe.
WoosterOh on September 23, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Slublog on September 23, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Presumably she’s relatively soft on Foreign Policy and even policy in general other than energy and a few other national issues. I think that’s just a given considering her virtual “out of nowhere” injection into the race.
So you either expose her to the “stump the Republican VP” press now, or keep her out until the debate and prep her in the interim.
Makes sense to to the latter.

Well, to be honest, her being nominated was ‘provocation’ enough in their minds.
I’m not saying that the MSM could be turned from the dark side.
What I’m saying is that a better skilled politician (and his campaign) would have done a little ‘ego stroking’ of the MSM – enough to keep them from their continuous screeching.
By declaring war on the media John McCain now has to fight two opponents (yes, I know – the MSM declared ‘war’ first).
And while blogging and the internet have made enormous strides toward becoming mainstream, the bulk of America still gets their news from the MSM.
So intentionally (further) antagonizing them only hurts his campaign.
UNLESS he is setting up a brilliant campaign that will make all of America wake up and smell the bias.
I’m not too confident about that happening, though.
Religious_Zealot on September 23, 2008 at 2:47 PM
My questions for all of the McCain-Palin campaign’s defenders on this issue:
1.) Do you feel as though you know enough about Palin’s understanding of the issues, and her positions on them, to be comfortable with her as President should the occasion arise?
2.) Are there any questions that you would like to ask her, or are you content with the amount of information coming out of the campaign at this point?
Before you go into bash-the-liberal-media mode, think about these.
Big S on September 23, 2008 at 2:47 PM
She is doing town hall events answering questions directly posed to her by voters.
Questions through the vaunted press prism ala Charlie Gibson which are misquotes and distortions do no good.
Topsecretk9 on September 23, 2008 at 2:47 PM
Is it because they are afraid of Palin saying something wrong or is it because they are afraid the media will take anything she says, cut it up, twist it and put it out there to smear her?
They tried to play with the media by giving Gibson access and what they got was a badly edited interview which left out parts of her answers which would have cast her in a better light.

media should be there to ask questions. i know why they have her in a cone of silence but she should face the media. especially during important events like these.
venicesurfer on September 23, 2008 at 2:49 PM
While I do think you are right, this was probably a skirmish that did not need to be fought at this time. Having said that, this really is a minor skirmish, with neither side really coming out on top. Yes, CNN got their reporter and producer, but Palin made her point by keeping the print and wire reporters out, and as expected the media spun it anyway.
Now, if I were McCain, I would use that press conference he’s got planned today to launch a full scale salvo on the press–putting out into the full sunlight–without sounding like he’s whining–that’s the important thing. I would point towards Reshko, Ayers, Obama’s campaign donations from Freddie and Fannie, and a whole lot of other dirty laundry and demand to know why they are not doing their jobs! And I would also make sure the press knows that I’ve got my people recording this on audio and video and that I’m going to make sure that this goes viral everywhere and that everywhere I speak, I am going to demand the same questions–why isn’t the press objectively covering this campaign–until it decides to do its job.

I’d like to know a lot more about her specific policy positions and understanding of the issues, but the media hasn’t even really made an attempt to ask those kinds of questions.
Gibson had a chance to ask her all kinds of important questions and instead he chopped past quotes of hers to paint a picture of her as a dumb zealot. News outlets aren’t running balanced pieces on Gov. Palin vis a vis the issues, so I don’t really see how it benefits McCain to give them more opportunities to smear her. If Couris manages to give a a tough but honest interview I suspect the press restrictions will loosen up considerably.

We saw with our own eyes that the best part of her answer regarding Russia ended up on the cutting room floor.
No one will ever convince me that they aren’t actively trying to make her appear stupid, when they know she isn’t.
I can’t offer a solution on how to combat it, but I don’t think it’s necessary to “stroke their egos” (like that would change anything). May as well be honest about who they are, and if they want access to her, they can start to act like actual journalists instead of advocates for Obama and Biden.
capitalist piglet on September 23, 2008 at 3:00 PM
To answer your questions:
1) Yes. I think should the unfortunate circumstance arise where she has to take over, that she will do a good job as President.
2) Of course there are questions I would like to ask her; and I’m sure that if I were to be able to ask a question of her at a town meeting either actual or virtual, that she would answer them to the best of her ability. I am receiving a good background–and far more objective background on Governor Palin through the alternative media than I would ever receive through the biased (and sophomoric) traditional media.
Now, Big S, since I answered your questions politely and courteously and honestly, I would like to ask you a couple of questions which I would that you would answer as equally politely and courteously and honestly:
1) Are you really comfortable not knowing the full extent of Senator Obama’s ties to Tony Resko, Bill Ayers, and the Chicago Daley Machine?
2) Do you really think the press delving into Governor Palin’s daughter’s private life is really germane as regards the Vice Presidency? What would your reaction be if Senator Obama’s children were subjected to a similar microscope?
3) Are you really comfortable with the lack of press reportage on Senator Obama’s ties with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? Do you know that he received the second largest amount of contributions from those bodies in the US Senate. Only Chris Dodd received more and Obama received his contributions in a far shorter period of time.
Matt Helm on September 23, 2008 at 3:01 PM
The thing is, at a press conference, a whole bunch of reporters show up and shout questions on a whole range of issues. If Palin could handle them, she could show off her smarts by answering relevant issues questions, and lay the smack down on the reporters asking stupid or irrelevant questions. The fact that the McCain chooses not to take advantage of this opportunity is unfortunate and even a bit worrisome.

My order of preference of the 4 people involved, based on all I currently know about them: McCain, Palin, Biden, Obama. Does that answer #1 for you?
There’s a big difference between the questions I’d like to ask her and what the news is likely to ask. I know that she is pro-life and Obama voted to let infants born alive during an abortion die. I know she is concerned about her sister’s business succeeding and Obama could give a sh*t about his brother living in a shack on $12 a year when he made $4.2 million last year. I know she doesn’t talk to one group of people that may be better off than another and use that as an opportunity to disparage them (clingers…guns…bibles). What other information about Obama do I need to know?

That’s a valid point, but I get this picture in my head of reporters literally shouting things like Troopergate and Rapekit and not asking her any questions about policy. In that situation Gov. Keep showing disdain for the press. That’s how the rest of the country feels. Sarah haters won’t be swayed by anything she says. Sarah lovers don’t care. And there is no such thing as an “independent” or undecided. Give me a break. Undecideds simply haven’t TOLD anyone yet who they are voting for. If you are truly “undecided” at this point, you’re a dolt and shouldn’t be allowed to vote anyway.

Yeah, the media that sat on the airplane in Chicago while Obama stayed behind and met with Hillary on very important, secret matters like unity.
The same media that is represented by Karen Tumulty, who wrote several posts while aboard the tarmack-stuck Obama plane in Europe, drinking wine and singing songs while Obama did who knows what. Not complaining, mind you, just writing a travel journal.
The same media that asked important questions of foreign leaders like Amanpours “Obam is dark skinned and so where the French rioters” nonsense.
The same media that accompanied Obama to his daughter’s first day of school.
I think Palin should throw the press a bone and yell out answers to their questions as she goes in and out.
I do think she needs to answer questions.

Maybe, they should have just said something about wanting to actually meet these people in private because at some point she may need to deal with them and have a relationship with them. All of which would be better served by private meetings. Or they could have not told the media until afterward.
But there really is no point in trying to get good press out of the MSM even Fox anymore. They have all decided who should be President and that truth is beside the point anyway.

Now, go ahead MSM, do it again. Paint her as a stupid, know-nothing, gun-toting moose-eating hot babe with nothing upstairs and come Oct 2, she will do it to you AGAIN.
She will blow right past the media and talk directly to the American people, just like she did at the convention.
McBrilliant…I can’t believe it, but he just might be.
JustTruth101 on September 23, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Yeah the quote on TV talking about this being her “first meeting ever” with foreign leaders and stressing that point did seem a little over the top. For her they made it sound like an amateur and with Obama they made it sound like it was an unveiling, showing their bias. Of course Obama is not running as a yokel so that also causes differences in perceptions as well.
LevStrauss on September 23, 2008 at 3:12 PM
I don’t agree with that at all. First of all, she’s still a gold mine. I believe she remains so precisely because she isn’t being overexposed. Obama was greatly overexposed and that lead to Obama fatigue. The dramatic effect of Palin is best used/saved upon introduction, at the convention, in the debate and hyper-active exposure about two weeks before the election.

I’d like to get a few members of the press on video/audio, letting it slip what their real mission is. We already know, but proof would be awesome.

That board wax must be clogging your brains.
No one answers questions at these meetings, never has, never will.
They usually let a couple of news guys in to make them feel good, the news guys yell out a few questions that are ignored as the “conference” breaks up. It has been happening like that for decades, think one slip of the tongue and the whole meeting is lost forever. A (any) reporter is incapable of asking an intelligent question, therefore they are ignored.

Why bother, when they keep shooting themselves in the foot?
Jim Treacher on September 23, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Biden is by no means brilliant, or a polished candidate, but he’s a good BSer from Scranton and can argue rather well. The debates have always been his strong point, even when nobody would vote for him in the primaries it was generally agreed upon that he won most of the Dem debates.
LevStrauss on September 23, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Also, P.S. Gwen Ifill (the vp debate moderator) wrote a book where Obama was 1/4 of the book…why the h@ll should the campaign give Ifill ANY ammunition to use against Palin? This is WAR and the enemy is both Ifill and the MSM and I wouldn’t let the enemy see the totality of my secret weapon, either, if I was McCain. He’s playing this well.
JustTruth101 on September 23, 2008 at 3:15 PM
No, she is not “running as a yokel”, she is being made to appear as one–there’s a difference, but then, I’m sure you’re aware of that…
Matt Helm on September 23, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Oh, if only the Obamanation’s camp could keep Biden sequestered from the press until the debates, think of how many gaffes would be unmined?
eaglewingz08 on September 23, 2008 at 3:17 PM
More whining, this time from CBS.
Wow. Just imagine the tantrums if she had stopped into a Chucky Cheese without them.

What happens when you don’t want to show your brand new toy to all of your friends? They get jealous.
Sarah is like a brand new toy or coin, that everyone wants to see, yet you are stingy. Your friends get mad, they get angry, they threaten you…. and when you finally show them and let them play, they get bored and walk away from it.
McCain isn’t stupid. He is making sure his “Coin” isn’t going to get tarnished before the elections.
upinak on September 23, 2008 at 3:17 PM
Yeah, pulling in 60,000 people while in the same city the next day Obama pulls in 6,000…
That doesn’t sound like a loser to me. Good try though, you Palin haters have to try everything.
right2bright on September 23, 2008 at 3:17 PM
I’d like to see TMZ or somebody ambush some of these MSM anchors and see how they like it.
CP on September 23, 2008 at 3:17 PM
Allah,
Do you have any idea what Palinmania does to the people?
A. They don’t give a crap about what you just said, or, the media says or doesn’t say.
Mcguyver on September 23, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Oh please Big S tell me when Obama has ever been asked any question at all? The press fawns over his every word. His lies and corruption is covered up. Don’t you think these questions should be asked about Obama before you go off on your paranoia over Palin?
Obama looks likely to be President. He is an empty slate carrying the image of what ever position an individual wants to see in him. No real policy. No real expectation of excellence or accomplishment. Just a card board cut out of a canidate. Who calls every question a “distraction” from his hypnoic effect on the media. And apparently of Big S.

Good grief. “Stifle editorial coverage?” They’re laying it on pretty think, aren’t they?
Slublog on September 23, 2008 at 3:19 PM
upinak, you’re in AK I take it from your handle (is that right?) If so, tell me, is Palin as good off the cuff as she is giving speeches? Can i expect as good a performance at the debate as we got form the convention, or is she better on teleprompter…you can tell me straight, I can take it…I need to have realistic expectations so this election doesn’t give me a heart attack…
