AP poll: Hillary voters’ support for Obama unchanged since her endorsement

In fairness, other polls like Pew and ABC have shown The One making inroads with Clintonites. But let’s not let minor details spoil the mood.

58 percent for Obama among Hillary nuts three months ago, 58 percent for him among Hillary nuts now:

Barack Obama’s support from backers of Hillary Rodham Clinton is stuck smack where it was in June, a poll showed Tuesday, a stunning lack of progress that is weakening him with members of the Democratic Party in the close presidential race…

The problem that supporters of Clinton, the New York senator, have with Obama seems to flow from their measure of him as a candidate, not from issues. From establishing a timeline for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq to abortion to canceling tax cuts on the rich, their views of the importance of issues are virtually identical to Democrats in general.

Yet they find Obama less likable, honest, experienced and inspiring than Democrats overall do, and have a better view of McCain. And while majorities of Clinton supporters say Obama shares their values and understands ordinary Americans, they’re less likely to say so than Democrats overall.

He is viewed more favorably by Hillary supporters now, but then so is McCain. The money data point comes not in the crosstabs, which are largely useless, but in the sidebar graphic accompanying the article. Among all Clintonites the Palin pick is a wash, with 21 percent saying it makes them more likely to vote for McCain versus 21 percent saying less. But when the question’s refined to undecided Clintonites, the needle jumps: Roughly 45 percent say more likely versus only five percent or so who say less. Oddly enough, the AP doesn’t mention that in the article.

A few random data points from the crosstabs. First, is this a commentary on how liberal The One is or a commentary on how little known Ralph Nader’s politics are, even now?

Second, no comment needed:

And finally, I’m loath to interpret this data, but pair it with this past weekend’s AP poll on race (in particular, what it found about Hillary’s supporters) and draw your own conclusions:

Strangest of all, on the head to head question against Obama among four “waves” of respondents sampled, McCain does surprisingly well despite a massive oversampling of Democrats, 12 points more than Republicans for some waves and 14 points more if leaners are included. I assume that’s a product of the post-convention bounce; the poll was conducted from Sept. 5 to 15, which includes the period when Maverick led nationally for awhile. Exit question: Why can’t Hillary convert her PUMAs, especially after the tag-team Clinton performances at the convention? Is it because they know she doesn’t really want to see Obama elected, or is it simply not about Hillary anymore?

Exit question: Why can’t Hillary convert her PUMAs

Once a PUMA goes Mac it never goes back?

BadgerHawk on September 23, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Is it because they know she doesn’t really want to see Obama elected…

Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner!

Physics Geek on September 23, 2008 at 11:05 AM

I guess all of these Clinton backers for Obama missed Der Slickmeister’ performance on The View yesterday. Were these people polled before, or after, Billy Jeff said it was OK to vote for McCain/Palin?

fogw on September 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Exit question: Why can’t Hillary convert her PUMAs,

Because they are confused and their loyalties are divided.

BigD on September 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Bill and Hill would throw the party of the decade on November 5th if Empty Suite Barry Hussein gets pounded by Johnny Mac…..

it would take Bill about a week to let something slip about how he treated his darling…..lol

Why can’t Hillary convert her PUMAs

Because she doesn’t want to.

“Is it because they know she doesn’t really want to see Obama elected,….”

If I had to guess, probably so.

tgharris on September 23, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Maybe it was because…

“Hello I’m Hillary Clinton and I..excuse me I must have something in my eye, wink, wink, wink..support Barrack Obama to be our next President of the United States.”

shick on September 23, 2008 at 11:15 AM

These are all ‘Looking Glass’ polls right now. Mac up, or Barry up, the pollsters are polling a public that can’t make up it’s mind over what to have for breakfast. The first poll that will matter is the one on 9/29, three days after the first debate. Everything rides on Friday night in Mississippi.

Maybe it has something to do with both Bill and Hill hitting the talk show circuit/news circuit stumping for Mccain?

SaintOlaf on September 23, 2008 at 11:15 AM

You know that Shillary is privately hoping for a major B.O. defeat the size of Godzilla in November, as she waits quietly in the wings for 2012 to roll around.

pilamaye on September 23, 2008 at 11:16 AM

I really don’t know what to say about the Clintons. I saw Hillary earlier on a morning program:CBS I think. She was supporting Obama and his economic plan. So I really don’t know what the Clinton’s want. Maybe they changed theier mind and want an Obama presidency. God only knows.

clemycali on September 23, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Bill Clinton going on the view and not dissing McCain helps…

right2bright on September 23, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Well I recently went to a McCain/Palin rally (the one in Lebanon, OH) and I was standing near 3 Hillary supporters.

They said that Hillary didn’t want to support Obama, instead someone had “gotten to her”. Not sure what they meant by that but Hillary’s public support of Obama seemed like it had turned them off even more.

Totally anecdotal I know but I thought it was interesting.

Kronos on September 23, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Pretty soon racist women with no teeth will be Palin’s base.

tomas on September 23, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Is it because they know she doesn’t really want to see Obama elected,

Exactly–does anyone really believe Hillary would support an upstart Chicago thug who at one time gave her the finger at a rally?

I still believe that a bunch of the so-called “Hillary Supporters” were really just democrats who *opposed* Obama. And having Hillary tell them she now supports Obama isn’t going to do anything for these voters.

ClintACK on September 23, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Hillary!’s supporters are well aware she’s supporting Barry for the ‘good of the party’. Period. What the Clinton’s say in private is probably a whole other story.

Bill doesn’t forget a slight, and Barry has given him several.
His performance on The View was FLAT and uninspiring.

Guess the Clinton’s never did get that check from Barry.

GarandFan on September 23, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Hillary did a fantastic job of making sure the Anti-Nuclear-Iran rally became a pro-Palin rally. It worked so well I’m wondering if that was her intention all along.

Quisp on September 23, 2008 at 11:42 AM

100% of AP behind any disrespect of Palin. Now that’s a poll AP can analyze!

Fuquay Steve on September 23, 2008 at 11:45 AM

Only a matter of time before all those naughty PUMA’s are exposed for the racist’s they obviously, must be!

anniekc on September 23, 2008 at 11:54 AM

The cult of Obama overcame the cult of Clinton. Anybody who thinks Hillary would truly push for Obama just doesn’t understand the basics of megalomania and narcissism.

SKYFOX on September 23, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Well, I received this in an e-mail from a friend of a friend of a friend. Don’t know if there’s any truth in it, but it makes for an interesting concept. This way Hillary wouldn’t have to debate Sarah.

“…from excellent sources within the DNC:
On or about October 5th, Biden will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems, and he will be replaced by Hillary. This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.

I have already seen a few short blurbs about this – the ‘health problem’ cited in those articles was aneurysm. Probably many of you have heard the same rumblings. However, at this point, with this inside info from the DNC, it looks like this Obama strategy will be a go. Therefore, it seems that the best strategy is to get out in front of this obama maneuver, spell it out in detail, and thereby expose it for the grand manipulation that it is. So, let’s start mixing this one up and cut the obamites off at the pass – send this info out to as many people as you can – post about it on websites and blogs – etc., etc.”

You go into these big cities in the Northeast and, like a lot of big cities in the Midwest and West Coast, they haven’t had a real liberal as President now for 27 years and nothing’s replaced that… And they fell for the Clinton Administration, and hate the Bush Administration, and each Democratic candidate has said that somehow these liberals are gonna regain power and they have not.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to Hillary or BDS or antipathy to me who isn’t like them… (Did I mention that I’m Black?) … as a way to express their frustrations.

Loxodonta on September 23, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Like I said the day she refused to attend the UN protest because Sarah was invited. This is an attempt to sandbag Oslime-a so she is the shoe in candidate for 2012.

That’s pretty clever of you….making racist statements against whites while in the same breath criticizing racism.

Oh boy..you libs sure are smarter than us white, toothless, “knuckledraggers”.

Why can’t Hillary convert her PUMAs

?

Because Billy Jeff has given them a permission slip to vote for McMav/’Cuda !

O! should’a written Billy Jeff that check when he could have…

Now?
It’s soooooooo on!
O! had no idea who he was dealing with…

As O! gleefully says he’s bringing a gun to Mav’s knife fight, he forgot about Billy Jeff and Hillz with their nuc-u-lar crooz missle !
