Survey USA: Obama by six in Virginia, up four points in two weeks; Update: Women indifferent to Palin’s abortion position?
posted at 3:05 pm on September 22, 2008 by Allahpundit
The margins in Gallup and Rasmussen are unchanged from yesterday and probably/hopefully won’t move much before Friday’s debate so we need new polls to obsess over. How does Virginia turnin’ baby blue grab you?
Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released one week ago, Obama is up 1 point; McCain is down 1 point; compared to a SurveyUSA poll two weeks ago, Obama is up 4, McCain is down 4.
Since 1952, Virginia has voted Republican 13 times and Democrat only once, in 1964. Today: In the Washington DC suburbs, Obama now polls at 59% and leads McCain by 21 points. Obama leads by 10 in Southeast VA and by 4 in Central VA. McCain’s regional advantage is confined to the Shenandoah, where he is 14 points atop Obama. Among women, Obama led by 6 points before Sarah Palin was named to the GOP ticket, now leads by 16.
The good news: Survey USA consistently shows Obama doing better in the state than any other major pollster, some of whom have Maverick up big. The bad news: Survey USA’s usually pretty accurate. But never mind that. How do we explain the two-week bounce? If it’s all collateral damage from the financial meltdown, you’d expect to have seen the bulk of it last week, not the week before. That collapse in support for the ‘Cuda among women is eye-popping, although I’m not sure how to square it with the data from the new Lifetime poll showing a monster 34-point swing towards McCain on the question of which candidate better understands women and their concerns. Having to guess, I’d guess women didn’t like what they saw in the Gibson interview, but the obvious culprit — Palin’s position on abortion — doesn’t jibe with the big gain in understanding women’s “concerns.” Any theories?
Update: Ugh. Obama by five, says Hotline’s daily tracker, up four from yesterday. It looks like it’s coming from indies, doubtless due to economic concerns. Note: “Among women, Obama/Biden hold a 13% margin — equalling their largest lead among women in the tracking poll.” Women also gave Obama a huge advantage on the economy in the Lifetime poll.
Update: There’s more to Palin’s “ordinary gal” persona than just the gal part, of course:
The Palin pick also appears to be a galvanizing force among rural voters as a whole, according to another new poll – also out today – from the Center for Rural Strategies. Among respondents in the rural regions of thirteen battleground states, half said that Palin’s presence on the ticket has made them more likely to support McCain in November. But the poll’s results, which showed a 51-41 advantage for McCain, also underscore the deafening concern over the economy that dominates voters’ decision making. Fifty-one percent of the rural residents surveyed placed the economy and jobs at the top of the list, with other issues like energy (25%) and the war (21%) comparatively left in the dust.
Update: A key nugget from the Lifetime poll that explodes the abortion theory: Women don’t seem overly concerned about it.
The poll also looked at women’s views on Governor Palin and found that a majority (52%) of women had a mostly positive view while 29% were mostly negative and 13 percent neutral.
Of the women who had negative views, 48 percent said it was because of the governor’s position on the issues. Of that 48 percent, just 18 percent pointed to her pro-life position as the main position they opposed.
That means just 2.5 percent of all women surveyed in the poll indicated they disagree with Palin on the issues and say abortion is the reason why.

Many remain registered to vote in their home of record. I lived in Cali, Texas, and Maryland while I was AD, but I stayed registered to vote in Delaware until I became a civilian. So they may live here, but do not vote here.

SUSA leans Obama in VA because it has been polling VA on weekends.
Which makes it twice as amusing when they give you the crosstabs for how often those polled attend religious services.
What do you think the Sunday sample looks like?

Honestly, I see so very few McCain bumper stickers/campaign signs in Hampton Roads that it is really depressing. Save for one brave sould in Norfolk, I haven’t seen any in the city.
(For those who don’t live in SE Virginia, the region is called Hampton Roads or Tidewater depending upon how long you’ve lived here)
Marine_Bio on September 22, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Friday polling is usually even worse than Sundays for the GOP — it just amused me that SUSA is asking about church attendance in a weekend poll without addressing that fact.

Don’t ugly up HotAir with blanket stereotypes and prejudices. That’s repulsive.

I was really disecting polling companies yesterday and from what I could figure Survey USA is one of the most reliable. Though I think Rasmussen is the best. Gallup surprizingly seemed to get things wrong a lot!
I still think the RCP average is the best way to go. And it still has McCain up, but there is a fairly old poll about to drop off and that might sent Virginia to Obama in the averages.
I hope the news from Rasmussen is good this afternoon on PA. Actually they are due at 6pm your time but here that is only 3.

I’m with you on this. I don’t generally talk-up or bemoan polls, but even if Palin only drew 1/2 of the 60,000 it tells me polls are not healthy.
If she actually drew something near 60,000 (even near 50 or 40) then game over, man. Game over…. for Barry.

Well, if you’re ever near Oceana, there’s one more car on the road with the bumperstickers. Also, in military housing there are lots of yard signs, but many homeowner’s associations (mine included) ban them. I’m semi-thinking about putting one in my bedroom window. Just to show my neighbors I’m not scared – even though I am.
Anna on September 22, 2008 at 3:57 PM
Even if we consider McCain to be analagous to an incumbent, there’s not that much similarity. Reagan was a well known figure- a governor who had previously run for president. His positions and accomplishments were well established, unlike Obama- who has no accomplishments and few solid, specific positions.
With no incumbent President or VP running, we really don’t have a recent election that is easily comparible.

UGHH!
I would just die if Ubama wins.
SaintOlaf on September 22, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Obama won Virginia in the primaries with a huge margin due mainly to the large turnout among the blacks. So, I say once again, it’s not imposible to have a blue Virginia this year. The more I think the more I believe that McCain has a much better chance of winning Pennsylvania than Virginia. The demographic favours him there.

Should I plan to move to an island in the Caribbean soon or what?
If Obambi wins Va, we’re done. He’ll make Bush look like Reagan, which would be damned near impossible.
Va cannot go extreme liberal. Not yet I hope.

You’ve got a point about weekend polling. Married people vote more Republican than single people, and married people with children even more so. On weekends, married adults with children are more likely with their families, away from the house (especially during the summer), while singles are more likely to be home waiting for a phone call. During a weekday evening poll, married people with children are more likely to be home, since the kids are probably doing homework.

I think the Obama camp has been very busy and pressing its advantages in organization and money. The MSM has stayed on message and prevented any stories favorable to McCain or unfavorable to Obama to emerge while taking every opportunity to cast McCain/Palin in an unfavorable light. Thats nationwide. In Virginia in particular, considering its critical importance, I can only imagine their strategy is to extend their built-in advantage in the north enough into McCain country to tip the balance. Add to that the economy and I think you’ll have your answer.
Nyog_of_the_Bog on September 22, 2008 at 4:08 PM
I live in a small New England town that’s one of the few in MA that’s mostly Republican. Most of the homes have McCain signs out front. Feels like we’re an allied outpost surrounded by the enemy.

A bare majority of women are actually opposed to abortion as a means of birth control (while a plurality support its legality overall), so womens’ views are more nuanced on the abortion issue than the media and interest groups let on.

I put out my McCain sign last week. Some guy came by walking his dog over the weekend and said he hopes they win too, and asked where to get a sign. I’m in a red county here in FL, so grain of salt of course.

DaveS-
That’s exactly right; I don’t want to see RoeVWade overturned, but I’d sure like to see it re-writen, and I’d like to see Planned Parenthood completely shut down. They’ve gone completely overboard in what they deem “appropriate”. Abortion as a means of birth control, or just in case someone changes their mind at 7+ months, is an outrage.

“Back at ya, Mr. Humorless”
Nah, I thought it was funny. Didnt mean to sound offended. Not a chance. Its cool, bro.
And I do think the VP choice will cost us the election as the economy continues to get in a mess and nobody of the four candidates knows a DAMN thing about the economy.
Roger Waters on September 22, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Thats very true. But the GOP does not understand this and by pressuring the outlow of abortion and abstinence only contraception they are not doing themselves any favour with women’s vote. But here is the catch. If they nuance their stance on abortion they risk of loosing the conservative vote. Not a very good place to be for GOP.
clemycali on September 22, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Here is what we need to do: assume the poll is true, correct and accurate and fight like it is true, correct and accurate. Get in involved in the ground game. Sign up to work the phone banks. Knock on doors. Organize events. Whether we’re really down or not is irrelevant. We have to work like we’re down and keep working like that until the contest is decided.

Glad to hear it. But that doesn’t make flenser’s stereotyping more palatable.
Slublog on September 22, 2008 at 4:28 PM
as was evidenced by McCain’s ASININE, EMBARRASSING, AND ABSURD calling for the firing of the SEC chief. That was sad and pathetic. Now, if he had somebody on his staff that knew just a tiny bit about banking and the economy, etc. he/she couldve said “uh, hey John, he had nothing to do with the mess and you are making an ass out of yourself….again.”
But, there was nobody to say that to McCain.
Roger Waters on September 22, 2008 at 4:29 PM
The only problem is that McCain keeps opening his mouth about illegal immigration….that whole pathway thing…
I plan to get a McCain/Palin sticker and just omit the McCain part…The only thing McCain has going for him, besides the whole Iraq thing, and the national security thing, and the tax thing…is that he isn’t Obama.

If RvW is overturned it will simply defer the matter back to the states. In all likelihood, all the blue states and perhaps even one or two (or more)of the red states will legislate in favor of some sort of right to abortion. But at last the matter will be decided by the people and not a 5 to 4 majority on the SCOTUS>

I remember that 2 years ago one of the dakota’s tried to make abortion illegal by a law passed by the state legislature only to be overturn by the people on the election day. I must say as a person that lived in a country where abortion was ilegal and if caught having one you went to jail, I really don’t understand the obssesion over abortion. I really can’t.
clemycali on September 22, 2008 at 4:40 PM
I think the abortion question is just a variation of the race question: there’s a certain percentage of people who feel strongly about it but will never say so in polls because they don’t want to be seen as either racists or pro-life zealots.
From these numbers the bottom line I see is that Palin has done a terrific job of preaching to the choir and turning red states even more deeply red. She’s been far less effective in purple-land and not doing squat in blue-land.
McCain’s gambit was to firm up the base AND grab a sizeable chunk of independents, if not hardcore Hillary Dems.
Only an ostrich could call that Mission Accomplished.
sanguine4 on September 22, 2008 at 4:40 PM
Ah- thought you took offense at the joke; glad you didn’t.
Would some economic street cred help the ticket? Sure. However, the current crisis was amplified by the greed of certain fat cats who fudged the numbers so they could get bigger bonuses. A VP worth over $200 million would’ve given Obama the chance to further cast McCain as “out of touch”. Even if that’s unfair, perception is sometimes reality.
Moot point, regardless. The primaries are over, the VPs selected. No point wallowing in doubt because one’s preferred candidate didn’t make the cut. I was behind Fred and strongly opposed to McCain. I can’t change the past, so going on about McCain’s shortcomings would be unproductive.
You might consider toning down the sour grapes attitude- if you really must say “I told you so”, feel free to do so after the election should McCain lose.
Hollowpoint on September 22, 2008 at 4:43 PM
It’s not nearly as good. It’s OK in sausage and the like, but it’s much gamier and not as tender as venison. It’s alright if you marinade and roast it, but venison is much, much better- especially that taken from an agricultural area where they feed on corn and soybeans like those I’ve shot.

This poll is total BS. I live in Virginia and there is no way that Obama is going to win, even with all the voters that will be voting in tribal fashion for the candidate that is “one of them” despite his socialism and even with all the liberals that have flooded Northern Virginia.
The polls are trying to keep Obama alive in the race. I’m sure they do not reflect reality.

Maybe they are but you must understand the changing demographic of Virginia and the huge increase in registred votes among the blacks. Although they apreciate teh democratic governor of Virginia and Jim Webb.
