Obama’s lie on Social Security: a cover for a retreat?

posted at 10:00 am on September 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

After last week’s market turmoil, Barack Obama tried to scare seniors in Florida by telling them that John McCain’s privatization ideas for Social Security would have left them broke.  Fact Check dismantled this attack as either completely ignorant or a total fabrication, but Slate noticed something amiss on Team Obama’s website on Social Security.  Did Obama launch a false attack to distract from a retreat on his own position?

First, the lie:

In Daytona Beach, Obama said that “if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would’ve had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week.” He referred to “elderly women” at risk of poverty, and said families would be scrambling to support “grandmothers and grandfathers.”

That’s not true. The plan proposed by President Bush and supported by McCain in 2005 would not have allowed anyone born before 1950 to invest any part of their Social Security taxes in private accounts. All current retirees would be covered by the same benefits they are now. …

In our “Scaring Seniors” article posted Sept. 19 we took apart a claim in an Obama-Biden ad that McCain somehow supported a 50 percent cut in Social Security benefits, which is simply false. Then, on Saturday Sept. 20, Sen. Barack Obama personally fed senior citizens another whopper, this one a highly distorted claim about the private Social Security accounts that McCain supports.

Obama has spent over $8 million in Florida, while McCain just started attending to the Sunshine State.  Neverthless, McCain leads Obama in Florida in all polling, and the gap has become wider, not smaller.  The lie about McCain and Social Security intends to address that gap by scaring seniors into believing that their benefits are at risk.  However, since the very beginning of the 2005 effort to partially privatize Social Security, it has always exempted people 55 and above, and some versions push that back even earlier.

For those who would participate in privatization — it’s voluntary in most proposals — a single bad week doesn’t mean the collapse of their investment, anyway.  That argument would lead one to rationally believe that the best investment is in the First National Bank of Mattress.  Over a period of years, the stock market provides a steady, stable investment and has for the last 70+ years, with a much higher rate of return than the 1% lifetime return retirees now see from Social Security payments.

But while Obama spent his time in Florida frightening old people, his webmasters made some interesting changes to his policy page.  Slate noticed it yesterday:

Barack Obama is such a hard-core wonk, his camp grinds through policy day in, day out. That may be a great quality to have in a president—but it’s not necessarily a smart strategy for a presidential candidate just weeks before an election.

And this week the Obama campaign modified his position on a sensitive issue: Social Security. Compare the current “Seniors & Social Security” page with the previous version. Now, tell me why, oh why, would the Obama campaign decide to delete the following sentence: “[Obama] does not believe it is necessary or fair to hardworking seniors to raise the retirement age.” Is he trying to stoke anxiety about his position on Social Security?

Why indeed?  That does not seem like a random act of space-saving on a cluttered website.  Is Obama about to reverse himself on Social Security and back an increase in the retirement age?  It’s one of the more substantial points of agreement among economists as a way to extend the program’s solvency, and it makes sense as Americans get healthier and have longer, more productive lives.

How would Obama go about rolling out that significant change in position?  The best way to do it while minimizing the political impact would be to paint his opponent as far worse — say, by lying about his proposals to frighten retirees and near-retirees.  This seems like a deliberate way to plow the ground so that Obama’s own shift will seem more reasonable and create less backlash among the same demographic.

That seems like a stupid change to make before an election, unless Obama has already given up on the senior citizen vote. Why not push for an age increase (which I agree with) once you’ve been elected and it can’t cost you any votes?

Heck, you could put it into CD’s and see an FDIC insured higher rate of return while injecting capital into banks. But no, let’s put it into Algore’s lockbox and eliminate any return at all. It may be ok to let liberals plan a birthday patry, but keep them faaaaar away from your retirement.

Raising the retirement age for social security is actually a good idea, which is why I am skeptical that Obama would push it.

I’m sure (if true), he only wants to shift the funding to some Obama contributor, donor or constituency.

But the retirement age should be raised, since scrapping the whole idiotic program is probably not going to happen.

Y’know I just hate that argument.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a caller on the Rush Limbaugh show or whether you’re Charles Krauthammer or whether you’re Maureen Dowd; the sentiment expressed is exactly the same: I’m smarter than everyone else and if they’d just listen to me, they’d be better off.

Well I’m not going there. Bill Clinton got elected in 1992 because George H W Bush was a horrible campaigner; because Ross Perot siphoned off a lot of votes; and because Clinton was a southern centrist governor.

And in fairness to him while he was in the main an adequate President.

But what we all need to remember is whoever it is doing the castigating of the American people as stupid, what they’re all saying is that our republic is finished, and we need to be ruled by an elite that includes them, and no one else.

Most states have locked up their ballots by then, you can’t change Biden’s name for Hillary…

After last week anyone who thinks Social Security is really secure is an idiot. This is what the government is going to do when the crunch in SS payments comes:

1) Raise payroll taxes to cover the SS shortfall.
2) Increase taxes on SS benefits so that the government gives you “your money” with one hand and takes it away with the other.

As they’re doing this, they’ll fill the airwaves with nonsense about “the rich paying their fair share” and “protecting social security for the elderly.”

Bah. The chickens are coming home to rooooost and last week’s financial crisis is merely the first in long series of hammer blows on this house of cards. (to mix several metaphors)

I would argue that Clinton was nothing but a figurehead president. He accomplished nothing without a Republican congress. He stood by and watched our enemies grow strong while he used an intern for a humidor. He quite openly and unabashedly lied to us, shaking that fishy-smelling finger in our faces while he did it.

Probably not, in its present form. Combine an Obama loss with the poor leadership Pelosi and Reid are providing in Congress, and you’ve got a lot of pissed off Democrats. While I don’t believe Republicans are going to retake the House or the Senate this year, I don’t think the Dems are going to expand their majority either. I would not be a bit surprised to see a new Speaker and Senate Majority Leader in January.

Your response is no different than O-Bambi claiming racism every time someone disagrees with him. In pointing out that no informed, sane person would vote to elect O-Bambi doesn’t mean that I’m aligning myself with some elitist “they”.

There’s a big difference between people beikng informed enough to make the right decisions in an election and being able to govern themselves. Ironically, the folks who will vote for O-Bambi will be voting for someone to tell them how to live.

By all indicators, this is supposed to be a good year for Democrats with them poised to take over the White House and expand their majorities in Congress to the point that they don’t have to rely on political traitors like McCain to thwart legislative initiatives from the right.

The reality is that there probably will be some net gain but the Democrats are not going have the banner year they thought. Pelosi is pretty safe in her job because it would take an outright revolt of Democrats to dethrone the queen but IMO Reid is toast.

Enoxo on September 22, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Obamas argument is completely bogus on ALL fronts.

Lets say we completely privitized the system for younger workers with private accounts in investment accounts.

Even if the Feds guaranteed the minimum benefits currently available in the case of stock market downturns it would still be enormously less expensive than the current program.

Freedom and private ownership is what the Democrats really have a problem with. Too bad they don’t have the guts to say it openly.

tru2tx on September 22, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Oh I doubt that. They know their numbers and the score.

I’m not at all condemning or belittling them or the site or their work. But the number of people in the US who read political blogs is pretty small. The number who post on them smaller still. And of course while it’s unfortunate it’s true that the Left has the Right beat by a good bit.

No, even though I get annoyed by Allah’s pessimism and I’d like to throttle him every time he makes a joke about the use of inhalants, my point wasn’t to demean Hotair. My point was–and is–that I hear much too often from way to many quarters from way too many people that the problem in the US is everyone who doesn’t do as they do and think as they do.

And that idea is never a good one in a free society.

I’m not entirely sure, but that probably works on the theory that the bailouts are going to add so much to the debt that the country won’t be able to afford Obama’s spending or McCain’s tax cuts.
Of course, that still works on the presumption that tax rate cuts would decrease tax revenues, rather than recognizing that a marginal tax rate cut is likely to do the opposite.

I KNOW that it is a rumor. I address that in my original post! But I offer a theory as to HOW it could happen without a hitch and why it seems possible>>>not PROBABLE.

If you READ to the bottom, I say that I don’t think it is WISE, but I don’t say it is UNLIKELY that that will be the M.O. Y’all might be right about BIDEN not dropping out, but this is winner take all to these Libs. Does ANYTHING they do surprise you?

BUT>>> since the NAGS just endorsed the OBAMA ticket>>>>>> with NO WOMAN on it, perhaps it is a red herring.

But then, there aren’t any WOMEN in the NOW anyway.

I have UPDATED MY ORIGINAL POST to reflect that news AND THE FACT THAT IT IS ESTIMATED THAT A FULL ONE THIRD OF VOTING MIGHT TAKE PLACE IN ADVANCE of November 4th.
