Video: Obama unveils bold plan for economic recovery

We’ll call it “the Patriot plan.” Content warning.

OT: Ace is teasing a big story coming out by midnight…something to do with Axelrod, a viral Palin ad and astroturfing. Hope it lives up to the hype…but I am eagerly waiting.

TexasDan on September 21, 2008 at 7:30 PM

This is intriguing: http://ace.mu.nu/archives/273925.php

Monday should be interesting. I hope Axelrod’s get something caught in the ringer. I have never seen a something caught in the ringer, but I suspect it hurts alot.

Now I knew what that old phrase meant, but I did not know who it is attributed to. Go figure, Katherine Graham at the Washington Post:

What “ringer”? An alarm clock? A doorbell? Quasimodo? Is it a reference to horseshoes?

Of course not. She meant to say, “[something] caught in the wringer,” a phrase made most famous by WashPost publisher Katherine Graham. (For all you Gen Xers, we’re talking about a hand-cranked clothes wringer that would pinch laundry dry on wash day.) But by getting all Midwest prissy and trying to craft a PG version of this vulgarism, she confused the copy editors (and possibly Kotlowitz) and gutted any meaning from it. Hell, woman, if you spend your time rousing up your neighbors because your Mexican neighbors aren’t “American” enough, saying “[something]” in a national magazine is the least of your worries.

Maxx on September 21, 2008 at 7:31 PM

Astroturfing in American English is a neologism for formal public relations campaigns in politics and advertising which seek to create the impression of being spontaneous “grassroots” behavior, hence the reference to the artificial grass, AstroTurf.

The goal of such a campaign is to disguise the efforts of a political or commercial entity as an independent public reaction to some political entity—a politician, political group, product, service or event. Astroturfers attempt to orchestrate the actions of apparently diverse and geographically distributed individuals, by both overt (“outreach”, “awareness”, etc.) and covert (disinformation) means. Astroturfing may be undertaken by an individual pushing a personal agenda or highly organized professional groups with financial backing from large corporations, non-profits, or activist organizations. Very often the efforts are conducted by political consultants who also specialize in opposition research.

“Compared to high school graduates, dropouts earn lower wages, pay less in taxes, are more likely to commit crimes, are less likely to be employed, are more likely to be on welfare and are less healthy.”

…………….. talk about a “shit” job.

aengus on September 21, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Maxx, back in ‘o4 astroturfers were called seminar callers/commenters that would start their screed with “I am a lifelong Republican/conservative but” and then reel of a list of liberal talking points that were always the same and often in the same order like they had attended a seminar on how to call conservative talk radio or comment on conservative blogs. They have become a little more creative with the formulations this year but the tactic is the same, once you understand the formula you can smell ‘em a mile away. I am interested to see what Rusty has dug up, he is a darn good internet sleuth.

IF the ad is against Palin via Axelrod and company, I have been reading in the past 3-5 days a passle load, (a large number), of stories about folks in Alaska that are ticked at Sarah. Most of them seem to be disgruntled. Thursday or Friday on some show on Fox there was a reporter interviewed that was twisting stuff as well. It has all been as if things in Alaska are not as 80% happy as we have been told. It seemed to be a shift in the normal vile attacks on Governor Palin and most of it had to do with this Troopergate malarky.

With the husbat not being employed currently; we are all for the return of shitty jobs being returned to the good ole U.S.A. LOL!

freeus on September 21, 2008 at 8:08 PM

As a real cyber dope, what I see when I think astroturfing is an orchestrated bombardment of lots of sites with the same comment, sometimes with different stated authors, that eventually creates the impression that something is soooo popular that everybody is repeating it… that it has ostensibly gone viral…as in the Obama thing about Jesus being a community organizer – which actually probably originated with just one person who “astroturfed” it. Seemed like EVERYBODY was saying it…(Think Clairol commercial, “and she told one person, and she told one person….” One minute you don’t see it, the next you see it in just about on every site’s comment section. I don’t know how it’s done, because I am a cyber idiot, but I have seen it happen and am told that the Obama campaign is expert at it. While this is my take, I’d love to know more or where I’m wrong about this. If you respond to me, keep it simple.

WisCon on September 21, 2008 at 8:08 PM

This is where McCain needs to attack, and attack, and attack. The truth is, Obama’s tax cut, is not a tax cut – it’s a tax rebate. And considering 40% of Americans do not pay income tax, it’s not quite 95% after all. More importantly, a tax rebate is an expense, it’s spending, and for those 40% – it’s a handout.

A rebate is not a tax cut. Obama’s tax plan is a lie.

ONN is right on. ONN proves that being PC contaminates the ability to effectively communicate.

If you made the same spot following the PC Bible, you would have had a emotional piece that would have caused you to open the floodgates to allow more illegals into the OUR country.

The PC message may have even made you understand the onslaught of U.S. government regulations have eliminated the need to send Americans abroad to do the same job they do today under really ‘shitty’ conditions and really really ‘shitty’ wages.
