Rush: Obama using segregationist tactics; Update & bump: AOL Hot Seat Poll

posted at 6:00 pm on September 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama miscalculated when he took Rush Limbaugh out of context for a Spanish-language ad that attempted to paint John McCain as a racist, for about the sixth time in this campaign.  Not only was the ad completely and transparently dishonest — McCain and Limbaugh are far apart on immigration policy — but it used lines from a parody about immigration policy so far out of context as to make Obama a liar.  Rush, never one to suffer fools or idiotic attacks lightly, has taken his argument to the Wall Street Journal to accuse Obama of exploiting racial tensions as a campaign tactic to get himself elected:

Mr. Obama’s campaign is now trafficking in prejudice of its own making. And in doing so, it is playing with political dynamite. What kind of potential president would let his campaign knowingly extract two incomplete, out-of-context lines from two radio parodies and build a framework of hate around them in order to exploit racial tensions? The segregationists of the 1950s and 1960s were famous for such vile fear-mongering. …

Much of the media that is uninterested in Mr. Obama’s connections to unrepentant 1970s Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright have so far gone along with the attempt to tie me to Mr. McCain. But Mr. McCain and I have not agreed on how to address illegal immigration. While I am heartened by his willingness to start by securing the borders, it is no secret that we have fundamental differences on illegal immigration.

And more to the point, these sound bites are a deception, and Mr. Obama knows it. The first sound bite was extracted from a 1993 humorous monologue poking fun at the arguments against the North American Free Trade Agreement. …

The malignant aspect of this is that Mr. Obama and his advisers know exactly what they are doing. They had to listen to both monologues or read the transcripts. They then had to pick the particular excerpts they used in order to create a commercial of distortions. Their hoped-for result is to inflame racial tensions. In doing this, Mr. Obama and his advisers have demonstrated a pernicious contempt for American society.

We’ve made much racial progress in this country. Any candidate who employs the tactics of the old segregationists is unworthy of the presidency.

Obama may have run as a post-racial candidate in the Democratic primaries, but he has shown a completely different side in the general election.  Ever since winning the nomination, Obama and his campaign surrogates (and the media) have accused Republicans of racism for their opposition to The One.  It has been a constant theme for Team Obama, even though they cannot produce a single shred of evidence in support of this smear campaign.

Rush finally states what the national media has been too cowardly to report: that Obama has a strategy to inject race into this campaign in order to silence criticism, and that he’s willing to lie to do it.  It hasn’t been exactly a secret, as the long list of links above will show.  He uses language in the general election that he never dared used in the primaries, about not looking like other presidents on the currency, having a “funny name”, or in some cases explicitly referring to the color of his skin — and accusing Republicans and the McCain campaign of a “campaign of fear” based on it.  (The irony, of course, is that the Hillary Clinton campaign actually did do something along these lines by releasing the picture of Obama wearing traditional tribal dress on a visit to Africa, a point that no one bothers to mention now.)

The national media just got done clucking their tongues and wagging their fingers at McCain over an ad they claimed was a lie, when in fact it turned out to be true.  Not once in this entire campaign have the media taken Obama to task for his strategy of lying to stoke racial tensions in this campaign.  Only blogs at ABC and the Washington Post have even raised the question, while the AP or the Miami Herald busily buries the evidence of it through editing tricks.  If Rush makes this a national story, perhaps the media will finally take stock in which campaign has run the dirtiest attacks — a smear campaign worthy of Joe McCarthy.

Update and bump, 9/21: This is today’s AOL Hot Seat Poll question:

Even before this got posted here at Hot Air, 60% of respondents from AOL agreed that Obama is deliberately using accusations of racism to silence his critics.

I can see Pastor Barak Wright losing this election and being the Man Bear Pig of racial issues.

Other than his dumb comment about Donovan McNabb, I’ve never heard Limbaugh say anything remotely bigoted about any demographic group, exceot maybe liberals. ;-0

I’m no Rush fan, but his McNabb comment was accurate, if impolitic.

fossten, a picture is worth ten thousand words.

“…The daughters of Rosalyn Carter and Hillary Clinton endured the rigors of puberty sheltered from the press.–8:55 AM

From the press perhaps…

Obama’s daughters are not feasted upon as little sluts by the press, nor seen as such by conservatives.

But the Left (whether MSM, Blogs, bloggers, community organizers, activists, Obama supporters, et.al.) CAN’T stop themselves from preying on conservative family children. That cruelty is thorough, as the Left knows not how to apologize, either. The Left is without remorse for its torture of innocence, for its thieving innocence from children. Suffer your own condemnation in the hell you made for others whom you would destroy in order to level the playing field to the lowest.

Barack Obama: Affirmative Action We Can Believe In

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 19, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Does anybody else, who have not particularly considered themselves racist in the past, find the Obama campaign turning them into racists?

Talk about diminishing returns for a gambit and unintended consequences.

Yoop on September 19, 2008 at 8:40 AM

You’re right on, but unfortunately you will find that these are exactly the intended consequences. Obama’s allegiances are to himself and himself only. He is willing and able to set back race relations in this country more than half a century, as long as it coincides with his own advancement. And if it doesn’t, it doesn’t matter, he has at least made people angry.

Anger is what sparks revolution. This is why he wants people to “get in faces”. All that said, there is no race or people he will not betray.

Limbaugh’s comment about McNabb was pointed toward the sports media’s love-affair with, at the time, a mediocre quarterback.

Limbaugh later said that he would have made the same statement about media’s love-affair with any other mediocre quaterback

The cowards at ESPN overreacted in firing Limbaugh which was yet another demonsration of the media’s ‘white guilt’ complex.

Is anything Rush ever said as bad as what Joe Biden said about Obama being clean and articulate in the primaries, or what he said about Indian people running 7-11 stores? How about him asking the disabled guy in a wheelchair to stand up?

It’s so great to know that Rush Limbaugh gets under the skin of hard-leftists. Isn’t that right J_Gocht, Rywall?

He drives them mental because they can’t take him off the stage. Just like Bill Clinton used to drive conservatives nuts in the 90s, and they couldn’t remove him from office.

But here’s the part that makes a lib’s head explode: Bill Clinton has to be kept out of the public eye because, like Carter, he deteriorates and becomes more vile with age; meanwhile Rush continues to build a track record of excellence after 20 years!

jeff_from_mpls on September 19, 2008 at 10:37 AM

“White Guilt” is what the Oslime-a campaign is counting on.

I’d like to see an ad addressing this situation. I would have to be done very carefully and probably by an outside group.
It could use MLK’s “I have a dream” speech to support the idea that Oslime-a must be critiqued and criticized just to prove that he is an equal and that the idea that criticism is actually racism is counter to the tenets of the civil rights movement. Oslime-a should denounce all attempts to inject racism into the campaign when legitimate criticism is presented.

If we go by your liberal-moronic logic, any argument that disproves or goes against what you believe can be twisted around to say it’s racist and we’re all expected to back away. We’ve caved to weaklings and lightweights like you, with your pathetic whining about racism when there is no racism for far too long.

And the fact that you responded with just one more weak, fluffy string of drool is an admission that you are wrong.

Tell you what: listen to Rush today (the full show) and pop in here to let me know when I should be shocked. Pull back that veil of nuance for me that I’m incapable of seeing myself.

If Rush makes this a national story,

Rush,
I know you said yesterday, at the suggestion of a caller to counter these ads, that, you don’t want to insult the Hispanics by running a TV ad in Spanish.

And I agree on that point, but, what I believe you’re missing here, is the opportunity to keep Barry, the drive bys, and liberals in general, on the perpetual defensive here.

And I know, this might require an extra serving of liver, milk and fish, but swallowing hard here could really pay off, especially when Barry will have to waste more money and energy on countering your ads.

This is just a suggestion from little old me here:

The ad would start with you, introducing yourself, speaking in Spanish similar to Obama, – showing video of you speaking – and then counter Barry’s smear with the truth, with another speaker in Spanish, (very similar to Barry’s)…

..And then, very important here, end the ad with.. (you speaking in English): “For more information go to Rush Limbaugh.com”

..then have a web page headline, in obvious display on the main page, that explains your position on immigration in more detail in English.

..and I would highlight it all, in easy to understand, straight forward bullet points (for example):

– remind them that the point of your immigration policy parody, was to point out a country’s right to have their own laws regarding immigration…

..because otherwise, what’s the point of having a country?

Remind them that the best schools in Mexico – that graduate the most highly skilled students who become eligible for full U.S. college scholarships – are those schools in which the classes are only taught in English.

What we must realize is that with the international headline grabbing aspect of Obama’s antics, this smear ad by Barry will get free play in Spanish speaking countries.
And, when you run your ad in the same channels, it forces the issue of examination and therefore more publicity for you and more spinning by Obama and the liberals.

But, as I said, this might require a steady diet of liver, milk and fish.

Which brings up the question, does Allen Brothers sell liver, milk and fish?
..if not, then may I suggest you take up fishing?

If baiting hooks and cleaning fish is to messy for you, you could always hire a “fishing caddy”.

Rush, please let me remind you, that you have tremendous influence here.

Please take advantage of it, or else, I might have to strike>negotiate<strike rig a pay cut for you.

“Sara, er, Palin, uh, wears lipstick, um, because, she’s um, er, ah, is still a pig.”

Absolutely guarenteed to be as genuine as Rush’s quote.

Links, proof, J_Gotha, !!! Most of us have been listening to Mr. Limbaugh (for whom you couldn’t carry jock-strappage) for years and never hear him say anything close to what you assert. And even if he did, there is no equivalent in any thing he’s ever said, to the kind of sentence after sentence, hour after hour personal attacks on conservatives from Air America. Randi Rhodes (hic) is a non-stop vile, venomous and completely sophmoric hack. Why don’t liberals protest her? Same reason they didn’t protest Russia in Georgia. There are foul-mouthed pundits and world power despots they actually like.

hawkdriver on September 19, 2008 at 11:30 AM

…Now the gloves are off!

Having grown up in Detroit MI during the 60s and early 70s, and subsequently watching the relentless disintegration of that once-great city under majority black control, I can tell you with certitude that there is NO WAY IN HELL I would EVER vote for a black for ANY OFFICE until I had established beyond question that he was the second coming of Thomas Sowell or Clarence Thomas!! Even most putative “black conservatives” would abandon any pretext of being conservative to advance their racial agenda. The Constitution would become a dead letter.

The people of this country had better wake up before November! I can assert from direct experience that there is no more racially bigoted people in this country than the blacks. That practically 95% of the black community will vote for an avowed America-hating, Moslem-collaborating, radical Marxist simply because he is (half-)black is all the evidence any sane person would need to recognize this fact.

The Black Moslem movement began with Elijah Muhammad in Detroit in the 1930s. The “Black Liberation Theology” spewed by Wright and others of Obama’s colleagues is a poison that will destroy this country, as it has poisoned Detroit, Washington D.C., Chicago, and other once-great cities now made virtually uninhabitable. We do not need any creature anything like Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, Malcom X, or Louis Farahkan as president of the United States. Elevating a monster like B. Hussein Obama to the office of the presidency would mark the end of America as we have come to know it.

BHOs Ivy-league, elitist, useful idiots, like Streisand, Gates, Buffet, and Soros, are ignorant beyond measure if they continue to align themselves with this Trojan Horse. These people are blind as bats to the true nature of BHO and his minions. All the money in the world will not shield them from the absolute disaster sure to happen if they put BHO in a position of power. We will all witness the Detroitification of America, in short order. In my mind, this is beyond question!

And if this makes me racist to say all this, then fine, I’m a racist.

The Obama team appears to believe race is their Ace in the hole. As election day draws nearer they will continue to ramp it up in deep coordination with the press. Obama hopes to to make it the top reason to vote against McCain.
The Obama race attack will be a 3-prong approach:
-McCain (and Palin) are racists.
-Republicans are racists.
-People that don’t vote for Obama are racists.

Speakup on September 19, 2008 at 11:25 AM

The Democrats have become more sophisticated in their subjugation of blacks. The have progressed from real hangings to technical hangings such as Thomas, Rice, Powell, and Cosby.

Blacks are now members of a new plantation called the Democrat party that keeps them in line by promising them M.O.N.E.Y., which has caused blacks to turn a blind eye to what the Democrats did to them before and after being emancipated, and what they are doing to them now.

Today, with blacks, MONEY trumps reality.

I am delighted to learn, by listening to Rush today, that Limbaugh is running a Spanish-Language ad to counter this smear.

Mutnodjmet on September 19, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Obama’s ad trying to link McCain and Rush on illegal immigration and accusing them of racism was foolish, but it is consistent with a campaign that underestimates the electorate, their opponents, conservatives, and moderates. All he has succeeded in doing is bring Rush and his vast listening audience more firmly into the McCain camp while simultaneously losing any plausible deniability about race-baiting.

Even if I didn’t disagree with Obama on virtually every issue of importance to me, I would conclude that he is not competent enough to be President. Biden is no better.

He really should have picked Hillary. She’s awful, but at least she seems like an adult.

Y-not on September 19, 2008 at 12:29 PM

The innuendo and veiled nuance he uses on almost a daily basis is litterly shocking.

J_Gocht on September 19, 2008 at 10:35 AM

C’mon Gocht. Nuance was last week’s liberal buzzword. This week’s is comprehensive. (I thought you listened to Rush.)

Get with the program or you’ll be under the bus.

Hmmm… ya think it’s a coordinated attack? naaaa… couldn’t be. I mean we’re talking about the post-partisan, post-racial, Lighworker, right? It not like he’s ever played the race card…much… errr.. nevermind.

Damiano on September 19, 2008 at 12:54 PM

What Obama and his ilk do not understand is that “white” America is tired of being called racists. After literally bending over backwards accepting these daily insults from the black community, these false insults. We get sick and tired of being labeled racists, by the race mongers.
Jessie Jackson, Sharpton and others made a very nice living off these lies…now it is time to call them out.
The most revered person in Hollywood is black, Oprah has more “white” fans then black, sports fans embraced Dr. J, then Magic, then Jordan…
For 40 years we have watched the leaders of the inner city schools, all liberals, destroy those schools. We (conservatives) were never allowed to assist because we were “racists” for wanting the inner city schools to be successful, to produce educated children. Instead, they decided that a 60% drop out rate is better then having goals and standards.
Who are the racists? the liberals who have endeavored to keep their people uneducated, pregnant, unemployed…my heart bleeds for the minorities that have been swept up in the racist hysteria, and at the same time be swept away as being useless…except for their vote.
And now we have the ultimate in racists, losing ground to an Alaskan Governor, he needs to lash out with his racist tirade…news to you, we have been called that for decades, while your friends have destroyed a culture…we aren’t falling for it anymore, we are standing up and calling you the racists, and all of America knows it and our strength and determination of not being labeled this disgusting lie will lay at upon you on your defeat…you should try to win on issues, not on being a faux victim.

Right_of_Attila on September 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM

right2bright on September 19, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I am as outraged as you are, but the problem is people are buying into this disgusting nonsense.

Look at the polls, look at any media outlet with the exception of Fox, look at the Governors, Representatives, Senators, etc.

This is why I have gone from disgust to unprecedented outrage with the media. NO ONE is calling anyone out on this. You will only find it on right wing blogs.

This election will be decided by “undecided” and independent voters who are being bombarded 24/7 from every media sources with allegation of racism, sexist and dismissive comments about Palin and a complete lack of any balance, facts or otherwise. All the corrupt and downright repulsive crap that Obama has been involved with for his entire life goes entirely unreported. He is permitted to lie about his relationships, crooked deals and voting record with impunity. The media simply parrots whatever he says and berates anyone who says otherwise, without even a cursory attempt to fact check anything.

This has gone from bad to a crisis. IMO the issue with the media and this election is far more dangerous than the current economic situation. Americans will always figure out a way to make money. Yeah, some people will get hurt in the process and that sucks. But the fact remains that the ONLY people doing anything about it are Bush and Paulson while Reid and Pelosi moan “No one knows what to do” and try to pass sham bills for nothing but political appeasement.

What do we have to do? Start raving in the streets and firebombing buildings like the left wing nuts? Hell with it, if anyone is with me I’m ready to go to CNN and start with their buildings.

Damiano on September 19, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Akzed on September 19, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Obama has found himself in an actual competetive election. After losing his first race in Illinois, Obama continued his political career by ELIMINATING HIS OPPOSITION. He challenged his opponents on their petitions for nomination and was successful in having them taken off the ballot and won his first Illinois election unopposed. He won his senate seat by having sealed court records made public (divorce proceedings of his opponent) who subsequently dropped out of the election. Obama was able to secure the presidential nomination by strong-arming voters in the non-secret voting caucuses and securing the super delegate votes. He did NOT WIN the majority of votes from the primaries. National elections are harder to manipulate in that they are a composite of local precincts, states, and electoral votes, making it very difficult to predict where the ballots need to be stuffed (and how many ‘deceased’ votes are needed). This was the real story behind the 2000 presidential election. Now Obama is in a real election and he has no policy, no programs, no solutions. All he can do is throw accusations like racism around and lie about McCain lying. Same tactic used against Bush.

jerseyman on September 19, 2008 at 2:18 PM

That’s right. I’M A BRAT. Obama is not a brat.

Brat on September 19, 2008 at 8:30 AM

As I understand, the original meaning of “brat” was gender specific, so, no, Barak Obama is not a brat.

Count to 10 on September 19, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Hasn’t anyone noticed that Rush is too smart to be a racist? I don’t mean he’s too smart to reveal his racism, I mean through your own experience you should see even the smartest racists out there (such as David Duke, William Pierce of “Turner Diaries”, Farrakhan) come across as quite stupid. Let me tell you why. It’s because racism is stupid. If you have any believe in Truth and falsehood, light and dark, good and evil, and if you believe racism is false, then why would any intelligent person believe it. Racism has to tie any intelligent mind in knots, because it’s false. We seek truth diligently. Imagine if we had to bow down to some racism god everytime we ponder what is true and what is not. It’s crazy. Intelligent people don’t live their lives that way. Stupid people make thing they do, but that doesn’t make it so. More likely, smart people prey on others’ stupidity to get them to believe intelligent people can be racist. Anyway, Rush as a racist is absurd. It’s impossible.

Dear God in Heaven, please say it ain’t so!

I don’t know about this specific alleged racial remark, but I do know that Rush’s speech has been affected since his hearing loss. Some of his words are not enunciated as clearly as they were before his hearing loss. I’m sure someone listening to Rush who was hoping to hear something “racist” could find fodder for their argument.

Now count to 10 and wait for the blasts about Rush’s drug habit again.

I would rather they choose Hillary, it would show their internal polls show they are losing or are going to lose big time.
The fact that they are not making any of these desperate moves (besides the personal attacks) shows they feel pretty comfortable about the direction.
