Palinmania: 60,000 turn out for event in Florida?

Exhibit A in the case of why even I can’t get too depressed about that anti-Palin focus group in Florida the ’sphere was buzzing about yesterday. Granted, the event was held in a GOP stronghold; granted, Team Maverick’s crowd estimates have been “problematic” in the past, although this one comes from a fire chief on the scene, not the campaign; granted, 60,000 is probably a high-end figure, with another fire official and several reporters who were there pegging it as closer to 25,000. Even so, per the last link, consider this: As a sitting president, Dubya only managed to pull 15,000 when he showed up four years ago.
The Villages, a vast, upscale planned community north of Orlando, has about 70,000 mostly adult residents — many of them military retirees — who vote reliably Republican in statewide races. Tens of thousands inched along roads into the picturesque town square of the complex, where they stood in sweltering heat for about four hours as local GOP officials and a country band revved up the crowd.
“Sa-Rah! Sa-Rah!” they chanted at every mention of her name, applauding loudly and waiving tiny American flags that were distributed — along with free water bottles — by local volunteers. The fire chief estimated the crowd at 60,000.
Admiring throngs mobbed the Palin family’s arrival and departure, snapping souvenir pictures. Autograph seekers thrust campaign signs, caps with the McCain-Palin logo and copies of magazines with her face on their covers, and the Palins responded warmly.
Biden’s largest crowd among four stops in Florida earlier this month? 2,000. The excitement’s not over yet, either. Next up to be stricken with a scorching case of Palinmania? Bono. Click the image to watch.

Bono cut Bush slack because he was very impressed with the work Bush has done with regard to AIDS in Africa, a pet program of his. He actually spoke kindly of W and spoke openly that W should be given credit for his efforts…. A true liberal more like Moynihan than Reid, Pelosi & Co.
I know exactly what you mean. Today, I went fishing offshore and caught some nice grouper… I do that regularly… year round. My poor abandoned wife had to suffer by going and playing golf with friends… she does that year round. BTW, we are both still employed full time. I guess when we retire, we will have to suffer that boredom more frequently.

that’s ok. Drudge has it front and center. That’s worth at least 3 major TV news mentions IMO.
Obama draws a crowd of 80,000 for a speech of a life time. Palin draws 60,000 for a noraml everyday speech..

I was at this event!! It was fantastic except for the fact that people were fainting from the hours in the 90+ degree open sun. The impromptu theme was “Sweating for Sarah”.
As far as crowd estimates, I know beforehand they were expecting 20,000-30,000. WOW
I was lucky enough to be VIP because of volunteer work with the party, so I was very close to the stage. Governor Palin is absolutely gorgeous in person, more beautiful even than she is on film.
I was so fortunate to have this opportunity. I posted some of the pics on my myspace page:

I’m thrilled to see such insightful analysis of what she said on this site… Sorry, wrong site. Much like Obama supporters, folks here seem to only care about how many people she drew rather than what she said.
The Democrats have their image candidate, and now the Republicans have theirs. Both Palin and Obama have serious shortcomings in terms of military and foreign policy experience, not to mention a lack of a systematic political philosophy, view of the role of government, state vs. federal responsibilities, etc. But hey, who needs these things when you’ve got loyal voters, right?
You said it all. Thanks for making my point. Many who still care about the Constitution, public policy and political philosophy, don’t care that Gov. Palin is a woman, has a pregnant daughter, is a “hockey mom” who wears lipstick, or has a fisherman husband. First off, I don’t vote for image candidates. Second, Palin had more power to do good as a governor, but instead is allowing McCain to use her to get elected. And people wonder why I’m voting for someone else besides the Republican or Democrat nominee. Republicans voted for the “lesser of two evils” last time and we see what we got (Dubai ports, Harriet Myers, bailout galore, almost amnesty, lost Congress, etc.) McCain will fail if elected. Why? Well, there’s amnesty (which will be an irreversible change for our country), his previous tastes for judges (Ginsburg, Breyer), his support of Global Warming garbage, etc. Then he and Republicans will get all the blame and will lose the White House in 2012 and more seats in Congress in 2010 and 2012. But hey, go ahead and vote for the guy. I promise not to say, “I told you so.” I’ll be right there with you trying to stop McCain from enacting many of his poor policy ideas.

Amazing these dumbass 0Bomber supporters are stuck on wailing about her lack of experience especially in the area of foreign policy when it is obvious to any but a third grader she is more qualified as the Vice Pres. candidate than 0Bomber is as the pres. and our Pres. candidate is the most qualified of any.

Palin is the Governor of Alaska with an approval rating of over 80% and a solid record of reform. She is not a trophy candidate. And as for amnesty, look who McCain is running against. McCain is not Tancredo, but apparently the American people did not want Tancredo.

ManlyRash on September 21, 2008 at 10:33 PM
Wrong Terrye, Obama as the first multi-racial candidate for high office generates excitement too. It’s just a different kind of excitement since there is nothing in the candidate to back it up (akin to Feraro’s nomination). Crusty old bastard, whether by intent or outcome, has picked a running mate who energizes the parts of the base willing to stay home because they hate McCain and all that he has done this past decade.
I’m part of that group. McCain is a liberal Democrat who managed to secure the GOP nomination by procedural trickery instead of being the guy the party really supports. I don’t trust the man because of his legislative record and had he picked a like-minded traitor like Huckabee, I would have stayed home despite the fact I vote in a “battleground state.” Gender aside, putting Palin on the ticket adds youth and the real conservative/evangelical values that McCain has consistently voted against and has rejected over this past decade. The fact that a gender breaking candidate is part of the mix just adds to the excitement.
Like it or not, many of us are reallhy voting for Palin and willing tto put up with the fact that means electing a political Judas like McCain into the presidency.

What are you talking about? Why are you comparing Obama and Palin? They aren’t running for the same office. I supose you are one of those who keep forgetting that Bush is term limited and can’t run again.
Your arguements all argue in favor of McCain because he is not either Obama or Palin.
McCain deserves respect because he proved he knows what Republicans want by picking Palin. McCain listens and responds. By the time she’s been VP for 4-8 years foreign policy will be her strength. It’s all good.

That seems to be a bit of a stretch. By that line of thinking, Republicans want amnesty, campaign finance reform, closure of Guantanamo, an open debate on how bad America tortures war captives. . . etc.
McCain does not make a move that isn’t calculated to get him elected. He moved to the district where he could be elected to the House fairly easily. He then used that time to build a base for a senate run. In the senate, he gamed the states he needed to game to win the election. . . New Hampshire and South Carolina. He came in 5th in Iowa (or just ahead of Rudy).
ThackerAgency on September 21, 2008 at 10:47 PM
No.
Her positions? Again, what is her stance on illegal immigration? Border security? How to fight/win the GWOT? Our foreign policy? Her thoughts on how/when to use diplomatic, information, military, and economic means to defeat our enemies? Her views on state vs. federal roles? Purpose for taxation? Social security? Entitlements? Whether the Constitution is a “living” document beyond the ability for Congress to amend it? Should I continue?
The only things she’s spoken about with authority concerns energy policies, how Wall Street is to blame for current economic troubles, that she and McCain are “mavericks/reformers”, and that McCain showed real leadership by saying to some protesters that folks should stop yelling at each other.
McCain, Biden, and Obama are from a Congress with an approval rating in the teens. McCain has a record of acting like a Democrat. Why should I vote for him/them?
Opinions vary. For someone who is such a mystery in terms of the the items I’ve listed above, she sure does have quite the following. Much like how we didn’t really know what Obama believed for so long (and still don’t in some cases), but hey, they can both deliver a speech very well.
Again, another reason I’m not voting for either of these folks.
Such a shame. I liked Duncan Hunter myself. Bobby Jindal will have my vote in 2012.
Gotta love the primary system. He wasn’t on the ballot by the time they got to my state. All that were left were Romney, Paul, and McCain for the Republicans. McCain is the reason we need a preferential voting system, but I digress.

She sent her National Guard to help build the border fence. She vetoed a ton of stuff, she’s a fiscal con. Social conservative stuff? She’s lived it. Foreign policy: she say retreat in Iraq is unacceptable. She’s already talked about radical Islam so I know she gets the big issue and her son volunteered to serve (that doesn’t happen in a vacuum). She has a foreign policy that is centered first on economics, namely the 700 large we send overseas for oil. She wants NATO to expand to secure the ability for freedom to expand. I don’t know what you want to know about “purpose for taxation” or SS and on entitlements she already said we could trim ‘em.
I don’t agree. She has some great interviews you should be able to dig up on cspan. She’s an impressive person, I like her positions.
Spirit of 1776 on September 21, 2008 at 10:56 PM
There’s a complete moron who posts here as a “wise man” that from the very beginning demanded we all vote for McCain, no questions or criticism allowed. He/she/it still doesn’t get the significance of the Palin nomination in securing the GOP base that would never have voted for a political traitor like McCain if he was the star of the ticket. That McCain and Palin are campaigning together far more than usual shows that McCain’s staff understands that he’s hated by many of the party faithful.
McCain needs Palin to get Republicans out there doing the grass roots work beyond pressing a lever on a particular day in November. She’s adding the personality and values that McCain doesn’t deliver. Obama’s message of hope revolves around electing an inexperienced multi-racial empty suit. McCain’s message of hope revolves around the electorate ignoring McCain’s pathetic liberal agenda and voting for Palin in the name of reform (which also helps McCain hide his love affair with liberal Democrats when the party needed them to support the party).
highhopes on September 21, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Yeah… the problem with watching every video of every stump speech that Palin does is that you become very familiar with the jokes and the phrases. Yes, all pols do this because they are talking with a different crowd every time and they are directing their speech at that crowd, not a televised audience.
Think about this: when was the last time that we got linked to every single stump speech that a candidate did? It’s unprecedented.
I’m glad she was able to get the kids to Disney. I’ll bet not too many Alaskan kids get to do that.

Consider that Palin is the backup quarterback, considering her qualifications is more than warranted here. Neither of them are qualified for the job. Why should I vote for them? It’s not like either job is one for OJT.
Um, no. Bush can serve two terms or 10 years. I was merely making the point that Bush was also a “lesser of two evils” candidate and that didn’t turn out so well.
No. McCain was actually 2nd to last on my list. McCain-Feingold, amnesty, previous confirmations votes to the SOTUS, his Global Warming rhetoric, the Gang of 14, etc. lost me.
He gets my respect in that he knows how to work the political system (to be expected of a guy who’s spent the last 25+ years in Congress).
Think of this statement when he enacts amnesty.
First, getting classified briefings doesn’t qualify anyone for anything. Second, the office of the Vice Presidency is not the place to get on-the-job-training. The last time I checked, the ad in the paper for Vice Presidency said, “experience required.” Third, the last I checked, the Vice President presides over the Senate, not the State Department. Fourth, thank you for admitting she has no experience in this area. I’m glad someone does.

RightWinged on September 21, 2008 at 11:04 PM
This view completely misses the point. We aren’t turning her into anything. She is. And people love it. That’s like complaining that people like the taste of ice cream and we should put vinegar in it to make it less enjoyable.
Since when it drawing a crowd bad? You have to have people hear your message. The problem for Obama is that there is no there there. The problem with Palin isn’t that there is not there there, it’s just that people want her to say something other then McCain’s positions. But she running on the lower half of the ticket, that’s her job.

Ron Paul has ZERO chance of winning. The same with any other third party candidate you could name in this election. The only way that a third party candidate will have a shot is if they have a ton of name recognition and money, like Ross Perot.
Now don’t get me wrong, I have very little use for either major party. They have betrayed all of us in their lust for power. But we need to make a more coherent strategy for a third party than just slamming the Republicans and Democrats if it is ever to work.
A successful third party will have to run a candidate that is incredibly charismatic and can communicate with the American people on terms they can relate to. Then they will have to get enough money to get them face time. The Internet helps, but it is not yet the answer. Maybe in ten or twenty years it can be if it is not regulated by Washington too much.
Until that time we must work to limit the damage that is done to our country. We must vote for candidates that will not try to regulate political discourse (read as The Fairness Doctrine for now). We must keep America from being bankrupted by overspending and irresponsible business practices. We must avoid federalizing things as an answer and find a way to make private industry more responsible while remaining private.
The last time we had a third party candidate for President that was charismatic and electable I voted for him (Ross Perot). What I managed to accomplish was to help Bill Clinton get elected. I do not feel that Bill Clinton was the worst President (rather average actually). But I feel Obama will do great harm to this country.
I feel it is critical that the first black President in this country is NOT elected by racially divisive politics. If Obama becomes President it will validate this kind of divide and conquer mentality for a large number of black Americans. They will see that the way to success and power is to ply hatred and fear. That would be a tragedy that will set race relations in this country back for many decades and the personal cost to the American people that will come from it will be enormous.

A PUMA tells the OBOTs where they can go. Caution, this is funny.

At 1:30 it was 97 (saw the reading on a big digital thermometer on a building in Wildwood on the drive in). That was probably close to the high for the day, maybe a degree or two less.
There were quite a few people treated for heat/sunstroke/dehydration. There was plenty of water available but not much shade. I don’t think the organizers were quite prepared for the turnout.

I can imagine. I probably would have passed out myself. But then right now 65 is warm for me.. since I never had a summer.
I feel for the people there.

That was very entertaining. I wonder how many of them there are.

Gov. Sarah Palin may not have met foreign heads of state… but she certainly is causing foreign heads of state heads to explode with Palinmania!
Enoxo on September 21, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Spirit of 1776, she’s got a few out, but none as good as this one.
Godzilla on September 21, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant how many like-minded Hillary supporters, especially in key states.
Spirit of 1776 on September 21, 2008 at 11:30 PM

The thing is that caucus fraud and intimidation was rampant in the primaries…especially with how the delegates were apportioned. At the convention, the DNC didn’t go by the procedureal rules. They simply selected Obama. The PUMAs are very very pissed off and very very anti-0bama.
Godzilla on September 21, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Did she need to have a free rock concert to get that many like Obama?
CrazyFool on September 21, 2008 at 11:38 PM
OK libs say what you will but Sarah is the real deal and most of the american people know it!!
thmcbb on September 21, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Nope. I believe we have the best system in the world. I just wish people would vote on principle, using sound reasoning rather than emotions.
How so? Don’t tell me, show me (not you, her.)
Argumentum ad populum.
I don’t think other people have been keeping a secret from me. I’m merely saying that she hasn’t elaborated on any of the issues I’ve listed. That is all. I can’t speak as to the reasoning of why she hasn’t done so.
