2012: Are you ready for McCain versus Palin?

The thought hadn’t occurred to me but as soon as I saw the headline I knew where they were going with it. The ‘Cuda has two great (and related) political gifts acknowledged even by her big media detractors: A knack for the populist gesture and an unusual deftness in triangulating between Democrats and Republicans. Together with her bio they form the three pillars of her ordinary gal/outsider persona. If McCain wins, she’ll be VP of a country not normally inclined to give the same party more than two terms in the White House, let alone the four the GOP would need if she were to succeed McCain as an heir apparent.

What’s an ambitious maverick to do then? Hmmmmmm.

Savvy readers [of her biography] might find cause for concern in Palin’s burning ambition, her ruthlessness or her complete lack of loyalty to political patrons. One sensible reason for Sen. Barack Obama’s not choosing rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate was the real worry that she would undermine and run against him. Palin has already done that to her patrons — twice…

Palin was encouraged to run for a City Council seat in Wasilla, Alaska, in 1992 by council member Nick Carney and was warmly welcomed into office by then-Mayor John Stein. Within months of taking office, she had voted against a pay hike for Stein and against a mandatory garbage collection ordinance that would have greatly enriched Carney. Four years later, Palin unseated Stein…

The scandals Palin helped prod along [while an appointee of Gov. Frank Murkowski's administration] badly damaged the Murkowski administration. She ran against the governor in the 2006 GOP primary, easily finishing him off.

Palin had her reasons but the pattern is clear. She is invited in by well-established pols, doesn’t get her way and ends up running against the “good old boys” and defeating them handily. Would she do the same against McCain four years from now if he decides to run for reelection?

The base already loves her more than it ever has or ever will love McCain, and the center-left would thrill to her wandering off the reservation with some sort of truth-to-power shtick about how her conscience will no longer allow her to support McCain policy X, Y, or Z. They already disagree about one major issue where she’s on the right side of public opinion and he isn’t; there’s another one, even bigger than ANWR, out there for the taking if she’ll only seize it. Mix in a little Huckabee-style economic populism and she’d be the insurgent New Republican, the Change candidate, running not as a fourth term of the old GOP but as a first term of the new one. Exit question: Just the wild musings of a blogger who lives for political drama, or can we get a little Palinmania excitement going for this idea? Probably just a pipe dream given how the GOP establishment has always frowned upon disloyalty within the party. Remember the last time a sitting Republican president was challenged by someone on his own side? Whatever happened to that guy anyway?

The way I see it, Sarah can hold off the press who loves her not as they continue to say mean things about her.

She continues the stumps and town halls. She does one or two more softball interviews then during the debate, when you least expect it, she turns into… Sarah Barracuda the Obama/Biden slayer!

CliffHanger on September 20, 2008 at 5:01 PM

OK, I can play both sides here. Biden is almost certainly going to win that debate, because he plays dirty. He could potentially self-destruct in a gaffe-fest too, but the VP debate isn’t really going to effect the election (though it will get high ratings). With all the lousy econic news, this will come down to Obama and McCain themselves.

Wharever works, I always say.

Palin/Jindal 2012!

Akzed on September 20, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Wait a minute, I thought McCain was supposed to die of cancer on January 21, 2009. Isn’t that why we are supposed to be so afraid of Sarah Palin?

Thats not entirely true. Lefties just think he will die of something by February at the latest. Doesn’t matter to them if it is cancer, heatstroke, old age, stubbing his toe,a cold, or whatever. They aren’t picky.

Picture this. Biden plays dirty. Sarah remains poised and, with that wry smile, cheerfully throws a few zingers his way, winning the admiration of more women. She demonstrates real knowledge of the issues and gives thoughtful responses throughout the debate, allowing Independents to feel a bit more comfortable with her.

So yes, I can envision a scenario where she is able to lift the ticket by at least a couple of points.

Of course, it could go the other way too but I doubt it. I want to believe…

If Obama is elected, I plan to reorganize my finances to get into Yen/Euro denominated investments. The US Dollar will probably still continue its slide over the next generation. – Sapwolf on September 20, 2008 at 3:19 PM

If Obama is elected, the United States as we now know it will no longer exist when the generation born in the year of his ascendency reaches voting age.

No fricken way would I EVER vote for either Palin or McCain now or in 2012! Palin is Huckabeen in female form: Not the decent person she appears to be. From a post I wrote last night:

petunia, ROTFLMAO! But we’re Republicans!!! Oh, it’s that “moral majority” party you’re talking about!

I’m guessing then that Palin’s daughter’s stud, Levi, is NOT A REPUB!!! Do you know what language he used on one of his MySpace pages before taking it down???!!! Have a look at this NYP story, Ms. Republican! This is rich. The hypocrisy here is hysterical!!! BTW, I am not a Dem.

Says Levi:

“I’m a f – - -in’ redneck” who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes.
“But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- – - and just f – - -in’ chillin’ I guess.”
“Ya f – - – with me I’ll kick [your] a**,” he added.
He also claims to be “in a relationship,” but states, “I don’t want kids.”

Great family values here!!! Guess Palin was too busy with her career to keep an eye on what type of friends her kids were hanging with! How hard would it have been to check out her daughter’s stud’s MySpace stuff???!!!

Maybe she didn’t need to—maybe Levi talks all the time like that so Palin already new he was a bada**. Are not these kinds of boys the types that pressure girls to give it up? Didn’t Palin learn anything when she got knocked up before marriage?! Based on this, one would think she’d be EXTRA CAREFUL ABOUT WHOM HER DAUGHTER WAS DATING! GUESS NOT!

Oh, and one more thing about those Repub values. Polar queen is allowing Levi to display a photo of her in a teeny tiny SHORT skirt and with her blouse almost completely unbuttoned on another of his MySpace pages!

What an example of modesty she is showing her daughters. NOT! Palin and you “I’m a Republician” types are giving the Dems so much fodder to use against you, it’s fricken absurd!

Independents like myself are sickened by the scene in this video, which Palin strongly supports:

Helloooooo, should you not be asking Palin that question???!!!

Not that it matters, but Yes I am a Christian.

Shelby = dem troll

SaintOlaf on September 20, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Ban Shelby please. I have nothing against dissent, but bringing up a 17 year old’s dating behavior is out of bounds and more of a Dim scumbag tactic. I’m sure Shelby monitors his/her kids with ankle bracelets.

Speedwagon82 on September 20, 2008 at 6:52 PM

How about we worry about 2008 first? This was/is already a painfully long election cycle, so how about we calm the hell down on 2012? Sheesh.

Tom Blogical on September 20, 2008 at 6:53 PM

It doesn’t matter. And you aren’t a Christian, though you do a bad impression of what you think a Christian is.

ManlyRash on September 20, 2008 at 7:40 PM

While I don’t particularly care for Shelby’s form, I find it somewhat pitiful that so many dismiss him as a “troll” rather than refuting his arguments. I must ask, are the ad hominem (e.g. personal) attacks stemming from a laziness on the parts of so many here to actually refute ideas counter to their own, or is it because they’re not smart enough to do so?
In terms of the subject at hand, I remember two things that stuck out to me during Greta Van Susteren’s mini-documentary about Palin: (1) Palin’s tshirt that said, “I may be broke, but I’m not flat chested”, and (2) a conversation between Gov. Palin and her husband one evening in the kitchen that went like this, “So, have you heard from Bristol this evening?” “No, I haven’t seen nor heard from her at all.” My wife and I looked at each other thinking the same thing, “Hmmm, yeah, there’s a recipe for trouble.”
So, I ask, if one can’t manage their own home, how can we trust them with an office such as, say, the Vice Presidency? Is this an unreasonable question?

Actually, Frodo, I have it on good authority (Gandalf the Grey told me) that when Obama puts on the Ring of Power, I mean swears the oath of office, all of us poor GOP hobbits will be put to the sword..and darkness will fall and anarchy will reign. There won’t be any more little hobbits…they’ll be fodder for the fighting Urukai…

Seriously, could you not be so annoyingly melodramatic..or at least huff a little less paint thinner before you post.
