It’s on: McCain camp hints they’re ready to hit Obama on Wright

Via the Standard, I’m simply weak at the thought of the magnificent theatrical sorrow to which we’ll be treated when the blogosphere’s shrillest Obama mega-shills find out. If Joe Klein and Sullivan don’t already have pieces prepared for the occasion, consider their weekend schedules cleared.
Remember, The One himself calls this a “legitimate issue.”
Don’t be shocked if you see the McCain campaign pull the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright out of mothballs in new attacks against one-time parishioner, Barack Obama.
McCain advisers say that they see “attack by association” as fair game now, arguing that Obama’s campaign has been using that technique to go after McCain. In particular, the Obama campaign has hammered McCain on the stump and in TV ads on the number of one-time lobbyists working for his campaign. (The McCain campaign is also angry about a Spanish-language TV ad that ties McCain to Rush Limbaugh on immigration, without ever saying that McCain took on Limbaugh and others to fight for comprehensive immigration reform.)
“They played it one way, we played it another way,” said one of McCain’s top advisers, Mark Salter. “Now we’re both going to play it the same way.”…
Salter said to expect more of the same, saying the campaign was tired of “catching the spears.” Asked whether to expect attacks involved Wright, campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb said: “We’ve seen all throughout the (Democratic) primary this guy has a lot of associations that are very problematic.”
By “catching the spears” I take it he means Team Barry’s proliferating negative ads, bad-faith accusations of racism, mass mobilization efforts to shout down or otherwise “get in the faces” of people who utter the slightest criticism, and thinly veiled ridicule of McCain’s VP as a moron to whom people are drawn because she’s “cute.” But maybe I’m wrong. Exit question: How does six weeks of guilt-by-association one-upsmanship sound? Wright, then Hagee, then Ayers, then Palin’s church, then …?

I think they should run ads stressing the idea that Barack Alinsky spent almost 20 years at that church and then juxtapose the rants. I also think it would be cool if they could use the O’Reilly interview with Obama when O’Reilly reminded Obama that the DVD’s of the rants were on sale in the foyer of the church. Obama replied: “What can I say?”

It won’t hurt him, considering that the media whores won’t do this job themselves with nearly the energy they are putting into Trooper Gate. Tied in the polls against a complete loser like Obampo, might as well roll the dice.

Smells like desperation to me.
I guess most of the voting public won’t be overly familiar with the old thing, or have forgotten. But I don’t remember it exactly hurting Obama when it broke originally.
The excuses are premade. Obama is no longer a member of the church, etc.
But it’s a nice addition to the other associates he has.
I think Rezko is more of a bomb than Wright is.
Unless McCain has something new to add.

ROFLMAO… well played.
Seriously, this highlights a point- McCain waited too long to play the Wright card and this is the wrong time to do it. We’ve just gotten to the end of Racism Week and the public, media and surrogates are already primed for more racism attacks.
Playing this card now is playing from a weak position. He should have hit him on this prior to the convention along with a dig lump of experience attacks, then named Palin.
McCain’s failed to respond to the Obama vs. Palin experience attacks and now that opportunity is lost, more or less.
Playing the Wright card now is walking into a trap.

I think someone should tell Allah that they do not scream God DAMN America in the Assembly of God church.
Terrye on September 19, 2008 at 9:38 PM
IMHO, it’s a little too early to bring out ads about Ayers/Wright/Resko, etc. Right now, the MESSIAH and Biden have become an inexhaustible supply of “sound bites” which McCain is using in his videos and doing so to devastating effect. The 5 ads which McCain/Palin put out today alone, should keep Obama reeling into the middle of next week – although McCain needs to keep them coming in a never ending deluge.
Right now, Ayers/Wright & Co. ads look as though they could be put on ‘hold’ until after the 1st debate – then bury Obama with them.
As someone wrote earlier: By the time McCain’s done with THE ONE, and if anyone has any question as to whether or not Obama is capable of making “good choices”, be it choosing advisers, pastors, friends, business partners (or Vice Presidents for that matter), the American public will forced to conclude that clown is utterly incapable of even choosing a pair of socks.
alwyr on September 19, 2008 at 9:39 PM
Where is that quote from?
—————–
There is a difference between negative campaigning and getting the facts into the sunlight. McCain must do the 2nd – if this election is a referendum on Obama, McCain wins.
Spirit of 1776 on September 19, 2008 at 9:40 PM
In fact Palin left the Assembly of God church in 2002 and went to some nondenominational church after that. Barack Obama on the other hand stayed just as long as he could. I guess he felt comfortable there. That was the kind of church he wanted his children to grow up in. The kind of church that teaches children that the US government invented AIDS to kill black people. Yep, that is so post racial.
Terrye on September 19, 2008 at 9:40 PM
I wouldn’t pull the trigger on Wright yet. Or maybe they will SURPRISE us with Ayers stuff in October. Or…maybe there’s something else. What do they know and when did they know it?

I’ve reread the McCain camps quote– they didn’t confirm or deny Wright, but if they are smart they’ll hammer Ayers. Can’t get any racist tags there, and Obama launched his political career out of Bill Ayers’ house– seriously, that’s where his first fundraiser was. This is one golden egg of a commericial waiting to be hatched, esp. with Obama’s “judgement to lead” meme.

McCain has a chance to link Obama to the current financial crisis. That’s what he should be concentrating on. Levin did the heavy lifting for him tonight. If McCain can link Obama and his inner circle to this mess, Game Over.
boko fittleworth on September 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM
Maybe there’s a humorously satirical way of putting all of Obama’s personal history and significant personal associations together on a carnival carousel. Portray them as the criminal slime they are, laughing all the way to the bank with our tax dollars, destroying America, ridiculing America, hating America. “In your exact words” works best via playback.
I suppose there are those see/hear/say no evil unaware of current events members of the public who will need a “documentary” fashioned ad.
Alternate styles and DON’T OMIT ANY OF OBAMA’S STRING OF HORRIBLE “BEST FRIENDS FOREVER” OUT OF THE PICTURE. Equal rights.

This should be interesting.
I suspect most of the “undecided” voters will be hearing about some of this stuff for the first time.
There’s also a voice in the back of my head that says that the McCain Campaign is thinking two steps ahead — it’s not just about getting the Wright association out there, but about pulling Obama off balance in some way for the debate that’s six days away…
Can’t wait to see how the week unfolds.
ClintACK on September 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM
Actually I don’t remember that, thanks for reminding me.
At this point, it’s an economic election. I’m not sure how people are going to respond to mccain attacking Obama like this, in light of the turn of events this week.
In light of the housing crisis, I think Rezko is far more effective, anyways. Sweetheart loans to politicians never look good.
I’m not going to be a fan of this tactic, but I understand why it needs to be done. If you are gonna do this, may as well chuck in michelle saying she’s never been proud of america as well.
McCain feels the need to make ads for all these people; then, I suppose in the last 2 week of the election make a summary ad to remind everyone of all the problems with Obama in one very forceful ad – and show that Obama has a pattern of this.

Rezko is just a crook. Clinton was surrounded by crooks and it didn’t rub off, Buddhist temple donations et al.
Every pol is surrounded by crooks like flies buzzing around honey. Unless they are indicted they are ok.
But Rev. Wright is a hot button issue I hear all the time. He rabidly hates white middle class America and that is a threat. Obama saying he quit the church, without denouncing Wright keeps it a hot button issue
Wright made enough tapes to keep that reality cooking forever.
Nothing like being compared to a cockroach that must be stamped out to perk up the ears. I believe middle class America should take seriously Wright’s view of them, because Obama made homage to these rants for 20 years
entagor on September 19, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that was an independent ad (as in, not tied to the McCain campaign– no I’m John McCain and I approve this message” after it)?
Pasalubong on September 19, 2008 at 9:52 PM
Yup. It drove me nuts that they were hammering her on the church thing in the first place. There was nothing to discuss there, so they simply made it up (see Gibson)
The whole deal smacked of vendetta for the Wright thing. That would have been the time to bring out Wright, not now. Now it smells of desperation and clouds the opportunity to lay the smackdown on Obama’s incompetence and inaction on the economy.
This week alone:
Dems:
- Reid- “No one knows what to do”
- Obama- Present. I will get back to you with my plan once the Feds get through with theirs (aka- if it works, I will say, “I always said… Bush/ McCain should have done it before…” If it doesn’t work, I will blame Bush/ McCain.)
vs.
- Bush- Calls in the economy troops. Hammers out deals around the clock since Sunday
- McCain- called this whole thing 2 years ago, wrote the bill to fix it and was blocked. Unveils a comprehensive plan for going forward today.

Drive it home and make it concrete as to Obama’s lack of judgment. Obama was so enamored by Rev. Wright that he named one of his books after one of the Rev.’s sermons; Audacity of Hope.
And Obama stuck by Wright at first. It wasn’t until Rev. Wright started slamming Obama that O decided to throw ‘em under the old bus.
Perhaps the ad could show how Obama called Wright one of his biggest heroes in his book yet at Saddleback, Obama did not cite him. It shows how shallow Obama’s judgment and convictions are.

Anywho…remember when Dems called Reagan the “Teflon President” because no mud ever seemed to stick to him? Reagan ain’t got nuthin’ on Obama.
You could unearth a picture of him smoking dope with Charles Manson while killing puppies and the media would just ignore it. This won’t work for McCain.
flipflop on September 19, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Speaking of the debate, I’m beginning to wonder if the reason we haven’t heard any solutions coming out of the Obama camp on the economy is because they know the question is going to come up at the debate and they want to blind-side McCain with a list of new policy recommendations during the debate; roll of a laundry list of prescriptions and then pitch a question to McCain. Since McCain will be hearing them for the first time, he won’t be able to say much about them and it’s all a ploy to make McCain look weak on the economy.
Back to the ad for a minute, wasn’t there a McCain ad earlier that started with Obama’s “just words?” speech and then flashed to Wright, more Obama, then on to Pfleger and back to Obama again closing with the announcer saying something like, “Well Sen. Obama. Are they just words?” Or was that a dream I had about a possible McCain ad?

Black liberation theology is in conflict with Biblical Christianity, and is more akin to the mutterings of Muhammed than the teachings of Christ.
