Wonderful: Under pressure from the left, organizers disinvite Palin from anti-Iran rally

She was willing to go but the Democrats didn’t want to share a spotlight with her. So rather than let her attend and use her presence to drum up attention for the cause they’re ostensibly there to advance, the left muscled the organizers into canceling all politicians’ invites.
The Obama campaign in turn offered to send Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida to the event, but the appearance that the non-partisan group was aligning with the Republican ticket put the group and its president, Malcolm Hoenlein, under heavy pressure from Jewish Democrats, including members of the conference, members of Congress, and the liberal group J Street, not to give Palin a platform, sources said. Hoenlein told the McCain campaign that he would have to rescind Palin’s invitation or cancel the rally.
The organizers, I’m told, have formally disinvited all elected and political officials, but the move was about Palin.
Don’t blame Hoenlein. He can’t afford to alienate those groups and he absolutely shouldn’t cancel the rally in protest. Lay this at Obama’s feet. John Batchelor, who’s pals with Hoenlein, hints heavily in this post from this morning that Hillary was ready to go until The One leaned on her to skip it. Over to McCain for his reply:
“Throughout my political career, I have sought to rise above partisanship on critical national issues. Nowhere is this more true than on important matters of national security. Earlier this year, Senator Clinton, Senator Obama and I issued a joint statement on the genocide in Darfur and pledged to support efforts to bring it to an end. Earlier this month, Senator Obama and I put the campaign aside to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country and talk about the importance of national service.
“Next Monday, the day before Iranian President Ahmadinejad is to speak before the United Nations General Assembly, several organizations will sponsor an event to draw attention to the importance of halting Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear weapons. Governor Palin and I share a strong belief that a nuclear armed Iran poses a grave threat to the security of Americans and to our allies. Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. The risk that Iran would provide terrorists with a nuclear weapon is too great for the world to ignore. Iranian President Ahmadinejad has denied the Holocaust occurred and called Israel a ’stinking corpse.’ A nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the entire region. Preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons should be a shared goal of every American, not another occasion for partisan posturing.
“Governor Palin was pleased to accept an invitation to address this rally and show her resolve on this grave national security issue, regrettably that invitation has since been withdrawn under pressure from Democratic partisans. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Republicans, Democrats and independents alike to oppose Ahmadinejad’s goal of a nuclear armed Iran. Senator Obama’s campaign had the opportunity to join us. Senator Obama chose politics rather than the national interest.“
Indeed, although given that the extent of his commitment to stopping Iran from getting the bomb remains an open question, that’s really not a rally he or his lackeys belong at. As for McCain and Palin, they should show up anyway. Don’t ask to address the crowd, as it’ll only put Hoenlein on the spot and distract from the mission of the event. Just swing by for a few minutes to show support for the cause. Let the public draw its own conclusions. Exit question: Does the name “Robert Wexler” ring a bell, incidentally? If you doubt whether Obama was flipping the bird to McCain by choosing him as a possible surrogate to attend the rally, refresh your memory.
Update: Lame:
Hillary Clinton, who cancelled her scheduled appearance at the event after learning of Palin’s plans to attend, had been confirmed months earlier. But Palin’s participation made the non-profit groups planning the event concerned they would lose their tax-exempt status, if only one party’s presidential or vice presidential candiate was invited to speak.
“The IRS is very clear, Hillary Clinton does not equal Sarah Palin,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “You have to have equal representation of candidates.”
How is it a violation of their tax-exempt status if they’ve invited Democrats to be there? I suspect you’ll find the list of speakers at Planned Parenthood events mighty thin on Republicans and their tax exemption’s not at risk, needless to say.

These people are a disgrace to the human race. I don’t recall anything like this since Communist front groups used to hijack protests against the rise of fascism. They didn’t care about fascism, they were just trying to promote their own political agenda. Same here.

Can Osama Obama actually surprise anyone any longer?
The longer this campaign has run, the more he has behaved like a whining, spoiled child who has no regard for civility or truth.
The worst part, of course, is that he is getting away with it. Considering the silence of his accomplices in the MSM, there is still too much of a chance that this petty child will be elected.
MrScribbler on September 18, 2008 at 7:12 PM
Petty. This goes to show you just how petty and banal Obama can be. Think of all the crap Bush has taken and yet he has always been a gentleman. Not this guy. It is all about him.

Damiano’s right brain says: It was stupid to invite Palin/ Hillary in the first place. No one gave a damn about the rally. All anyone could talk about was Hillary and Palin. It was the right thing to do to rescind the invitations, even though it’s completely classless.
Damiano’s left brain says: These people are spineless, hypocritical two-faced pieces of crap. I applaud McCain for calling Obama out on this.
Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 7:16 PM
I disagree. Sarah palin does not need to waste time with an organization that is either spineless or partisan or both. The point is made, both she and Senator McCain have expressed their solidarity with and support for Israel.
HawaiiLwyr on September 18, 2008 at 7:17 PM
That’s crap, “months ago” Hillary was a Democratic candidate for president. Far from being non-political it would have been a campaign stop, even if she is the Senator from New York.

What is so bad about this is that Palin is a huge supporter of Jews and Israel as governor of Alaska. If I’m not mistaken, she has the flag of Israel in her office doesn’t she? And, the Jews in Alaska like her too. I’ve seen a couple of photos of her at a synagogue.

I was thinking the same thing. If there was ever a protest thats needed to be held, this is it. Both parties should zealously engage in this opportunity to shout the madman Ahmadinejad down. It’s not the Republican’s fault that Obama wants to play politics at this crucial moment when America could be showing unity in our utter contempt for Ahmadinejad.

the 501c3 is not jeopardized by having people of diverse political parties speaking as long as they do not espouse their particular party. In this election cycle, all ‘politically correct’ bulls**it needs to be cast aside. If there is any blame to assign in this farce, then it should fall squarely upon the Jewish community which ostensibly arranged this demonstration.
The Jewish community should at least have the wherewithal to find the collective balls to say: “This is our event, and we more than welcome anybody and everybody who is willing to attend, so he/she can give voice to his/her condemnation of Iran.” But no, they bow to these clowns who are intent upon politicizing everything.
It never ceases to amaze me. For 60 years (i.e. since the very foundation of Israel) Republicans have shown themselves prepared to go ‘the last mile’ in support of Jews and the State of Israel, yet Jews insist on voting for Democrats who display nothing but contempt for them.
Sure does make for an interesting psychological analysis, if nothing else.

This is taken from the IRS website. It’s a document that provides 21 specific examples of situations which may or may not be violations of the tax exempt status.
This one seems to be pertinent to the present discussion:
Both VP candidates were invited to the same event where they would have been given the same opportunity to speak. Based on that, their tax-exempt status is not at risk. There was another scenario that covered one candidate accepting an invite when another refuses. The IRS doc said that since the group mentioned the other candidate was invited and did not endorse one or the other candidate, it was not considered political activity.
It’s pretty clear from the IRS website that simply inviting Sarah Palin to address the event did not threaten the groups tax-exempt status at all. It took me about 20 minutes to find that information….seems like someone at the group could have done the same.
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/rr2007-41.pdf The interesting stuff is on page 3.

Great. Big rally organized by Hoenlein to intimidate Iran, when he can’t even stand up to two-bit politicians in this country. So a bunch of rich Jewish donors will have a feel-good rally, and Ahmadinejad will laugh in their faces.
Hoenlein has, unfortunately, just lost his credibility with a great many of his co-religionists, based on my observations. A friend of mine is looking forward to attending one of his upcoming speeches purely for the purpose of mocking him. It takes a lifetime to build a reputation, and only moments to destroy it.
The phrase “party over country” fits Wexler and his ilk like a glove. Party over the US, and certainly over Israel.

This was the plan all along. Get Hillary to drop out so the organizers would force Gov Palin off the list. I would to there just to shout out at the Speakers there, We Want Sarah, We Want Sarah (or Palin). The organizers by ostensibly claiming not to politicize the cause by allowing Gov Palin to speak because Hillary and Obama had a hissy fit, have now thoroughly undermined their cause by their politicization of it. For shame Organizers.

I get the sense that a plurality if not a majority of Jewish Americans wish Israel would just go away. Jews are probably the most pro-Socialist/Communist group in America. As so-called Progressive opinioned has become increasingly anti-Semitic under the guise of “anti-Zionism” Jews have felt increasingly isolated from mainstream socialism. As long as Israel exists they believe that the conditions of exile will get worse.
Like the “raus mit us” Jewish community leaders in the early days of Nazi Germany, the Jewish leadership believes prostrating themselves in front of anti-Semites will save the community from harm. Jews in America today are even more naive (some would day stupid) then German community in 1933. When Iran destroys Israel under an Obama administration they will become more anti-Semitic not less. Obama and his communist friends understand that as long as there are Jews to write about it History will record Obama’s role in the second Holocaust. They will not let that happen.
To get biblical today’s Jewish community is no different then the Israel of the books of Kings. Instead of worshiping the Ba’al they worship at the temple of Marx. Both lead to death and destruction

I have been married to a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn for 20 years and it has taken me about 18 of those to finally convince her family that Dems are not the party that supports them. That the Dems will support whomever furthers their agenda. One of the main reasons goes back 2000yrs. Liberals are “GODLESS”. Why the Jewish people in this country can’t see that is because the are Social Liberals. They stay in their own little communities here in FL and only invite Dems to come and campaign there. The older Jews take the dems words and never question why, whatever they say, never helps them in any way. I finally got through to them by showing that their Dem leaders (SanFran Nan, etc.) will do anything to regain their power, like overstepping their bounds & visiting Syria etc. Some of the older Jews think they know everything!! When Jewish politicians run as Dems, it just doesn’t make sense!! Long live Israel & the USA!!! Mahmood should be arrested as soon as he sets foot on American soil…FDR would have done it, JFK too!! Our leaders are all spineless fools to let that asshat anywhere near the UN he refuses to recognise or obey!!

Upinak: I have read the relevant section(s) of 501(c) 3 as they pertain to loss of tax-exempt status for political activities: As you correctly point out here is the type of activity which is prohibited:
1. Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.
2. On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.
Question – Do you consider scenario # 1 above to be applicable; if so, how so? Same questions for scenario #2
