Video: The obligatory “Josh Howard sneers at the national anthem” clip

posted at 11:05 am on September 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

Two clips for you, the first a local news report in which fans show their “appreciation” and the second the raw footage. Click the image to watch. Not the first multimillionaire to show contempt for his country, needless to say, and not even the first time he himself has snubbed it: He declined a chance to play on the Olympic team two years ago because it interfered with his summer camps. Expect him to be booed for maybe five games, and then as his PPG inches up towards 20, bygones will quickly be bygones.

Exit quotation invitation: Josh, meet Kobe.

Blowback

Disgraceful.

The worst thing about this is O’Reilly’s “Pinheads and Patriots” segment popped into my head first. I really hate myself.

Pasalubong on September 18, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Screw the idiot . . . he’s not worth wasting your breath on.

rplat on September 18, 2008 at 11:08 AM

I like the report from WXII-Channel 12 (linked at the bottom of the entry), in which Black American military veteran Larry Jones tells Josh Howard where to go.

Debbie Schlussel on September 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Makes sense. He does play for a team owned by Mark Cuban.

Don’t question his patriotism narcissism.

Oh, I don’t.

Tengripundit on September 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM

So, because you’re black, you don’t celebrate your freedom? Were you born a slave? No, you were born free in a free country that FOUGHT and lost hundreds of thousands of it’s young men to assure you that freedom. If you hate it here so much, then go live in Sudan and see what happens to you there.

Drug bust or rape charges? Which one will occur first?

Fletch54 on September 18, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Let’s see the Mavs cancel his multi-million dollar contract and ship him off to Zimbabwe to see if he could find anything to celebrate there.

Ungrateful piece of garbage.

The Reverend Wright’s view of America permeates the black middle and upper classes. This may sound controversial but I will say it anyway — In my opinion significantly larger segments of african americans are more anti-white (and anti american) than whites are anti-black.

titus_pullo on September 18, 2008 at 11:16 AM

This guy is one of the dumbest athletes in America. He tells the media about how he and a lot of other NBA players smoke weed all the time…or, as my mother-in-law calls it, smokes “the pots”. Two months later, he gets caught drag racing in North Carolina, and he generally says incredibly stupid stuff. Go Spurs!

O/T: Marine Corp Hero Does NOT Get Medal of Honor.

Rafeal Peralta was wounded in a house fight in Falluja and was down, an insurgent threw a grenade into a room full of Marines, Peralta grabbed the grenade and covered it with his body, saving the lives of his fellow Marines. (You can read about him in the book “Home of the Brave” by Casper Weinberger). This man used his last bit of stregnth and energy and his last seconds on Earth to save the lives of his buddies. He deserves the MoH. To deny him is a horrible injustice.

Tony737 on September 18, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Howard has always been a total jack*ss.

Some of the comments here are disgraceful.

Dave Rywall on September 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM

No matter his unearned millions, he clings to his phony “victim-in-da-hood”. How touching.

Personally, I couldn’t possibly care less what this illiterate, amoral jackass “thinks” about anything. In a few years, he’ll either be dead, living under a bridge or in jail. Like his homies.

One of the things I love about my county is that it repulses idiot Obama supporters like this.

Might as well go interview the strays down at the dog pound. The average intelligence down there beats Howard’s.

God help me if Jason Terry shows up doing something this stupid. I hate, hate, hate that the Mavs have been tarnished first with losing the big ones, then with Mark Cuban’s stupidity, and now this. ::sigh::

A$$holes like this are a big reason I do not follow professional sports.

Bubba Redneck on September 18, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Open up any dictionary and look up the word MORON.

Josh Howard’s picture will most likely be next to the definition.

pilamaye on September 18, 2008 at 11:24 AM

And yet, he will claim racism when he is received poorly for his actions. We are all accountable for what we say and do. What sets the liberals apart from the adults is that we adults know that there are consequences for our actions.

Liberals feel that it is their right (I would never say God given right when talking about a liberal) to say and do as they please, and yet still have others bow down before their awesomeness. He is entitled to his opinion, but his opinion does have a cost. This is a concept the libs don’t seem to understand at all. Must be that entitlement mentality of theirs.

Tommy_G on September 18, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Connie on September 18, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Do you think the fans will make this guy or his team or the owner pay for his attitude/remarks? Nope, fans will still go to the games, chow down on over-priced franks, wash it down with over-priced beer, buy over-priced team jerseys and hats and mugs and other team cr*p. Oh, wait, right, they might “boo” him, yikes! The best part is that 90% of the people who do all the stuff I just mentioned that pays for this guy’s salary are white.

This is why I don’t give a hoot for any sports. These players and teams could dissappear from the face of the earth tomorrow and I wouldn’t even notice or care.

Tony737 on September 18, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Ya know, punks are just punks. Allen Iverson grew up in one of the nastiest ghetto environments possible, but he is a patriot who loves America and gives back when he can. Plenty of athletes come from mean circumstances but understand the tremendous blessing they have of living in this country where they can achieve such fame and wealth simply by playing a game they love. This punk doesn’t. Screw him.

One good thing about the Zero’s run for POTUS is that it’s bringing about long overdue discussions. Obama wanted a discussion about “race”. He’s getting one, but it isn’t the one he expected.

We’ll see what happens when he loses the election. A lot of people are tired of the acceptance of “victimhood”, double standards, whining and the constant insistence that we continue to indulge grievances, inow, keep paying up.

Many of my friends sat during the black anthem, refusing to honor it. However, I stood up. I can understand why someone would not respect the black anthem–after all, it was the first time we heard it and it is not the National Anthem! I cannot understand why a “professional” athlete does not honor our National Anthem. Does he also burn flags?

The Dallas Mavericks — Anti-America’s Team.

Along with the above linked story, the Dallas Morning News also has Kevin Sherrington’s column today outlining how Howard has basically been a one-man wrecking crew on the Mavericks’ image over the past year, and helped get Avery Johnson canned as the team’s coach with his uncaring attitude during the playoffs this past April.

The latest brouhaha would simply be an incident involving another self-centered athlete not giving a damn abot the National Anthem … if it wasn’t for Mark Cuban’s alliances with Hollywood’s biggest raving moonbats. Trying to play down Howard’s latest faux-pas comes across as not only an owner trying to protect his player, but after all the grief Josh has caused the team, as an owner who might be protecting his player because he doesn’t see anything really wrong with what Howard said.

Be afraid, Chicago Cubs fans hoping Mark Cuban buys your team. Be very afraid (though if he does, it might answer the question, “How well can Jeremiah Wright sing ‘Take Me Out To the Ballgame’ during the 7th inning stretch?”).
