Video: McCain’s and Palin’s first joint town hall
posted at 3:00 pm on September 18, 2008 by Allahpundit
I was curious to see it so I figure you’re curious to see it. The clip picks up with a PUMA showing her love and runs for eight minutes, with the question about her perceived lack of foreign-policy knowledge and her ensuing invitation to the crowd to play “stump the candidate” coming at around seven minutes in. (If you can’t get enough, there’s a 37-minute version at CBS.) Like I predicted on the day she was announced, part of the media’s effort to yokel her up will involve knockin’ the G’s off her gerunds when transcribin’ her statements. Geraghty caught the Post doing it; here’s CNN doing the same thing. Think the crowds care how she speaks?
Maybe they do. See Nate Silver’s poll analysis today at TNR as to whether Palin’s momentarily more of a liability to the ticket than an asset. Silver comes from the left but plays things down the middle, although I grant it’d be easier for me to make that argument if he wasn’t including the Daily Kos tracking poll (Research 2000) in his analysis. Still, even ignoring the data from that one, her net favorables are now lower than any of the other three candidates on the tickets as averaged. I can’t believe we’d be doing better with Romney or Pawlenty, but there’s no doubt in the wake of Palinmania that our fate is riding on her performance in a way it wouldn’t have with either of them. Exit quotation: “As Democrats learned with Obama this summer, the more interest there is in one candidate, the more the election comes to serve as a referendum on that candidate.”
Update: Actually, would we be doing better with Romney in light of the market downturn? He very clearly understands what he’s talking about on economic matters, a quality we could use right now, but whether a guy worth $300 million is the right messenger is another question.
Update: Some good news from Pew: Palin’s favorables among independents split 60/27. The only caveat is that the poll was taken Sept. 9-14, which is before the recent downturn in her ratings.

The only problem (for Palin) that I see is that McCain Camp has her overly scripted. Every onter word out of her mouth is “McCain this, McCain that, Maverick, Reform,”
If they would just let her be herself she would be fine. Frankly we love her because of who she is and don’t need or want it covered up. Let her make some mistakes. Fans won’t care and media will never accept her no matter how good she does.

Same place that Obama’s surge off his “great speech” went too. Obama had a freaking 8 pt lead after his convention. If the market wouldn’t have had a hissy fit McCain would still be up. It is a shame that with the Market losing 10% Obama can do no better than tie. He is an empty suit, a socialist and thinks paying more taxes for his stupid ideas is showing a love for your country.
Idiots wait till your taxes go up. child tax credit gone, savings credit gone. that’s $500 per child gone,
Your an an idiot. Palin’s surge is showing on the campaign trail. All her events are sold out. Obama needs a telpromter PAlin answers questions from the voters. Which is the stupid one again?

Roger, I know you have been here for a long time and I respect your opinion. You very well could be right.
However, the negativity/pessimism is not attractive. It is as offensive as body odor.
This election is far from over. The debates have not even started. McCain should kick Barack pretty well in those three debates. Palin will do well against Biden. We can count on at least a gaffe per day from the Obama campaign.
Obama is way too liberal to get elected in this country. Have faith.

Take heart, capitalism does that for us, it just takes a while. The NYT and LAT etc., readership is shrinking, the network news is scrambling for viewers and the Rush Limbaugh’s and Dennis Praeger’s of the world are doing just fine.

The race is essentially tied…with an unpopular GOP President, an unpopular war, a sagging economy, etc. What does it say about the Messiah that he can’t pull away, Palinmania notwithstanding? He should be ahead by at least 8-10 points and not real close in the electoral college count, either. THAT is why trolls like an_abstraction have slithered out from under their rocks. Obama can’t close the deal, just like in the Dem primaries when Hillary was winning states even after he had it pretty sewn up. I like McCain’s chances at this point given all that is weighing on his candidacy…there’s a lot of time left, and a few tracking polls recently aren’t going to change the fact he is still in a pretty good position.

I don’t give a crap which one sold more, it says nothing about artistic merit. But it does figure a whiner like you would prefer The Wall, which Gilmour accurately characterized as Water’s album whining about “you f’d me up this way, and you f’d me up that way.”
Bottom line is, you made the claim that RW wrote all of their songs, and explicitly stated that he wrote all of Dark Side of the Moon – a claim that was easily refuted by a quick Google search.
Since you said that one should’t talk when they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about, then right about now would be a good time for you to stfu.

Is this conversation really going to continue?
Pink Floyd was a decent band, but their time has passed. These days when kids get high, they listen to Radiohead instead.
And the words to those songs kinda suck anyway. “Teacher, leave those kids alone.” Seriously? It’s no Shakespeare, and it’s certainly not why people listened to them.
Esthier on September 18, 2008 at 4:16 PM
unseen at 3:50 Same with my family and a lot of my friends. But there’s a subculture in America that hasn’t one ounce of critical reasoning ability. They need a 30-second dose of just how putrid the people they trust for news really are. We need to get that across to them so when they hear the crap that passes for news they will automatically think, like the rest of us, “Well, maybe that’s true but probably not.”
My 7th-grade son was appalled when his social studies teacher at the beginning of the year spoke to the kids about “credible” news sources and listed CNN.
I told him he should ask his teacher if he was aware that CNN was bribed by Saddam Hussein precisely because people would think his propaganda more credible if it came from CNN. IOW, CNN is considered credible even though it has been and continues to be the propaganda arm for America’s enemies. It’s the credibility given to them by the unthinking masses that makes them dangerous to this nation and world.
This is way off-topic, but last night my kids and I watched a DVD about WWII that I got at Wal-mart for a dollar. It gave an overview of how the Axis Powers hardened their own nations for war while simultaneously softening their targets. My boys were intrigued by this “softening” part – transplanting Nazi radicals into a society to camouflage their treason as being the real pulse of the people.
I spent the whole night shaking my head and saying, “Some things never change.”
It was actually really eerie, especially in the context of what my kids and I already know about Obama and who he’s aligned himself with globally and in this nation.

The fact is that relatively few people actually pronounce those G’s in an “ing” ending as a typical “G” sound (either hard like “geronimo” or soft like “gumbo”).
The ‘mainstream’ US accent uses a velar nasal sound which is a nasal made with your tongue in roughly the same place it would be if you were going to make a g sound. Palin is replacing it with a dental nasal which is your garden variety n sound.
What does this mean? Nothing more than that different people from different places speak differently. Though, I find it interesting that what most people think is ‘missing’ that makes her sound different (having a ‘g’ at the end) is actually missing from the speech of most Americans.
JadeNYU on September 18, 2008 at 4:16 PM
Do we really want a nation of welfare queens? do we really want to have to support every last one of the do nothing populastion that don’t want to get an education, that don’t want to work?
Liberalism is a failed policy.
welfare begets more welfare, lack of work effort gets more lazy people. Already almost 50% of the population doesn’t pay taxes, what happens when the rest of the 50% no longer as enough to pay for the welfare. Socialisnm is a grand bargian to the poor house for everyone.

My point, 13, was that DG never wrote a single song by himself.
RW had all the concepts and wrote all of the biggest songs by himself (words and music).
Dark Side is as much RW’s as is The Wall. His concept, the best songs (Money, Brain Damage, Eclipse) are ALL his (words and music) and NO songs (except some noise or some instrumental piece) is there without a RW co-write.
You didnt respond to my point about the Pink Fraud albums. I will take that as an admission about my being correct and your surrendur.
