Report: Feds zeroing in on Palin e-mail hacker; Update: Suspect’s father denies he’s been contacted

posted at 5:37 pm on September 18, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Exercise caution, as it’s a serious charge and there’s no proof of guilt yet.

But let’s just say that if it pans out, we’ll be playing the ultimate round of “Name That Party!”

The son of state Rep. Mike Kernell has been contacted by authorities in connection with a probe into the hacking of personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Kernell told The Tennessean.

Kernell, a Memphis Democrat, said his 20-year-old son David had been contacted by authorities investigating the hacking of Palin’s personal e-mail account, the newspaper reported on its Web site this afternoon.

Jim Hoft notes that one of the boss’s commenters was pointing in this direction last night. Here’s what “rubico” had to say about his motive, per MM’s reproduction of his comment in yesterday’s post:

I read though the emails… ALL OF THEM… before I posted, and what I concluded was anticlimactic, there was nothing there, nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped, all I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor…. And pictures of her family

I then started a topic on /b/, peeps asked for pics or gtfo and I obliged, then it started to get big

Earlier it was just some prank to me, I really wanted to get something incriminating which I was sure there would be, just like all of you anon out there that you think there was some missed opportunity of glory, well there WAS NOTHING, I read everything, every little blackberry confirmation… all the pictures, and there was nothing, and it finally set in, THIS internet was serious business, yes I was behind a proxy, only one, if this shit ever got to the FBI I was fucked, I panicked, i still wanted the stuff out there but I didn’t know how to rapidshit all that stuff, so I posted the pass on /b/, and then promptly deleted everything, and unplugged my internet and just sat there in a comatose state

He can’t be an experienced hacker if he used only one proxy and, er, left identifying code in the screencap he took. Stand by for updates. Exit question: Slap on the wrist for a first-term offense thanks to daddy’s connections, assuming Kernell’s the guilty party?

Update: Via Stacy McCain, Kernell’s father says no one’s contacted him or his son about the case — although he’s vague when asked if his son’s involved in any way.

And yet, people like Glenn Greenwald are continuing to put forth the meme that Governor Palin’s got something to hide.

Is there any way that we can get someone to push Greenwald into the ocean? Like, say, 50 miles out?

That doesn’t necessarily mean it was partisan… if this had only effected herself and not all of the contact on her list I would suggest that she let the kid go… but now it’s a toss up… getting this out of the news headlines would be a good idea…

Anyway, son of Dem state congressman… damn Rove is good…

He’ll be a great Democrat congressman down the road, though.

JellyToast on September 18, 2008 at 5:46 PM

media will call this a “harmless college kid prank, gone too far” and “name that party”

O’Reily better deliver as promised tonight

jp on September 18, 2008 at 5:46 PM

We need to start investigating these two pronto. How solid are his connections to Obama’s campaign? How involved is junior in politics generally? This has the potential of being a major scandal.

As for prosecuting the kid, I doubt charges ultimately will be filed. 99% of the time, e-mail hackers like this do not get criminally charged, as prosecutors have better things to do. Singling this guy out because he went after a famous person is not going to cut the mustard. However, if it can be shown he went after her e-mail to try and influence the outcome of the election, maybe it’d be worth tagging him in order to discourage that kind of behavior in the future.

Outlander on September 18, 2008 at 5:46 PM

If this was the a dems email that was hacked by the son of a GOPer, the GOPer would be forced to resign due to the outcry from the media

He’s 20 years old, so no ducking out on minor charges.

The question is, what will/ should he be charged with?

My vindictive side is calling for a public hanging, but I would settle for 24/7 press coverage and an in-depth investigations into Democratic supporter internet practices.

What was that Obama was saying about “no proof of involvement of my campaign staff”? Yeah… that should last about 6 seconds under even a cursory investigation.

Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 5:51 PM

I do believe the Obama campaign is behind this.

I bet David Kernell is an Obama supporter, and he outright said he hoped to derail Palin’s campaign – but I SERIOUSLY doubt the campaign put him up to it. If they were going to do it, they’d have used a few more proxies and done more to cover their tracks, and they *certainly* wouldn’t have bragged about it after. This is just a college punk who wanted to be a leet haxor – or at least, the next Kevin Mitnick.

Laura on September 18, 2008 at 5:51 PM

Does this mean that my ‘Whip-me-beat-me-call-me-Edna’ e-mails will end up in Howard Dean’s lap?

Limerick on September 18, 2008 at 5:52 PM

The reason I copied the name of the person associated with the email address rubico10@yahoo.com was because it was posted on another site (LGF) after someone had done a Google search.

In other words, the information was publicly available via Google.

If this is the person responsible (as signals seem to indicate), then he left a trail a mile wide. I have no problem posting publicly what was already publicly available elsewhere.

powerpro on September 18, 2008 at 5:52 PM

For this story to have political legs, this 20-year-old kid needs to have been put up to this by someone higher, much higher up the Dems food chain.

I would offer the hacker a deal if he will cooperate on the investigation.

Of all of the pimply college students in the world who could hack Palin’s account, it is too big of a coincidence that the one who did it (assuming this is true) is the son of a dem elected official.

I have been following Palin for awhile and I knew that there would be nothing incriminating.

You have to understand that Palin is REALLY ABOVE the table with stuff. That’s why she didn’t want to hide anything in the early days of Troopergate.

The recent resistance to the subpoena stuff is only because the investigation is no longer independent and is a political hit by Hollis French.

Just another bullet bouncing off the Cuda.

Has anybody noticed how tough she is on all these unfair attacks? I keep getting more impressed.
