Open thread: Part two of Palin on “Hannity & Colmes”

Judging from last night’s ratings, Palinmania’s alive and well. Sound off below if you’re watching, which you are. She gets off a couple of good lines in the leaked excerpts, especially the one directed at Biden. For the record, she probably would have been in fourth grade, not second, when Greasy Joe was first sworn in. And The One would have been just warming up to junior high.
While you wait, a video treat courtesy of CNBC. Click the image and skip ahead to 2:55 to watch. Surely a man who’d just wowed the faithful with a ringing endorsement of Obama at the convention would seize the chance to lay waste to the Republican newbie, right? See for yourself. Exit quotation from the same interview: “I’ve never concealed my admiration and affection for Senator McCain. I think he’s a great man.” Awesome.

Michelle did look kind of “frazzled”. I’m serious. That is not the same woman that showed up on the view. She almost looked like she was overcoming some sort of illness.

Hmmmmmm.
I’m watching the first day’s interview. I want more specific content and less populism from Gov. Palin. Maybe I’m being unreasonable.
SheofTwoMinds on September 18, 2008 at 10:04 PM
You’re probably one of those who immediately fell in love with George W. because of his looks. This country is screwed. Palin isn’t much more than W. with lipstick, yet people are going nuts over her. But when you look at her from the standpoint of brains or knowledge, she’s nothing more than an annoyance.
Fred and Rudy aren’t pretty either and I guess that means they don’t have much of a future in the party. Let’s all vote for the pretty lady!

Mr_Magoo on September 18, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Which of Clinton’s policies are you referring to? As recently as a few years ago, Bush people were insisting that W. should get full credit for the housing boom that really started to explode in 2002.

Drudge has last night’s cable numbers:
Now, while I am still worried about the youth vote who is pretty much unaccounted for in polls (most only have cell phones.. hell, most people I know only have a cell phone these days), and of course the black vote that will turn out in force, the consistency of Fox News dominating the other networks gives me “Hope” (and the audacity to have it). It would appear that those that are keeping up on the issues know where to go to get their news (and more importantly, where NOT to go, which I think really says something).
Also, something to keep in mind… There are a LOT of old Democrats who will never vote for a black man. I’m not sure where they’re reflected in the polls (Bradley effect, maybe?), but I promise you, they are legion, and they will come out for McCain… especially now that he’s got a “real” woman. Remember, senior citizen Dems aren’t quite as insane as the modern generation… Sadly the elder generation just gets their news from the traditional mainstream media, which has kept them voting Dem. Now, I don’t like there reasoning, but the truth is, many of them simply will not vote for a black man… and given what’s at stake, I don’t care if that’s a factor for them.

fiatboomer on September 18, 2008 at 10:11 PM
And he didn’t blame Bush specifically. He said it went on unchecked for too long, and McCain should follow up on his warning 2 years ago. One thing he said I agree with is it’s not about blaming Wall Street, it’s about restoring faith in America. McCain can do what he needs to do about Wall Street later. Now he needs to focus on restoring faith in America. He needs some really good “speeches”, especially in his debates.

Wow. Clinton says at the end that he thinks if we had an energy plan six years ago, people would have had more things to invest in other than real estate. And who’s fault is that? Congress! McCain needs to hit that hard.
Mr_Magoo on September 18, 2008 at 10:17 PM
For those who have not done so, take AP’s advice and watch the Bill Clinton video beginning at 2:55. He says great things about Palin that speak directly to the exact voter we need – those voters on the fence that are “concerned” about Palin due to the lies being spread. Bill gives her the exact props needed to sway that vote red.
Someone needs to clip that part out and play it for the masses. Bill Clinton is respected by many as being more independent and centrist than the current socialist ticket.

Mr_Magoo on September 18, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I will go along with that to an extent. Fred was my first choice, and Rudy my second. But McCain was the only one with a chance to win this election. And Palin gives him the best chance as well.
As for your comment that she is stupid, that just uncalled for. The kind of comment a troll would make. It’s just name calling, without support, and it doesn’t have much to do with leadership. Carter was one of the smartest presidents this century, but an utter failure as POTUS.

It is the dems weakness. How the dems think that someone that could rise to be a gov of a state of the US is stupid just underscores how really divorced from reality the dems are. You do not get to be a gov if you are stupid(esp if you had no family connections, no formal training, no millions of dollars to buy your way onto the ticket.)

By “populism” I meant the idea that other people’s success diminishes my opportunities. Hence, Wal-Mart is evil, corporations are evil, rich people are evil, etc. In contrast, I believe other people’s success enhances my opportunities.
However, as I look up the definition of populism in the dictionary, it looks like my use of the word did not accurately portray my views. Of course I appreciate it when our government represents the interests of ordinary people, especially when it does so by not obstructing success.
SheofTwoMinds on September 18, 2008 at 10:52 PM
I kept comparing Palin to Obama as I watched the interview. She did the entire interview without having to stop and think of what to say; without ANY “uh” or “um”. She spoke naturally and with conviction.
Obama looks completely incompetent in comparison to her. It’s like he has to map out every answer in his head before he can answer… and even then, it’s never a straight answer.

Man, that interview was fantastic. I wish Palin would do more interviews where she just gets to talk.
Debunking many of the smears against her.
Talking about her Alaskan reforms.
Talking about her faith.
Even a gay, “liberal” (socially), ex-Democrat like myself can appreciate and admire Sarah Palin.
This portion of the interview was absolutely fantastic. I just feel so American watching Palin, and that is a great feeling. That country is first. Not party. Not ideology. Not ego. I just want to go out and be American. I just signed up with my Catholic parish for a regular tithe, and also volunteered to help gay youth.
Obama’s “bi-partisan” rhetoric is dead. Palin is the real deal.

I see your point. I have no hatred for evil corps. etc. And when I see a lottery winner I smile for his good luck, when someone makes a great trade in the market like Buffet it gives me hope that I can do the same.
My problem with big business comes when they use their largness/money to corrupt our government. I believe that both business and individuals should be protected by our government. I do not like when our gov takes the sides of business over those of the population for no reason besides that the business gave that politician $2,000 that year.
Populism like anything else has its good points and bad. rule by the mob is not good but government for the best interest of the people is not bad. So I believe in fair trade not free trade, I believe in less spending, less corp welfare, less special tax breaks for individual business. lrss regulation but more oversight. etc. I am not a 100% pro business person nor am I a 100% pro union guy. I think what has made this country the greatest on earth is the ability to combine capitalism with socialism. as long as socialism is kept in the minority that our country will continue to grow and prosper and the workers that form the backbone will continue to be protected. I believe in the 40hr workweek, overtime pay, holiday pay, sick time but I also believe that companies should be able to hire and fire people when they are not doing their job. etc. Call it quasi-populism if you want.

They don’t really mean what they say about Palin. It’s more like the dialog from a teen slumber party:
“You know why Tina didn’t come over tonight? ‘Cause she’s sneaking out with Duane”
“But I liked Duane first!”
“That Tina is such a whore! I hear she has hair on her lip!”
“Oh yeah? You know what? I bet she, she, she sleeps with her brother!”
“Yeah? Well, she’s a big liar too!”
“And stupid!”
“And ugly!”
(In unison) “She’s so UGLY!”
(Various vomit noises)
“I hate her so much!”
“I wish she were dead!”
“I wish i were out with Duane.”

no problem. I always find it helpful to understand where the other person is coming from also. One final point. I think all of the above can be accomplished best with small gov and more local control of that government. big business would rather have one person to deal with than 50 states, or 9,000 cities etc. while individual rights are more protected when big business must deal with 9,000 cities.
unseen on September 18, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Gov Palin had no millions, no family connections, no part connections, no husband etc. she did it all on her own. That in itself says to me she is not stupid. there was no one behind her “writing” her speeches, coaching her for the 27 debates etc. She did it on her own. for mayor she knocked on every door. Not bought $1,000’s in ads etc.

I just had to say something here. I’m so embarrassed. Nobody is pointing out the obvious in this race. The presidential vote is really a national job interview. First, make sure the applicant has the basic qualifications, then go for the touchy-feelies to see if he’d fit-in with the corporate culture.
Obama’s qualifications aren’t sufficient to head a Senate committee, much less to be president. He has no executive experience…he’s never led anything (not quite true, he has led a few corrupt community activities), has no foreign relations experience, has little understanding of the American economic system (but seems to have a strong grasp of Socialism — the competitors’ system)…I could go on and on.
McCain’s qualifications on each point are evident, I don’t have to list them for you guys.
Then there’s the question on the job application: have you ever been arrested or convicted of a crime? Obama had better hope nobody enforces the Logan act.

blatantblue on September 18, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Oh my God, they hate her because she is beautiful and womanly and fertile. We are not supposed to be any of those things to get ahead in this mens’ world. We are supposed to act like men. We are supposed to cut our hair, wear drab pantsuits, and abort our babies because they are incompatible with a professional lifestyle. We are supposed to waste years getting several degrees so we have the right credentials to compete with men. Women who have already put their femininity in a lockbox to pursue a humdrum office job cannot stand looking at someone who didn’t. It undermines their entire lives. So they smear and slime Sarah Palin and suggest that she has to be some kind of dumb bimbo who isn’t even self-aware enough to know that she is just a sex object for the dumb white guys who vote Republican.
I’m exactly the kind of woman who “should” be hating Sarah Palin. But I think she is wonderful.

stonemeister on September 19, 2008 at 12:05 AM
Why do they hate her?
It has a little to do with the fact that she’s a conservative woman, but the main reason is cultural.
They think she’s a hick.
They hear her voice and her vocal mannerisms. They look at her demeanor and it screams: “she’s a hick. She’s like my stupid relations that I have to visit on the holidays. How DARE she think run the country? She’s a hick!!!”
I watch the interiew tonight and I think, “great someone like me, someone who finally speaks with my voice.”

I found her to be very bright and articulate………..
oh wait does that make me “racist”?
I just got done watching it. As an American conservative working single mother, I am just darn thrilled that McCain was a Maverick on this pick. (I am one of those that would have been holding my nose voting for him prior to this)
She is personable, intelligent and passionate about what she has done and what she has been asked to do.

Thanks, Irish.
Like I said: country first. I can be pro-gay, pro NFP, and also pro-faith.
But the important thing is I am pro-America. And that is why I am voting McCain-Palin.

I too belong to a large family of life-long democrats and I also live in a community that is largely democrat and go to church with a lot of ‘yellow dog’ democrats, I do not know one of them who are planning on voting for Obama. I don’t think it has anything to do with him being black, I really don’t. I think it is because these salt of the earth types know a ‘pig in a poke’ when they see one and are not buying. (And I’m talking about his economic policies :)

That’s rough. My dreams tend to get really good just before I fall asleep.

I really don’t understand why liberals are acting like Sarah Palin is the first conservative woman in the history of the United States? Is it because she is obviously much more prettier than what they expect female conservatives to be? Is it because she didn’t marry or be born into fame?
