Open Letter from Thaddeus McCotter to Gang of 10/16/20

Representative Thaddeus McCotter, the chair of the Republican House Policy Commitee, has a growing reputation as a conservative gadfly, speaking out bluntly on issues and sometimes challenging his own party to stick to their values.  Today, Rep. McCotter sends an open letter to Democrats and Republicans in the Senate attempting to push a compromise energy bill that does nothing to produce significant new sources of American oil and natural gas.

Dear Senators:

On behalf of our constituents and every American, we U.S. House Republicans urge you to reconsider your well-intentioned but ill-advised proposal to unleash but a portion of our nation’s energy supplies.

As you are doubtlessly aware, America’s energy crisis is harming people: high gasoline, natural gas and other energy supply prices are reducing margins for manufacturers, small businesses, all entrepreneurs and workers by raising input prices, which hit the most vulnerable in society extremely hard, particularly working people.  Furthermore, higher transportation costs to move products and employees are leading to shrinking profits, reduced investment, downward pressures on real wages and a downward spiral on earnings.  These ominous, convergent factors risk a period of economic stagflation not suffered by Americans since the 1970s.

Thus, we are compelled to oppose your present proposal.

Succinctly, while we have numerous policy reasons for our position, we trust these two flaws, alone, will persuade you to reconsider your proposal:

First, the proposal perpetuates a governmentally imposed ban – one long made obsolete by soaring energy prices – and, thereby, continues a governmentally imposed shortage of American energy, particularly oil and gas.  Thus, the proposal will not increase energy supplies sufficiently enough to provide economically suffering Americans critical, comprehensive relief from high gasoline and natural gas prices.

Secondly, compounding this problem, the proposal’s tax increase will be passed on to Americans through higher gas prices; thus, the proposal will increase working people’s pain at the pump.

Given these aforementioned fatal flaws, we urge you to heed working people’s cry to unleash America’s full energy; support an “all of the above” American energy security and independence strategy that lowers gasoline, natural gas and all energy prices; and, please, when addressing America’s energy crisis and other issues, always recall the words of President Ronald Reagan:

“Government isn’t the solution. Government is the problem!”

Respectfully,
Thaddeus G. McCotter
Chairman, Republican House Policy Committee

I wish I could vote for this guy. He is, by far, my favorite rep (and Rep. too)

It’s too full of fact, logic, and common sense to work. I give the guy credit for trying, though.

Into the circular file it goes.

Nan and harry will not do anything on this issue till after the election. They do not care a flying flick about American citizens, only how much their wallets are fattened.

Maybe Palin can do a reverse-Eaglton on McCain’t and McCotter can run for POTUS.

Change I would like!

J.J. Sefton on September 18, 2008 at 2:18 PM

This type of thing is a nexus between the imploding financial system and the political system. A gadfly, outsider, someone outside of the traditional structure, has a once in a lifetime opening here to circumvent the usual rules and structure and seize some power. With faith in Congress, and now the financial system gone, no one inside the system can speak with authority. Strange times.

The money words: “…continues a governmentally imposed shortage of American energy…”

Government is not the solution. Usually it’s part of the problem. What better example here than the current energy crisis.

They will have to do something. As I understand it, the OCS ban will expire on 10/1, unless it is reauthorized. The House already passed the bill. We just need the Senate to refuse to vote on this bill or one like it to come out of conference.

“Hope is a dangerous thing.”

As Pelosi would say: “We’re trying to save the world, not America.” By the way, I added the “not America” part, but that’s what she and her cronies mean.

thaddeus +1

I was confused for a moment. Without the Senate proposal at ready reference, the above caption intimates that McCotter’s letter attempts to push a compromise energy bill that ignores our current situation and future security as well. Comments assure otherwise.

I like this guy I think, but his face absolutely creeps my shit out. He looks like one of the bad guys in Beverly Hills Cop or Kojak episode.

YES! Exposed DNC Marxist Newspeak vocabulary opposite game.

maverick muse on September 18, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Saw him and several others last night on CSPAN. They were laying out one hell of a case on the floor of the absolute stupidity that the Democrats (and some Republicans) are acting under, especially over the past 18 months or so that they’ve been in power. It was quite nice to see people stand up for what is going on. Unfortunately they seemed to be the only ones on the floor and took to speaking directly into the camera considering the guy typing the session probably wasn’t the best guy to speak to.

CTDeLude on September 18, 2008 at 2:55 PM

What a shame no one will listen to him. We are at the mercy of these inept asshats.

jewells45 on September 18, 2008 at 2:58 PM

I would hope that this letter could be printed in newspapers and published online for all citizens to read.

Thank you, Rep. McCotter. Keep fighting for the citizens.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 18, 2008 at 3:03 PM

Only practical solution for US Energy problems is Nukes. Breeder Program abandonned by Democrat Traitor idiot Carter was picked up by French & Japanese. This is the quickest fix for American energy problems & the only one available in the immediate future. Drilling for oil & gas EVERYWHERE is still needed until Nukes are on line. Windmills should be installed off Mass Coast so that the Kennedys are both blinded & cut-off from Venzuela.

Thaddeus McCotter clearly has the coolest name in Congress. He sounds like a character from “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”

On topic, I sent emails to both of my senators, Isakson and Chambliss, both members of the Gang of Umpteen. I got a response from Chambliss. It was a form letter, of course, but it was quite substantive, and he included a fact sheet that even included some actual facts. I am still not sold on the bill and I will probably make good my threat not to vote for Chambliss. (I won’t vote for the Democrat, either.)

Thaddeus’ voice on the floor of the House yesterday was magnificent! Caught it on C-Span last night and was refreshed hearing such earnest common sense speech coming from a Representative truly concerned with serving his constituents.

alteredbeat on September 18, 2008 at 4:10 PM

It is a shame that McCotter will never amount to much. His rhetoric isn’t soaring. There is no… nuance. His letter seems to have a point! He seems to promoting some sort of…”action.” It’s almost like he expects the senate to ummm, “do something.”

Star20 on September 18, 2008 at 4:25 PM

Townhall’s Amanda Carpenter reports- Dems buckle on Offshore ban. Will let it expire on 10/1.

Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 2:30 PM

From the article:

Democrats have knuckled under to GOP demands to let the congressional ban on offshore drilling and shale recovery in the Rocky Mountains expire on October 1 for a period that will last at least through the rest of the year.

Now, maybe I’m being unduly influenced by our local Eeyore, but 3 months doesn’t seem like a lot of time to actually accomplish anything related to drilling\extraction.

I’m not saying I buy the “it will take 7+ years” bit either, but I’d be willing to be bet that once their election-seats are safe, democrats first action will be to reinstate the ban.
