Obama flip-flop on commissions

Yesterday, Barack Obama dismissed a suggestion from John McCain to form a bipartisan commission on the credit-sector meltdown. He scoffed at the idea, calling it Washington-speak for “We’ll get back to ya.” Fox News took a look at Obama’s own record on commissions and pointed out that Obama has publicly called for several such panels, including one for American war crimes in Iraq and a monitor for “bipartisanship” in Washington:
I’m no big fan of commissions, either. They sound reasonable but usually come up with the kind of compromises that solve nothing but look great. They don’t replace real leadership, and tend to create more problems when people give them more deference than any committee deserves. The 9/11 Commission is a great example of this; instead of streamlining our intelligence efforts, it slapped two layers of bureaucracy on top of the crazy-quilt of agencies, putting decision-makers further away from the raw data and exacerbating the conflicts between groups.
Obama, though, has a track record of a knee-jerk call to form them. As Fox points out and as Francis Beckwith documents, Obama has called for exactly the same kind of panels for:
- Social Security (November 2007)
- Torture (September 2007)
- War crimes (August 2008)
- Wall Street (April 2008)
So let’s get this straight. Obama called for a bipartisan commission on Wall Street oversight five months ago. John McCain now agrees with that suggestion. After McCain agrees, Obama says it’s nothing more than a political dodge? That’s far worse than John Kerry’s famous flip-flop on the $87 billion in war funding in 2004; it’s an admission that Obama was never serious in the first place.
Thanks for the clarification, Senator Obama. We’ll get back to ya.

Obama’s statements on so many issues remind me of a line from a WC Fields film:
Don’t do what I told you to do! Do what I tell you to do!

Even more important in that clip is the recital of McCain’s support for the Fannie/Freddie reform bill in 2005. It’s now into the MSM and we can keep hammering it and sending this video around until the rest of the media are forced to admit that John McCain WAS out front on this, and he was RIGHT just like he was right about the surge. I wish you had made your post about that and not aout the commissions foolishness. That’s a side show. We had 100 people here yesterday freaking out that nobody was talking about rhe Fannie/Freddie issue. Well, now they are.

he will say anything, and the media will let him get away with anything.
if not for that, McCain would win in a huge landslide.

I ask myself that every day! Before he was annointed as the nominee (way back in the beginning), I was on the Stop the Hillary Express. My husband kept saying “you better watch out for that guy (the messiah). I scoffed at him for awhile thinking “there is no way they could be that stupid”. Alas, the democrats have proved me wrong…I have to admit. But that’s the only time I’ll let that happen :)

Here’s what happened:
Too many people were given mortgages they couldn’t afford — either too much $ or else they weren’t in a position to afford anything.
Part of the reason was the government (both Republicans and Democrats) pushed for an “ownership” society that, while good in theory, didn’t take into account that a free market is cyclical and there will be downturns and that those on the margins will not be able to afford a mortgage during a downturn.
Part of the reason was greedy mortgage lenders, lending to unqualified people, sometime willfully.
Part of the reason was greedy borrowers, some who borrowed a bit too much, others who had no business borrowing in the first place.
Solution:
1) do not try and oversubscribe the “ownership society”
2) tighten up borrowing standards and do a real credit check.
You can send me a check for the cost of the commission. Heck, I’ll discount it to just 50% of the cost.

Unfortunately, right2bright is right about this news story. The Obamasses will never hear this of if they do it won’t matter because of the hopeychanginess of the Obamasiah. I know far too many people who could be shown that video clip of Obama attacking McCain on this commission issue and be shown the Fox news clip showing Obama’s prior love of commissions and McCain’s stand on Fannie and Freddie and still laugh and parrot Obama attack on McCain.
Of course I work at a university, so that should be of no surprise to me, but man it gets frustrating.

scary
EricPWJohnson on September 18, 2008 at 10:59 AM
He is not an idiot. A commission to investigate the meltdown will put Obamas best contributers and economics advisors in jail. Why do you think the Dems are adjurning Congress and running home? They don’t want to bring attention to the fact that they are responsible for the mess in the first place.
percysunshine on September 18, 2008 at 11:00 AM
There were “reader articles” all over Realclearpolitics.com about McCain’s 2005 attempt to regulate Fannie and Freddie, and also Obama’s illegal attempt to coerce Iraqi leaders into delaying troop withdrawals. IS this getting into the MSM, or only on Fox News and talk radio? I’m wondering if the only way this stuff gets out is if the McCain campaign or 527 groups run TV ads about it.
Steve Z on September 18, 2008 at 11:01 AM
because all the democrats have is to be contrary. their only platform is “which, that republicans are against; name calling; and whining.”
the democrats don’t want someone to study this, because it’ll track right back to their gov’t forced diversity initiative that forced banks to create risky loan programs to help minority groups or be fined and/or sued out of business.

No, not as far as we know at this time. The logs of the proxy service used by the criminal who accessed Palin’s Yahoo email are stored on a server that happens to be located in Chicago. This tells us nothing about the location of the criminal.
We will know soon enough. The authorities have more than enough information to track this down.

I have an idea why Obama likes committees–you don’t have to think, and there are always plenty of coffee and cigarette breaks.

I’m not sure suggesting a bipartisan commission is quite what we had in mind. Educating the public with documentation of event chronology might be a bit more effective. Now is the time to get this stuff out in the sunlight, not stick it behind a commission barrier in the good old boy network.

YIKES!!!!

TheHat on September 18, 2008 at 11:15 AM
McCain needs to do something very bold on the credit crisis. My view is that he needs to blame government and blame Freddie and Fannie. You make corrupt bureaucrats and government actors the culprits, and that plays right into McCain’s maverick reformer streak. It also takes some of the heat off the GOP for the bailouts of AIG and so forth, which are beyond outrageous.
Anyway, this has to get spun as something other than Republican incompetence screwing up the economy. McCain needs to step up and stand tall on this issue, and fast, or he can kiss this election goodbye.
Outlander on September 18, 2008 at 11:22 AM
A Bi-partisan commission to investigate itself? LOL! It would take a commission of remote New Guinea pygmies to get to the truth over Wall Street and the Mortgage Loan cluster f&$#k.

Mr_Magoo on September 18, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Obama called for a commission to monitor bipartisanship?!
Personally, I think bipartisanship is overrated, but let’s imagine for a minute that a commission was formed and it found that certain elected representatives weren’t deemed to be bipartisan enough (like Obama, but I digress) what happens then? How does it decide what is partisan and what isn’t? What are the consequences?

McCain: I asked for a commission to look into it and give the nation bipartisan recommendations on this crisis.
Obama: Just another ruse John. That accomplishes nothing. Only I know what to do because you just are part of the problem.
JM: In 2005, I co-sponsored real legislation. In 2006, you asked for a….commission. Sen. Obama, your record speaks volumes. You just want to show up and vote present just like you did in the Illinois Senate so many times before. I’ve asked for reform, you asked for, what was your words? ‘I’ll get back at ya’.
