New AQ locus: Yemen

Eli Lake continues his excellent reporting at the New York Sun on terrorism today by giving some interesting background on yesterday’s attack on the American embassy in Yemen. While most analysts believe that al-Qaeda operatives have fled Iraq for Pakistan, Lake reports that a number of them have instead set up camp in Yemen, the “ancestral home” of Osama bin Laden. Yemen has all but given up the fight against terrorists, and yesterday’s attack comes from that official disinterest — or worse:
Yemen, the site of a car-bomb attack yesterday on the American Embassy, is quietly emerging as a base for Al Qaeda veterans of the Iraq war, who are seeking refuge there and are close to establishing the kind of safe haven the group enjoys on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.
American intelligence officials believe that Osama bin Laden’s organization is regrouping in the governorates of Ma’rib, al-Jawf, and Hadhramaut along Yemen’s border with Saudi Arabia, and that Al Qaeda in Yemen is now being led by a former military aide to Mr. bin Laden, Nasir al-Wahishi.
“The foreign-fighter flow in Iraq has slowed down to a trickle,” a retired four-star general and adviser to Multi-National Force-Iraq, General Jack Keane, told The New York Sun. “They can’t get to their operational cells to be a bomber or a fighter, so some of them are going to other safe havens. A lot of this has to do with where they came from. But two of the places certainly are Pakistan and Yemen.”
That assessment was supported by two American intelligence officials whom the Sun contacted for comment on the bombing of the American Embassy yesterday in Sana’a. The attack killed 16 Yemeni nationals but no Americans, the Associated Press reported, and the attackers included at least one suicide bomber, as well as gunmen wearing Yemeni military uniforms and armed with rocket-propelled grenades. One of the tasks of the FBI, which will investigate the attack, will be to determine whether members of Yemen’s armed forces participated in the attack.
This was the second botched AQ attack on the embassy this year. The first, in March, also managed to kill no Americans or infidels, but it did kill a Muslim security guard and injure more than a dozen Muslim schoolgirls. Yesterday’s attack killed 16 people, all Muslims, and counterterrorist officials tell Lake that this will not endear AQ to Yemenis, even those inclined to support jihad.
Yemen has an uninspiring record on fighting terrorism. Earlier this year, they released a terrorist wanted by the US without informing us, and they have hardly lifted a finger to pursue other suspects. The implication of the military uniforms is disturbing. If true, then it’s possible that Yemen’s armed forces have allied with AQ, or at least elements within the military. Under the real Bush doctrine, that would make Yemen a potential enemy in this war.
Much of the post-Iraq war focus has rightly been on Pakistan and Afghanistan. We need to pay closer attention to Yemen, especially given its proximity to the failed state in Somalia and the ability to spread its cancer into Africa.

A radio report this morning said an American woman was killed in the bombing as well, but didn’t give details.

O-Bambi should immediately and decisively organize a commission to look into this.

You can tell where AQ is, because either we are blowing them up or they’re blowing themselves up. Neither way seems to be a formula for victory.

We need tough diplomacy without preconditions but WITH preparation to handle this.

Note that, like the USS Cole bombing, this is buried by the Democrats as “stuff that happens somewhere else”.

Can anyone offer a defense for the MSM as to their lack of coverage on the embassy bombing in Yemen?

It makes sense. When losing on one battle field, fall back, regroup and attack from a different, stronger position. The U.S. Military knows tactics and how to wage war-I’m sure that this Yemen front is no surprise, that it has been planned for.
I imagine Iraqis will be pleased to see Yemen become the focus for awhile. Iraq is just coming together as a country, and now will hopefully have opportunity to move forward.

Not the first time we’ve been crossed by these jerks.
Sorry. Had to.

The attack didn’t kill 16.
It killed 10 people – 6 guards and 4 civilians. The other 6 included in the overall number were the terrorists themselves.

Will Bush and/or Israel launch a strike against Iran after the election?
joepub on September 18, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Some day the US will learn how to fight against the arab/persian/muslim enemies. When the people who support and help these terrorists have to, themselves, pay a very high price. Yes … someday they will pay … someday we will recognize this as the war that it is … But, in the meantime, we’ll just let Iran go nuclear … and THEN we’ll get serious …

The New York Sun is a good paper.
We need Obama to go over and get in their face. That should take care of this once and for all.

Those boys just never learn. You would think after the Sunni Awakening in Anabar they would realize that killing home town Muslims indiscriminately doesn’t endear them to the local citizenry. Keep it up, guys.

Iran has a long history of sewing discord in Yemen. This may be part of Iran’s regional destabilization strategy–similar to the “strategy of denial” employed by the Soviets worldwide during the Cold War.
With Jordan reaching out to Hamas, and, prior that, Egypt being targeted with the wall breach, and now Yemen…
Feeding the Sectarian Frenzy
Of course, the Saudi press blaming Iran is nothing new, but I’ve read a dozen similar articles. Taheri has also sighted Iran’s hand in Yemen.
AQ cutouts armed by Iran striking in Yemen is not too big of a stretch. AQ’s command is located in Iran with cell-phone access…

Fixed.

I first noticed this trend with Columbine when they counted the animals that murdered people in with the fatalities. It’s a bizarre way to clump the dead together and externalize the cause of the problem.
The Israelites used to stone people to death and then burn their bodies in a pit, and not count them. Biblically sound due process as far as I’m concerned, and very applicable to Islamic terrorists.

Last week over at counterterrorismblog.org they were talking about reporters being pulled out of the field to go and find dirt on Governor Palin. They said it was going to hurt the terrorist watching and were very upset about this nonsense in going after Palin instead of concentrating on terrorism.
freeus on September 18, 2008 at 1:02 PM
This is an indication of something that George Bush has understood all along–terrorism isn’t limited to any one country or battlefield. The problem is widespread and must be fought on many fronts.

Pssst, Muslims, Al-Qaeda is not your friend.

It was in Yemen, October, 2000 (just before election), that Al Qaeda bombed the USS Cole.
jeff_from_mpls on September 18, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Ooops, I see several others mentioned the USS Cole.
How about I advance the story.
Ready for a laugh? I was re-reading the CNN transcript of the morning of the attack, and we have the CNN Correspondent reporting:
“The president had called his defense secretary, William Cohen. He also spoke with his national security adviser, Sandy Berger, the president instructing his national security team to do everything possible to track down those responsible for this attack.”
Hey, how’d that turn out?
Still no release of The Path to 911 DVD from ABC.
It would be a huge money maker, yet it sits in the lock box.
jeff_from_mpls on September 18, 2008 at 1:19 PM
Also, it’s always fun to say the name “Sandy Berger” — just the mention of it makes you laugh.
jeff_from_mpls on September 18, 2008 at 1:20 PM
LOL….let em have it. Little oil. Only export misery. Right on the coast. The U.S. Navy could turn it into a gravel pit before sunset.
Limerick on September 18, 2008 at 2:26 PM
That isn’t the real Al Qaeda. There was no AQ in Yemen before we invaded. We should be focusing on Afghanistan. That’s where the real AQ is.
