McCain battleground ads: Michigan, Ohio

The McCain campaign rolled out ads targeted at voters in Michigan and Ohio today, focusing on job growth in the two Rust Belt states. As one might imagine, the Michigan ad focuses on the auto industry, while Ohio’s is more general to the overall economy.
Michigan:
Ohio’s small businesses create more than half of all our jobs.
John McCain and his Congressional allies will help them create even more. With tax cuts to create jobs. Investments in renewable energy to revitalize Ohio’s manufacturing. Reforms to make health insurance affordable. And job retraining to help workers stay competitive.
Change is coming.
These are good ads, positive and optimistic, and in Michigan at least, specific. McCain’s team sent out a press release that outlined McCain’s intention to fund the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program, which was supposed to provide low-cost loans for the auto industry to retool for more efficient vehicles. It never got funded, and McCain wants to expedite that.
Ohio may be less specific, and for some reason it doesn’t include the same emphasis on domestic energy production. It talks about renewable energy, which makes sense in job creation, but the McCain campaign may be underestimating the political strength in Ohio and elsewhere of increasing domestic production of oil and natural gas. It will stoke job growth, keep American wealth inside the country, and relieve consumers of higher fuel prices. That policy works on more levels than just truck sales.
Overall, it’s a good start. They need to refine their national message better, though, and not be hesitant about making the same case in each state.

Here in Toledo we’ve been seeing ads for both candidates for quite a while now. And Toledo itself is heavily Democratic, not to mention in bad shape.

This positibity BS ain’t working.
Return to sarcastic and mocking ads, or face total annihilation.

So McCain is going Positive and Optimistic
Obama, Negative attack ads and doom and gloom(blame bush/mcCain).
depends on who Americans are these days partly. If 1930’s americans re-emerge Obama will win

Loans to automakers?

Very nice. It’s positive and forward looking to contrast with Barry the Street Agitator.

Sure sure, but when Obapo shows up, he will be sure to mention how big a fan he is of the Ohio State Bookends.

I like the “Change is Coming” tagline. I know GM and Ford have been hit hard with truck sales so maybe it’s good to mention it.
dmarie on September 18, 2008 at 4:57 PM
These ads are the right cross follow up to McCain’s left jab ads recently. With SP’s fancy footwork, I’d say Oslima should be down by the 3rd round debate.

As for the ads- spot on. McCain needs to make this a national theme.

would’ve been better if he was a national rep. instead of state level. and even better if it was out of Chicago instead of Tenn….Obama can brush this off easily with aide of media.
jp on September 18, 2008 at 5:01 PM
In the beginning of the Ohio ad, the clip in the lower right is from a 5-Hour Energy commercial (go to the 17 seconds mark).
locke on September 18, 2008 at 5:02 PM
Awww… come on. You had to see that one coming.
Automakers are going to get a bailout… no question. While I hate bailouts, I support this one more than AIG or Fanny/ Freddy.
At least this will earn a return on investment. The Chrysler bailout, I hate to say, actually worked well for all involved. We can’t afford to lose the largest base of manufacturing jobs in the US.

COAT TAILS!
Tony737 on September 18, 2008 at 5:04 PM
Cleaning up wasteful spending in Washington and drilling here and now are two issues alone that will very much help every state. I agree with Ed in that all states want to hear McCain wants to drill and not raise taxes on business.
Every industry has been hit, not just the automotive industry. My husband is in pharmaceuticals and he is unemployed. There are going to be more layoffs. Gas costs for their fleets and R&D is costing many companies a ton of money. Some pharmaceutical companies fear what both parties will do to them upon election. All this hate talk towards Wall Street, and not Congress or the particular Congressional members that caused all this chaos also makes them nervous. Not to mention the anger at BIG OIL. McCain and Palin need to be careful who they blame or target for our economic troubles.
freeus on September 18, 2008 at 5:04 PM
Strange words from Mr. “Those jobs are never coming back”.
Same guy that mocked Mitt for his message in Michigan is doing nearly the same now. Change is coming, indeed.
But, yeah, I approve of that more then AIG.
Spirit of 1776 on September 18, 2008 at 5:05 PM
I heard Obama had gay sex and coke with some guy called Sinclair.
Is this true?
Not sure if it’s verified, so just asking.

Very nice….. And Sent to a few people here in Alaska. LOL possiblity of linkage to Obama… let us all “hope”!
upinak on September 18, 2008 at 5:07 PM
McCain should use the debates to drive the point home. Cheaper energy means a better economy and more vehicle sales.
“People want fuel efficient cars but Washington makes diesel cars that get 60 mpg unprofitable to sell in the US do in large part to the heavy taxation of diesel. More domestic production and lower fuel taxation brings these high milage diesels closer to production. With the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program automakers can retool exisiting plants to produce the engines needed, and build them in America!”
The wizard of uh would not have a comeback for that, besides, “McCain is just trying to extend Bush’s policies.”
Theworldisnotenough on September 18, 2008 at 5:07 PM
I liked that line also. If he could get some dems congressional allies to come out and give him some props, it’d go a long way towards nailing the lid on Oslima.

Sooooo, how long before the FBI and SS actually arrest this felon and bring him to justice? Or will it take them until December to actually do anything.

Regarding that email hacker, one thing I found unusual was the language that was used in his post. It certainly did not sound like a kid or young adult, it had a very adult, business like flow to it. I just thought it read kind of like a very mature person wrote it.
bloggless on September 18, 2008 at 5:08 PM
The email he used was apparently rubico10@yahoo.com.
Rubico10 also has an account on “New Grounds” and links to what the account says is his personal website. There he gives his real name and info. He expresses a disdain for Fox News and says he lives in Tenn — the same location as that Democratic Legislator whose son’s name is the same. All of a sudden the father won’t talk about the matter, the corresponding account on YouTube is deleted, pages under the same name are made private or cleared, etc.. We may have found our guy.

These seem pretty weak. Attack ads work Obama has proven that again this week. Attack Obama on corruption! It will hit a nerve with the FannieMae mess. Celebrity and corruption are what got Obama where he is. Hit him with it.

Baaaaaaaaad idea. There’s some evidence but no where near enough to definitively say it’s his son. We don’t need to go around harassing him and/or threatening him.
Allah or Ed, please remove the number before it gets abused.
amerpundit on September 18, 2008 at 5:16 PM
Even if the media brush this one off (hacker identity), it will hurt Obama. Son of Democrat politician hacks Republican VP private email. Many people over 50 only know one thing about teh intertubes: how to send and receive email. This will horrify most all of them.
Buford Gooch on September 18, 2008 at 5:16 PM
OK. I didn’t go medieval on him or anything, jut clearly mentioned this is gonna hurt a lot politically.

The problem is they all have their fingers in their ears. Who is going to carry the news? No one will tie it to Obama. He is being protected by everyone now, even Fox has shifted to protect Obama.

Phone numbers can get you in trouble.
upinak on September 18, 2008 at 5:18 PM
I have to agree on posting the residential phone number of this guy being a bad idea. I would suggest HA remove it, please.
Plus, if this turns out NOT to be true, that Rep. could go after anyone who has harassed him by phone if he wanted to.
Conservative_SAHM on September 18, 2008 at 5:18 PM
So you know what I said about only “some evidence”? Yeah, uh, the Democratic legislator has been contacted by the feds in connection and his page is now gone.
amerpundit on September 18, 2008 at 5:19 PM
So it was a Dem/Obama symp who hacked into the Cuda’s email. Did anyone really think that it was a Republican?
This won’t hurt Obama, politically. The scumbag needs to go to jail though. (The hacker, I mean…ok, well Obama probably does too…)
pugwriter on September 18, 2008 at 5:21 PM
That’s OK in my view. I just wouldn’t post the # out of fear it would be used in a way to hurt Hot Air. I’m sure the # is readily available for anyone so inclined.
csdeven on September 18, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Great ads especially that of Michigan. That state is suffering economically; worse than any other state.
I don’t see why people of Michigan would vote for a liberal, when the liberals in their state have ruined the economy there.
jencab on September 18, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Maybe but it could also sound like the Old boys club. Obama has been saying that if any one should know the old boys club it is McCain. I think it is too vague.
Unless–unless they have something like the “contract with America” stuff that worked before. But I think they have to tread very carefully. And they really should be hitting Obama hard on the corruption thing to soften up the voters before they hit them with whatever is comming tomorrow.
petunia on September 18, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Pull the number then. He’s been contacted.
I am officially back in the doghouse. :)
I have to admit though, it is kinda nice when the Dems squirm just a little bit.
Sapwolf on September 18, 2008 at 5:24 PM
You guys are so easily distracted – like little children with autism or ADHD.
McCain is tanking harder than he ever has and all you can focus on is the hacked Yahoo account of Gov. Palin, which has nothing to do with anything.
This is why McCain is going to lose in November.
an_abstraction on September 18, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Good point. Perhaps it would be wise for McCain to have some names to drop, if and when Oslima brings up that point?
csdeven on September 18, 2008 at 5:25 PM
Too bad the ad didn’t make that point. I think it is too subtle.
petunia on September 18, 2008 at 5:25 PM
Your heart is in the right place. But only Democrats get away with stuff like that.
petunia on September 18, 2008 at 5:27 PM
The hacking is a federal crime and privacy invasion that carries a penalty of 5 years. You wouldn’t be expressing the same “It’s a distraction!” sentiment if Obama’s email was hacked.
McCain’s temporarily down nationally, leads in the Electoral College, and is very competitive in swing states.

Conservative_SAHM on September 18, 2008 at 5:29 PM
It was diffrent but it was about the invasion of privacy too. But I don’t want to jump on to conclusions, I’d rather wait for an oficial comfirmation of the identity of the hacker. Then we can talk about. And no, the msm is not going to be able to hide the story under the rug.
clemycali on September 18, 2008 at 5:33 PM
We need Woodward and Bernstein on the case. They can trace it from the TN Rep. all the way up to Obama!
It would be awesome if this hacker is on the Obama action team or is a phone banker or a street preacher for him, or something.

I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. Mike Kernell is certainly a big supporter of The One and I am sure that there is trickle down PDS to his son. Still, considering how it was spread and the amateurish nature of it; I figure the son was acting independently.
That said, this is a demonstration of the complete disregard that the Democratic Party has for common decency and laws.

Does anybody familiar with D-KOS, HuffPost, and DU know if they also show the same restraint? Or is this a HA thing?
By the way, both of those TV adds for Michigan and Ohio look OK. I give them a B.

Nice ads. Beat them into the locals a couple dozen times and they’ll feel better about the prospect of a President McCain. Once again, his campaign is doing the correct thing. They b-slapped Barry for a couple weeks and now Barry is looking like some mad crackhead telling his people to get in the faces of those that don’t follow the Obama Way.
When people tell Obama his hate-mongering isn’t working, in a few weeks, McCain’s people can drop the hammer on all the remaining skeletons in Obama’s closet. It is going to be a fun October.

If McCain had the ballz, he’d promise to get rid of the federal government interference with the energy and auto industry.
The “Big 3″ are making decent money with their cars outside of the USA, but due to various regulations (and the high cost of diesel fuel here in the US), cars like the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic won’t even be offered for sale here.
Yet while half of all cars sold in Europe last year ran on diesel, the U.S. market remains relatively unfriendly to the fuel. Taxes aimed at commercial trucks mean diesel costs anywhere from 40 cents to $1 more per gallon than gasoline.
Dumazz politicians screwing America again (and again, and again…!)
