I wonder why McCain isn’t as friendly with the press?

Adam Nagourney of the New York Times laments the fact that John McCain just isn’t the same free-wheeling, fun-loving guy on the campaign trail with reporters and looser on the stump.  Perhaps he should do an archive search at his own newspaper to figure out why.  No sooner did McCain win the primaries than the Gray Lady began smearing McCain, and did so repeatedly.

First, Nagourney’s cri de coeur:

Senator John McCain’s campaign events were once free-wheeling journeys marked by flashes of humor, candor and arch observations from the candidate about presidential politics — and John McCain. Oh, and moments that left no doubt that Mr. McCain was not working from any script.

“Thanks for the question, you little jerk,” Mr. McCain said to a New Hampshire high school student who inquired about his age last year, raising his eyebrows as he chortled at his own joke. “You’re drafted.”

Not these days. As Mr. McCain worked his way through Florida and Ohio as the Republican Party’s nominee for president this week, he was a candidate transformed. …

Mr. McCain’s once easy-going if irreverent campaign presence — endearing to crowds, though often the kind of undisciplined excursions that landed him in the gaffe doghouse — has been put out to pasture. He takes far fewer chances, meaning there are fewer risqué jokes, zingers at a familiar face in the crowd, provocative observations on policy or politics, or exercises in self-derogatory humor. By every appearance, this Mr. McCain is, or at least is struggling to be, disciplined and on message in a way befitting of American politics today, if not quite befitting of the McCain of yesterday.

Let’s take a stroll down Smear Memory Lane, shall we?

  • February 21: The Times publishes a story that accuses him of having an affair with a lobbyist — or at least wanting to have an affair with her — based on the word of two disgruntled former staffers, who tell a ridiculous story about confronting McCain without any of his senior advisers ever knowing about it.  (I wrote extensively about this at Captain’s Quarters.)
  • March 7: Elisabeth Bumiller writes a story about McCain exploding in anger over a question she asked; video later shows she lied.
  • March 10: The Times has Dr. Lawrence Altman issue a prognosis on McCain’s skin cancer with the handicap of never having been in his presence.  They also criticize him for not releasing his medical records, despite the fact that he did in 1999, and that no other candidate had, either.  In fact, Barack Obama still has not released his medical records.
  • April 10: Continuing in its tradition of fortunetelling in its news sections, the Times tells its readers that McCain may come under the influence of dreaded neocons.  Its source?  Another person who doesn’t talk with McCain.
  • May 4: The editorial board scolds McCain for not releasing his medical records — even though they note that he planned to do so on May 23rd. To date, they still have not once demanded that Barack Obama release his medical records, nor Joe Biden.
  • May 21: After the editorial, the McCain campaign refused to invite a reporter from the Times to the press conference in which McCain would release his records.  The Times tell the campaign that they will write a negative story about the records unless they get their invite.  I publish the story and ask for a response; the Times refuses to comment.
  • May 22, 24: The hit piece comes out, and it’s a weak complaint about the release of the records being “tightly controlled.”  In 1999, though, McCain had fewer media outlets and earned the praise of the Times for his openness.
  • July 30: The paper that ran the “General Betray-Us” ad scolds McCain for his negative campaigning, failing to mention that Obama actually started running negative ads first.

Believe me, this is not a comprehensive list.  If Nagourney wanted to spend a few more minutes and report on the treatment McCain has received from his paper and the media in general honestly, he could come up with enough fodder for ten blog posts or more.  With a track record like this, small wonder McCain doesn’t cozy up to reporters — and the Times of all outlets should be the last to whine about it.

Well done, Ed. You are a credit to bloggers.

Do we even have a press in this country anymore? We have a bunch of people with cameras, microphones and typewriters but they appear to have no interest in reporting on issues.

The Press has been replaced with Public Relations Firm of the DNC.

Elizabetty on September 18, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Sometimes Ed, you don’t leave much to say. I watched TV today. That was a mistake. I’m disgusted with all media.

petunia on September 18, 2008 at 6:15 PM

If the press can take it away from Madame Hillary (which they did), the press can take it away from anybody.

jay12 on September 18, 2008 at 6:16 PM

These people really do live in another world. It’s more than a bubble. And goes beyond dishonesty or denial. I think they actually lack a grip on reality. Does this guy know where he works!?!

D0WNT0WN on September 18, 2008 at 6:16 PM

It will only get worse.

BTW,for folks who have not given up hope and actually think there is a chance that McCain might win this thing, there are new polls out from ARG with him in front, and this electoral map gives McCAin enough electoral votes to win.

We can dream, can’t we?

Terrye on September 18, 2008 at 6:18 PM

You gotta be kidding with that question. All these media folk are writing their columns with biased Obama tinted glasses. We have an entire network, MESSNBC, that is based in and broadcasts from Obama’s ass. And the question is why isn’t McCain for friendly with the press. C’mon

titus_pullo on September 18, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Why would the Times want Obama to release Joe Biden?

km on September 18, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Maybe because McCain doesn’t believe in talking with our enemies?

McCain will win this election. I’ve been saying it since Hillary trounced B.O. in PA and OH. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Ed,

I believe it will be worth it to keep the list of NYT articles going….

He takes far fewer chances, meaning there are fewer risqué jokes, zingers at a familiar face in the crowd, provocative observations on policy or politics, or exercises in self-derogatory humor.

Hmm, I wonder how the NYT would react to any one of these. Not with the fondness claimed about them.

Darth Executor on September 18, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Gee… does anyone think that the press are getting their talking points from the Obama Camp?

Biden Piles On Palin, McCain re: Press Access

Funny thing is that the “Scrappy Kid from Scranton” seems to confused “68, 70 press conferences” with… ummm… 2. One of the 2 was limited to Gustav questions.

Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 6:31 PM

And they want to know why Palin isn’t eager for a sit-down to talk about her grandson Trig, either. Keep watching your stock drop, you journalistic icons you.

Jim Treacher on September 18, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Pollster.com has MI, WI, and PA going as tossups today. (They also have IN and WV as tossups per one poll each tilting the balance).

Let the media conitue parroting David Axelrod’s boy. It’s not helping.

SouthernGent on September 18, 2008 at 6:36 PM

NYT revenue down another 8+%. Pinch really does need to learn the first rule of holes.

I bet they don’t teach such common sense at the Ivy league.

America, and the world, will be a far better place when Sulzberger’s First Amendment protected temper tantrum finally goes under.

I for own eagerly await the healine in the New York Sun: Times Closes, Truth Safe At Last.

Thats because the bias,in the tank,Liberal press
want to win this election more than Obama!

And,Maverick knows, that the ever helpful press
are as about as helpful,as the NV,so to speak!!

It’s like asking a rape victim way she isn’t jazzed about hangin’ out for drinks with the attacker.

mylegsareswollen on September 18, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Since no one cares what anyone at the NYT thinks anymore, the whiny article should not be a blip on anyone’s radar screen. Good synopsis Ed.

HawaiiLwyr on September 18, 2008 at 6:47 PM

It’s like when somebody kicks a dog time and time again, and then one day, that dog just isn’t around anymore and finds someone else who doesn’t kick them.

Keep up the fight because it is looking good that McCain will win this close fight. Obama will probably get Iowa + what Kerry won, but he would still need more. McCain can gain in the debates too where the MSM cannot as easily manipulate what Americans will see. It could really be a defining moment.

Sapwolf on September 18, 2008 at 6:49 PM

At least McCain now recognizes that the MSM (NYTs) are not his friends anymore. A lot has changed since the NYTs endorsed McCain earlier in the campaign.

Hmmm… not sure how I should take that.

Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 6:52 PM

The mainstream media doesn’t have the influence it may have had prior to the internet. Most are partisan political hacks with an common agenda dictated to them by their “leaders” who are bought and paid for like damaged goods. Why would McCain waste time when he knows he would be dealing with media lies, deception and innuendos? ABC proved they were incapable of telling the truth with the interview with Sarah. Why waste your time.

volsense on September 18, 2008 at 7:06 PM

I hope McCain realizes what a stupid and shallow move it was to court the press at all. If, via the crap Ed documents above, John McCain realizes what a muppet he was to trust the press and refer to them as “my base”, then all this MSM crap will be worth it. McCain will be the better for it, either as President or as Senator.

zmrzlina on September 18, 2008 at 7:14 PM

After the Palin media riot my only interest in the NYT is doing whatever I can do to help put them out of business.

JEM on September 18, 2008 at 7:23 PM

I hope that all the Republican House and Senate members remember the Times treatment of McCain. No matter how cozy they get with the media, the media will never be on their side. Limbaugh warned the freshmen GOP class in ‘94 about getting friendly with the press…McCain is living proof he was right.

Cindy Munford on September 18, 2008 at 8:03 PM

It’s awfully telling how McCain used to be a media darling and as soon as he clinched the nomination the Times and other outlets treat him as Public Enemy #1 #2 (Palin’s numba 1).

OneGyT on September 18, 2008 at 8:41 PM

(Psst! Janos! Don’t feed the trolls…)

Mary in LA on September 18, 2008 at 8:47 PM

The MSM will NEVER be friendly with ANY Republican. McCain has learned that lesson well.

Again, why do we need those people? They ARE the PR arm of the DNC. Let’s get over and pass them and directly to the American people.

newton on September 18, 2008 at 9:00 PM

If the NYT folds, well…it’s just another dead newspaper. People treat it with reverence; why? Because it used to be great? Hell, a lot of things used to be great, then got old and tired. The NYT staff believes they can stand on past “greatness” and stay afloat. They don’t understand why they are sinking. It’s like the future of media…they just don’t get it. They think they still define the narrative. Good riddance.

SKYFOX on September 19, 2008 at 5:25 AM

The NYT have always been a propaganda tool of the left. I read an article the other day from the Times attacking our military and the atrocities they were commiting. My first impression was the Iraqi War, but it was written just after the Normandy invasion in WWII. The brainwashing may be slowing coming to an end because of the access of information on the internet. McCain has a shot at taking the state. Maybe a chance for “white trash” afterall.

volsense on September 19, 2008 at 9:30 AM

Ed, here’s one to add to the list:

February 21: Bill Keller defends its McCain-affair hit piece by lamely asserting that

We knew from our experience last year, when word leaked out we were pursuing this story, that Senator McCain’s operatives would set out to change the subject by making the story about The New York Times rather than about their candidate. That’s a time-honored tactic for dealing with potentially damaging news stories.
