Biden: Taxes not just a patriotic duty — but also a religious experience

posted at 7:35 pm on September 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Joe Biden decided to double down on his ridiculous statement from this morning that patriotic people wouldn’t complain about paying higher taxes.  Instead of simply shrugging it off or backing away from the statment, as almost anyone else would have done, Biden instead justified higher taxes by making it a duty — as a Catholic:

Fired up in a room full of union members, Joe Biden angrily defended both his ticket’s tax plan and his own claim that tax hikes for the rich are patriotic, while urging fellow Democrats to stand their ground on what he said was a values debate.

Biden, speaking to members of the Laborers International Union of North America, began by saying that there is “no disagreement” between John McCain and Barack Obama on the need for tax cuts. The real issue, he said, is who gets them.

“Catholic social doctrine as I was taught it is, you take care of people who need the help the most,” he said. “Now it’d be different if you could make the case to me that by giving this tax cut to the very wealthy, everybody else was going to be better off. We saw what happened the last eight years when we gave that tax cut.”

I’m really beginning to believe that Joe Biden got his Catholic instruction from Father Guido Sarducci and Sister Mary Elephant.  Leaving aside the ridiculous notion that a politician poses as a Catholic on social issues and still supports abortion, Catholics are taught to act as individuals to assist the poor.  Nowhere in Catholic doctrine (the catechism) can one find the notion that taxes are required for this purpose.

In fact, in seven out of eight references to taxes in the catechism, taxes are mentioned in context of “tax collectors” — people who today would be called Quislings or thieves, and perhaps both.  In only one instance does Church doctrine talk about paying tax, when Paragraph 586 notes the significance of Jesus paying the temple tax, which also has nothing to do with acts of charity.

In the most well-known Biblical passage on taxpaying, Jesus tells the Pharisees to “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”  Paragraph 2242 instructs that this makes clear the separation of taxation from religious duty, “the distinction between serving God and serving the political community.”  There is a moral duty to pay taxes as residents of a nation, but nothing is ever said in doctrine that insists on paying more, or hiking taxes, or in satisfying the need to assist the poor by forcing others to pay more in taxes.

And speaking of Biden’s Catholic duty, he seems very free at confiscating the money of others while demonstrating little charity on his own.  His tax returns show an average of $369 a year in charitable contributions, a miserly 0.3% of his income.  If Biden wants to help the poor and downtrodden, then he needs to start by using his own resources before going after the pocketbooks of others.

It never ceases to amaze/amuse me that Catholic liberal polticians will say they must carefully separate their religion from politics on the issue of abortion (or embryonic stem cell research), but when it comes to “social justice” (tax and spend liberalism) their Catholic faith “informs” and determines their position.

“Catholic social doctrine as I was taught it is, you take care of people who need the help the most,” he said.

My dad was this type of Catholic. He voted for Kennedy and worked as a social worker with some of the lowest of the low. He stopped voting dem when McGovern ran.

I recently found that my dad was also his union president and as such had to interact with Biden quite a bit during some contract negotiations (he worked in DC so they were sort of quasi-federal employees). His impression based on those interactions was that Biden was a consistent liar. ‘Guess Plugs didn’t bother reading the Ten Commandments. Perhaps its time for one of the archbishops to take Joe to the woodshed again.

I think Biden wants us to follow Obama the same way that Simon Peter, James, and John did when they left everything and followed Jesus. Because that’s what Biden learned in Catholic school–Obama is the Messiah.

Wethal on September 18, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Yea, Jesus really didn’t say to render somebody else’s money unto Caesar, just your own. If Biden thinks that the US Govt. is the best charity through which to help the poor, he’s more than welcome to give as much of his money to it as he wants (you are legally allowed to pay more taxes). But hand’s off my own money. I’ll determine which charities I give to.

(As an aside, I’d be really interested in Biden tithes to his church…)

Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Contrast and compare. See the ABC News article posted April 18, 2008 entitled “John McCain Releases Tax Returns“. An excerpt from that article:

McCain earned $419,731 in income in 2007, from a combination of his Senate salary, book royalties and his pension and Social Security income. McCain paid $84,460 in federal taxes – $258,800 of his income was taxable.

Together, the McCains donated $210,000 to charity, most of which was given to a family foundation bearing their name. That organization distributes money to other charities directly, the campaign says.

My collie says:

How can people NOT see that this election is ALL about the character of the candidates? A little arithmetic shows that McCain gave 81% of his taxable income to charity in 2007.

I would interesting to see Cindy’s return. It wouldn’t surprise me if she gave more than John.

Someone might want to tell Biden that average income has gone down, while median income has gone up, under Bush. For the statistically inept, this means that the rich have gotten slightly less, and the most of the rest have gotten slightly more.

“Tax cuts for the rich” doesn’t have the same zing when you find out that the rich haven’t actually gotten ahead, while most others have.

There’s usually a big gap between what people say about their own economy, and what they think about the economy in general. Democrats seize on the latter because it’s determined by the media coverage, which of course is dictated by the Democrats.

What has happened in the last eight years is that now 38% of tax returns show no tax owed, as compared to 11% at the beginning.

Biden is a liar, more people are paying less tax, and the rich more, than ever before. He wishes to reverse the result of the Bush tax cuts?

Harry Schell on September 18, 2008 at 8:09 PM

Note to the McCain team: you need a rallying cry, along the lines of “It’s the Economy, Stupid.”

I would suggest that — wherever you speak — you develop a simple routine of asking the crowd:

* Do you think you need to pay more taxes? (”Noooooo”)

* Do you think you need to send more of your hard-earned dollars to Congress, to just to prove to Joe Biden and Barack Obama that you are “Patriotic?” (”Nooooo”)

* Do you think more government in Washington DC is going to solve your problems here in ________?” (”Noooooo”)

* Are you clinging to your guns and your God because you’re bitter? (”Noooooo”)

* Does your pastor at your Church for God to “Damn America?” (”Noooooo”)

* Do you think a Presidential candidate should be making secret deals with the heads of foreign governments about when American souldiers will be coming home? (”Noooooo”)

* Do you think we should be buying all this oil from foreign governments, when Governor Palin says they have plenty of it up in the great state of Alaska? (”Nooooooo”)

So what’s the answer? Noooooooo-bama.

Note to Biden: The rich and the Christian (and anyone else) can donate however much money they think is appropriate to anyone they want, at any time. That means they can even donate to the good old USA if they so desire. Nothing is stopping them.

Bottom line: Biden should feel free to preach generosity all he wants -but its not “generosity” if its mandated by law.

Not filing taxes might work if it weren’t for withholding. Withholding taxes from paychecks is the only thing that keeps this horrid tax system of ours afloat. If everyone had to pony up the money from their own bank accounts, instead of the nearly painless system of the government taking it before you get your grimy hands on it, there would be a tax revolt that would make the Boston Tea Party look like…well, a tea party.

Buford Gooch on September 18, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Aren’t Catholics supposed to tithe 10% of their income?

Yes, all Christians are supposed to do so. While the New Testament leaves the amount unspecified, Old Testament law talks about a tithe.

Also, just to make it clear, “tithe” translates as “tenth,” not “give,” though it’s commonly used as a verb. Thus, to be nitpicky, “tithing 5%” would be a contradiction. “to tithe” is really “to give 10%.”

They intend to give “rebates” to those who pay no taxes, and call it a tax cut. I’m not being sarcastic. It’s really what they are planning. To quote a candidate, “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Buford Gooch on September 18, 2008 at 8:27 PM

It’s not just Biden’s position on abortion that is at odds with the Catholic doctrine. What about his personal obligations to support his local parish, the the Holy See, and to generally help the poor?

Senator Biden does not tithe. He doesn’t even give 1% to charity:

The Delaware senator and his wife, Jill, showed annual earnings of more than $200,000 and sometimes $300,000 between 1998 and 2007. And they gave relatively very little of it away. In 2007, their most generous year, the Bidens gave $995 to charity. In 1999, their charitable donations added up to $120.

Aren’t Catholics supposed to tithe 10% of their income?
Damiano on September 18, 2008 at 8:00 PM

No, there is no requirement for Catholics to tithe to the Church. Jesus himself has instructed us in his own words as to where our charity should go, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church indicates so under the sections for “Almsgiving” and “Charity”.

Each Catholic, as the Captain points out, has an individual responsibility which cannot be handed off to any institution, the Church hierarchy included. The Church expects each of us to give according to our means, but does not set a rule stating a means test.

In short, the Church is not the Eternal Revenue Service.

unclesmrgol on September 18, 2008 at 8:33 PM

I disagree that paying taxes is a moral duty. It’s governmental THEIVERY. We had no income tax in this country before woodrow wilson and no GENERAL income tax before FDR created his “temprorary” income tax.

Taxes always and only aid the aristocracy in whatever form that may take.

“Catholic social doctrine as I was taught it is, you take care of people who need the help the most,” he said.

– Joe Biden, plagerizing the Pope

…except that he should look to his pronouns. “You take care”…not Uncle Sam take care, not you take care or else, or I’ll decide how much you care to take care….

The Savior, John the Evangelist, Paul the Apostle, and the guy who wrote Hebrews never mentioned wealth distribution. I remember Matthew 22:19:

Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (ESV)

…nope…he counselled self-sacrifice and self-denial, not government mandated taxation to take all you possess and redistribute it more “fairly”.

If Commuter-Rail-Ridin’ Joe got the bit about helping the poor, I wonder if he maybe slept through the part of Sunday School where they talked about respecting life…and then slept througth the many recent admonitions directly to him about the same subject, sent by some pretty well-informed clergy in his church….

…but, then, his colleague on the ticket’s already been compared the Christ, so maybe — working for a version of the Incarnate Word — he’ll get a pass on that…an indulgence, maybe…then again, dropping your coin into Tetzel’s ringing coffer was voluntary….

Puritan1648 on September 18, 2008 at 9:33 PM

Nowhere in Catholic doctrine (the catechism) can one find the notion that taxes are required for this purpose.

Or, as an Evangelical would say, nowhere in the Bible can we find that notion.

But it comes off lame, like a cheap stunt a fellow might try after reading a self-help book.

In other words, he comes off like the character of Michael in NBC’s “The Office.” Stiff. Trying too hard. Totally transparent.

One has to seriously start wondering if perhaps the pressure is starting to get to poor old Joe here. After all, he has pretty much been all but ignored ever since Sarah Palin stepped into this campaign and brought in some needed sanity.

Soooo, according to Biden, I guess we can assume Charlie Rangel is not patriotic.

There was a time that I could not walk, I was paralyzed from the waist down.* But when I paid my taxes last year, I could feel the healing power of Big Government shoot tingles up my legs and I have been able to walk ever since.
Thanks, Joe Biden for restoring my legs! Praise the House Ways and Means Committee!!!

*It may have just been that my legs had fallen asleep.

Joe, are you questioning my patriotism? Using McCarthyist smears to confiscate the money I earn so you can buy other people’s votes?

Hey Joe, that’s really offensive. Have a heaping patriotic scoop of ‘kiss my butt’.
