The obligatory “Palin’s e-mail account hacked” post; Update: McCain camp responds

posted at 4:21 pm on September 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

Not a hoax, apparently, but also not obviously the work of political partisans. Sounds like trolls out for a thrill.

Another screenshot shows Palin’s inbox and a third shows the text of an e-mail from Amy McCorkell, whom Palin appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

The e-mail, a message of support to Palin, tells her not to let negative press get to her and asks Palin to pray for McCorkell, who writes that “I need strength to 1. keep employment, 2. not have to choose.”

The Republican Party hasn’t responded to a call for comment, but McCorkell, reached at her office, confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin.

I’m refraining from looking at the screencaps on the assumption that (a) if there’s anything foul in there it’ll be all over the wires soon anyway, and (b) if there isn’t then there’s no need to pry. Politico expects the political fallout, such as it is, will only help her, but see the comments at Time for the developing counterspin: How can we trust our national security to a woman who can’t come up with a password that zzzzzzzzz.

Update: I don’t know if Google, AOL, etc., track the number of times each day their users change their passwords, but if so we’re probably in store for a new record.

Update: Outrage from Maverick’s campaign manager, Rick Davis:

“This is a shocking invasion of the Governor’s privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment.”

Update (Ed): The group taking responsibility certainly has a history of partisan attacks, as Caleb Howe notes in his post.  He has a picture and a video that he took of their protest at the Republican convention, although Howe also wonders exactly why they were there:

As an aside, this is why I tend to stay away from web-based e-mail.

Sounds like trolls out for a thrill.

Oh, no, Allah. This is not just trolls.

Just yesterday, while my husband and I were showing our house to a Realtor, some teenage kid threw four eggs on the roof and the driveway of our house. Now, that’s a vandal and a troll.

Those who did that to Palin and her husband are criminals. I hope the Secret Service deals with them appropriately.

My credit union got hacked also, luckily it was my account = no money. The “service” kept sending me notices that no one had done a credit inquiry on me when I knew in fact that someone had so I called the company. They didn’t speak English and the credit union wouldn’t help because they said I was the service’s customer. Long story longer, don’t trust the service.

LimeyGeek

…all the time…

At what level was the account which was hacked? Private? State? Federal security is handled differently than corporate, most state and usual private email security. Lotsa more hoops…doesn’t mean they’re any better…just different.

The point of intelligence is to find good stuff. If they did, as folks here have said, we’d've heard by now…even if there’re reams of “I love your sugarpants” letters to and from that Wooten loser being set aside for an October Surprise, we’d've heard something.

Like most people, it would seem that the divine Sarah’s secret life isn’t very interesting.

McCain still uses a quill pen that he dips into a bottle of ink and then seals all of his correspondence by lighting a candle and dripping the red wax on the envelope before he presses it down with the ring that bears his seal.

RiteWingFascist on September 17, 2008 at 5:16 PM

It is obvious that some on the left are totally invested in the election of Damien Thorn Him and are willing to go to great lengths to attack those that oppose Him.

Going forward, I think we could well be standing on the precipice of a concerted effort to target Republicans. Global hacker communities are pretty common and tend to coalesce around shared interests.

If this doesn’t get the FBI involved pronto and in a very public way, I give it a few days before some campaign websites go down and hacking for grist for the political mill becomes more common.

You must ALWAYS use https when viewing your google mail (not just when logging in). Google sends a “cookie” in the clear when you use regular http to read your mail. Particularly if you are on a wireless network, that cookie can be “snagged” and used to access your email account.

When viewing your gmail, there is a “settings” link in the upper right corner. Click it. At the bottom of your settings page is an item that says “Browser connection” and there is a selection for “Always use https”. Make sure that is selected. It is NOT selected by default.

Exploit code has been released that allows people to snag your account if they have access to the data flow and you are not using https.

The guy who hacked her account is most likely under 18 and living with in his parents’ basement. That’s the 4chan demographic.

Can’t even imagine his fear now – she’s under Secret Service protection. Those guys probably view an email hack like a nuclear threat.

It doesn’t. For some reason I got the impression from one of the comments that it was a gmail account that was gotten into. If it was a hotmail account, that is run by Microsoft which we all know is the epitome of ironclad security.

She can get email and send email from/to anyone she wants with her personal account. I don’t know the character limitations on a Yahoo or gMail or any of those other providers, but I suppose if Senator Obama wanted, he could have an email address like:

To advance a suspicion, refer to a Washington Post article about Karl Rove using an RNC email account because White House emails are subject to official record keeping requirements.

Which raises the question that this hack into Gov. Palin’s yahoo account was not a harmless stunt, but was a targeted attack looking for potentially sensitive information.

All the leftist trolls attempting to advance the argument that she was doing the same thing as Karl Rove re-enforces that suspicion.

rockhauler on September 17, 2008 at 6:24 PM

First of all, anyone who has yahoo mail is an idiot, because its ridiculously easy to “hack” into and find out the password. Also, Anonymous has no political ties as an organization. Its just a bunch of kids online who have a lot of free time, and take up causes, some good, some bad.

“I very respectfully challenged him on his extreme treatment of creationism ”

I don’t fine Charles’ treatment of creationism extreme at all. It has NO place in the public schools and NO place in government, period. You learn that in church. Different religions have different creation stories. Some have none. You are free to believe what you want to believe and study as part of your religion. NOBODY of ANY religion has a right to shove their doctrine down my kids’ throat. If I allow creationism to be taught in my kids school, what is next? Scientology? Bug Worship? If you allow the teachings of one religion in there, it isn’t long before you have to let them ALL in there.

Personally I have zero tolerance for religion in the schools or anywhere in government.

And that is fine with me. But to have zero tolerance for discussion? To get the stick for discussing it? That sort of behavior is more in line with the idiots we are fighting.

Sounds like a Jim Norton bit from O&A….are you a fan Allah?

Dear Uhbama,

THIS is why presidential candidates should not use email, genius!

ErinF on September 17, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Ever heard of PGP?

Are you related to Bozo? Man, you are a very weird person!

Vince on September 17, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Maybe this is why Obama is so disturbed that McCain doesn’t use a computer. There’s nothing for him to hack.

The people who believe that it was OK or even ‘ethical’ to hack into a private email account and make the contents of the account public, are the same people who howled like stuck pigs when President Bush wanted to monitor the emails of suspected terrorist who want to do harm to this country. What a bunch of adolescent, pinhead, hypocrites.

These are the people who want to be in control of our government and all it’s resources. That ought to scare the hell out of all decent people.

Unbridled hate, no moral or ethical limits, and full control. The Clintons were just the warmup…

Mini14 on September 17, 2008 at 7:19 PM

in the hackers defense; 1. she is a woman, as long as they do not hack into a mans account, everything is ok. 2. she is a mother of five so nothing criminal about abusing her privacy, her kids do it all the time. 3. she is a republican so no worries

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Bingo!! I’m not one to buy into the -ism arguments, but when has a man politician ever had to prove he was his children’s father? When did anybody wonder whether he was a good dad while working full-time? When did any of his colleagues’ divorces mean that he had an affair which broke up the marriage? When will we see his e-mails?

What happened here is stalking. And we hear all the same arguments for why it’s not serious to stalk a woman: she was asking for it, if she was innocent nobody would want to stalk her, if she can’t take the heat she shouldn’t be in the kitchen…. blah, blah, blah.

I don’t think it was sexism that makes these people do these nutso things, but it IS sexism that they would target a woman in ways they would never disrespect a man so much to do.

The whole thing has me seeing red. Rape isn’t a sex crime; it’s a power/control crime, and these sh!t-holes are raping Sarah Palin in plain sight. If Obama stood in front of me I’d punch that sexist smirk right off his pathetic lying face.

We can’t let these people get away with this. No way, no how. If America doesn’t stand for the rule of law we deserve Obama,

–the man guilty of a federal offense, going behind the back of America’s elected president and trying to negotiate the Iraqis into leaving our soldiers stranded in Iraq without legal authorization.

–The man who couldn’t get security clearance to have Track Palin’s job right now because of his ties to unrepentant terrorists who bombed the Pentagon.

–The man who was able to buy his house because Saddam Hussein’s illegal weapons procurement agent bought the plot next door the same day via a dead-broke slumlord’s wife.

— The man who saw nothing controversial in a man who said the US created AIDS to destroy Black men, that the US deserved 9-11, and that God should damn America… and gladly submitted to that man’s “wisdom” for 20 years – including the belief that a God who doesn’t hate white men must be killed.

— The man who campaigned for his communist cousin in Kenya, who then went on to instruct his followers to commit genocide when the election didn’t go his way.

— The man who documentably lied about his support of infanticide, totally independent of the abortion issue.

The Secret Service has domain over Counterfitting, Wireless and the internet as well as protecting the executive branch.
If you hack a cell phone the SS are the ones with jurisdiction. These hackers are TOAST!

Go McCain/Palin 08′

KZnextzone on September 17, 2008 at 7:31 PM

I remember the good old days when liberals were afraid of the government intercepting communications with terrorist from over seas.

But this is OK with them.

You have to admire the principles and morals of liberals.

JoeBrooks on September 17, 2008 at 7:41 PM

And this is the reason why I don’t think the President/Vice President of the United States should use Email.

Thank you for proving the point 4chan!

JoeBrooks on September 17, 2008 at 7:44 PM

An additional thought.

From what has been published and knowing the principles of the democrats this will be like and STD. Obama supporters will now move on to email accounts of other people on the list and so on and so on. Trying to destroy the lives of anyone they can.

DVPTexFla on September 17, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Update (Ed) … video that he took of their protest at the Republican convention…

So, basically Palin got rickrolled?

Tzetzes on September 17, 2008 at 7:52 PM

lol.. 4chan are not partisan hacks. They’re kids who invented pretty much every internet meme you’ve ever used ever. This is the sort of thing that was done because they can. And when I say “they”, I mean “two guys who post there”.

triple on September 17, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Ever notice how the lefties yammer on about the right to privacy and how wrong it is to read other people’s emails and all that and then when a crime is committed against someone they don’t like…they blame the victim.

Dave the Canuck might the guy who published Palin’s phone number on line in Canada. Her family is being harassed. Her husband’s and son’s emails are made public along with phone numbers and lefties blame Palin and make excuses for the criminals.

pathetic little hypocrites. They think laws are made for other people. This tells us what kind of people we are dealing with.

‘The story behind the Palin e-mail hacking’

WHO DID IT IS REVEALED

FreeThinkerNYC on September 17, 2008 at 8:31 PM

I was shocked to see who the perpetrators of the Palin email hack were, because until reading an article in Maxim a couple months back, I’d never heard of “Anonymous”. I managed to find the article online if you’re interested:
http://www.maxim.com/TheAnonymousStormSurroundingScientology/articles/39451.aspx

The good news is that they target scientology too…

RightWinged on September 17, 2008 at 8:45 PM

Good choice! This mope is willing to trade 5 minutes of ‘fame’ (for hacking Sarah P.’s account) in return for being forced to play “Dorm Queen” in prison at Joliet. Have fun!
