Quote of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on September 17, 2008 by Allahpundit
“Given that Palin’s decision is being celebrated in some quarters, it is crucial to reaffirm the morality of aborting a fetus diagnosed with Down syndrome (or by extension, any unborn fetus)—a freedom that anti-abortion advocates seek to deny.”

Leftism is a destructive lifestyle choice which will never be proven in genetic coding. People who engage in it are not “liberal” or “progressive,” they are “leftists.” They are defined solely by the politics they choose to hold, not the condition of leftism itself.
Leftism is just the act they engage in, not who they are.
BKennedy on September 17, 2008 at 10:48 PM
One of the comments to the linked article was that “the poor are a burden to society,” so should we get out our hunting rifles and start the hunt?
Mr. Provenzo, how much do you make every year? I’m just asking….
john1schn on September 17, 2008 at 10:49 PM
It’s a moral decision…going to the store is a financial decision. Everybody knows a special needs child will “cost more” to raise. What people seem not to understand is that those decisions made by other families are simply none of their business.

Even from a pure Capitalist/Objectivist point of view, this doesn’t follow. A disabled child may be a “burden” (financially) to its family, but in a non-welfare state, which is certainly what Mr. Provenzo would advocate, the burden would end there.

I have a question… suppose a true “gay gene” were found. Suppose parents decided that they wanted to abort the child based on the finding of this gene because they considered it to be unacceptable…much as the arthors sentiments is related to that of Downs…. I wonder if the author would be as enthusiastic to condemn that child to death, or would he consider it a hate crime and force the mother to carry the child to term….

Palin has brought into the direct sunlight what is really going on in this country and that is the culture war over our children and our future. The birth of Trig is like the Cross to Dracula. Unfortunately our nation has developed a very large culture of death. You have seen it on tv, in the movies, in video games, commercials, books and of course politics with the issue of abortion. We saw a glimpse of this with the Terry Schivo case, but I do not think Americans knew how deep the death culture went or the goals of people like the person that authored this vile article. Sarah Palin and her family are the Left’s worst nightmare.

What if the mother says, “No worries, I was on my way to the abortion clinic… let him go…” does a child still not die?

They need to destroy here. Decimate her (is that what that washed up SNL actor said?) and they will stop at nothing to go after her, her family and anyone else the can. Because what she represents is so destructive to them. And they know it.
If you think what’s gone on since McCain picked her has bee a lot, you won’t believe how far it will go and how desperate the dems will get – come election day. This is bigger than just her, of course. But what she represents, and having her be the VP is, and your right of course – like a cross or holy water to dracula. I see this as only getting much worse.

Statements like those of Mr. Provenzo may seem shocking, but that may be because they were written and published. Normally, such attitudes stated quietly behind closed doors in homes, doctors’ offices, nursing care facilities, hospitals and hospices.
This attitude is not only directed at the unborn, but also toward disabled children and adults, the elderly, and those who have terminal illnesses. Those among us who are often least capable of defending ourselves can be viewed as unproductive, without potential, subnormal, and a financial burden on society. But instead of using these reasons, we rationalize abortions, “assisted suicides” and euthanasia as helping to prevent their “suffering.”
It seems to me there is an increasing acceptance of such attitudes and practices in our society.

What strikes me is that, being a teacher, I see imperfect kids every day. We do everything possible to educate and make nice little taxpayers out of all of them regardless of autism, downs, ADHD, cerebral palsy….the list is endless. The problem is that nearly everyone I work with would abort many of the students we teach. While they passionately advocate for them, they agree with this moron who is accusing Palin of immorality! Then they have the audacity to say Conservatives have no compassion. Well, in their perfect world, these kids would never live. So, being in the Belly of the Beast, I see the hypocrisy daily and it is sickening.

If I recall correctly, the fundamental crux of Objectivism is, “I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will not live for the sake of any man, nor allow any man to live for mine.” So, since I consider myself something of an Objectivist, gun to my head, am I going to let someone else’s morals — even this man’s eugenic groupthink — affect my choices? No chance.
Given the choice, between Palin and this guy, I’d say one of them is acting according to Objectivist principles, and the other is acting according to the principles of National Socialism.
