Open thread: Palin on “Hannity & Colmes”

posted at 8:40 pm on September 17, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

You’ll all be watching so let’s open a thread. Here’s the extended excerpt from the interview, thick with populist laments about “corruption” on Wall Street, in case you missed it in Headlines. Some commenters were grumbling that it’s too vague and boilerplate, but most people will be studying her less for flashes of insight than for reassurance that she has some basic sense of what she’s talking about. Grade on the curve for now; the debate with Biden is the final exam.

If the public at large is cooling to her, the crowds most assuredly are not.

The View c*nts make me ill. – FiveWays on September 17, 2008 at 10:43 PM

Easy there, soldier. Cap’n Ed says nobody uses the “c” word. Let us instead refer to t hem as the “Tizzy Tacos.”

ManlyRash on September 17, 2008 at 10:46 PM

It’s not that tough, really.

lorien1973 on September 17, 2008 at 10:42 PM

“Gov Palin, could you describe the difference between Sunni and Shia? And why should we believe that they can ever exist in any kind of long term peace?”

FiveWays on September 17, 2008 at 10:46 PM

I personally refer to that show as the “PEW” because it stinks.

bloggless on September 17, 2008 at 10:47 PM

I’m still comfortable.

winemkr on September 17, 2008 at 10:45 PM

That’s all it will take. Once people feel comfortable with Palin she wins. she doesn’t have to win them over just has to prove that she is able to take over if needed. she made a good start today on hannity and in the town hall. She is hitting her stride

Why would Greta’s husband have a press conference? Is e someone we know?

anniekc on September 17, 2008 at 10:50 PM

It is so surreal to hear Obama talk about America as if it were a third world country, meanwhile he is partying with rich ass celebrities in a mansion somewhere taking home more money in one night than 10 Americans will make in a decade.

And then he takes of the tux and starts doing his power to the people thing again.

Terrye on September 17, 2008 at 10:50 PM

“If the facts of the e-mail hackery do not conform to the Democraps theories, they must be disposed of.”

I recently watched an Evan Sayet speech. He said that he became a 9-13 Republican after he realized liberals really do mean what they say and it’s that they do hate this country and think 9-11 was our punishment. He was point was made much more cleverly but isn’t that the truth. They are such hypocrates. The rest of the world can be mad enough at us to do something like 9-11 but we’re evil at whatever we do to retaliate or even just to protect ourselves. Like FISA. Liberals are hard-wire to protect the worst criminal rights to a private e-mail and then laugh with glee when their real enemy, Sarah Palin, has her e-mail hacked. They don’t just oppose us, they hate us. How else could they rationalize their giddiness that such an awful thing happened to such a good person?

hawkdriver on September 17, 2008 at 10:51 PM

hoosiermama on September 17, 2008 at 10:55 PM

I would still like to know just where in the hell all of Obama’s money’s coming from.

Seriously. There is no way the grassroots crowd could even remotely raise this kind of doughage.

Why would Greta’s husband have a press conference? Is e someone we know?

anniekc on September 17, 2008 at 10:50 PM

Greta’s husband is a bigtime DC lawyer and Hillary backer named John Coale. He recently endoresed McCain.

rockmom on September 17, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Terrye on September 17, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Wouldn’t this violate the 5th Amendment and the concept of due process taken from the Magna Carta clear back in 1215? “No person shall be…deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” If I own the land and I drill it or mine it or make a living off of the timber, then how can the government take profits from me and give it to everyone else?

George Soros is funneling tons of money into that campaign. Can you imagine how different it would be if the media were even close to being fair in the coverage and took an honest look at Obamas,

Dealings with Rezko,

A great deal of Alaska will not ever be owned by individuals. The idea was that with a population that small, many of whom were native Alaskans a certain amount of the wealth would return to the population. They no longer have a fuel tax. They do not have a sales tax. This is what they have. And it seems like they are happy with it. If you want to go to Alaska and instigate a revolution, have at it.

but seriously, overseas. Under $200 and the donations are anonymous. It has to be.

lorien1973 on September 17, 2008 at 11:04 PM

I have been paying attention to every presidential election since Reagan, may he rest in peace, and I have never, never seen, heard, read, tasted or smelled desperation this, er…desperate.

You’re right about this. I think they are overreacting to the so-called ’swift-boating’ proposition but, as you say, there’s never been anything like this in the modern age. Back in the day, that is, the days of Jefferson, etc, there was lots of accusatory stuff going on in the papers, real nasty stuff like Jefferson fathering a black child and other bon mots (turned out to be true though, heh). But those folks didn’t have TV or the Internet and that makes it seem all so . . . well, so unseemly.

hawkdriver on September 17, 2008 at 11:03 PM

Yep.

I’ve often wondered what it would be like in some sort of parallel universe if a Sixty Minutes were to do an in-depth investigation into the Obama Camps fund raising practices and voter registration groups.

Fascinating indeed.

FiveWays on September 17, 2008 at 11:06 PM

The McCain/Palin campaign is going very well. You’d never know it from all the leftest smearing by the Bambi camp and their fifth-columnist uber left-wing media allies, but the fact is that John McCain and Sarah Palin will win this election and probably in a landslide once McCain tears Bambi a new one in the debates and Sarah tears Plugs some new plugs in their debate. I can tell by reading non-loon blogs like Hotair that the basic optimism, confidence and morale that I hear is truly sky high.

The only one recurring sour note comes from the realization that if not for the aid and comfort provided to the Bambi camp by the America-hating liberals and democrat trolls that seem to infest this blog everyone here would be celebrating our great victory in November already.

When I think of the needless discord that these trolls have caused by their twisted vile, it is very difficult for me to contain the intense anger and outrage I feel. In fact, I’m all set to volunteer as an interrogator at Guantanamo – just so long as I’m permitted to take a plane load of these trolls down there with me.

faraway on September 17, 2008 at 11:08 PM

I think they are desperate because they know deep down that Obama does not deserve to win. And that scares them. If they had a candidate that was not such a scary risky weird kind of pick, they might be a little more laid back.

I thought the ass-kissing when Olby interviewed Obama was revolting.

But I see no difference with what I saw the “hard-hitting” Hannity did with this Palin interview.

The media is out to frame her as a dunce- and they will stop at nothing.

Remember- the media doesn’t report the news; it creates and shapes the “news”.

hawkdriver on September 17, 2008 at 11:55 PM

The dems are accustomed to the abuse of power. Just look at what they’ve done to inner city black people to keep them from leaving the slums: replaced the desire to work and destroy the family with welfare, softened up on crime to allow drugs to take over, and to blame it all on rich whitey.

They’ve also sacrificed 4 million babies to abortion-on-demand so women could avoid the possibility being inconvenienced with a baby…of course the vast majority of abortion clinics are in inner city black neighborhoods…hey, let’s face it, the American Democrat party isn’t the first socialist regime to institute genocide.

Here is a quote from an article about the planned protest against Iran at the UN from the NYTs.

“Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event,” a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said on Wednesday. “Senator Clinton will therefore not be attending.”

Never billed as a partisan political event? They play politics against their fellow countrymen. I hope Jewish Americans take note of this. Liberals, Democrats have long tried to make Christians and Republicans your enemies by stereotyping us at every step. I know of no greater ally to you than Christians Conservatives.

How about Mrs. Clinton you change your mind and show your prissy little ass there anyway because that country is evil and it’s the right thing to do?

Question for Sarah: If you had Hillary in your sights could you, would you pull the trigger?

Sarah say: Yeah I’ll probably mistake her for an angry moose.

this populist rhetoric is getting slightly annoying, and making McCain/Palin somewhat unattractive. I was so amped for Sarah, but idk about all this bash wall street stuff..

blatantblue on September 18, 2008 at 12:42 AM

I just can’t get enough of Palin. Breath a fresh air.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with railing against Wall Street when those chumps drive perfectly good companies into the ground.

And, remember, the Repubs. in Congress, not just the Dems, had something to do with many problems we have financially. Although, the Fannie/Freddie mess is 85-90% the fault of Dems over the years.

Just keep going after all the money Obama received from Fred/Fan and that McCain at least tried to do something back in 2005.

Sapwolf on September 18, 2008 at 1:09 AM

Is this the voodoo economics Reagan and Bush fought over?

Democrats created Fanny/Freddy. Democrats fed Fanny/Freddy to become obese. Fanny/Freddy paid Democrats to keep the growth cycle going. Democrats legislated punitive damages to banks/s&l for NOT giving away mortgages to non-qualified buyers. Democrats want to perpetuate the obese feeding habits of Fanny/Freddy so as to perpetually bloat the Democrat coffers to simultaneously finance and activate their goal: The Downfall of America. Obama’s dream is to play Joshua’s trump to tumble down the walls and to bring in vast international investors purchasing gross amounts of American real estate, banks, investment firms and insurance institutions.

Until mortgages are paid in full, the bank owns title; and who owns the bank, and who owns the insurance company? American stock holders or China, or even Russia? Democrats want a financial crisis so as to destabilize the American population, government and America’s business and political interests internationally.

Democrat Marxists unite and revolt to make Obama’s Mean Dream to get him to his promised land of progressive desolation: TEAR DOWN EVERY WALL that constructs our Constitution and independent Free Enterprise.

This was a much more congenial and supportive environment for Palin and she responded accordingly. True, her answers were coached and she probably did hold back on what she would have liked to have said, such as when Hannity set her up to knock Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac out of the park. What we have to remember though is that she is the supporting member of this cast–she probably felt and was probably advised–that it was McCain’s role to take the lead on criticizing Freddie and Fannie–and it is. As the presidential candidate, McCain has to take the lead in setting policy statements and has to show the initiative and willingness to take the helm–notthe vice-presidential nominee. She did what she was supposed to do, batted the volleyball up to set McCain up for the smash. Now, it’s up to him.

I would still like to know just where in the hell all of Obama’s money’s coming from.

Seriously. There is no way the grassroots crowd could even remotely raise this kind of doughage.

Monday-morning quarterbacking/impressions:

The ‘friendly’ environment may have done her more harm than good; she needs to watch those, since they will always give her more time to talk. In her case, not sure if that was a good thing or not.

Personally, I thought she was too eager to talk, yet too reluctant to say anything. That’s gotta change, and soon. I look forward to her next “grilling”-style interview, since she won’t have a rat’s chance there of running too long! ;-)

Takeaways:
. relax and feel comfortable. Hannity’s trying to help you!

. “ruflle feathers” – can’t use that phrase more than twice in a single interview, ever again! Get Dennis Miller’s help on the thesaurus.

. needs a more thought-out answer in response to “what are you going to do SPECIFICALLY”. The “Change Washington” phrase was wielded defensively in response to a follow-up question from Hannity, when he was trying to *help* her – not good IMHO.

It’s okay if she or McCain don’t know precisely what they’ll do – in fact, that’s a good thing, given that one has to *analyze what’s wrong* first – but then SAY that; don’t make it look like you’re dodging the question!

“You’re hiring me for my ability to come in, analyze a problem in detail, figure out what’s wrong and *then* fix it, *not* for my psychic abilities. I won’t have the kind of access needed to really study the problem until you put John McCain and me in there so we can start focusing on it. Until then, it’s pointless for us (and that includes Obama!) to pontificate or speculate about things about which we know too little.”

Remember, I’m still the governor of Alaska. That means I’m running Alaska, solving Alaska’s problems, fixing things there. If you give me the opportunity, I’ll bring all of that problem-solving experience to Washington…”

“I have a proven record of doing just that, at multiple levels of government. Obama doesn’t have that record, so all he *can* do is pontificate… what would you rather have, a talker or a doer?”
Anyhow: Sarah had better hope as few people as possible base their first impression off of this thing. She’s much better than this, and it’s not coming through. I think maybe the campaign *should* have held her back a little more, give her some more time between interviews to compose herself. Just a .0005-dollar opinion -
