New Obama ad: McCain’s an anti-amnesty Republican racist like Rush Limbaugh
posted at 7:21 pm on September 17, 2008 by Allahpundit
Jake Tapper took it upon himself to fact-check this down to the atomic level, an effort sufficiently righteous (and gratuitous, given his pedigree) to warrant some extra traffic. So rather than blather about it myself, I’m going to send you over there for all the details. First, though, let me set you up with the transcript of this rancid piece of race-baiting shinola, which manages to smear first Limbaugh and then McCain in the course of an identity politics appeal so shameless that even the amnesty demagogues at the RNC would blush. Quote:
“They want us to forget the insults we’ve put up with, the intolerance,” the television ad’s announcer says in Spanish as a picture of Rush Limbaugh appears onscreen with quotes of him saying, “Mexicans are stupid and unqualified” and “Shut your mouth or get out.”
“They made us feel marginalized in a country we love so much,” the ad continues. “John McCain and his Republican friends have two faces. One that says lies just to get our vote and another, even worse, that continues the failed policies of George Bush that put special interests ahead of working families.”
The companion radio ad uses the same script as above and then continues:
“Don’t forget that John McCain abandoned us rather than confront the leaders of the Republican Party. Many of us were born here, and others came to work and achieve a better life for their families — not to commit crimes or drain the system like many of John McCain’s friends claim. Let’s not be fooled by political tricks from John McCain and the Republicans. Vote so they respect us. Vote for a change.”
Hey, Barry: Who’s “us”? Illegal immigrants can’t vote — not yet, anyway — so this ad clearly can’t be aimed at them. Do enlighten us as to whom the “us” here is, bearing in mind that (a) most amnesty opponents support legal immigration and (b) as Kaus often reminds us, it ain’t just nasty ol’ Republicans who think the border could do with a bit more enforcing. In fact, if you take him seriously, which you shouldn’t, The One supposedly thinks so too.
Exit question: What’s the bigger lie here, the nutroots-worthy distortions of what Limbaugh said or the suggestion that Rush Limbaugh and John McCain, of all people, are fellow travelers on the topic of immigration? Or is it rather the idea that Maverick, who two days ago reaffirmed his desire to push comprehensive immigration reform on his first day in office, has somehow “abandoned” the amnesty lobby?

He doesn’t know McCain well. The amnesty thing is why it took Sarah Palin to make many of us conservatives to warm up to McCain.

McCain’s probably already lost the Latino vote. He should ignore this. This is a trap, they want him to split the conservative base by making him commit to amnesty. If he was smart he’d avoid trying to out-amnesty Obama.

As horrible as it sounds, this is a smart thing to do on Obama’s part. If you force McCain to talk about immigration reform, you bring disunity to his support. Of course the ad is full of outright lies, yet that is expected from an Obama ad, no? It’s a weakness and they are exploiting it.

According to CIA World Factbook, more than 10% of Americans speak Spanish. That is a sizable amount of people that can vote for you. It’s politics.
There is that too, yet also it forces McCain to talk about immigration reform. As you might know, his stance on immigration isn’t too popular in conservative circles, this site included (who after the Palin choice, are now started to second look his bid). By forcing McCain to talk about it, it hurts him.

If I were Mr. Rush Limbaugh, I will definitely sue Obama for defamation and such. This guy can not get away with this.
If I were McCain, I would not even comment on immigration, period. But of the dirty tactics of Obama and his campaign for playing the race card.
I am a huge fan of Rush Limbaugh and I am Latina, Cuban American. He is far from being a racist. That ad in Spanish is basically declaring republicans to be racists and untrustworthy and uses Rush Limbaugh face because there are some “journalists” like Jorge Ramos of Univision who declared several times in interviews that Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are racists. So the commercial will be played in Spanish networks and the “journalists” would agree with the ad since they have an agenda.
jencab on September 17, 2008 at 7:48 PM
With the ad in Spanish, should we start referring to him as “Obie Juan”?
Buford Gooch on September 17, 2008 at 7:49 PM
It’s becoming very clear that the entire Obama campaign is a huge effort to save the GOP from itself. Now Obama is trying to paint McCain as a law and order conservative to win back a big chunk of his base. Honestly, I was a little confused when the Democrats nominated someone that could not win the election but it’s becoming more and more clear every day.
Buzzy on September 17, 2008 at 7:49 PM

I think all the microanalysis and speculation is missing the real point of this ad. It’s sole purpose is to remind Republicans that their nominee wants no-questions-asked amnesty. This is attempting to remind the right that McCain essentially called his base racists for not signing on to his backroom deal with Democrats. It is one of those areas where McCain is vulnerable with those he made inroads with by selecting Sarah Palin.
McCain was wrong on his amnesty plot as were many Republicans and Democrats that signed on before it was quashed by Americans of all stripes. That dynamic, IMO, hasn’t changed since last year so amnesty or immigration reform to quote the McCain/Kennedy traitors in Congress is a dead issue for the moment beyond political posturing.

RUSH: Well, now, isn’t this interesting, ladies and gentlemen. We’re working on getting the audio to this. This is from the Washington Post’s blog called The Trail today, story by Ed O’Keefe. “The Obama campaign has released new radio and TV ads in Spanish that seek to tie Sen. John McCain to anti-immigrant comments made by radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. The ads also suggest the Republican has ‘dos caras’ — ‘two faces’ — when it comes to his relations with Latino voters. The new messages, airing in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, come in response to recent Spanish-language ads by the McCain campaign that suggest Obama is responsible for the collapse of last year’s bipartisan immigration reform efforts. ‘They want us to forget the insults we’ve put up with, the intolerance,’ the television ad’s announcer says in Spanish as a picture of Rush Limbaugh appears onscreen with quotes of him saying, ‘Mexicans are stupid and unqualified’ and ‘Shut your mouth or get out.’”
I never said those things. “‘They made us feel marginalized in a country we love so much,’ the ad continues. ‘John McCain and his Republican friends have two faces.’” The audio here is probably going to be in Espanol, but this is the translation. “A picture of Rush Limbaugh appears onscreen with quotes of him saying, ‘Mexicans are stupid and unqualified’ and ‘Shut your mouth or get out.’” Never said those things. Never said those things. Anyway, we’ll get the audio of this, and when it’s ready to go, even if it is in Spanish, I want to hear how they pronounce my name in Spanish.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: All right, we have this ad in which I am misquoted and impugned, Obama’s Spanish language ad. We’re in the process of getting this translated, but we know enough about it. The ad says they want us to forget the insults we put up with, the intolerance, from the TV ad’s narrator, saying in Spanish, a picture Rush Limbaugh appears on screen with quotes of him saying “Mexicans are stupid and unqualified, shut your mouth or get out.” So here is the ad. This ad, by the way, running in Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and here it is.
(playing of Spanish language Obama ad)
Did you hear my name in there? I did not hear my name. Now, maybe it’s just a picture with my name subtitled and so forth and then the quotes, but it says they want us to forget the insults that we put up, the intolerance, as a picture of me appears on screen with quotes. Well damn it, I wanted to see how they pronounced my name. So that ad is running in Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and it’s because McCain is apparently running ads out there saying that Obama was responsible for comprehensive immigration reform falling flat. Well, you would hope it would be El Rushbo, but the Washington Post copy does not give any indication that they call me El Rushbo. But I think they should that know I call myself El Rushbo. They probably do.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: We’ve been doing a little research here, ladies and gentlemen, on this Obama Spanish language ad quoting me. It’s a TV ad that they quote me as saying a couple things, an ad running in New Mexico, Nevada, and Colorado. One of the things they quote me as saying is, “Shut your mouth or get out.” And what they’re doing in this ad is tying me to McCain, saying that the Republicans are two-faced on immigration and so forth. While McCain is out there saying he loves illegal immigrants and wants to welcome them, the real Republicans like me are saying, shut your mouth or get out. Now, what’s interesting, I never said that. Even in the heat of the amnesty battle, I never said shut your mouth or get out, even in the middle of those protests. What we have learned is that the usual suspects are behind this. The Media Matters types, the Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting types, they are the people putting together Obama ads. Obama’s new, right? Obama’s into unity, Obama’s into change, he’s using the same old Democrat Party flacks, the same hacks. The statement you’re a foreigner, shut your mouth and get out, was made, I did say it, but in a parody of Mexican immigration laws in a Morning Update April 6th of 2006.
We were making fun of Mexican immigration laws by trying to point out the stark difference between what you can do as an immigrant or illegal immigrant in Mexico versus what they can do here. Now, let me just give you some of the highlights of this. “Everybody’s making immigration proposals these days. Let me add mine to the mix. Call it the Limbaugh Laws. First, if you emigrate to our country–” Now, you have to keep in mind that when this update ran, we’re in the midst of another one of these high pressured debates of illegal immigration, and we have learned what Mexican immigration laws are. I’m simply, in this update, informing people what Mexican immigration laws are.
“Everybody’s making immigration proposals these days. Let me add mine to the mix. Call it the Limbaugh Laws. First, if you emigrate to our country you have to speak the native language. You have to be a professional or an investor. No unskilled workers allowed. Also there will be no special bilingual programs in the schools with the Limbaugh Laws, no special ballots for elections, no government business will be conducted in your language, foreigners will not have the right to vote or hold political office. If you’re in our country, you cannot be a burden to taxpayers. You are not entitled to welfare, food stamps, or other government goodies. You can come if you invest here an amount equal to $40,000 times the daily minimum wage. If not, stay home. But if you want to buy land it’s going to be restricted. No waterfront, for instance. As a foreigner, you must relinquish individual rights to the property. And another thing, you don’t have the right to protest. You’re allowed no demonstrations, no foreign flag waving, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his policies. You’re a foreigner, either shut your mouth or get out. And if you come here illegally, you’re going to jail. You think the Limbaugh Laws are harsh? Well, everyone one of these laws I just mentioned are actual laws of Mexico today. That’s how the Mexican government handles immigrants in their country, yet Mexicans come here illegally and protest in our streets. How do you say double standard in Spanish? How about no mas?”
It happens constantly when they want to link me, the left, constantly take me totally out of context, knowingly doing so. We can even go back, we could probably post on the website the Dittocam version of this Morning Update from April 6 of 2006 to prove it. Well, we don’t need to prove it, but here. I’m reciting Mexican immigration law: You’re a foreigner, shut your mouth or get out. The Obama campaign has taken “shut your mouth or get out” from this commentary and put it in an Obama ad and claiming I said that about Mexicans in this country, when I never have, plain and simple. Also, what is the other quote they have me saying? I don’t have it in front of me. Stupid and unskilled Mexicans. That was way back in 1994 from the NAFTA debate, and I was chiding Americans — remember, I was pro-NAFTA — I was chiding Americans for being afraid of losing the kind of jobs that would go to an unskilled workforce. I was referring to the stupid and unskilled workers in this country, too, as a sales pitch for NAFTA, don’t worry about these kind of jobs, they’re jobs you won’t do anyway, is what I said back in 1994. And both of these things have been taken out of context on purpose, and I’m not even sure that the first quote’s accurate ’cause this wacko from the Boston Globe, Derrick Jackson, who is an extremist leftist to the hilt has picked it up and quoted it, but that’s it. We now know that the people running Obama’s campaign ran the Clintons campaign, they’re the same bunch.

No, the preposition to does not govern the word who, but rather the indeclinable question “who is the ‘us’ here”. (The phrase is indeclinable, but the verb moves, just as in “who is he?” > “as to who he is”.) The sentence is an ellipsis for “…as to the question of who this us is…” One doesn’t ask “whom somebody is”, even there are preopositions in the vicinity!

The guy is all heart.

What’s ironic to me is that, given his molecule-thin skin and tendency to respond to any criticism with attempts to censor/silence the critic, were Obama to become POTUS, the media (which can’t possibly keep up its speak-no-evil, salad-tossing adulation for an entire 4 years) would suddenly find itself the target of Barry’s disregard for the First Amendment.
You know, were it not for the fact that he would be a horrendous POTUS, I would really enjoy watching the horror in the mass media when they realized that their magically negrilicious Annointed One had as much respect for the rights of a free press as did Joe Stalin.

I understand and am well aware that there are approximately 33 to 35 percent of our down to earth population who actually believe in good faith that Republican’s have the solutions to our nation and the world’s ills.
More power to yah..!

Does obama know that he isn’t running against bush or Limbaugh?

Well if he is going to be President, he needs new Material cause I don’t need the teleprompter, I can tell you what he is going to say before he reads it off his monitor.

I guess I’m just numb by the never-ending onslaught of vicious crap being spewed by the media and the left (but I repeat myself), so someone please point out to me where the “race-baiting” is. Is it because the ad ascribes ‘intolerance’ to McCain? Seriously.
Paul_in_NJ on September 17, 2008 at 9:22 PM
Y’know, if I were on the left, that 9% approval rating for the Democratic Congress would be something to worry about.
Let’s face it, the public isn’t too happy about either party in Washington.

…… is to too late to hate McCain and hope that Obama wins so we can try again in 4 years?
