CBS poll: Obama leads by five after trailing by two post-convention

That’s among registereds. Among likely voters, he … leads by the same margin, a bad result given that Maverick’s typically fared much better with that group. Maybe those young Obamites are tuning in and turning out after all?

Exercise caution until we have details about the sample, as some of these swings are eye-poppingly dramatic. Even so, it’s safe to say the bounce is indeed gone:

Obama’s advantage can be traced in part to independents, who favored Obama in late August, swung to McCain just after the Republican convention, and have now returned to Obama. Obama now leads McCain among independents 46 percent to 41 percent.

Obama now also leads McCain among women, a group that favored McCain by five points in polling taken just after the Republican convention, where Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin became the second woman ever to be nominated to a major party ticket.

Obama leads McCain 54 percent to 38 percent among all women. He holds a two point edge among white women, a 21 percentage point swing in Obama’s direction from one week ago.

There were enormous swings among women towards McCain in other polls last week. If these numbers are right and the pendulum’s swung back, it probably means they were drawn to Palin, gave her a look, and … didn’t like what they saw. In fact, in the CBS poll her favorables among women have dropped 11 points in a week; among Hillary voters she splits 20/48, even though 25 percent of Clintonites say they’re voting for McCain. She’s still +10 in favorables overall — but as of last week she was +22, which I guess means that Hotline poll I linked yesterday wasn’t such an outlier after all.

I’m seeing some grumbling about her answers to Hannity in the excerpt thread in Headlines, too. Exit question: Is Palinmania over?

Update: Just as I’m ready to publish this, I see they’ve posted the complete PDF. Back in a few with updates as warranted, but a quick review of the sample of registered voters weighted by party reveals a possible partial explanation for the swing. In last week’s poll, the Dem/GOP/Ind breakdown was 36.8/30.6/32.5. Today’s sample is 40.6/31.6/27.8. They’ve added more Democrats at the expense of independents — although given the trend among the latter group back towards Obama, the effect may be less dramatic than we think/hope.

Update: Biden’s net favorables are actually higher among independents than Palin’s are now, +22 to +14. On the question of whether she’s prepared to be VP, among indies she’s net -2 and among all voters -10. As for whether she’s prepared to step in for McCain as president or whether voters would be “concerned,” she’s net -28 among indies and -29 overall. Plus, there’s this. Note the trend:

Again, the sample gap is unusually wide so don’t take the overall numbers too much to heart. The indie numbers are more important.

Oh who the hell knows? I am beginning to wonder if people are screwing with polsters.

Let’s see. On every other Monday Tuesday and Friday, I like Obama. On every other day, except weekends I like McCain.

I mean really, people do not swing back and forth like this on a daily basis.

I don’t think Allah is a traitor. He just does not much care for McCain or Palin either one. Of course there is no reason to believe that any other Republican would fair any better right now, but that is beside the point.

Heh, all the fretting noodles would be whining, “Why didn’t McCain make a bold choice, something to kick start the campaign and get us all onboard. He picked a boring dude just like himself and ruined everything”!

You’re right, these numbers are damned good considering the juggernaut we face in the media and where the GOP was three weeks ago.

I can not believe people are yammering away about Palin. She was a good choice. She is the main reason McCain got that push into first at all. If he had picked Romney and not gotten that push, the same people would be whining because he did not pick Palin.

The problem is not Palin, it is just not a good year. But it ain’t over yet.

BTW, I saw this at Wikipedia {I know I know}:

Franklin Delano Raines (born January 14, 1949 in Seattle, Washington) is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Fannie Mae who served as White House budget director under President Bill Clinton. He is currently employed by Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign as an economic adviser.

The son of a Seattle janitor [1], Raines graduated from Harvard University, Harvard Law School; and Magdalen College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He served in the Carter Administration as associate director for economics and government in the Office of Management and Budget and assistant director of the White House Domestic Policy Staff from 1977 to 1979. Then he joined Lazard Freres and Co., where he worked for 11 years and became a general partner. In 1991 he became Fannie’s Mae’s Vice Chairman, a post he left in 1996 in order to join the Clinton Administration as the Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, where he served until 1998. In 1999, he returned to Fannie Mae as CEO, “the first black man to head a Fortune 500 company.”[1]

On December 21, 2004 Raines accepted what he called “early retirement” [2] from his position as CEO while U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigators continued to investigate alleged accounting irregularities. He is accused by The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO), the regulating body of Fannie Mae, of abetting widespread accounting errors, which included the shifting of losses so senior executives, such as himself, could earn large bonuses [3].

In 2006, the OFHEO announced a suit against Raines in order to recover some or all of the $50 million in payments made to Raines based on the overstated earnings [4] initially estimated to be $9 billion but have been announced as 6.3 billion.[2].

Civil charges were filed against Raines and two other former executives by the OFHEO in which the OFHEO sought $110 million in penalties and $115 million in returned bonuses from the three accused.[5] On April 18, 2008, the government announced a settlement with Raines together with J. Timothy Howard, Fannie’s former chief financial officer, and Leanne G. Spencer, Fannie’s former controller. The three executives agreed to pay fines totaling about $3 million, which will be paid by Fannie’s insurance policies. Raines also agreed to donate the proceeds from the sale of $1.8 million of his Fannie stock and to give up stock options. The stock options however have no value. Raines also gave up an estimated $5.3 million of “other benefits” said to be related to his pension and forgone bonuses.[6]

An editorial in The Wall Street Journal called it a “paltry settlement” which allowed Raines and the other two executives to “keep the bulk of their riches.” [7] In 2003 alone, Raines’s compensation was over $20 million.[3]

A statement issued by Raines said of the consent order, “is consistent with my acceptance of accountability as the leader of Fannie Mae and with my strong denial of the allegations made against me by OFHEO.”[4]

In a settlement with OFHEO and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Fannie paid a record $400 million civil fine. Fannie, which is the largest American financier and guarantor of home mortgages, also agreed to make changes in its corporate culture and accounting procedures and ways of managing risk. [8]

In June 2008 Wall Street Journal reported that Franklin Raines was one of several politicians who received below market rates loans at Countrywide Financial because the corporation considered the officeholders “FOA’s”–”Friends of Angelo” (Countrywide Chief Executive Angelo Mozilo). He received loans for over $3 million while CEO of Fannie Mae. [5] Franklin Raines is currently one of Barack Obama’s economic advisers.

Is this true? Is this Raines character really working for Obama?? Now, after all this crap?

Steady men — Drops in polls happen just like drops in market prices happen. No reason to panic. The media assault got the ticket off their maverick reformer message but in the end that will play well in the post market malaise period. Just keep your friends and neighbors aware of why free markets beat government controlled economies and peace comes from strength not weakness. This thing could turn five points after just one debate if Obama Um’s and Uh’s the viewers into stupification.

Attacking the poll because it is from CBS is childish. It’s no great surprise that Obama would get a bounce when the topic is the economy. Even without the media talking him up, it’s been drummed into people minds that Obama is strong on economics, just like McCain being strong on national security has been drummed into their minds. McCain has been ever haunted by his stupid remark about not knowing a lot about economics. He needs to find something that can cut through the bullshit narrative that Obama is some kind of economics expert. The debates will certainly afford an opportunity.

petunia on September 17, 2008 at 7:43 PM

You all realize, I hope, that given the margin of error – which no one ever seems to remember applies to each side of a head-to-head – this poll doesn’t really measure any significant different compared to the poll that just a week ago had McCain up 2. You don’t know that the same poll conducted last week might not have produced this result, and vice versa.

McCain-Palin appears to be scoring in the range of 44 – 49, and Obama-Biden is doing the same. If you did 100 polls, you’d likely get a majority of them showing a very tight race, a smaller number showing a 5 pt race, and probably 1 or 2 showing an even larger gap.

At most, the preponderance of polling suggests a closer race than we briefly had last week, perhaps a slight Obama advantage – unless you believe in a Bradley Effect, partisan over- or undersampling, or other biases.

And it doesn’t mean much if anything, since the real up-for-grabs voters will probably remain so up to the end. Very few of them are following the race with 1/100th the attention of the average reader at HotAir.

ManlyRash on September 17, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Is this true? Is this Raines character really working for Obama?? Now, after all this crap?

Yes, it’s true. Raines, along with another Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac former CEO, a guy named Johnson, I believe, are both senior economics advisers for Obama.

Obama is as corrupt as they come–$400 grand from Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac, along with all the rest of his shady deals. If he wins this election, an Obama administration will make the administrations of Grant, Hayes, and Harding look like pikers in comparison as far as corruption goes–and that’s before even talking about the other stuff he’s probably got in store for us.

Concerning the polls though, if we start worrying day to day about every single percentage point gained or lost, people are going to lose whatever hair they have left that hasn’t already turned gray–or they’re going to keel over and die of a heart attack. The best thing to do is to keep getting the word out, do what you can as you can, and above all–get out and vote on November 4. If nothing else and worst comes to worst, at least you can look yourself in the mirror and say that you did the best you could as a citizen.

Markets have this strange way of fluctuating…I know, it’s so odd…and if folks are freaking out when a low comes they need to get out of the investment ‘business’.

Palinmania dead? I think not!

Tickets to Wednesday’s town hall meeting here with presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were a hot commodity at the Kent County GOP headquarters.

A line of supporters waiting to pick up tickets — including many who had reserved them online — had snaked out the doors and down nearby Leonard Street NW since GOP officials opened up shop at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Shortly after noon, the headquarters had gone through all of the 2,000 tickets the local party had received.

The two candidates plan to stop at Grand Rapids Community College’s 3,500-seat Ford Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The town hall forum, a favorite of McCain who enjoys the back-and-forth exchange with voters, allows people in the audience to ask questions of the candidates.

This is a race to 270, and nothing more.

Do people in Mississippi and Tennessee count more than people in California and Massachussetts? They do in national samples, but they don’t in state-by-state polls. Look at the map.

If Obama is going into this thing with a five point lead, he’s as toasty toast toasted as Al Gore was in 2000.

Yes, the DEBATES will settle the score. I think Palin should recede into the background, as the press has made her radioactive. I was her biggest supporter, and still am, but she has been defined by her enemies now. It’s back On McCain to make the sale.

God help us.

Are you nuts? leave the field of battle. The left characterure of Palin can be easily destroyed by Palin herself acting Presidental and commenting on the issues. The townhall event tonight shows that. Her interview with hannity and couric will also let her show thru. It is time to counterattack not runaway and hide.

unseen on September 17, 2008 at 8:09 PM

it will come down to the debate

in the end John will be in the hot seat serving his country to the best of his ability

Been there before

A decorated war hero vs a Ivy league community organizer…

not worried

EricPWJohnson on September 17, 2008 at 8:09 PM

Remember these little diddies …..

Exit polling indicates Gore will take Florida. (2000)
Exit polling indicates Kerry will win easily. (2004)

Polls serve one purpose. It’s a weapon used by the media to influence the stupid people who are too lazy to research the candidates and make an intelligent decision on their own.

fogw on September 17, 2008 at 8:10 PM

No matter what the truth behind the numbers, let’s remember that McCain got a bounce at a minimum. Obama didn’t even get a bump in his “historic” nominiation that included that acceptance speech of Obama- live at the Barakopolis.

highhopes on September 17, 2008 at 8:13 PM

these polls go up and down. i never know when or what to believe.

venicesurfer on September 17, 2008 at 8:13 PM

McCain/Palin are not only running against Obama. They are also running against the MSM, Hollywood, intellectual elitists on the left & the right, potential massive voter fraud by ACORN, and single issue conservatives.

So, fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

What is helpful is that Americans have historically low approval for and trust in the MSM & Congress that is mismanaged by Democrats.

Notice how the annoying troll ’semloh’ writes, “humour”

So, it’s either pretentious or Canadian

if the former–semi-morons are often pretentious

if the latter–Canadians are…..not Americans, with no direct stake in our elections or our future

Calm down you punks…the debates are coming and Barry “eh ahhh ehahem ehh” Hussein will stumble.

The troll known as MB4?

FiveWays on September 17, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Actually semloh, when I look at it I think how much better things were before that silly Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took over.

Terrye on September 17, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Actually the meltdown in the economy has been building for many years now and we still may be only seeing the tip of the Iceberg. As far as Pelosi and Reid go, they haven’t done much of anything, one way or the other, but just sit there like talking potted plants. All and all it could be argued on most things that would be a good thing as most of the time politicians, from either party, just find the wrong problem and apply the wrong solution.

semloh on September 17, 2008 at 8:21 PM

McCain gave up a lot of ground by wasting time on the victimhood game. Big, big mistake.

DaveS on September 17, 2008 at 8:23 PM

CBS poll on election days in 2000 had Gore by 4 and in 2004 had Kerry by 4. Rasmussen is the poll to watch. He has been the only one to be correct the past four election cycles.

Jdripper on September 17, 2008 at 8:23 PM

I think Bush warned about it and tried to change it and so did McCain.

yeah sure thing Hollow-head I mean Hollowpoint.

Sarah Palin was a great idea for while. The bounce is gone and she will look even dumber in the debates than she did when that patsy empty suit from abc made her look dumb.

she will be a drag, ultimately. especially as the economic chaos gets worse and she doesnt know jack sh*t about finance or the economy except “uh, we are going to clean up wall street”.

yeah, great lady…go get em lady…you betcha!!

trailboss on September 17, 2008 at 8:36 PM

In 2003 Bush did try to put Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under the control of the Treasury Department because there were problems starting even then. Congressional Democrats stopped the move because needless to say Bush was wrong, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were ok fine {just like social security no doubt} and Bush just wanted to hurt poor people. Or something.

This started back in the 90’s. It has been a long time coming.
