CBS poll: Obama leads by five after trailing by two post-convention

Share on Facebook | regular view

That’s among registereds. Among likely voters, he … leads by the same margin, a bad result given that Maverick’s typically fared much better with that group. Maybe those young Obamites are tuning in and turning out after all?

Exercise caution until we have details about the sample, as some of these swings are eye-poppingly dramatic. Even so, it’s safe to say the bounce is indeed gone:

Obama’s advantage can be traced in part to independents, who favored Obama in late August, swung to McCain just after the Republican convention, and have now returned to Obama. Obama now leads McCain among independents 46 percent to 41 percent.

Obama now also leads McCain among women, a group that favored McCain by five points in polling taken just after the Republican convention, where Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin became the second woman ever to be nominated to a major party ticket.

Obama leads McCain 54 percent to 38 percent among all women. He holds a two point edge among white women, a 21 percentage point swing in Obama’s direction from one week ago.

There were enormous swings among women towards McCain in other polls last week. If these numbers are right and the pendulum’s swung back, it probably means they were drawn to Palin, gave her a look, and … didn’t like what they saw. In fact, in the CBS poll her favorables among women have dropped 11 points in a week; among Hillary voters she splits 20/48, even though 25 percent of Clintonites say they’re voting for McCain. She’s still +10 in favorables overall — but as of last week she was +22, which I guess means that Hotline poll I linked yesterday wasn’t such an outlier after all.

I’m seeing some grumbling about her answers to Hannity in the excerpt thread in Headlines, too. Exit question: Is Palinmania over?

Update: Just as I’m ready to publish this, I see they’ve posted the complete PDF. Back in a few with updates as warranted, but a quick review of the sample of registered voters weighted by party reveals a possible partial explanation for the swing. In last week’s poll, the Dem/GOP/Ind breakdown was 36.8/30.6/32.5. Today’s sample is 40.6/31.6/27.8. They’ve added more Democrats at the expense of independents — although given the trend among the latter group back towards Obama, the effect may be less dramatic than we think/hope.

Update: Biden’s net favorables are actually higher among independents than Palin’s are now, +22 to +14. On the question of whether she’s prepared to be VP, among indies she’s net -2 and among all voters -10. As for whether she’s prepared to step in for McCain as president or whether voters would be “concerned,” she’s net -28 among indies and -29 overall. Plus, there’s this. Note the trend:

Again, the sample gap is unusually wide so don’t take the overall numbers too much to heart. The indie numbers are more important.

Blowback

That’s honestly what I expected when all the polls had McCain dead even or ahead…not that he would fade but that the media would begin playing with the sample to show The One back in front. If he’s behind if/when he loses then it’s obvious he was rejected by America.

If he’s “ahead” but still loses, “BRADLEY EFFECT! RACISM!” and all the rest of the liberal template.

Expect a lot more of this people.

So CBS skewed its sampling to include more Dems and fewer Inds. Is anyone surprised that Obama leads by 5 in the poll?

amerpundit on September 17, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Besides, I don’t take much from media polls, whether they be CBS, CNN, FOX, whatever.

I’ll stick to lightly watching the more stable and reputable polls and take them with a grain of salt, then we can all look back on November 5th and parse them to pieces.

Maybe the incredible nonstop barrage of attacks on McCain and Palin are working. But Rasmussen still has it 48-47 McCain, and I find them more reliable an indicator.

JammieWearingFool on September 17, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Worry about the state polls, not the national polls. But yeah, it’s going to get ugly from here for us. Palin’s luster has faded, and now we’re stuck with a hollow Obama-type figure in her, and the media is having a field day with her record and personal life and everything else. Bush is too unpopular for us to win this this year, sadly.

If these numbers are right and the pendulum’s swung back, it probably means they were drawn to Palin, gave her a look, and … didn’t like what they saw.

Exactly, Team McCain is terrible… they should have looked at who came to his side who was new and tweaked the policy to appeal and keep them… They could have used Palin to appeal to new voters(women, libertarian types, social welfare catholic, etc) instead they used her traditionally…. which is to just prop up the presidential nominee and parrot his agenda. In affect, they ruined her. They are getting their arse handed to them on health care, tweak that(I have ideas yarrrr@mail.com )… They could have tweaked policy and inserted that into her stump speeches(controlled environment) to lively that up while she was really getting preped for the interviews and debates… her strengths are touting and gathering up support… that should tell Team McCain how good(or how well packaged) their policies are… she doesn’t have the background to pull a McCain which is to say “Put me in there and let me go reform ‘things’” without being specific…

the trend is worrying. However, none of this is life threatening. the debates are still to come, pushback from McCai/Palin are still to come. McCain’s comment on fundementally sound sounded to much like Bush I think and Mccain’s camp went over board on the sexist crap. Both can be overcome. McCain is doing ok. Do not forget the Bradley effect. You have a 45-45 race right now with abot 3-4% voting third party. So that leaves about 6-75 still undecided. they will vote on issues.

Every time women friends of mine outside of politics see her, they feel like they’re being baited. (And some of them are Republicans or “hockey moms.”)…The bait is that 90 percent of what she says totally resonates with these women … but these women feel that the 10 percent of what Palin says that they disagree with should account for a lot more than 10 percent.”

But now I have more . . . experience with Governor Palin. And pretty much everything she has said or done since her appearance on the national stage – beginning with her acceptance speech – has soured me on her. It’s decreasingly plausible to me that she’s who I thought she was when she was nominated. Based on her performance on the campaign trail so far, she’s a shallow and demagogic politician. And if, on the off chance, that’s not who she is, then it’s instructive that the McCain campaign seems to be eager to have her play this particular character.

http://theamericanscene.com/2008/09/17/songs-of-innocence-dirges-of-experience

I saw this coming a week and a half ago when everybody was running high and I’ve been spamming emails out to the McCain campaign and a bunch of bloggers that her narrative is going to take a nosedive… she can’t run like McCain… she has to offer something fresh of substance…

Rasmussen uses essentially the same party affiliation breakdown as CBS:

For polling data released during the week of September 14-20, 2008, the targets are 38.7% Democratic, 33.6% Republican, and 27.7% unaffiliated. For the previous week, the targets were 39.7% Democrat, 32.1% Republican, and 28.2% unaffiliated.

John McCain attracting 48% of the vote while Barack Obama earns 47%

Rasmussen Markets data gives McCain a 48.6 % chance of victory while expectations for Obama are at 50.4 %. These figures are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants.

I’m not overly concerned with this poll, but the trends are going against McCain right now. I think his “victim week” is to blame. McCain needs to go on the attack again.

It was very effective, and had Obama flailing around like an idiot. Why did he stop?

While I still think this could be a outlier or a biased poll I do think it’s cause for concern.

But Polls at this point in the election showed John Kerry and Al Gore ahead. Basically this far out of an election the poll numbers ALWAYS lean toward Democrats.

I actually wish there was somewhere where that information could be assessed. Like what were the polls like in 2000 and in 2004. I seem to remember it was one day Kerry was ahead and the next day it was Bush.

I was truly hoping that enough people were like me and could see the problems that Obama brings and there would be a mandate for McCain. I’m so sick of the stolen the election mentality.

But hey before Palin we would have thought these numbers were pretty good, right?

CBS is the 57th state in Obama land!

This was warned via El Rushbo a week ago. Yes, some of the PUMA’s are going to look at her views and say, “Thanks, but no thanks to pro-life.” Not to mention the press could very well turn Palinmania into what was being reported prior to her entrance, and that was Obama fatigue. Just them hammering her 24/7 could hurt her by constantly Palin this and Palin that.

Rush said they would do this to get us down and defeatist and screaming the sky is falling. I do agree McCain has been adless the last 2 days in hard hitting THE MANCHILD. Everybody needs to chill, and work hard on your Congressional elections. Congress is SOOOO important this election. We are going to need them no matter who gets elected.

So, buck up folks!

Relax.

No, I’m digging a hole in my backyard, jumping in and pulling the dirt over myself until the polls show a Mac advantage because I guess that’s what we are supposed to do: start pining for the good ol’ days when Romney and Huck were going to save the day.

I’m still a palinista… I just have no trust in the people around her…

Sorry if I offended you.

Looks like McCain’ Plain surge has rather conked out. Of course his saying that America’s economic fundamentals were strong surly didn’t help.

Looks like people had better put all that champagne back in the fridge at least for now.

Now there’s a plan I could stick with!

petunia on September 17, 2008 at 7:18 PM

In last week’s poll, the Dem/GOP/Ind breakdown was 36.8/30.6/32.5. Today’s sample is 40.6/31.6/27.8.

This confirms my immediate thought when I saw the headline. I trust CBS about as much as I do Ahmadinejad.

Almost every poll has a higher Dem sample and that is almost never reported.

I don’t pay any attention to them at all. I pay attention to the people around me.

Move along, you got a post in.

Wow, I guess identity politics and affirmative action does suck. – Roger Waters on September 17, 2008 at 7:08 PM

So do you.

Pull your head out of your ass and maybe you’ll see more clearly.

ManlyRash on September 17, 2008 at 7:15 PM

What the hell is up your ass, jumping on people like that?
