Bounce gone: Obama back up by two over McCain in Gallup

posted at 2:05 pm on September 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

There’s no proof that it’s tied to the market downturn, although Gallup has a hunch. If they’re right, I wonder if we haven’t already seen Maverick peak. Gulp.

The good news? Looks like America isn’t racist today. Whew!

Today’s report includes two days of interviewing conducted after reports of the collapse of Wall Street financial institutions and changes in the stock market began to dominate the news on Monday. Gallup Poll Daily tracking data show that in each of these individual days (Monday and Tuesday) consumer ratings of the U.S. economy have become more negative. Similarly, in each of these individual days’ interviewing, Obama has led McCain in election tracking. There is thus a correlation between the bad financial news and Obama’s gains, although the data do not allow us to conclude definitively that there is a causal connection between the two. Throughout the campaign, Obama has generally held an edge over McCain when voters are asked who could best handle the U.S. economy, although McCain gained on the economic dimension in polling conducted immediately after the GOP convention.

It’s The One’s first lead since the day after the GOP convention, although McCain still has a (steadily dwindling) edge in Rasmussen. Both polls are within the margin of error. There’s a CBS poll out tonight that should delve into subcurrents; I’m curious to see if the ‘Cuda is, in fact, becoming a bit of an anchor. Current pessimism level: Six, a three-point drop from last week, indicating resignation to defeat — but not by disastrous, party-smashing margins!

Update: Curiouser and curiouser: Hotline’s tracking poll still has Obama in front, but his lead on the economy issue dropped six points overnight.

Blowback

McCain/Palin will win.

Even if Obama were 20 points ahead (where history tells us he should be right now) I still wouldn’t be worried.

Obama is a radical liberal. The media loves him, the people aren’t quite so enamored. Also, Obama is quite agitated right now so he’s just making things up left and right…it will catch up to him.

Obama finally has a punching bag (economy/wall st) to hit rather shadow boxing hope-n-change.

McCain needs to get back to body blows that will wear Obama out in the later rounds.

moxie_neanderthal on September 17, 2008 at 2:45 PM

I think you people are missing things. Obama counterattacked. He came out firing. It has been no stop Palin bashing for two weeks. McCain made a couple of mistakes, Wall street has tanked 700pts this week. And yet Obama is only up 2 pts. Basically a tied election. Obama should be up by more. McCain will counterattack. I think this is the Gibson bounce.

Also do not forget the Bradley effect. some pollsters think it could be as high as 4-6% in the polls. Bottom line as long as the polls are in the margin of error, it can be assumed that McCain is at least tied. We have 45 days to go 4 debates. We have Biden on our side. The terror attack today will remind people of the threat.

This is not over yet.

The battleground states of OH, PA, MI are still very close.

No not done yet by a long shot. I have felt a shift in momentuem since last Friday. Obama quit attaking Palin and started going after McCain. McCain will fight back.

upinak on September 17, 2008 at 2:49 PM

I said that earlier and I say it again. People are nervous about the financial situation. They don’t like Obama very much, they blame Bush for the situation too, they don’t know if they can trust McCain on this issue (thank you very much Carly Fiorina) so you have Obama up 2 points. Lets see if it holds, goes up or it levels again.
McCain camp made a few mistakes too.
First they tried to milk too much the Palin effect while the media was good enough on riasing doubts about her; second they didn’t take any advantage of the Charlie Rangle situation and didn’t start on pounding on economy and energy independence last week. Now its catch up time one again. But not all is doomed. Look at the Yemeni situation. That can play well for McCain. We’ll live and see.

I’m curious to see if the ‘Cuda is, in fact, becoming a bit of an anchor.

As folks begin to see the “real” barracuda and the novelty wears off, it is no surprise the McCain/Palin team is dropping in the polls.

As an Indy, I am repulsed each time I see the photo of Polar Queen holding up the bloody moose she killed. Granted we’re seeing less of this now. The extreme righties need to realize that not all voters are drawn to this “vision”. She also supported the killing of wolves by plane. The video of a wolf being shot from a plane and rolling as he was dying in the blooding snow, was sickening. That Polar Queen and other hunters just look the other way at the inherent cruelties of hunting disgusts me.

Imagine how most folks (unless hunters) feel when they see the photos at the Anchorage Daily News of the motherless baby caribou, one still trying to nurse from its decomposing mother!, after the massacring of over 100 caribou!

Such a hunting FINATIC as barracuda mostly only helps with the far right “choir”. It’s revolving to the rest of us and thus McCain/Palin are bound to loose votes from both Indys and animal-lovers because of this. Check out the pics of the calves–be sure to click “more” under the small photo to see both enlarged photos of the babies. If seeing this and thinking about it DOES NOT affect you, then I feel very sorry for you.

Druge says Obama has a 2 min. ad buy on the economy. Where are the McCain ads. They should write themselves! Obama was in the tank for Fannie and Freddie and the Dems killed all the reforms Reps tried to get passed.

McCain cannot let the Dems fool people into thinking that the Dems didn’t cause this! A

And Obama’s part in all this needs exposed!

petunia on September 17, 2008 at 2:52 PM

We need some ads, folks, right now. Hang Johnson and Raines and all the FNMA/FHLMC money, and Lehman’s bundlers, and the Countrywide-tainted Senate leadership, around Obama’s neck, right now.

This should have come out within 24h of the “lobbyists” ad from Obama. That was Sunday night, at least in PA. Now it’s even more important.

You do not LIVE in Alaska so you have no clue as to what you are talking about.

Palin’s not running an Alaskan campaign any more. Your plea towards some kind of cultural moral relativity may not play too well in places where McCain-Palin needs to win votes, and where people, as you said, do not understand the “need” to hunt like that. It’s unlikely that they will come around to your position by election day, especially with the emotionally charged pictures the opposition will deploy. I fear that the “Palin: Hunter Queen” persona is an electorally damaging one for conservatives to play up.

In times such as these I always turn to the Maha Rushie. El Rushbo has said Obama has to be up by 10 or more to win and he also warned us that if these polls showed McCain down not to be surprised and it could be with some pollsters a way to get us down.

I agree with the ones here that have said McCain has not fought back hard enough in the past two days. Rush today was screaming about McCain not hitting back on issues where he should be able to hammer THE ONE’S little head. Here is hoping things change ASAP!

freeus on September 17, 2008 at 3:15 PM

I don’t know anyone who cares that Palin hunts. Worrying about abusing animals by hunting them when the vast majority of those who hunt do it for food is definitely an elitist position. Everyone I know hunts and eats what they kill. It may make liberals feel better to buy their meat in a supermarket pre-packaged, so they can pretend they are more enlightened because they didn’t kill the animal themselves, but it still has to be killed before it reaches the store. At least when you hunt your own food you know the kill was quick and as painless as the hunter could make it. When you get the pre-packaged stuff you have no idea how that animal was treated.

…the photos at the Anchorage Daily News of the motherless baby caribou, one still trying to nurse from its decomposing mother….

Shelby

…oh, boo-hooooooooooo….

…boo-bloody-hoo for Bambi and Thumper and all your wildwood pals…

…they’re herbivores…they’re prey.

Politically motivated human interest photos in newspapers aside, humans are only marginal predators in the wild, even in Alaska. The local carnivores outstrip them, where such animals exist…and they usually take Bambi before they take Bambi’s mommy because they don’t run as fast…or they take Bambi’s granny…or Bambi’s lawyer or his agent or his yoga coach or his organic chef (hopefully)….

…and this is if they’re lucky….

If they don’t run into the obliging redneck like me, rifle in hand, or Mr. Canis lupus out for some fastfood before a movie, Mom Nature takes over…and, as all of us who’ve spent more than a summer shower’s time outside can tell you — and as the folks down the road from me in Galveston can attest — Momma Nature is a bitch-on-wheels.

If even the slightest little thing is wrong with ol’ Bambi, one little defect or handicap, and soulful liquid eyes or not the hammer comes down like…well…a hammer.

If Bambi survives long enough to grow anters and get a drivers license, they may again be visited by Momma N. when she forgets to whack enough back last spring, and also stop by Sam’s Club to buy enough vegetation in bulk, comrade Bambi becomes the decomposing caribou in the weepy human interest pic…

…he could throw caution to the winds and begin browsing next to the highway and become your next hood ornament, or an uninvited passenger in your front seat via the windshield….

…the hunting pics were shown to portray Sarah as something different. When a bozo urban journalist, obviously visiting Wasilla and maybe Alaska for the first time to consult with what I’m sure he thought were the local “color”, he quoted one as saying that she could field dress a moose…and then went about telling his readings what the term field dressing meant, knowing that his public on the other end of the wire service had no earthly idea.

Alaska is a different place than, say, Berkley…Sarah having a big-ass pelt in her office or standing next to a dead quadraped is a sign of that.

That was sort of the point. Clearer now, spunky?

Puritan1648 on September 17, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Oh, and on the hunting thing: God (or god, if you’re Allah)put Moose here for us to eat. Only 2.5% of the US population is vegetarian. Hunters are far less barbaric than the folks that make your fried chicken.

As far as this recent round goes, we watched McCain go nowhere for some time while Senator Obama rose like a rocket untouched. Then came the “celebrity” ad. Wham! You would have thought someone had shown pictures of Senator Obama killing puppies.

That whole thing reminded me of fishing offshore… watch the fish take the bait, calmly get the rod out of the holder, put on the fighting belt, get situated and then BAM! Set the hook. Senator Obama has only been hit with the celebrity ad… not much else. I think those with the better OODA loop have the line back in the water and are currently watching the fish take the bait.

Think about all the places Senator Obama can be hit vs what you have seen happen so far. There are 7 weeks left. Why open your kimono now? Let him rise. Knock him down a bit. Repeat process until the proper time comes to hit him hard. I also don’t think the Democrats stand to be the only ones with an October surprise.

Senator Kerry last week assailed President Bush for doing nothing to extend the now-expired federal ban on assault weapons. In the days afterward, his campaign began trotting out a group of Sportsmen for Kerry and proposed a “Sportsmen’s Bill of Rights.” The idea, of course, was to appeal to the great majority that favors a weapons ban, without giving offense to all the fine, upstanding Americans the senator is proud to call his fellow hunters.

I just love libs who put animals ahead of people. My family actually hunts to put food on the table. To you that may be cruel to my family that is surviving. I have moved away from the area my family lives in and hunt rarely now, but believe me should the need arise I will kill to eat. I work for a corporation that gets these nutty calls from animal activists groups, especially PETA. I actually had to listen to one in a meeting where one of these PETA nuts calld to see if we tested on animals. We gave our standard reply and she launched into a tirade and actually stated that she refused to give her cancer sticken husband the cancer drugs he needed because they were tested on animals. Now that is cruelty and insane. Be kind to animals but let your husband die so an animal can live.
Now that’s what I call compassion. Not.

This hunting stuff is coming up in the context of Palin’s candidacy, and outside groups have already started running ads about it. Whether or not a single incident was legal or illegal is not really the issue here. It all comes back to practices (legal ones) that Palin supported but many Americans who do not “understand” Alaskan issues will find barbaric. I’m talking, of course, about the aerial hunting stuff, which Shelby mentioned specifically in his/her post.

Again, have you read the book? Scully is opposed to non-essential sport hunting and so-called “farm hunting.” He draws a moral distinction between that type of hunting and those who hunt for food.

I’m not overly concerned. I still have McCain pegged at 53% when all is said and done. And yes, there are still racist people in this country. Blacks favor Obama in huge numbers simply because he is black. Many whites will never vote for him because he is black. The question is how many of them are there? I still feel that a good chunk of Hillary Clinton supporters were the bitter hicks that Obama sneered at because he knows many of those people will never vote for him.

There’s no proof that it’s tied to the market downturn, although Gallup has a hunch.

I live in South Florida… come on down and let me anchor off Boca Grande Pass and let you take a swim with some of the local sea life and move down the food chain a couple of notches. Ask Mr. Hammerhead or Mr. Bull Shark if he is being cruel? He is not. He is doing what he (she) was designed by God/nature to do, just as humans that eat what they kill. I have cats that have grown from kittens…. how cute. Now they kill things. Sometimes they eat them… sometimes they do it just for fun. Are we clear Dr. Doolittle?

Shelby on September 17, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I don’t know why are we talking about the fact that Sarah Palin is a hunter. Who cares. Whom ever eats chicken breasts know for sure that it didn’t grow like this on trees. So yes, animals are killed in order for us to eat. If you don’t like it you can ve a vegetarian or a vegan. The problem here is the financial situation and the very weak reaction of McCain camp to it.

clemycali on September 17, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I think it has more to do with the fact that McCain went off the offensive this week, and off-message. He did well when he was forcing Obama to respond to him.

Typhonsentra on September 17, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Considering the unrelentingly negative non-stop coverage the McCain campaign has been getting, it would be more surprising if it didn’t affect the polls. It would be nice to think that McCain/Palin can transcend the media entirely, but it’s a little overly optimistic — especially when a collective media assault is combined with an astroturfing juggernaut in full swing. I’ve lost count of the sleazy emails that have been forwarded along to me by my liberal acquaintances.

As I stated above, hunting is done ALSO FOR STATUS AND TROPHIES! And if man were not killing off natural predators, such as the wolves in Alaska, there would not be over-population of the “lower” animals.

Shelby on September 17, 2008 at 3:46 PM

I care more about God’s creation, MAN. I don’t agree with cruelty to animals for the sake of it. But when you don’t live in an area where it is essential to hunt you don’t know what you are talking about. The idea that there are just millions of people out there killing animals for the thrill of it is insane. There are many types of cruelty committed against human beings every hour of every day. They rank higher for me. You can exhaust all your energy defending animals I will defend the people that are abused everyday. Maybe if you used your energy helping the people in need you might be able to head off some of the small number of people who hurt animals. Ever think of that. Because if people are hurting animals for the thrill of it odds are probably pretty good they were mistreated at some point. Or you could just go start a march to prevent pharmaceuticals from developing life saving drugs for people so you can prevent them from harming animals. The hell with the people. By the way an Independent is just a weak minded person who can’t make a concise decision. That’s worse than a lib, they may be wrong but at least they know what they believe in.

I’m curious to see if the ‘Cuda is, in fact, becoming a bit of an anchor.

A ‘Cuda that rises quickly, just as all the other things of nature that are born and grow rapidly, cannot have roots and ramifications; the first stiff breeze blows them over.

How can one “make a full of themselves”?

And yes, if you wear furs simply because you like to, then you are a merciless caveman/woman. I’m sure fur-bearing animals love giving their skins to you by means of being hung alive (does less harm to the pelt) electrocuted in the anus, etc! Yeah, you’re a real sweetie…

I once saw that dumbazz Pam Anderson on the Bill Maher show and she actually said Man is the only animal that hunts for sport. She should come to my house and sit on the porch while my cat torments the hell out of a mouse before killing it then walks away from it. I guess that wasn’t sport. But for the life of me if it wasn’t I can’t figure out what it was cause he didn’t eat it.
