I’ve always suspected Dave may be an U.S. citizen who went Canadian during the Viet Nam war, if you know what I mean. He may have fallen in love with the Pierre Trudeau mindset/cult and decided to stay to enjoy the efficient national health benefits plus the Human Rights Commission. I could be wrong.

Obama is talking about this because he has nothing else to talk about; he is flailing in this campaign because he has never had to run a serious campaign against a serious opponent with a real record that far outclasses his own on every single issue you can name. He is throwing crap at the wall now to try to make something stick to John McCain, because after 25 years in Congress people know McCain and trust him as an honest man and corruption fighter, while we do not know Barack Obama and have no reason to trust him.

Currently, your country can’t figure out the right level of regulation in its financial sector, so it affects stock markets around the world, so all of our investments are fu*cked up by your fu*k ups. That’s one big reason why the rest of the world knows a hell of a lot more about what’s happening in the US than Americans know about what’s happening anywhere out here.

With the long-term future of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac likely in the hands of the next president, both presidential candidates embraced Treasury’s short-term measures to rescue the companies as a necessary step but criticized the need for government intervention.

“We need to keep people in their homes, but we can’t allow this to turn into a bailout of Wall Street speculators,” Sen. John McCain said Saturday at a rally in Albuquerque, N.M. The Republican nominee has told voters anxious over job losses and foreclosures that he wouldn’t allow the companies to fail.

Sen. Barack Obama said in an interview aired Sunday that intervention was necessary to “prevent a long-term, much bigger crisis.”

Republicans have long pushed for a structural overhaul of Fannie and Freddie. By contrast, Democrats have warned against making major changes until the companies were stabilized. The companies have traditionally had stronger backing from Democrats, who support their mission of bolstering affordable housing and for years have fended off calls for greater oversight.

Democrats received 56% of some $1.6 million in contributions from the two companies in the current election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Sen. Obama has received $105,849 from donors tied to the companies since he ran for the senate four years ago, making him the third-largest recipient in Congress among the top 25 listed in a recent report by the Center for Responsive Politics, which examined contributions dating to 1989.

Sen. McCain wasn’t listed in the report, and proponents of overhaul say lobbyists have tried unsuccessfully to win him over.

“There were quite a few lobbyists retained by Fannie and Freddie who tried to influence Sen. McCain, but they never were able to get their hooks into him,” said Anne Canfield, who heads the Consumer Mortgage Coalition, a lending trade group that has advocated for overhaul of the government-sponsored enterprises.

Sen. McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, told voters at a Colorado Springs, Colo., rally that Sen. McCain would make the housing giants “smaller and smarter.” The Arizona senator has argued for nationalizing and downsizing the mortgage-finance companies before breaking up and selling off the companies.

The McCain campaign has tried to raise doubts about Sen. Obama’s ability to challenge his party on delivering changes.

“Certainly it is part of the difficulty the Obama campaign faces, because he never has taken a tough road against his party or his political backers…and that’s what this would require,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, an economic adviser to Sen. McCain.

It’s also interesting how Palin’s amazing feat of cutting earmarks here or turning down earmarks there still left an enormous pile of earmarks that she and her lobbyists sought. How does McCain rationalize that?

Nobody is earmark free, so it’s ridiculous for people to paint halos over some candidates’ heads and devil horns on others’. It’s the system you’ve all put up with so spend your energy on changing it, not bitching about who’s worse.
