Video: Worst national anthem evah
posted at 9:29 pm on September 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
The Standard says it’s a close second behind Roseanne’s, but that’s apples and oranges. This one’s not off-key, it’s just … way, way, way too much. Note to Kat DeLuna: “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not just a vehicle to show off one’s range. Cover a Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera song if you want to do that.
And for the record, this is no worse than third on the list of all-time stinker renditions. Good lord.

I like that one, but Marvin Gaye was great, no matter what he sang.
reaganaut on September 16, 2008 at 10:09 PM
No doubt – that was embarrasing. I cringed when I heard it.
t.ferg on September 16, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Kat made it sound like a cat on a hot tin
roof,it begins to rain,and a cat feverishly,
is scratching the roof for some traction,as
the cats nails are screeching down the roof
in its attempt to save its life,as in a
butter knife is scraping a plate!!
And,meanwhile “Lady Liberty” the statue on
Ellis Island is trying to cover her ears,me
thinks!!!!!!!!!!:)

I’ve always thought Lt. Frank Drebin’s rendition was one of the more entertaining turns of SSB.

I agree completely. Their politics are screwy, but this rendition of the national anthem is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard in my life. Definitely in the top three.

Holy crap…ever heard of trying to do too much. I was expecting Simon Cowell to chime in and tell her she sucked.

Given that Barry is headed for Streisand’s place for a $28K per plate fundraiser, i thought it was timely to post McCain’s rendition of Babs’ tunes here in this thread..

This is the Star-Spangled Banner, our country’s National Anthem. Sing the lyrics as written by Francis Scott Key. Sing the lyrics in accordance with the original music as composed by John Stafford Smith. What is so hard about this? These “artists” need to get it through their heads: singing the Star-Spangled Banner is not about them.

Whitney Houston at the 1991 Super Bowl 26, best ever
carbon_footprint on September 16, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Actually the whole thing was tacky and offensive. Not only Kat DeLuna’s annoying voice and weird gestures but also the fireworks at “the bombs bursting in air” and the pom-pom American flag. None of it was respectful or appropriate. The audience was right to boo.

Whitney Houston showed off her vocal range with her lip synched performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” before Super Bowl XXV, and it’s probably one of the best versions ever.
Different country and different anthem, but the worst version of any anthem might very well be what this lounge singer did to “O Canada” before a CFL game in Vegas:

YYZ on September 16, 2008 at 10:31 PM
She sounds like she’s simultaneously singing the national anthem and trying to hold back a fart.

Indeed. It is the safest route to go.

This is one of the neatest renditions I have seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPDl4-4VqnA
But basically if you just want to hear the song sung well at a sporting event, you need to watch NASCAR.
SlimyBill on September 16, 2008 at 10:32 PM
I honestly don’t get this one. She sings it pretty well, although it’s the finger wagging I could do without.

Posted by a mindless troll who refuses to question or be critical of anything McCain has ever said or did in all his time in Congress in an attempt to shut down legitimate conservative concerns with McCain. Understand that “wise men” often bear false witness.

Best I ever heard was at Pocono this year. I couldn’t find a real good version of but I did find this one. The anthem starts about 2:17 into the video. I believe the singer was Robert Polillo.

Blame it on Whitney Houston… She started this Diva mess.
At least Houston did a good job. This one… not so much.
Gartrip on September 16, 2008 at 10:53 PM
As it should be. I’m the honest voice while you are the blind partisan troll. You’ve not once been critical of McCain and I’m going to love nailing you to the wall for your silence now when McCain enacts such things as his amnesty scheme. Why because you weren’t honest enough or man enough to seek out the best candidate. You just went for “electabilty.” You may not be a patriot but I DO question your patriotism (i.e. love of country) when you steadfastly refuse to question the positions of those seeking high office and fall back to defending them on the basis of party affiliation.
So, in short, my voice and opinion will always be of more value than your mindless propaganda, unthinking loyalties, and unwillingness to question this nations leaders so long as they are of your party. You, friend, are what is wrong with America. If you can live with that, friend, so can I but don’t think I don’t know precisely who and what you are.

You are so right! I miss the days when the national anthem was sung straight up, without all the added touches. Amd, you’re not supposed to repeat some of the words in the last line, either!
I could be wrong, but I thought I heard some booing from the crowd after she was finished singing.
TeeDee on September 16, 2008 at 10:58 PM
That was neat, man, simple and clean. Thanks.
SlimyBill on September 16, 2008 at 10:59 PM
That’s what a lot of people just don’t get. I’ve heard my share of the anthem done live…you go to a ball game and hear a local 4th grade choir do it the way it’s supposed to be done…they hit the ‘Land of the FREE’ part at the end, the crowd roars…40,000 or 400…kinda puts a lump in yer throat…
BigWyo on September 16, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Nah, you can’t be for real. No one is this f*ked up.
wise_man on September 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
The weird thing is that if you can sing the National Anthem well, you have good range, by definition. There’s no need to add frills ‘n stuff. It’s a hard song.

Did the Cactus Cuties grow up to be the Dixie Chicks? Both those vids were great! Thanks for the links.
Maybe I’ve gotten old and hard of hearing, and maybe I remember what it was like to be young and hip and incredibly foolish and self-centered, but somehow I don’t think her rendition was all that bad. Certainly it was bad enough. However, I have heard worse.
mushroom on September 16, 2008 at 11:34 PM
I wonder why folks have forgotten about the grave flaws like amnesty, McCain-Feingold, Gang of 14, etc. Folks somehow think that McCain is the lesser of two evils. I wonder, how would bringing in 10 million new citizens, former illegal aliens, be a lesser of two evils? Frankly, both options suck. For this reason, people need to focus on the forgotten Congressional races. Only Congress has the power to prevent the affirmation of the judges that both McCain and Obama support, for example.
Send_Me on September 16, 2008 at 11:39 PM
I was happy to hear the boos at the end… I can respect someone with some talent giving their own version of the song, but that was outrageously bad.

For those who study philosophy, you’ll probably notice this ad hominem fallacy. If you’re unaware as to the meaning of an ad hominem fallacy:
ad hom•i•nem (hŏm’ə-něm’, -nəm) adj. Appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or reason
Send_Me on September 17, 2008 at 12:26 AM
I’ve been a professional singer for 20 years. In the business musicians call that rendition, and forgive the phrase, ‘vocal masturbation.’ Singing only to please oneself.
And not even well. Flat several times in the beginning then she totally lost the key when she went up into Mariah-sphere.
I’m impressed with the Cowboys fans (hard to type as a die-hard Washington Redskin fan). They knew horrendous when they heard it.
divamomvicki on September 17, 2008 at 12:28 AM
not the worst I’ve heard but pretty bad… what I don’t understand is why these singers pass up the chance to sing a rousing rendetion of a wonderful song… the words when spoken clearly and given a chance to affect are some of the most endearing ever written…
such lines as…
bring me to tears when ever sung… especially by those who know how to reflect the depth of the words…
and to such men who shall lay down life for honor and country…
Kaptain Amerika on September 17, 2008 at 12:33 AM

aikidoka on September 17, 2008 at 12:38 AM
Agreed. I thought it was inspired. Proof positive you don’t need to sing it straight for it to be wonderful. You just have to know what the hell you’re doing.
capitalist piglet on September 17, 2008 at 12:42 AM
I don’t even count Roseanne’s butchering of the Anthem since she is no singer and should never have been invited to sing it in the first place. I place the blame on the people who thought that would be a good idea.
I rank this version by Kat DeLuna as one of the worst by a supposed singer I have ever heard. I am so proud of the Texas Stadium crowd for booing – some may consider that bad taste, but it was an absolutely disgusting performance.
The only thing that makes me more angry is when the performer chooses to change the lyrics. Natalie Cole did this when she substituted a line from, I think, “America the Beautiful”. I love that song too, but it is not the anthem.
The other performer that made me angry was Anastasia (I think that’s how it’s spelled). She performed prior to an MLB all star game and I think she just didn’t know the words – maybe she purposely changed them. Instead of “and the rocket’s red glare…” she sang “and the rocket’s gave glare”; instead of “gave proof through the night” she sang “gave truth through the night”. I was on a discussion forum later that evening and people were defending her and saying they had heard it performed that way before…
My opinion – if you are asked to perform the Anthem at a public event, do it as written. If you want to show off and “make it your own” with ghetto yodeling or whatever, do that at your own concert. Leave my National Anthem alone.

Crapola! I made it about halfway thru the first verse. I love my country to much to finish listening to this abberation.
Wingo on September 17, 2008 at 1:22 AM
In my ideal world, one of the players would’ve yanked the mike from her and let the crowd sing it.
I don’t have video of it, but one of the worst renditions I’ve ever heard was by a lady who thought she was operatically trained but not really. She sang at an annual church event I go to for 5 years straight. One year she kicked her shoes off. Another year she recited something beforehand about how the stripes represent Jesus’ stripes for us and the stars represent the descendants of Abraham. Pretty much no one liked it except the guy in charge.

Nope Nope Nope Nope!
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will ever outdue the night Roseanne Barr Arnold Whatever Name She was Going By Then almost single-handily destroyed the National Anthem with a rendition that still makes your teeth ache from grinding down on them so hard. I mean, we are talking brutal here, as in I would rather hear the sound of a head-on crash between a truck carrying empty steel milk cans with a truck carrying live geese in the middle of the Holland Tunnel brutal!

Just after 9/11 a bud sent me a link to a video of the WWE/WWF ring annoucer singing the Star Spangled Banner. Not sure of the lady’s name, but she is the ONLY person who should ever be allowed to sing your national anthem.
I am not even from the States and she had a lump in my throat.
Jim708 on September 17, 2008 at 8:25 AM
The vocal gymnastics don’t bother me as bad as the fact that she is flat on notes (“see” 4 notes in particularly) her voice breaks, she’s out of key on a lot of the high notes, her phrasing sucks so badly the song doesn’t scan.
For all her potential talent, she doesn’t know jack about music, breath control, voice control, taste, class, tempo, phrasing, timing and that’s just some of her problems.
docweasel on September 17, 2008 at 8:49 AM
Doesn’t matter. If BHO gets in, I am sure, in addition to a new presidential seal, he will have a new anthem, too.
flyoverland on September 17, 2008 at 9:02 AM
OMG.
‘Strangled Kat’ DeLuna should really stick to the classics.
That wasn’t so much talentless suckage as much as it was marginal talent reaching far beyond it’s grasp.
I see about a dozen events a day kick off their festivities with the SSB. Most of those people (largely amateurs) blow this false talent out of the water.
Mr Purple on September 17, 2008 at 9:04 AM
I agree with the other posters who say…
1. Give her a break. (And I am an Eagles fan)
2. Whitney Houston had the best rendition.
3. Monday’s performance was actually rather good until the end.
Of course number three is applicable to Donovan McNabb too. His fourth quarter performance has people out there believing that the “none and done” Cowboys are somehow a Super Bowl contender, even though they won’t win a playoff game this year either. Eagles might not win the division, but they will go farther than any NFC East team in the playoffs, which is what counts.

The song, in and of itself, is powerful. If she put her heart into it, I say she did what she should have.
If it doesn’t suit your taste, that’s fine — but I think this shows her pride in her country, not in herself.
Perhaps people assume the virtue in others they find in themselves. ;)
