Sebelius: Say, did you know Republicans are racists? Update: AP or Miami Herald tries cleaning up Sebelius’ comments

posted at 6:40 pm on September 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Hmmm.  Didn’t Barack Obama just get done scolding John McCain over “dishonorable” attacks?  Maybe he should save his criticisms for his surrogates, except that they’re parroting The One in his own baseless smears.  In Iowa today, Kathleen Sebelius continued the Obama tradition of calling Republicans racists, and the other Obama tradition of producing absolutely no evidence for the allegation:

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius accused Republicans on Tuesday of injecting race into the presidential campaign, arguing that they are using “code language” to convince Midwesterners that Democrat Barack Obama is different from them.

“Have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African-American?” Sebelius asked with sarcasm. “(Republicans) are not going to go lightly into the darkness.”

Sebelius was responding to a question from the audience at the Iowa City Public Library about the tenacity of Democrats and whether they would fight for victory as hard as Republicans in the closing weeks of the election.

She did not elaborate on her comment.

Well, they don’t usually elaborate, because they don’t have any evidence of it.  It’s a smear, and has been shown thus by the Washington Post and ABC News during the summer.  And while Obama whines about McCain’s supposed lies, the purveyor of Hope and Change has been throwing mud at McCain ever since locking up the nomination.

There is nothing more dishonorable in politics than calling opponents “racists” without evidence.  It not only smears people who have tried to keep race out of the election, it is a McCarthyite tactic to silence critics.  It reveals in another fashion Obama’s Nixonian tendencies in reacting to any sort of criticism at all — shouting it down, smearing journalists doing their jobs, and branding any dissent from the One’s revealed wisdom as based on hate rather than genuine opposition to statist policies.

Kathleen Sebelius has decided to enable that kind of McCarthyism and mudslinging, without having the courage to provide an iota of evidence for it.  Perhaps Obama should have chosen her for a running mate; they appear to have the same perspective and philosophy, as well as sharing an ethical standard so low as to be invisible to the naked eye.

Update: The AP or the Miami Herald has edited this article to remove the “(Republicans) will not go lightly into the darkness” quote.  Fortunately, I saved a cached version of the article here.  It now reads:

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday that a belief among some voters that Democrat Barack Obama is different from them is hindering his campaign for president.

Asked at a brown-bag lunch at the local library why the campaign is neck-and-neck, Sebelius said “code language” raising doubts about Obama is invalid because his life experience “has a lot more to do with me and my family.”

“I think that the notion that, ‘By the way, have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African American?’ I think that is for a number of people difficult,” Sebelius said. “I think we need to talk about the fact that that is a real issue.”

Why did this story get changed?  Did someone at the AP or Herald decide that it made the smear tactics just too obvious?  Clearly, someone got second thoughts about including that quote from Sebelius, and either the AP or the Herald need to explain their sanitation of Sebelius’ remarks.

If liberals are a race, then I am a racist…

Wow, you just know Sebelius had to pull about 4 yards of granny panties out of her rear end the day they announced Palin for the VP spot.

Obama sold out poor Black people in Chicago to his slumlord friend Tony Rezko, that was born in Syria.

Tony Rezko could not pay to heat the buildings but he could pay to finance Obama’s campaigns, and Obama took the bribes and Hush money as campaign cash with a big smile!

This woman is from Kansas right? Well most of the people who live in that state are Republicans. I wonder if they knew {until now} how much their Governor despises them?

Terrye on September 16, 2008 at 7:58 PM

Cap’n Ed, I question your invokation of the term “McCarthyism”.

My understanding of Joe McCarthy is that he is reputed to have found (as much as he was empowered to find) a “guilt through association” and not that he played, as we would understand it, “the red card”.

McCarthy’s targets were men whom he thought were communists and/or communist sympathizers. He didn’t use “the red card” to smear people he disagreed with for other, unrelated reasons.

McCarthy may have been an unbalanced zealot, but he was not an unprincipled smear artist. He believed in every word that came out of his mouth.

Comparing Kathleen Sebelius to Joe McCarthy on this point actually does McCarthy a disservice, imho.

Tuning Spork on September 16, 2008 at 7:58 PM

Sibelius must have been getting around Iowa today, spreading this racist meme far and wide, because if one clicks on the link Ed provides she is quoted as saying this:

“I think that the notion that, ‘By the way, have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African American?’ I think that is for a number of people difficult,” Sebelius said. “I think we need to talk about the fact that that is a real issue.”

But Ed quotes her as having said this:

“Have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African-American?” Sebelius asked with sarcasm. “(Republicans) are not going to go lightly into the darkness.”

Or has the AP modified it’s original story?

I think I am beginning to decipher some of these texts after pouring over hundreds of newspaper articles and campaign documents. Once I have the list properly assembled, I will be sure to disseminate the information through the VRWCN (Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy Network).

Elitist: Uppity
Community Organizer: Black
Woman: Political tool to steal Democratic Votes
Left-Wing: Pinko commie baby killers
Arrogant: Uppity
Inexperienced: Uppity
Republican: Racist
Celebrity: Uppity

Am I on the right track here?

Sadly, all of these have been put forth as “code words” by Democrats. The problem is that they can’t find issues with statements made by the right and they know there has to be something wrong with them, right? So there HAS to be deeper meaning to the words.

covel on September 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

So, Sebelius and Fiorina have both said stupid things that both ended up hurting who they support, probably. Then add in Pelousy and Hillary Clinton to the A-List female politicians.

Thank God for Sarah Palin, some might come to the conclusion that women and politics really don’t mix well, between the Queen Bee Syndrome of Pelousy and Clinton and the airheadedness of campaign surrogates.

Counterpoint: Obama is a mindless, inarticulate putz, Biden has verbal diarrhea, Ghramnesty is a multiculturalist clod, and Reid is a cadaverous blight.

Maybe we just need smarter politicians.

Quote 1:

“Have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African-American?” Sebelius asked with sarcasm. “(Republicans) are not going to go lightly into the darkness.”

Quote 2:

“I think that the notion that, ‘By the way, have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African American?’ I think that is for a number of people difficult,” Sebelius said.

The difference between the AP’s treatment of her quotes in these two instances is STUNNING. the comparison shows the depth of AP’s dishonesty. The heavily excerpted version in Quote 1 bears almost no relation to the fuller excerpt in Quote 2.

The first version makes the little bit of quote appear to demonstrate out-and-out racism on the part of “Republicans” talking in the dreaded “secret code.” The second version seems only to say that some people have not yet come to terms with an African-American president.

Disgusting dishonesty on AP’s part – whatever Sebelius’ true intent was.

(As for myself: I am not quite “ready” for the first out-and-out Communist-American in the White House.)

BDavis on September 16, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Astounding, the lack of even a veneer of coverage in the media. Obama’s ties to subversive radicals run deep:

…Barack Obama is an integral part of a web of radical activists, whose roots go back to a clandestine Communist Party network in Hawaii centering upon his erstwhile mentor the late black poet Frank Marshall Davis, an agent of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA).

…Obama was introduced to Davis by his grandfather Stanley Dunham, who considered Davis a ‘strong black male figure’ and thought he exerted a ‘positive’ and significant influence over Obama during his high school years. In her view, Davis was just such a black role model for the young Obama and gave him ‘a sense of believing that change can happen’ through ‘living in a diverse world’.

The problem was that Davis believed ‘change’ could best be achieved through Stalinism.

It appears that Davis continued to be a mentor to Obama into young manhood. In Dreams from my Father, Obama relates how, just before he went to college at 18, he was warned by ‘Frank’ not to forget his ‘people’ and not to ‘start believing what they tell you about equal opportunity and the American way and all that shit’.

Despite this close early relationship with a role model and mentor who happened to be a Communist agitator and radical black activist, such matters might nevertheless have raised few eyebrows if Obama’s politics had matured with age. But he appears to have continued along this same radical trajectory – as his 20-year membership of the black power-promoting Trinity United Church of Christ would suggest. A dossier by Cliff Kincaid documents how in 1995 Senator Alice Palmer presented Barack Obama as her chosen successor and protege to a group of extreme left-wingers: William Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn and Dr Quentin Young. These were to play a significant role in Obama’s life and career.

Yup, Obama is different from them.

They didn’t get to go to Harvard, instead attending lesser colleges and earning lesser degrees. They served their country rather than just thinking about serving it. Their house is probably worth less than the garden land Michelle and Barack purchased from Mr. Rezko. Their jobs are real ones, not sinecures produced by a party machine.

And, last but not least, they belong to a party whose platform opposed slavery as strongly as Obama’s party supported it, and whose take on personal rights and personal responsibility has not wavered one iota through the years, even as Obama’s party has not wavered in its belief that certain groups deserve the work of other groups.

Definitely different.

The Democrat Party — via the Great Society — destroyed the black family, herded them into housing projects, and told them they don’t have a chance in hell of succeeding.

The prominent liberal visionaries of the 19th and 20th centuries openly advocated the elimination of all non-white races through abortion and birth control.

And these leftist bastards call us the racists.

Democrats have a good thing going because they write the narrative; they own the media. But history won’t forget; they will be judged harshly when this con game is over. There will be justice.

Don’t forget that Obama and his mouthpieces did this same thing to Hillary Clinton too. It worked for them in the Democrat primaries because the Dems get all guilty about this kind of thing. What they don’t understand is that the other 75% of the country that aren’t self-loathers just think this kind of crap is offensive. So trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice isn’t going to work and hence the AP has to edit the report to soften the damage.

I wonder if the subtlety of that comment was lost on some?

Ok, here comes the perfunctory, “don’t accept the premise post, I’ve been refraining from ’till now. So let me list them as they have come up repeatedly in posts and commentary here and else where since the Palin nomination.

Sexism

McCarthyism

Swift-boating

Nixonian

This is basic linguistics. Because we’ve lost control of the language, in order to engage in the current political short hand that allows us the modicum of brevity essential to rapid communication, we are forced to pay tacit homage to the very false premises established by our opponents, destructive to our cause which in the larger sense we seek to combat.

Yes this racist meme is an outrage, but then you don’t need me to say that nor is this I suppose, which I never-the-less find myself powerless to with hold from any more, anything new to most of you.

There, I said it. Now perhaps I can get some sleep.

Great to see you csd, you sort of disappeared for a bit there. I thought maybe Crazy Barry’s thugs got to you.

You know what… I am getting really sick of this. It’s to the point were I can’t read a newspaper, turn on the TV or read a website without some belligerent imbecile calling me a racist. This issue has gone from less than subtle race baiting to thinly veiled accusations to open and blatant finger-pointing on more fronts than I can even count anymore.

I am fed up and furious at the constant accusations that I and anyone else who has the sense enough to see Obama for the worthless, lying, manipulative and corrupt traitor that he is having to deal with being label a racist.

I have never been so infuriated about politics and the media in my entire life. Jack Cafferty’s latest piece of trash that CNN has the audacity to label journalist commentary has pushed me to the point that Cafferty better pray that he never comes within arms reach of me.

I and countless others have emailed, written, called, boycotted and utilized every other available means to combat this repulsive and unabashed slander, but it get’s worse every day.

Who’s got any other ideas on what we can do? CNN clearly has no further consideration for it’s ratings or advertising, since all have dropped like stones while they continue to push their mindless and repulsive crusade further and further beyond any resemblance of respect or credibility.

So, what can we do next? This BS needs to end and it needs to end now.

I don’t see it ending before the election…or after, for that matter. I think the MSM is so committed to getting Obama elected, they just don’t care anymore who knows it or reports it. If they can just get the One in the oval office, they won’t even have to fix the damage they’ve done to their own credibility. The Fairness Doctrine will destroy talk radio and other competing media, so their narrative won’t face any further challenge. But, what if “He” loses? I just don’t think they can even conceive of such a possibility. They have invested everything in Obama and they set the agenda. How can he lose?

Maybe we can contract Bill Ayres to go blow up CNN? Somebody go tell Billy the Terrorist that CNN thinks that Annenburg was a farce and the Weathermen were a bunch of fairies.

“Have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African-American?”
Correct.

The AP or the Miami Herald has edited this article to remove the “(Republicans) will not go lightly into the darkness” quote.

I noticed that they changed the headline also from: “Sebelius says GOP using racial code language” to “Sebelius: ‘Code language’ hindering Obama campaign”. Completely removing any reference to race. Such a clear attempt by the AP and the Miami Herald to protect democrats. This sham newspaper is just an arm of the DNC. Can you imagine if a republican had said something like this? Would republicans get similar treatment? Would the AP or the Miami Herald scrub mud off of any republican this way? We all know the answer.

Limbaugh said as much at the very beginning of Palin’s candidacy. She presents a very real threat to them and they have no option other than destroying her. They will expend every resource, utter every slander, print and broadcast every libel to accomplish this – even at the cost of their own credibility and ratings. If she wins, they lose. Simple as that. The fighting will get worse over the next four weeks – especially if McCain and Palin do well in the debates.

This is a Battle of the Bulge writ large in American electoral politics – their last, desperate attempt to achieve victory, and long as they are desperate, they will do anything – ANYTHING – to win.

Who’s got any other ideas on what we can do? This BS needs to end and it needs to end now.

Inner Patton says: Stop whining and act like a soldier. *smack* This is where the training, the discipline and the conservative mindset pay off, Damiano. This is where the real fighting begins. Man up, return to your post and continue firing. Dismissed.

Democrat politicians are just worthless, stupid people. When their weak and semi-literate policy debacles aren’t popular, they rely on liberal fairy tales like the one about the evil white people (except for white Democrats, of course).

Sibelius is a clown act who has done nothing but take from this nation. And she’s endorsing another clown act in Barack Obama, who will do nothing but hobble our nation.

A clown is a clown, no matter what the color of the skin beneath the greasepaint.

Fun!! Katherine clearly means the following:

1. BO’s America is a place of darkness.
2. BO himself is of the darkness.
3. Republicans will unwillingly bring light into the darkness.

Thanks, Katherine! You’ve made my day!
