I don’t know of a more disgraceful Republican fundraising effort.

I first discovered this scam last year when the California small-business I was working for received a phone call.

They use B2B telemarketing to flatter small business owners with honorary chairmanship of an imaginary “Business Advisory Council” — in exchange for money of course.

Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole is the leader of that shenanigan.

This is the kind of things that make all Republicans look bad.

I have a feeling there are quite a few creatively fictionalized expenses — such as people who two or three years ago spoke freely about how they didn’t like his tactics in Chicago for instance, but today support him, as a paid campaign “advisor” or “organizer.”

It’s got to be a drain.

The NRSC, NRCC, and RNC do not have to compete with the McCain campaign for the final 60 days, making their fundraising efforts a lot less complicated.

Moreover, because McCain took public financing, he will be relying much more on joint efforts with the RNC and state parties (which has to support other candidates also). I would bet they have budgeted pure McCain money vs. McCain/RNC money to get the most bang for the buck in states where there are hot Senate races.

I seem to remember media complaints that the US government was giving a smaller fraction of GDP to victims of the tsunami disaster, leaving out that the private donations of US citizens swamp everything else.

Possibly the main failing of Liberals (or what we call liberals now) is an over dependence on theory, and a lack of respect for the tried and true.

Trust me, I’ve been there. A good definition of a neo-con might well be someone who has watched his favorite theory blow up in his face.
