Political charity stays at home
posted at 11:05 am on September 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Despite the announcement of a record $66 million haul in August, the Barack Obama campaign continues to worry about its funding. Politico reports that Team Obama rebuffed a request from Harry Reid for Obama to share the wealth, literally, to assist other Democrats running for the Senate. The cost of raising money has diluted their position against John McCain, and with the DNC essentially failing under Howard Dean, they can’t afford to part with a penny:
Earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made a personal appeal to Barack Obama: Help me grow the Democrats’ Senate majority by sharing some of the $77 million you’ve got in the bank.
Obama’s campaign said no.
Although Democratic insiders say a better deal could still come, the Obama campaign so far has agreed only to let Senate Democrats use Obama’s name — as well as those of his wife and running mate — in mail and online fundraising pitches. The campaign has planned no joint fundraising events with House or Senate Democrats, and insiders say none is likely to be held before Election Day.
In rejecting a direct request from his Senate leader, Obama has put a fine point on the financial pressures he’s feeling as the presidential race turns toward the fall.
Reid and Chuck Schumer, chair of the DSCC, hoped to get $10 million from Obama to assist their efforts against Republicans. The DSCC has done a better job than its Republican counterpart at fundraising, although the NRSC has begun to close the gap over the summer. However, the Republicans will likely spend a lot of money on presidential GOTV efforts in states like Minnesota, Colorado, and New Hampshire where the DSCC hoped to take currently-held Republican seats, and need a boost to counter the GOP.
The NRSC, NRCC, and RNC do not have to compete with the McCain campaign for the final 60 days, making their fundraising efforts a lot less complicated. Not so for their Democratic counterparts; Team Obama will hit the same donors for funds, and their requests will take precedence. The other committees will have to live off the leftovers, and with the generic Congressional ballot narrowing in every major poll, Democrats are at real risk of losing the House, and have almost no hope of significant expansion of their majority in the Senate.
Obama told the Saddleback Forum that the major failing of America was a lack of charity, a statement that shows a fundamental lack of understanding of his own nation. He then selected a skinflint for a running mate, and now gives a poor demonstration of sharing among his own colleagues. Beyond that, though, this shows how badly Obama miscalculated when he betrayed his pledge and became the first major-party candidate since Watergate to opt out of the public-financing system and its spending limits. His selfishness will cost Democrats down the ticket, and perhaps himself an election if he can’t raise $100 million a month on his own.

A few more of those $28.5K-per-person fund-raisers with Babs singing to wealthy lefties ought to fix Osama Obama right up!
When he’s president, he won’t need Reid or Schumer. Or Congress. He’ll just run it all….

Doesn’t exactly seem “fair” to me, the “rich” guy failing to give to the less fortunate.

Tsk, tsk p40. You’ve got it all wrong. It’s not share their wealth, it’s share ours….
ScottG on September 16, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Obama is simply redistributing the wealth of his cult followers and supporters back to him . . . isn’t that consistent with his Marxist philosophy.

What happened to the “We” in “We are what we have been waiting for!”? I guess there is an “I” in team MANCHILD! LOL!

McCain should use this to his advantage. Surely the all knowing deity ‘The One’ would not opt out of public financing unless the economy was fundamentally sound. To do so would show a level of incompetence that is breathtaking stupid.
meci on September 16, 2008 at 11:13 AM
What a team player. But hey, they do get to use his, his wife’s, and his running mate’s names. Do they get to use Bill Ayers’, Jeramiah Wright’s, and Tony Rezko’s names as well?

He will let them use his picture and name. How charitable. At this point, I doubt many of them want their name or picture along side his.

When push comes to shove, Obama can’t even reach across rows of seats on his own side of the aisle.
I get an even bigger chuckle out of the appraisal of Obama when he was in the Illinois Senate — aloof; kind of a loner; didn’t work much with others.

Come on Harry. It’s all about The One.

If Obama takes down the Democrats running for election or re-election in the HoR & Senate, he may become my BFF.
PappaMac on September 16, 2008 at 11:15 AM
I had been saying Bambi is choking the DNC coffers, tactically bucking Public Money may have made sense for the ONE but collectively it was/is a strategic mistake for their agenda.

Because of greed, they may now lose both congress and the oval office…fitting end to a remarkable year of politics.
Hey, maybe Palin will let Pelosi use her tanning bed…

If he loses and the Democrats fortunes in Congress are affected negatively, what will that do to his future political aspirations?
Bryan Suits (radio host kfi) called it, he’ll be John Kerry.

Sorta makes you wonder what those blue-dogs out there are thinking, how would they be treated by an Obamno presidency?

What a crappy campaign this guy is running.
This is like going into a football game having paid off the refs (the media) and having all of the highest paid players.
And still coach Barry is behind going into the fourth quarter.
Since this is the only thing Barry’s managed, looks like he falls short again.
NoDonkey on September 16, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I HOPE things do not CHANGE for his campaign…at least not for the better.

Fuquay Steve on September 16, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I thought Barry’s sound judgment was a valid substitute for his lack of experience, and his management of the campaign was evidence of executive ability.

If he loses, he’s done forever. This is his one and only shot. By now, the donks realize how badly they miscalculated the impact of race in the general campaign, and that’s all he’s got to sell.

Ironic coming from a man that gave an average of 2% of his income to charity over the past five years — most of which went to build a palace for Reverend (hate whitey) Wright, donchathink’?

Obama believes from each according to their abilities to each according to HIS needs. And since the ONE’s needs trumps everyone else’s it is no surprise that he’s holding HIS money tightly and not providing any to Congress. Also, given his nearly 80 percent burn rate on the monies he collects, (with no apparent positive effect on his poll numbers) that appears to be one of his few wise moves this election cycle.
I also have to wonder why there are no stories on how Obama is in the pocket of all those fat cats donating to his campaign. I mean if a Republican forswore public financing and pulled in nearly half a billion dollars, well the stories would just be writing themselves. This is another avenue for campaign ads that should be aired in the final months. Just how much has the Obamanation hocked his soul and to whom?

With all the cash he blows through each month…The vulgar amounts of money he is spending on leather ingraved airplane seats, his own presidential logo, the waste of money catering to his ego is obscene. How about that huge portrait of him in one of his campaign offices. How much is he spending on all of this? Not to mention the American Flags that he so casually discarded after his grand aceptance speach.
His spending habits terrify me and I surf the Red Triangle.

Yes, a lack of charity from his “not the best qualified” VP candidate Joe Biden.

I gotta figure he’d run the country the same way if given the chance: No matter how much he raised taxes, it would never be enough.

Possibly the main failing of Liberals (or what we call liberals now) is an over dependence on theory, and a lack of respect for the tried and true.
Trust me, I’ve been there. A good definition of a neo-con might well be someone who has watched his favorite theory blow up in his face.

Democrats don’t believe in charitable giving. Just look at the Obamas’ and the Bidens’ tax returns. These are some of the most selfish SOB’s on the planet.

Is Obama REALLY spending all that money on the campaign?
I don’t see how unless he is giving every democrat voter $500 to vote for him.
Elizabetty on September 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Biden ponied up less than 1/4 of 1% in charitable cash! Nice guy! Liberals are going down hard and nasty this fall! Muahahahahahah!

When Obama says “America,” do you think he means “Americans” collectively…or the federal government of the United States of America?
I seem to remember media complaints that the US government was giving a smaller fraction of GDP to victims of the tsunami disaster, leaving out that the private donations of US citizens swamp everything else.

I’ve always believed that there is no one greedier or more selfish than a Marxist and Barry is doing nothing to prove me wrong.

What do you expect? His campaign even refused to give Girl Scouts some bumper stickers.
Damiano on September 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Moreover, because McCain took public financing, he will be relying much more on joint efforts with the RNC and state parties (which has to support other candidates also). I would bet they have budgeted pure McCain money vs. McCain/RNC money to get the most bang for the buck in states where there are hot Senate races.

This is a campaign commercial ready to happen.
“Obama recently refused to help his fellow Democrat millionaires in the Senate. [Picture of the usual suspects.] With Obama’s half-brother living in a hut in Kenya [picture of same], should they really be surprised?”
[Obama clip from Saddleback on Americans' lack of charity]; [clip of the lovely and gracious Michelle Obama saying Americans are just mean]; [Obama clip reciting liberals' favorite Bible verse about the least of our brothers].
misterpeasea on September 16, 2008 at 12:20 PM
I have a feeling there are quite a few creatively fictionalized expenses — such as people who two or three years ago spoke freely about how they didn’t like his tactics in Chicago for instance, but today support him, as a paid campaign “advisor” or “organizer.”
It’s got to be a drain.

Funny you should mention the NRCC.
I don’t know of a more disgraceful Republican fundraising effort.
I first discovered this scam last year when the California small-business I was working for received a phone call.
They use B2B telemarketing to flatter small business owners with honorary chairmanship of an imaginary “Business Advisory Council” — in exchange for money of course.
Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole is the leader of that shenanigan.
This is the kind of things that make all Republicans look bad.
Idiots.
