Palin fires back in Troopergate, releases memos showing insubordination

Sarah Palin issued a response to the Troopergate investigation yesterday by releasing internal memoranda that show Walt Monegan got fired for insubordination on budget matters and not because of his refusal to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law.  Monegan went behind Palin’s back to attempt to revive a project Palin had vetoed, which “stunned” the Office of Management and Budget Director.  On another occasion, Monegan held a press conference with Hollis French to dissent from Palin’s budget priorities — the same Hollis French pushing the ethics complaint against Palin:

Walt Monegan lost his job as public safety director because he resisted Gov. Sarah Palin’s budget policies and showed “outright insubordination,” say papers the governor’s lawyer filed Monday with the state Personnel Board.

It was Palin’s strongest effort yet to snuff allegations she sacked Monegan because he refused to fire a state trooper involved in an ugly divorce with the governor’s sister.

Along with the papers filed Monday were a slew of e-mails from the governor’s office purporting to show Monegan’s “rogue mentality” as a member of Palin’s Cabinet.

In one message, the governor’s budget director, Karen Rehfeld, wrote that she was “stunned and amazed” that Monegan appeared to be working with a powerful state legislator, Anchorage Republican Rep. Kevin Meyer, to seek funding for a project Palin previously had vetoed.

According to the papers filed by Palin’s legal team, that was not the only instance of insubordination from Monegan:

  • 12/9/07: Monegan holds a press conference with Hollis French to push his own budget plan.
  • 1/29/08: Palin’s staffers have to rework their procedures to keep Monegan from bypassing normal channels for budget requests.
  • February 2008: Monegan publicly releases a letter he wrote to Palin supporting a project she vetoed.
  • June 26, 2008: Monegan bypassed the governor’s office entirely and contacted Alaska’s Congressional delegation to gain funding for a project.

From this presentation, it looks like Monegan had decided from the start to be a loose cannon in the Palin administration.  The wonder of this isn’t that he got fired — it’s how he managed to hang onto his job as long as he did.  The response calls Monegan’s trip to Washington the “final straw”, and it’s not difficult to see why.   Monegan even admitted it in his valedictory e-mail to his colleagues, saying that he “had waited too long outside her door for her to believe that I supported her.”  Nor did Monegan file an ethics complaint, as the law would have required him to do, if he felt his termination violated state ethics laws.  (Palin filed the complaint herself to argue the case.)

As the filing states, Monegan served as a political appointee, at the pleasure of the Governor.  Obviously, Monegan didn’t act to support Palin’s budget initiatives, often acting in opposition to them.  In anyone’s administration, that will result in dismissal.  Monegan kicked himself out of the job through his own acts.

Mike Gravel was right. This will backfire on the frothy left wing due to their ignorance of this and most other things regarding Palin.

This should have been game over last week. I guess we’ll see if the media has figured that out, or if they’re still going to bitterly cling to their Troopergate.

12/9/07: Monegan holds a press conference with Hollis French to push his own budget plan.

Monegan and French? What a coincidence!

The current “investigation” in Alaska absolutely reeks. And with French promising an “October” surprise it’s even worse.

drjohn on September 16, 2008 at 8:36 AM

This is such a non-story that it’s funny that they keep talking about it. Even if she had fired the guy cause he didn’t fire the trooper it wouldn’t have been a scandal.

If they are hoping to use this as their October surprise then they’ll be disappointed.

I was waiting for this to come out. I don’t expect the media or the dems to let go though. In their tenacious tendency to latch onto something, they resemble a pitt bull. The only thing they have in common with Palin.

right2bright on September 16, 2008 at 8:48 AM

It’s good Palin released this now, but they need to keep reminding the public of it for the next six weeks. If not, the big media outlets will allow Mongam’s action to go down the memory hole, including his collaboration with French, who plans to release his ethics report on the Friday before the general election.

Allow people to forget about this, and French’s report will be treated in the same fashion the media treated the release of Bush’s DWI arrest in Maine on the Friday prior to the 2000 election (In that case, it was new information to the public released by a Democratic operative that almost did cost Bush the election. Here, French’s report would only be treated as if it were shocking new information, with no effort to report the other side of the story).

They’ll change their story and move on to something different… see….

The last straw, the McCain campaign said, was in July, when Monegan planned to travel to Washington to seek federal money for a plan to assign troopers, judges and prosecutors who could exclusively handle sexual assault cases — one of the state’s most intractable crime problems.

And Palin KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ONCE ELECTED. Other politicians only know how to promise their way into office only to fail delivery of anything but misery. But Palin knows how to effect positive CHANGE once in office. She has already.

Perhaps it is Palin’s non-compliance with arcane drivel that lubricates EFFECTIVE CHANGE CUTTING PORK.

I sense a pattern. They let the left and the media carry on about something, then they release “the real story” and voila…a positive quality about Palin is proved again. In this case, it demonstrates her standing up to the “old boy network”, who clearly didn’t take her role as “the boss” seriously.

It’s about the way the information/truth is released by the McCain campaign. Timing could not be more important.

Indeed she does – and anyone living that far out of the reach of direct sunlight would be wise to avail themselves of small doses at the tanning parlor. The human body cannot manufacture Vitamin D without the UV radiation in sunlight. I supect she doesn’t drink a lot of milk (usually fortified with vitamin d) and unless she eats a ton of salmon or drinks cod liver oil like water, this is best way for an office-bound governor to soak up UV light.

It is clear that Monagan was using the threat of accusing the Governor of firing him ove a personal matter as a lever. The Governor was put in an awkward position because her Brother-in-Law happened to be a jerk.

The only person manipulating this situation was Monagan. Palin, in fact, told her staff to lay off the matter, because there was nothing they could do. Clearly she was sacrificing her family interest in order to preserve her ability to govern effectively.

With Trooper-jerk, Palin faced not only an incompetent, but an evil proponent of civil destruction both of property but moreover of LIFE AND LIBERTY. Trooper-jerk not only injured a boy out of cruelty, but threatened the lives and well being both of private citizens and the public at large. Palin proved her Executive diligence in office regarding Trooper-jerk.

Cut out illegitimate expenses: BAIL-OUTS.

Neither enable nor tolerate shifting of responsibilities.

Given Palin’s record, we can at least HOPE that she can effect the same CHANGE in Washington, D.C. And given McCain’s record against ear-marks, we might hope for transparent legislation and budget.

On the GOP ticket we have a Senator of outstanding international repute unparalleled in arcane prowess alongside an energetic Governor of outstanding local repute unparalleled in popularity. They both see things that work, and things needing repair.

So long as the team works to strengthen Rule Of Law, they have my support. “Reform” however is a dangerous label that covers much evil. I rejected it as a front for comprehensive immigration reform when it first appeared in McCain’s motto, and still do not embrace the implications that accompany reform packages that function as Trojan Horses.

I guess this also shoots down the theory she was not properly vetted as well.

To quote Rush, “McBrilliant!” This whole issue was a rabbit hole in the beginning. It ran across the internet waves back in July when her name was prominent in the VP race. I read about it then and thought there was nothing to this, and I wondered then if the Obama people would go nuts over this if she was selected. They have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in Alaska just to find out she has a tanning bed, a family, people who like her, good ethics, traditional values and ideologies and believes in horror of all horrors; GOD!

Woo-hoo…this is delicious. I love the way they waited to release this. Wish they could have held out a little longer, but still nice.

It’s called working a STRATEGY, and timing is critical. The Dems claimed they wanted to make this an October surprise, but their plan appears to have been to make it appear that the McCain/Palin camp was refusing to comply. They wanted that grain of doubt in the voters minds. And McCain/Palin knew all along there was nothing there.

connertown on September 16, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Troopergate is a case of the liberals once again not understanding the American Public. Ever since the Clinton impeachment, they have blamed this right-wing noise machine for most of their losses. They honestly believe that the GOP has a bunch of writers locked in a dark room typing out lies to be used in the next election.

This became even more obvious after 2004, where Kerry ran into the “Swiftboat Veterans for Truth” who managed to severely wound his gravitas by pointing out that he had exaggerated his heroism in ‘Nam. To this day, some liberals claim that it was an unfair and deceitful attack, which is why negative attacks like this are often now called “swiftboating” by the media.

Of course, Dan Rather tried to swiftboat GWB with the TANG memo, but once again the lying nutroots managed to create a cacophony of confusion that caused the media to repudate the “fake but accurate” reporting of the old liberal warhorse. When the attack failed to push keery over Bush in 2004, liberals became ever more convinced that they needed an October surprise to win.

And in 2006, they got one when Foley was discovered to have stupidly been involved in trying to seduce young males via IM. (what was he thinking?) And the GOP lost a few more seats than originally expected in the election. The Kos Kiddies and DU are completely convinced that this revelation was the source of their victory. For all their bluster about Bush, in the end, they believe that without that one October Surprise they wouldn’t have done as well.

So 2008 is upon us, and once again, they see the perfect opportunity to try for an October surprise. But I think they aren’t paying much attention to the electorate. Foley brought down the GOP some, but not because of a partisan hit job. Many GOP voters were already incensed with the GOP’s spend like drunken sailors routine, and would have voted against the GOP anyways, thinking that they can reverse their votes in 2008 once Bush is out of office. (bad idea, as independents vote for the uncumbent a lot, but understandable)

However, Troopergate will look exactly like what its meant to be, an extremely petty and partisan attack with no real substance. And with many independent voters not happy about the negativity in elections. and Troopergate going to have 50 days worth of discussion before this “report” is produced in October. It will backfire badly.

I think they released this NOW, for two primary reasons: the upcoming interview with Couric, and the attempts by Alaska Democrats to subpoena Todd Palin, her husband. The first would allow Couric new interview material. The second is paramount. The Dems want to remove Todd from Sarah’s side (remove general human support, remove him as a union campaign bonus, allow dirty sexual rumors), and they want to put him in a perjury trap.

The guy has ALWAYS been a a-hole, even when he ran the Anchorage PD.

He actually has, I have seen him. He didn’t describe what happened. I am shooting for nice, everyone thinking it would be better for the gentlemen’s future employment if the whole world didn’t know he is an ass. OR let the media get all wrapped up in the story only to look like the fools that they are.

About Walt Monegan and Village Saftey officers.. which he ignored!
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?s=7744890

And as of right now, the Walt Monegan saying that Sarah Palin fired him over “tasergate” is not found via KTUU. I think they deleted it or took it off for eveidence.

But if you are curious. Go to the KTUU website and type Monegan in the search feature. You will get all kinds of stuff!

The same Hollis French who’s behind Troopergate was working with Monegan behind the governor’s back? Color me shocked, shocked I tell you!

So she fired him and even covered his butt afterward. That shows some class.

Turns out he was part of the Alaska Class of Corruption she’s been cleaning out.

Well, that should end that.

HaHaHaHaHa HaHaHaHaHa HaHaHaHaHa HaHaHaHaHa!

Just kidding. Anything goes now.

As far as I know, the trooper in Troopergate is still employed. Does anyone know why? I would think any cop that did these things would have been fired and probably should have served some jail time.

Common Sense on September 16, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Palin got rid of an associate for tazing a little boy and generally being a drunken, insubordinate mess.

Obama got rid of an associate for screaming “God DAMN America!!”

Obama/Biden ‘08?

Jim Treacher on September 16, 2008 at 10:02 AM

And Palin did it in a timely fashion. Obama waited 20 years or so and only made the decision when his ‘associate’ became a major drag on his campaign.

Yet again, Palin proves more ready than Obama.

I love her!

So, Palin is willing to can some as*es when she gets to DC, is that what you’re telling me? GREAT! one more compelling reason to voter for her.
