Obama: Hey, remember when I came up with the plan for that stimulus bill? Democrats: Um, no; Update: McCain video added

posted at 9:58 pm on September 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I remember it. It was his finest hour. Not including the time he got Putin to back down in Georgia, of course.

Via Jake Tapper, breaking the hearts of his old friends at Salon:

“In January, I outlined a plan to help revive our faltering economy,” Obama said, “which formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”

Is that true?

Democrats on Capitol Hill who support Obama say no.

Wanting Obama to win, however, none will say so on the record.

But media accounts from the time make it clear that even though Obama, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., all offered legislation to provide stimulus to the economy, congressional leaders looped them and their legislation out of negotiations…

[T]hough the bill that eventually passed more closely resembled Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s, those involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea [to issue rebate checks] and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having “formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”

He didn’t even show up to vote for it. Not the first time he’s exaggerated his responsibilities in Congress either, as Ace reminds us, and of course he’s not a stickler about carrying out the responsibilities he actually does have.

He sure can give a speech, though, can’t he?

I look forward to the media showing 1/1000th the interest in this case of a candidate with a thin resume lying about his credentials as they’ve shown in Palin touting the fact that she canceled the bridge to nowhere — which she did. Exit question: Does a man who comes from the same professional background as Jesus really need to inflate his resume?

Update: Via InstaGlenn, here’s Maverick laying Obama out.

McCain sez “The Working People”!

He’s got a lot of anti-capitalist vibes going on. It worries me.

Chest_Rockwell on September 16, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Nothing to worry about. McCain supports all working people, even from the one’s who are poor and struggling to the ones that give them jobs.

Obama only supports non-working people that he can “organize” to not work at the steel mills, factories and other places next door to their house because all the jobs are too far away, but instead stay home and collect benefit checks.

It’s the kind of mentality that comes from knowing that the media is in the tank for you and will protect your every word and step.

It’s just scary to know that they are so incapable of telling our point of view. To the MSM, we’re an evil that deserves whatever lengths they have to go to, to beat us. To destroy us.

Don’t know, but I do know that we are told not to engage in “guilt by association” when it comes to Ayers/Wright,Democrats who say hurricanes are a way of showing God is on their side, and Obama
having corrupt people like Johnson part of their campaign who led Fannie Mae/Fannie Mac off the cliff while steering hundreds of thousands of dollars into Obama’s pocket.

McCain needs to tie Obama tight to Fannie and Fredie!!!! He took the money… He didn’t vote on the stimulus package he suposedly came up with…right.

This is great material and should be used fast in a huge ad buy because this is Obama’s only strong point left in the polling. This is the strength that McCain now has the amunition to bring down.

So basically Obama claims he had a good idea to help the American people.

However, he was too busy with his own life to stick around the Senate and get it in a bill. Places to go people to see.

And further, the problems of the American people are so important that a fund raiser or some such thing kept him away from the vote the other canidates had plenty of time for.

Hmmmm. Sounds like the American people are top priority to Barack Obama.

Remember the only applicable experience we are allowed to judge him on his how he runs this campaign….

It is certainly partly desperation, but it is more a sense of entitlement. Obama is used to the press acting as his shield, and I have no doubt here that he expects the press to minimize any criticism of his ridiculous claim.

system(via Instapundit):

The Best Congress Fannie Could Buy
http://www.classicalvalues.com/archives/2008/09/the_best_congre.html

This is a long and complicated story about how Obama backers were behind the mortgage industry meltdown. It hast to start some where, so lets start with a well known Chicago name Penny Pritzker. It starts with a bank failure.

Well, what do ya know. Another ∅bama backer tied to the breakdown of the mortgage industry.
Which brings us to the Fannie Mae Foundation. A sweet little set up for handing out cash to a nice little outfit called ACORN among others. Here are a few of the grants to ACORN.

Why yes. Mr. ∅ was outraged. The very people who helped to rip off the American people were taking millions from the taxpayers while ∅ was helping the thieves get away with trillions. I’m outraged. At the theater. What a great act. And he seems so sincere.

Obama is up to his neck with this mess,I hope McCain bitc$
slaps this poser all the way back to Chicago with this.

You know, it occurs to me that we have all gotten so far off track with the lunacy that is the Obama campaign that we’ve all run right past the simple point.

This is a man, who’s ENTIRE premise in the primaries was that he gave an anti-war speech at an anti-war rally in 2002 while running for a US senate seat.

That’s his big “accomplishment”. Other than that, everything else in his entire career is nothing but fantasy, fluff and window dressing… which 9 out of 10 times is a blatant attempt to cover up for either his complete lack of any credible experience or some completely ridiculous, wrong or questionably legal action he’s taken.

Damiano on September 17, 2008 at 3:01 AM

McCain needs to stay on this theme and release a major advertising blitz, to tie Obama to the Freddie and Fanny debacles. He needs to name names and make it clear to everybody, that this crisis is a Democrat crisis.

He needs to tout his efforts to reform Freddie and Fanny, and detail the successful Democrat effort to stop him.

And he needs to learn how to deliver a condemnation with a look of righteous indignation on his face, instead of a smile.

gridlock2 on September 17, 2008 at 5:36 AM

gridlock2 on September 17, 2008 at 5:36 AM

That’s true. It was my only criticism of that speech. He would look righteously indignant, then break into the infamous creepy smile on delivery of the zingers.

Oh well. It’s part of the McCain charm. He can’t act. I for one consider that a good thing.

Damiano on September 17, 2008 at 5:59 AM

I hope this whole rein-in-the-greed-and-corruption schtick of McCain’s is just for public consumption. If laws were broken, let the justice system do it’s thing…and stop exempting Democrats from accountability. If the playing field is level, the markets will work with minimal controls. The more government tightens it’s grip, the more oozes out between it’s fingers. I just get so weary of the finger-pointing and posturing by McCain. Let the Democrats do that. It makes them look even sillier (cue John Cleese).

Wow. McCain hit Obama right between the eyes. I wonder if Obama’s camp even realizes how poorly his $28,000 a plate fundraiser plays in Ohio and PA? McCain’s campaign set him in the celecbrity mold now that is the lens through which alot of voters view him. The media and his trip abroad helped cement the perception. Now he plays right into it with this huge fundraiser. His decision to forgo public financing will be looked at in hindsight as a huge tactical blunder. Not only has he hurt his campaign he is starving his party in what should be a good year for them to pick up seats. He has to spend too much time fundraising and he is getting the wrong type of attention for it. It just amazes me, that this party is so politically incompetent.

Theworldisnotenough on September 17, 2008 at 8:21 AM

Obama’s statements should be a national ad. Embarrass the hell out of him.

Pair his stupidity with hanging out with Hollywood elites. The mushy middle eats that up because they stick their fingers in the air anyway. McCain should just hammer Obama’s record and highlight how many reforms he asked for that were shot down by Democrats and liberals.

He’s got a lot of anti-capitalist vibes going on. It worries me.

McCain has been talking a lot about lowering corporate taxes. He needs to make the connection that most working people work for corporations, and helping HONEST corporations helps working people keep their jobs. And if greedy bankers make stupid decisions that lead to bankruptcy, how many tellers lose THEIR jobs?

Steve Z on September 17, 2008 at 10:38 AM

That video got a ton of play last night, even on CNN and MSDNC. David Gregory was forced to admit that maybe the Obama camp picked a really bad night to go hobnobbing with Hollywood while the cable channels were filled with pictures of Lehman Bros. workers taking the boxes of stuff out of the building. Obama had nothing to say yesterday of importance because he is out of cash and has to raise it in big chunks now from very rich people.

it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea [to issue rebate checks]

Oh, goody, the anti-stimulus part of the stimulus package.

Cutting marginal tax rates will stimulate the economy. Soaking up venture capital to give people free money will not.

Someone remind me, congress cut checks like these back at the beginning of Bush presidency–but the economy didn’t improve until the tax rate cuts in 2003(?). Did I get that wrong at all?

Count to 10 on September 17, 2008 at 11:35 AM

McCain has been talking a lot about lowering corporate taxes.

Corporate taxes are a flat tax, discouraging lower income families from investing.

I would suggest lumping all investments into some kind of “investment account,” killing all corporate, dividend, and capital gains taxes, and just taxing money removed from the investment account as normal income.

Count to 10 on September 17, 2008 at 11:40 AM

I think you might even be able to make a case that the extra borrowing necessary to cut those rebate checks could have contributed to the instability of the financial markets.

Count to 10 on September 17, 2008 at 11:48 AM

For those bothered by the populist language…

Remember that the core of the problem isn’t proper capitalists doing their thing, it’s the way some of the largest companies end up owning congressmen and senators, and through them the whole regulatory apparatus that should be overseeing them.

If you think McCain doesn’t understand this — or doesn’t think that money paid to politicians is what’s broken in Washington — you haven’t been paying attention.

It’s possible that the system is too broken to fix — but if it can be fixed, McCain’s the right guy to try.

Senator Obama doesn’t even see the problem — he apparently thinks that the problem is that the regulators didn’t have enough power.

ClintACK on September 17, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Thank God we have more media outlets than 20 years ago.
People with brains know what Obama is about. McCain may stick in my craw at times, but at least he’s more or less honest about what he believes. You pretty much know where he stands.
Those who were taken in by Bill Clinton are now taken in by Obama. The same sheeple with lots of time & no jobs (evidently) on their hands bcs they always seem to have time to go protest somewhere. I’ve never had time to go protest about anything bcs I’m busy WORKING & making $$ to pay my bills.

Badger40 on September 17, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Does it strike anyone else as odd that McCain litters his speaches with hard hitting statements, then smiles abruptly with a pause, then goes back to reading his speach. The smile seems at odds with the content. By all means, smile after saying you’ll fight for the working people, but after calling Obama out, it would seem a stern look would be more appropriate. Note, this does not matter to me, but I’d like to see him have better stage presence, for the win.

Barack Obama, not out of commissions
By Francis Beckwith (Email) @ 6:50 pm
Today, Senator Obama said: “Senator McCain offered up the oldest Washington stunt in the book: you pass the buck to a commission to study the problem. But here’s the thing: this isn’t 9-11. We know how we got into this mess. What we need now is leadership that gets us out.”
Apparently, then, we can dismiss Senator Obama’s call for commissions on Social Security (11/2007), torture (9/2007), war crimes (8/2008), and financial oversight for Wall Street (4/2008) as four separate instances of the senator pulling “the oldest Washington stunt in the book.” Perhaps the person who ghost writes his teleprompter can first do a Google search on the senator’s behalf to see whether he had opined on prior occasions on the matter of commissions. It took me about 40 minutes to track all these down.

Obama and his Rezko ties

For more than five weeks during the brutal winter of 1997, tenants shivered without heat in a government-subsidized apartment building on Chicago’s South Side.

It was just four years after the landlords — Antoin “Tony” Rezko and his partner Daniel Mahru — had rehabbed the 31-unit building in Englewood with a loan from Chicago taxpayers.

It was just four years after the landlords — Antoin “Tony” Rezko and his partner Daniel Mahru — had rehabbed the 31-unit building in Englewood with a loan from Chicago taxpayers.

Rezko and Mahru couldn’t find money to get the heat back on.

But their company, Rezmar Corp., did come up with $1,000 to give to the political campaign fund of Barack Obama, the newly elected state senator whose district included the unheated building.

Obama has been friends with Rezko for 17 years. Rezko has been a political patron to Obama and many others, helping to raise millions of dollars for them through his own contributions and by hosting fund-raisers in his home.
