Have Teleprompter, will travel

Barack Obama gets a rare tweak from CNN on his inability to perform off-script.  While appearing at a campaign rally in Pueblo, Colorado, Obama made a joint appearance, not with Joe Biden or Senate candidate Mark Udall, but with a more critical member of his campaign — his Teleprompter:

The Democratic presidential nominee has never tried to hide the fact he delivers speeches off the device, though normally he doesn’t use one at standard campaign rallies and town hall events.

But the Illinois senator used a teleprompter at both his Colorado events Monday — making for a particularly peculiar scene in Pueblo, where the prompter was set up in the middle of what is normally a rodeo ring.

Normally, speakers use Teleprompters for larger events and use notes for smaller stops on the campaign trail.  There’s nothing wrong with using a Teleprompter — it’s a great tool (when it works) and allows the speakers to maintain eye contact with the audience.  It also allows the candidate more freedom to move on stage and frees them from the podium, allowing a more natural delivery.

But for a campaign that laughably dismissed Palin two weeks ago for using a speechwriter, this seems rather revealing.  Palin uses speechwriters, and Obama can’t be separated from his Teleprompter.  Maybe they can avoid the whole problem with a Milli Vanilli/Ashlee Simpson approach and have Obama lip-synch the speeches instead.

Did anyone watch the interview of Palin’s husband by Greta VanSustern? In interviews both the Gov. and her husband are far better impromptu speakers than the Zero (forget about Babbling Biden). The Palins speak in a direct, concise manner – none of those tedious uuuuhhhhhh…… aaaahhh…. uhhh… you know… like, uh……look….ahh… uhhh…

They look the interviewer in the eye and smile.

Barry needs some lessons in communication from the Palins.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 16, 2008 at 12:33 PM

though normally he doesn’t use one at standard campaign rallies and town hall events.

Not exactly true, according to the American Spectator:

According to several Democrat political consultants presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama spent part of his Hawaiian vacation working on weaning himself from a heavy dependence on teleprompters. Even in what are staged as “town hall” events for Obama, remarks are scripted or formatted into bullet points that scroll on teleprompter screens. Obama has had several embarrassing events where the teleprompter either malfunctioned or the screens were not fully visible…

Frankly, I am much more interested today in nailing Obama for jetting off to Hollywood for another fundraiser with clueless rich liberals while 20,000 people have just lost their jobs at Lehman Bros. This man dares to say that John McCain is out of touch with ordinary Americans? How many town halls has he done with ordinary Americans? McCain has done, what, over 200 of them now? Obama thnks it is more important to speak to 200,000 Germans and hobnob with Hollywood celebrities. And he can’t even do that without a freaking teleprompter.

What a bozo.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 16, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Oh God… Obama is trying to paint himself a reformer right now on TV.

Enoxo on September 16, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Obama’s greatest weapon/gift is his voice. Seriously, he’s got the authority voice that could crack stone if he had one of those guns from Dune. It’s powerful. When he lashes that talent to a great speech via a teleprompter, he’s aces. When he uses it to mumble and convey what’s really in his head (above my pay-grade, thinly-veiled socialism, etc), the voice can’t save him.

John on September 16, 2008 at 12:43 PM

The use of the teleprompter by Obama goes beyond reading the speech of the day.

He uses it in Q&A sessions.

When someone in the audience asks Obama a question then off-stage an Obama computer operative/technician is posting the answer/talking points on the teleprompter for Obama to use.
Obama cannot walk and talk and think at the same time. He freezes up.
Look for a potential Obama disaster at the debates.

albill on September 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Good point. From Drudge:

Obama is set to break a single-day fundraising record of $9 million.
$28,500 per person for dinner at the Greystone Estate, hundreds of high rollers, including some of the biggest executives in film, television and music, will munch gourmet chow and hang out with the candidate; at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel 500 others are set to attend just the musical affair with Streisand singing, at $2,500 per ticket.
“People are really scared that McCain is gaining,” said a Hollywood politico involved with Tuesday’s fundraiser. “In my 20 years here, I have never seen folks write checks like this.”

Yesterday, Obama declared how we are in “the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression.”
“The fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are still very, very difficult times,” rival McCain said, sunny-side up.
“Sen. McCain, what economy are you talking about?” smiled Obama.

And why isn’t anyone talking about the total devastation from Ike in Texas? 2.2 million without power. Oh, nevermind.

I just caught Obama stumping in Golden, CO, before I read this post. I thought I detected even more obvious use of the teleprompter than he usually betrays. He was “reading” more than usual…about something like “regulating Wall Street and how McCain will make economy worse by cutting taxes on these kinds of businesses and all the big, bad rich people..” something like that, right?

Whatever he was trying to say, he was stumbling more than usual.

1. without skill or aptitude for a particular task or assignment; maladroit: He is inept at impromptu speaking tasks.
