New Obama ad: Hey, McCain’s a liar

See Kaus for why this is “a total loser strategy,” paying particular attention to 5(b). If, after a week of saturation coverage of Lipstickgate, you want to whine about the other guy’s nastiness, it would behoove you to offer concrete examples at least (McCain’s sex-ed ad, etc.). As it is, this plays less like a rebuttal of an attack ad than an attack ad itself, offering one vague media tsk-tsk pullquote after another. Note to Obama: The public knows they’re in the tank. Reminding them that the press disapproves of McCain’s tactics is about as dazzling as telling them that Howard Dean disapproves, too. In fact, it’s even lamer than it appears. Ben Smith notes that “Benen” of “CBS News” listed here is actually nutroots blogger Steve Benen, formerly of the Carpetbagger Report and now of the lefty rag Washington Monthly. His only connection to CBS appears to be that the site publishes his posts occasionally in its opinion section — as it does for a bunch of other opinion journals, including NRO. Even Team Barry can’t be bothered distinguishing the media from its cheering section anymore.
Ironically, it was the media’s Obama obsession that nudged McCain down this road, beginning with the mockery of the Britney ad. Spokesman Brian Rogers:
Rogers, who hung tough with McCain through the dark days of the primary and has lived through every high and low of this turbulent and unpredictable race, argues that they tried to run a high-ground campaign and sought to keep the candidate in front of the media in the fashion he enjoys. His point: No one paid any attention.
“We ran a different kind of campaign and nobody cared about us. They didn’t cover John McCain. So now you’ve got to be forward-leaning in everything,” he said…
“When he’s sitting in back of a bus and getting questions about Viagra, I think we understand at that point you’ve got to make some tactical adjustments,” he said, recalling a particularly awkward gotcha-of-the-day moment on McCain’s bus in early July.
Exit question: What’s the smart move for The One now? Start fight fight fighting back with ever more egregious distortions of his own, per the counsel of the fightin’ nutroots, or simply ignore Maverick from now on and talk all economy, all the time? The worst thing about this ad is that it keeps the national spotlight on McCain (and of course Palin), which isn’t a position the world’s biggest celebrity can long afford.

Haha, I saw the ad on one of the morning shows and thought the exact same thing about the public knowing that the media’s in the tank for Obama. Especially when you start pulling quotes from The New Republic.

So much for the “progressive and positive” campaign.
I point back to Obama’s own quotes on Letterman… 4 days ago…
“This [negative campaigning] diverts from the issues and ultimately just hurts the American people.”

Wow, that one is very high on the unintentional comedy scale. Like people are going to be shocked that the Washington Post doesn’t like John McCain!
If TV stations show that ad while McCain runs the “crisis” ad, Obama is going to look unbelievably stupid.

Ah yes, quotes form those bastions of credibility and fairness, The Washington Post, the New Republic, etc., etc., etc. Obama is desperate and it dragging out his entire left wing propaganda machine to preach the party line. That ad is pure BS and a lie within itself. The only audiences that ad will effect are his cult supporters and other far left goons.
rplat on September 15, 2008 at 11:23 AM
This is what Democrats do, they simply accuse without specifics. Democrats don’t do specifics, Obama’s campaign has been nothing but chanting of the same words over and over again… change …. hope. But never any specifics. Democrats lie a lot, specifics never help them, they need everything to remain nebulous and vague otherwise their lies are exposed.
That is why there is nothing specific in this ad, just bare threads accusations, that’s what Democrats do.
Maxx on September 15, 2008 at 11:23 AM
There isn’t a smart move left for Obama. He doesn’t have any friends to do any testimonial ads for him, which is always the best strategy to counter attack ads. Joe Biden continues to make an ass of himself so Obama can’t use him as a credible attack dog while he takes the high road. His surrogates were embarrassing on the Sunday shows, especially Claire McCaskill.
Democrats know the polls are understating the gigantic swing toward McCain all over the country. He’s the right man for the times, Obama isn’t, America has already decided, and there is nothing they can do about it.
rockmom on September 15, 2008 at 11:24 AM
What’s the smart move for The One now?
The Weekly Standard posted an article that offered plenty of good advice for BO. Some Republicans have offered sound advice in the last weeks. They will never take it though.
The Obama campaign under the direction of a sleazebag like Axelrod will mirror the nutroots, screaming, hurling vicious insults always trying to kick the groin instead of landing a fair punch.
They fight like sissies because that’s what they are.

I regularly skim the usual lefty sites and the “LIES! LIAR! LYING McLIARBAG!!” theme has become the No. 1 effort of the nutroots in the last couple weeks.
Obama has taken his lead from the likes of DailyKos on this one. But the L word seems to have lost a lot of its impact, what with the years and years of BUSH LIED PEOPLE DIED unhinged-rant dilution.
This ad makes Obama look whiny, running to his media Mommies for the defense he can’t muster on his own.
Overall message: BARACK OBAMA = WEAK.
Gilda on September 15, 2008 at 11:28 AM
The left’s strategy has been to lurch further left. I suggest that Obama come clean and show how right wing Code Pink is compared to him. It can’t hurt.

The Obama camp has managed to do less with more than any campaign made by any candidate in my (at least partially) cognizant lifetime.
That can’t be helping him or hurting J-Mac.
With their pals in the press, they could be having a field day concerning the economy right now- but wouldn’t that open other boxes they’d rather keep stowed regarding mainsprings for all this garbage? Maybe there’s a message or point there waiting under the surface of the water that they’d rather keep the public blissfully unaware of- all the while encouraging us all to just “jump right in”.
ChipDWood on September 15, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Notice how this ad pulls quotes from the most liberal sources the MSM has to offer right now?
So where is the big surprise in all of this?
This ad might as well throw in some sound bites from some of Olbermann’s most recent rants on MSNBC, and even toss in a couple looned-out quotes from the “best” moonbats HuffPo and D-Kos have to offer right now.
And how about throwing in some quality quotes from Rosie O’Donnell’s and Barbara Streisand’s blogs for good measure?
I mean, if B.O. is going to throw crapola like this out on the airwaves, why not have him pull out all the stops, so we can all see just how desperate he is getting hour by hour, minute by minute?
pilamaye on September 15, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Why would you pay your campaign dollars for the work the media is already doing on your behalf? Obama paying double for the same information is really a brilliant campaign tactic … by the McCain campaign.

So what precisely is Obama accusing McCain of lying about?
Charges of lying don’t stick unless someone can prove with FACTS that someone deliberately said something false.
Of course, if Obama wants to go down this road, there are innumerable “Obama before/Obama after” comparisons that can be made into 30-second ads, showing Obama on both sides of an issue. Then ask the voter at the end of the ad, “On which date was Obama lying?”

The financial crisis helps no one. But like terrorism, it causes the voters to want a steady hand, even if all the answers aren’t immediately available. Obama not only knows nothing about the workings of the US economy, he is a metrosexual type guy. Nobody is reassured by his strength. Advantage McCain.
JiangxiDad on September 15, 2008 at 11:48 AM
Obama is taking a big chance here in going off message of ‘hope and change’ and new politics that got people flocking to him. Let’s face it, Obama going negative can really backfire on him personally. As he was quoting saying of his white grandmother, she was afraid of those angry looking black men. If he gets too angry, white voters will flock to McCain in droves. I am not trying to be racist here only figuring some peoples prejudices.
