Carly Fiorina: SNL’s skit was sexist

posted at 7:07 pm on September 15, 2008 by Allahpundit

Looks like we’re holding the victimization pageant over for a second exciting week.

A top aide to John McCain said Monday she thought comedian Tina Fey’s impersonation of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin on NBC’s Saturday Night Live over the weekend was sexist because it portrayed the Alaska governor as lacking in substance…

“The portrait was very dismissive of the substance of Sarah Palin, and so in that sense, they were defining Hillary Clinton as very substantive, and Sarah Palin as totally superficial,” Fiorina told MSNBC earlier Monday. “I think that continues the line of argument that is disrespectful in the extreme, and yes, I would say, sexist in the sense that just because Sarah Palin has different views than Hillary Clinton does not mean that she lacks substance.”

Please. This is the same show that used a kid to play Dan Quayle. If a joke about the two of them being lightweights magically becomes sexist because she’s a woman, then the perennial GOP argument that Democrats are elitist must magically become racist as applied to Obama since now it can be misinterpreted as code for “uppity.” The writers aren’t calling her a bucket of fluff because she’s a woman or even because she’s a Republican (McCain isn’t portrayed that way on the show); they’re calling her that because she seemed to the left — and to some conservatives — as ill informed in the Gibson interview. Which brings us to our exit question, via Patterico fave Jan Crawford Greenburg: Is Team Maverick guilty of reverse sexism, i.e. demanding a lower standard for Palin than they’d demand for a male politician? Between Fiorina’s lame bit of demagoguery and McCain himself insisting that Obama’s lipstick comment was “the wrong thing to say” without being able to say why, they’re certainly doing nothing lately to ease Heather MacDonald’s worries.

Guh. Even Palin said the skit was funny.

Get control of the damn message, Maverick. This isn’t helping at all.

embittered redleg on September 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM

Palin would have been a brilliant pick if it didn’t have to come with Team McCain…

ninjapirate on September 15, 2008 at 7:13 PM

Yeah, I’m not buying the sexism meme on this one. It’s comedy, and Fey did as good of a job as anything.

Sakaki on September 15, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I would say, sexist in the sense

Stop. Please. Stop.

Spirit of 1776 on September 15, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Carly Fiorina still thinks that sexism was why she got fired by HP. Her nearly bankrupting the company had nothing to do with it.

Indeed, I will argue that sexism (as in seeking a female CEO) is what got her the job to begin with. After all, her career achievement prior to HP hiring her was bankrupting Lucent…

wildcat84 on September 15, 2008 at 7:14 PM

No more victim politics, please. The skit was funny, even if not in a nice way.

BadgerHawk on September 15, 2008 at 7:14 PM

I thought the skit was the funniest thing. Further more it made SP look all cute and friendly and HRC look pretty bitter. I am woman for the record. I have watched it several times and it cracks me up every single time. Sometimes you just need to have a good laugh.

BTW, because of SP I have repented of my position on not voting this fall and will vote for JM/SP

I look forward to more Tina Fey. She was really funny!

USBB on September 15, 2008 at 7:15 PM

I agree. It was a joke. Democrats can’t take jokes. We can. That’s one thing I respect about Bush.

Disturb the Universe on September 15, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Is Team Maverick guilty of reverse sexism, i.e. demanding a lower standard for Palin than they’d demand for a male politician?

So, what standard would it make for Obama as a black candidate for presidency? Would it be the reverse racism and affirmative action that demands lower standard from a minority, male politician?

Kokonut on September 15, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Good grief, get the stick out. Loosen up. Laugh it’s good for you. The McCain Camp needs to knock this stuff off.

Cindy Munford on September 15, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Just let things go. If there is another week of making Palin an airhead then there should be a justified argument.

jencab on September 15, 2008 at 7:16 PM

They are still harping about not knowing…yet we knew her 4 months ago. Many of us had “vetted” her months ago.
And they never broach the subject about Trig being he daughters, Palin be called a pedophile, Todd having an affair, any one thing like Gibson, big deal, but as a total package, almost unimaginable, except we actually read it and saw it unfold.

right2bright on September 15, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Yeah, I thought the skit was funny, too. Wondering what the PUMA gang thought about the skit.

Kokonut on September 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM

There is a danger to reacting so sharply to every media hit on Palin. The audience understands the double standard assigned to the Governor.
It is that understanding that endears her to us, we love downtrodden underdogs. The McCain campaign needs to relax a bit and let the media deliver her to us.

FireBlogger on September 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM

I though Tina Fey had the accent and the look perfect. Of course both Amy and Tina loathe Sarah as a provincial rube that is massively unworthy because of her conservative views.

They prefer the Hillary feminist model that had to marry into power.

DeweyWins on September 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM

Actually, I didn’t think the skit was sexist. Although, the skit does have whiff of anti-religious bigotry, I think.

terryannonline on September 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM

This was mindless levity, nothing more and nothing less . . . about on the same level as “Morning Joe”and his guests.

rplat on September 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Am I sexist for thinking she’s sexist for thinking the skit was sexist? Or something like that…nevermind.

unseen on September 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Oh, maybe make a suggestion to SNL that the skit should be between Obama and Palin since liberals are so intent on comparing Obama’s great experiences to that of Palin (allow me to laugh here for a moment)?

Kokonut on September 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

It’s not sexist. It was funny. Quit whining, Americans don’t like whiners. Let The Obamassiah whine.

Cankles for Hillary, anyone?

Kokonut on September 15, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Gawd – shut up with the sexism meme, already.

please stop pulling the sexism card. it could backfire. fiorina has got to go.

venicesurfer on September 15, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Awww c’mon it was funny. When McCain/Palin win, it will be fun to see Sarah Palin doing weekend update dressed as Tina Fey.

Candy Slice on September 15, 2008 at 7:21 PM

The problem with the skit was that Hillary didn’t want it bad enough.

My collie says:

Er..CC, YOU tell Hillary that, okay?

BadgerHawk on September 15, 2008 at 7:22 PM

Yeah, it did portray Palin as empty headed…that’s what satire does, boys and girls, pokes fun at stereotypes.

I don’t think the Hilary character was much satire, though. Poor thing, she probably thinks essentially that.

I wouldn’t want to promulgate a stereotype, though.

:)

Bob's Kid on September 15, 2008 at 7:23 PM

Check the SNL credits. Did a male writer pen this skit?

saved on September 15, 2008 at 7:23 PM

Lighten up and stop pretending to be the victim. Palin even said she thought it was funny. She also said this Halloween, she’s going as Tina Fey.

AubieJon on September 15, 2008 at 7:24 PM

I watched the skit, dreading what they had in store. Instead I found myself laughing, even at the stuff directed at Sarah. To have both sides poked fun of like that is perfectly acceptable. Certainly we could have had far worse. And like everyone says – Tina Fey had Palin’s accent and mannerisms down pat.

I think it would be interesting to have Palin on doing a Tina Fey skit.

zmrzlina on September 15, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Is Team Maverick guilty of reverse sexism, i.e. demanding a lower standard for Palin than they’d demand for a male politician?

Huh? Don’t we have bigger fish to fry? Good grief.

labwriter on September 15, 2008 at 7:25 PM

Get a grip. It was a joke. SNL does it to nearly all politicians worth making skit about. Stop whining, the Dem’s have that covered already, and look how well it’s worked for them…. catch a clue already willya?

Hog Wild on September 15, 2008 at 7:26 PM

Good grief! That’s exactly what America needs: Carly Fiorina as Humor Czar, deciding what’s funny and what’s not for the rest of us. And really, since when did America take seriously the fascist notion that the media most conform to a politically correct template?

Tantor on September 15, 2008 at 7:27 PM

It was clear that NBC exercised the full extent of their “equal opportunity trashing of candidates” policy. No harm, no foul.

rplat on September 15, 2008 at 7:28 PM

I though Palin handled it well. said it was funny and that she had dressed up as Fey for Halloween. Ouch. that had to hurt. comparing Fey to a monster? or maybe a ugly witch? Go put down by Palin. should have left it there. the skit was sexist. Wether you all want to see it or not. It protrayed Palin as an empty headed women that got to the position on her looks and hillary failed to get the position because she didn’t have the “look”. I find it offensive to say that women get to positions on their looks. Palin earned the slot. From her work in ALsaka, her high approval ratings, her positions on the issues of reform, energy, tax cuts, balance budgets and her deep conservative views. Her gender might have played a role in the picking but it was her governing style that of a mavrick that sealed the deal. Her being a darkhorse also helped to feed the McCain message of change and steal it from Obama. Palin brings many things to the ticvket besides the fact that she is a good looking woman. yet SNL only consentrated on that one aspect and platyed her as a dumb “blonde”. The skit while somewhat funny was sexist to its core and failure to see that is not right. The line from obama about Hillary throwing the china was funny too but it also was sexist. You will never get rid of sexism nor racism from the entire conversation but pointing it out should not be called “whinnying”

unseen on September 15, 2008 at 7:29 PM

Shut up, Carly – Palin thought it was funny. Enough said.

sexism? Tina Fey was brilliant, don’t ya know. oofta matta….

jbh45 on September 15, 2008 at 8:47 PM

The McCain campaign should not be whining about this and Palin wouldn’t herself but there is no doubt that SNL tried to portray Palin as a dumbass.

echosyst on September 15, 2008 at 8:48 PM

They portrayed Hilary as a bitter shrew! I like Palins portrayal much better. IT WAS FUNNY!

ctmom on September 15, 2008 at 8:49 PM

You know what bugged me about the skit? It implied that Palin was stupid, but didn’t point out the fact that it was the moron Obama that kicked Hillarys’ ass. Hill has no reason to be bitter towards Palin. Her rage should be directed towards the One. Dems did it to her, not republicans.
It should be an interesting season, though, lets see how they treat Obambi.

redshirt on September 15, 2008 at 8:50 PM

I thought the impersonation of Palin was pretty good, but am curious: Has SNL made a single joke at Obama’s expense? I know they are credited with bringing some awareness to the disparity between the way Hillary and Barack were treated in the media, but have they taken a single shot at Barack?

Dead Hand Control on September 15, 2008 at 8:52 PM

I didn’t hear Carly on MSNBC but I did hear her on Hewitt. She had a point that is larger than just Palin.

Making fun of Palin, say as a hunter or mom of lots of kids, that’s to be expected. But the ‘joke’ they drag out for Palin is the same they do for all non-liberal people that kid

“Conservatives are STUPID”

Reagan is stupid, Palin is stupid, yadda yadda yadda.

Especially conservative or non-left women are especially in the crosshairs of being NOT REAL WOMEN because they are outside the acceptable ideology.

I’m not angry with SNL, I’m just damned bored by the same “why does the chicken cross the road” crap that passes for humor.

Darleen on September 15, 2008 at 8:53 PM

This skit was the funniest thing they’ve done in years.

Tina’s impression was spot on, and the venom flowed both ways.

Of course, the show quickly reverted back to tired repeats of things that weren’t funny last year, then it got worse…until I changed the channel.

But listen, who are we to judge anyway? SNL is a cultural icon that commands one and a half times the viewers of Mad TV – so they must be doing something right.

Dorvillian on September 15, 2008 at 8:55 PM

It was funny, for crying out loud. It’s SNL, not 60 Minutes…

MB4 on September 15, 2008 at 8:56 PM

WOW, did you hear that in the video… six states said they would walk out of the convention if McCain picked Lieberman ….. holy cow!! Is that the amount of pressure that has to be exerted on McCain to get him to listen to his base? It must be. That is sad and very disturbing.

And I thought McCain actually listened to his base for once with a gleeful heart and it turns out they had to twist his arm off in order to make him do the right thing. That does not bode well for the future. Hey Mac… listen to your base. Don’t you see what has happened? You grudgingly did what your base demanded and things are working out great for you. Write that down in your notebook… make it a tattoo on the back of your hand and read it everyday. I’m telling you sir, if you go Maverick up in the White House against your base your administration will fall apart before it gets started. And there will be no one to support you.

LISTEN TO YOUR BASE SENATOR MCCAIN

Governor Sarah Palin said she liked,I liked,

I don’t see anymore sexism in SNL than anywhere else. It was a great skit… but if they continue to diminish Palin’s intelligence… I don’t think it will remain funny.

Gots to echo (and the Bunnymen) what all yall are saying: the sketch was funny and well within the bounds of what is acceptable satire aimed at high ranking public officials.

I thought Gov P’s spokesperson comment about how Palin laughed off the harmless sketch and how she used to dress up as Tina Fey for Halloween was the 110% correct tone to take.

Let Sarah be Sarah. It is SHE who has the emotional connection to the workaday people, not these zillionaire female surrogates. These robo-ladies like Fiorina and Whitman, who made gabillions of dollars in big business but have no earthly idea what’s on the minds of plain average folks(such as myself and most of my friends)really need to shut their pieholes about pop culture issues and stay on message about how Obama is going to crater the middle class with tax cuts, regulation and massive new spending as laid out in his Sermon on The Mount at Mile High.

Sorry about the run-on sentence, but Palin’s greatest strength right now is the way everyday people relate to her in ways that elite doofuses cannot understand or appreciate. Duh!

I bet you a donut the SNL sketch was received in most people’s homes around the country the same way it was viewed at the party I was at: Laughs and smiling nods from a house full of 30/40-something middle-class, working moms and dads.
So, lighten up, McCain Billionaire Ladies. Besides, Amy Poehler stole the sketch anyway.

NO. They are demanding that the opponent be asked the same questions. How is that reverse sexism?

JAM on September 15, 2008 at 9:51 PM

Yup. Time to send that aid packing. The initial onslaught has passed without causing much damage. Half the people with the pitchforks and torches running around AK have given it up as a bad job and the remainder are stuck interviewing the handful of entrenched morons that Palin fired when she was mayor. The media is shooting themselves in the foot with this and people are tuning them out.

Palin’s aid the other day laughed it off, which was the correct response. Who is this moron coming out days later and reversing that?

Get back on message McCain. There are SO MANY places that he can strike irrefutable, crippling blows to Barry and Team McCain’s chosen Lipstick-Gate and Tina-Fey-Gate. Someone go slap some sense into the staffers.

I am a career IT person. I’ve always run a Compaq/HP shop.

In the dark days of Queen Carly, HP’s supply chain was so fucked up they couldn’t get us a server in less than 8 weeks.

All because of a flawed plan she personally implemented.

After she was fired and Mark Hurd took over, this has NEVER happened again. Indeed, I can get a completely custom server config and get it overnight. When Carly ran HP, they sank to 3rd in the industry in sales even after absorbing Compaq which should have made them #1. Today, HP is #1, and rightfully so, they make the best stuff.

Shut up, Carly – Palin thought it was funny. Enough said.

Precisely. I thought it was funny too.

“Carly Fiorina doesn’t speak for me”- Sarah Palin

Fletch54 on September 15, 2008 at 9:26 PM

And why should she? Unlike Carly, Sarah Palin actually has successes of her own management/planning/leadership to show for her career.

Carly only has to show a massive failure at Lucent followed by nearly ruining HP, followed by a job at the UN, followed by being yet another person we wished didn’t work for McCain.

wildcat84 on September 15, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Oh C’Mon Carly!

The thing Americans like about Palin…and YOU Carly, is the fiesty, self made, get-in-the-ring-and-tough-it-out, competitive, strong, smart, and courageous image.

Both of the characters were portrayals of the caricatures in the media.

Go after the “Claire McCaskills” like you did the other day on Stephanopolous’s show. You slayed her!

Avoid SNL.

Saltysam on September 15, 2008 at 9:58 PM

I don’t think it was “sexist.” Obviously, the angle SNL has developed on Palin is one of “sex kitten” — meaning, she’s cutesy, dumb, knows little (dumb again) and immature, according to the SNL comedy stereotype they’ve developed.

That stereotype is not really “funny” (in real life) but it WAS funny to see this done and done this once as a comedic bit. SNL will start soon being flat and not-funny, though, if they keep this stereotype up without refreshing it. For reference, “The Church Lady” routine WAS sustained (and remained very funny) because it was so outrageously not individually directed (no one person called “Church Lady” was being parodied), but in this case, focusing on Palin (real person), the stereotype isn’t sustainable beyond the introductory without it being updated and continued to be made more interesting.

But it’s not “sexist” in my view, it’s just comedy waiting to see if it’s going to pratfall in future episodes. After hearing Chevy Chase hunger for the “destruction” of Palin on air today (seriously, Chase was quite serious, he said he wanted the media to “destroy her”), SNL is walking on thin ice if they don’t make the Palin bit more astute and leave it in Chevy Chase territory (his pratfalls were never funny).

Fiorina overstated the case here.

I hope McCain has a plan. petunia on September 15, 2008 at 9:35 PM

He has…

“I was a POW for five and a half years in Vietnam, before I decided to get even by…

Cheating on my first wife because; I didn’t get “any” in Vietnam…

Took $100K from Mr. Keating because; I didn’t get “any” in Vietnam…

I ran for Congress and the Senate because: I didn’t get “any” in Vietnam…

I’m now running for President; because Dubyah screwed me in Carolina the last time around…

So help me God…I’m not going to get “screwed again”…!

Screw you this time… Barrack…!

Where do failed CEOs go? Why into politics, of course. That is after the shareholders pay them megabuck$ to GO AWAY.

It’s not capitalism people hate; it’s corporatism.

Obama’s ideology includes sexism.

If McCain told Obama to drop it, then Obama’s been served his warning shot before getting it square between the eyes.

Sexism is a legitimate point when one is denied a job because of one’s sex. Sexism has been an ugly point of contention as Democrats attacked Palin because she had a family and was choosing “poor mothering” habits by simultaneously being a professional. Democrats have yet to withdraw that sexism. They prove that in a Democrat world, “America is a downright mean country.” So vote a non-Democrat world and kick Nancy and cruelty into the minority.

The SNL opening was pleasant enough because both Palin and H.Clinton were equally getting pie in the face. Of course the undercurrent intimated that like Clinton, Palin is going down, too, PS: FOR BEING A FEMALE. But you really have to push hard to go that deep, or else your skin’s too thin to find offense. None the less, until Obama gets slapped in the face on SNL, a blow-hard thin-skinned pain in the ass argument can be made that SNL is still being sexist, proving Obama can’t take a punch without going down, belonging to the weaker sex (metro-male misogynist).

IF SNL wants to make history, let them poke fun at Obama’s record before the election. And if the “O” whole-cloth One is too profound for SNL, let them ridicule their own habits for a change. But then, that would take a sense for fair play. And though it would be a huge hit, it’s beyond SNL ability. They’re such weenies, unable to admit their own Chosen falsehoods before defeat. Democrats are cannibals with their fallen candidates. No place worse to be than on the losing Democrat ticket.

Jesus wild_, that’s really harsh and unkind…!

J_Gocht on September 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM

SNL later sketch NOT in the least humorous, a young couple (pregnant girl) were taking social abuse, too dumb to know they would never be served their dinner by a waiter stuck on “pepper” at a skummy cafe. THAT was disgusting AND a boring discrimination against whitey crackers by ubertards.

maverick muse on September 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM

…the problem with trigger-happy staffers stomping at sparks and flapping about as if they were forest fires: we’re talking about Saturday Night Live here, folks.

Saturday Night Live hasn’t been relevant, and certainly hasn’t been funny, since Belushi was doing Joe Cocker during the Ford Administration. Who cares? Why don’t we just resurrect “National Lampoon” so’s we can complain about it?

…and who is Tina Fey, anyway…and why should we care if she “really” doesn’t like Sarah? I seem to remember that she was in a movie, recently released to DVD, called “Baby Mama”, which seemed to have a wafer-thin premise, forgetable performances, and unlikeable characters…and I only saw a 30 second trailer! Once again with gusto, who cares?

Has style become substance? That’s the only world in which Saturday Night Live would be relevant. Otherwise, it’s a snotty, “look-at-me-I’m-hip” has-been which should’ve joined the “My Mother The Car” in some broadcaster’s database over 25 years ago.

Republicans shouldn’t be using words like “sexism”. Let the Democrats wear that word out, along with words like “racism”, “homophobia”, “hate” and “entitled”. Republicans should be using words like “opportunity”, “responsibility”, “initiative”, and “butt-whuppin’”.

ALLAHPUNDIT, you got something against girls? I know there’s been some questions in the past, but i thought only in fun. I know you might have a hard time with all the seat time you put in here, but really.

;)
